Posted: 26 Dec 2020 05:05 AM PST Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread. This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant. The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success. We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed. Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner. Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others. #Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet. You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Dec 2020 03:08 PM PST Hi, my name is Branden, I'm 17 and I want to start a business where I can sell musical instruments and other music related products. However, how do I obtain these instruments in order to sell in my store? One of the products that I would like to sell is electric violins, however I have no idea how I would get the electric violins to sell. I would be highly interested in creating my own, however I have no idea what I would study in college to be able to create electric violins. So my questions are: • How could I learn to create my own electric instruments? • If I were to sell instruments that other people have created, how do I go about buying them? My apologies if these questions are dumb. [link] [comments] |
How can i add more value for my advertisers? Posted: 27 Dec 2020 12:21 AM PST Hello r/startups! I am currently in the process of developing a platform for advertisers. We have 50 active advertisers each week currently. The platform has 1-100 active spots. ALL the spots cost $1 no matter if you get spot 1 or 100. Each week the platform resets and the first one to grab a spot gets it. Think of it like a list; Spot 1 : [Image] 100x300 pixels Spot 2 : [Image] 100x300 pixels * and so on to spot 100 * The problem: I would like to add more value to everyone on the list, no matter if you are in place 1 or 100. Could I add something else that brings value? Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
a highschool student with questions Posted: 26 Dec 2020 05:28 AM PST a highschool student with questions hi! i'm not sure if this is the appropriate sub reddit to post in but i'm a senior interested in becoming a tech-entrepreneur. so i have some app ideas i would love love love to develop but unfortunately, i don't have the coding skills or the fundings to start trying it out / testing / etc i just have a lot of ideas and i'm more business-oriented so things like business plans, marketing plans, etc... i could do it !! i was wondering if there are any resources or any other reddit for young potential entrepreneurs like me!! also wanna participate in pitching competitions and stuffs but they're pretty much nonexistent in my country (myanmar) so i was also wondering if there were any virtual comps that i could take part in. if there was a community to connect with other high school students interested in launching a start-up (like developers and coders) please let me know! +++ if there's any free mentoring sessions regarding entrepreneurship and technology, please do share them to me pls 🥺 [link] [comments] |
Validating market without being able to reach out to potential customers Posted: 26 Dec 2020 02:32 PM PST Hey there r/startups , looking for some ideas on how I can validate my product within the industry without actually reaching out to the potential customers personally. The reason being - My current employer uses an application in the healthcare field where there isn't much competition. I feel like I can make a better app, however, the area is so niche that if I were to reach out to the prospective customers (B2B, healthcare institutions), those customers would most likely go to my boss, who is the CEO, and ask if our company is developing an application and how they can get involved. I have a good job currently and wouldn't want to risk word of my idea getting back to my employer for fear of losing my job. Yes, I have proposed this as something my company could do, but was turned down because "we don't do software development". I'm really at the stage where I need to know if other businesses would buy this product. I have talked to others in the industry over the years, and everyone thinks it's a good idea, but I need something more formal. My goal is to talk to a few organizations to make sure I have a good strategy, and if so have them give me somewhat of a "letter of intent" that basically says "Hey if you make this we're interested" and use that as leverage for investors. So, Here's what I've done so far. I have a website and a linkedin page. I was thinking of throwing some money at linkedin ads (expensive) or Google Ads. I'm completely ok with letting the customer know my identity if they reach out to me/the business first, but I don't want to be going around cold calling others in my industry for reasons listed above. Does anyone have any ideas if there is another way to potentially do this without risking my current job? I'm not big on using a fake name or anything like that. [link] [comments] |
Getting a product in front of the correct per. Posted: 26 Dec 2020 05:23 PM PST I have a product to sell. It's a display - a 'smart' display that will sit/stand outside of stores, be they a large supermarket or small clothing store. For the smaller stores, I could just walk in and ask the owner if they'd be interested in my product. However, for chains such as Tesco (UK supermarket), Walmart (US supermarket), banks, etc. I have no idea who I should contact. I'd love it if you gurus could help me identify who I should speak with and what the process is (i.e. Speak -> agree -> contracts -> purchase order -> delivery? Random guess.). Thanks! Different types of startup reimbursment. Thoughts? Posted: 26 Dec 2020 11:34 AM PST Hey there, I am looking into how to reimburse my founders/engineers. I honestly could not care less about "naming" them (Founder/Engineer/Co-founder), just doesn't matter to me. Anywho, here is what I had in mind. 1) Minimum wage + Stock Options (Capped at a certain limit, payout clause) 2) Straight equity (A little higher than option 1) 3) Revenue Share capped at 2-3 multiplier. A good note to mention, I already paid them for the grunt of the work, I just now need their support for making this go public with constant tweaking and what not. So thoughts? Are there any things I need to make sure to be written down (Yes, I have a lawyer on board) [link] [comments] |
Looking for ways to track and communicate stock Posted: 26 Dec 2020 11:49 AM PST Hello all! I will try my best to keep this post short and to the point. I'm asking for advice on ways to communicate stock/amount of certain items between different departments within a company as well as just having a clear and simple overview of our supplies. Maybe there is an app or website that could be used specifically for this? This holiday season has been the busiest our company has ever had. As this is the first time we've been dealing with such a large number of orders, mistakes were made in our stock count which meant a small percentage of orders did not get assembled in time. This can happen for a number of different reasons. For example, we need to assemble a 100 sets, they each include a battery charger, unfortunately 2 of the chargers we got from our supplier don't work. Because we don't really have any system in place yet, these 2 broken chargers were just put aside, production continued and it wasn't noted into any specific document. Another thing that can happen, a costumer notifies us that their order arrived without a connection cable. The department that deals with returns takes a connection cable from production, again this is not written down anywhere, so now production is missing one cable for a new order. We were very proud and happy to see that the number of such mistakes was quite low but are hoping to minimise, if not completely eliminate them in the future. I really appreciate any suggestions on document sharing apps or other creative ways to handle this. We would like all our employees to have access to such information and also be able to change it anytime and anywhere. [link] [comments] |
Pre-seed / Seed Resources in COVID times Posted: 26 Dec 2020 10:32 AM PST Hello all, happy Boxing Day. My startup is a early stage pre revenue iOS app company. We have completed FFF for a design prototype, branding, user testing etc, and are looking to move to gain seeding for development. High level estimate for development ranges from 2-300,000 depending on features we chose to include for MVP. A few questions with a covid lens (as we are limited to mostly electronic correspondence) 1) does anyone have any favorite sites beyond Angelist etc to gain contact with firms and investors? Has anyone had good success stories getting in touch with investors in a covid world? 2) when we cold contact investors I have heard it is best to be frank and include our pitch deck in the event we only get a quick look 3) what are the best products to include in backup to the pitch deck, i.e our pitch deck is viewed but they may want to see more quickly (website, angelist profile etc) Thanks in advance for the attention and information. Best web host/site builder for a simple landing page? Posted: 26 Dec 2020 07:15 AM PST I have a domain and am looking to build/host a one-page email collection landing page with links to socials. Which service is best to choose for this that works well but doesn't overcharge for just the simple landing page? (I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for squarespace when I don't need any of their fancy features!) [link] [comments] |
What are the best channels to promote the recently launched App for Slack? Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:11 AM PST Hi, everyone. This year we built our first MVP that became #3 Product Hunt and got the first traction. Our product is an Approval Management App for Slack. Now we are looking to onboard more users and to gather more feedback (feature requests). Could you suggest which marketing channels we should try and focus on? Would love to hear your thoughts ✨ [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Dec 2020 05:05 AM PST Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread. A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet. It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals. Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes. The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together. So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant! #Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet. You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord. [link] [comments] |
How to deal with a (seemingly) unmotivated partner Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:08 AM PST I've been working on a software-based startup for a little over a year now. We suffered a lull in our productivity for a couple of months while we were individually occupied with other issues, but things have picked up again exceptionally well recently, especially when classes ended a couple weeks ago - with one exception. We're not a large group, there are only 3 of us right now, but one of us hasn't really gotten back into the swing again. In fact, the little discussions he's engaged in have left me pretty concerned. We've been discussing a content creation plan to target some natural marketing for a long time, but he's been talking a lot more about his "personal brand" and splitting hairs about where his work will go recently. He wants to curate his own related content through personal avenues as opposed to our collective site and brand, or at least split the labor in half. He's been very consistently excited about the work we're doing as a whole, so I don't believe he's losing faith in the project, but it feels like he might be trying to take advantage of the situation. He and I have done a lot of work in tandem, specifically the front-end design, but it's seeming more and more one sided. He's been pushing to take up the creative director sort of role, and I'm comfortable with that, but things aren't exactly working out that way right now given the circumstances. As of right now, we're splitting ownership equally, but he isn't exactly putting in equal work or care. He's not really engaging with our passive group texts or messages, and hasn't really been taking individual time to do much. Even trying to plan an individual conversation is difficult, and I typically have to do it while he multitasks. We're young and busy with other parts of our lives, I understand he can't always commit time and energy 24/7, but I feel like the company is entitled to his contributions. He's been defensive in the past about some of this sort of thing, and he's a good friend mine, so I'm worried about how I should bring up these concerns. He's not exactly irreplaceable, but there aren't any convenient alternatives or anything either. I could pick up his slack, and certainly have, but it isn't fair to anyone if things continue like this. I'm sure he has it in him if he can find the motivation, but it feels like he's just waiting for it to move along and work out - and obviously things don't work that way. I believe in him, I want to be optimistic, and I'm willing to try and help him find the motivation to continue to a certain point. That can't go on forever though, and I don't know how I should address this. I'd love to hear any advice anyone could have about this. I'm sure it isn't an uncommon problem, but it's obviously not simple. What do you recommend? [link] [comments] |
