3 more ideas that could be turned into businesses

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:53 AM PST

Hey everyone! I post regularly about business ideas and opportunities. If you want to see more fleshed out ideas, you can do so here.

Today, I've got 3 solid, albeit not well-researched, ideas that I think you could turn into pretty sweet businesses or side projects. Here's what I've been thinking about -

Syllabus Dates --> Google Calendar: At the start of a semester, students have 3-5 different syllabuses with fixed assignment deadlines that they need to keep track of. As you can imagine, keeping up with this information can be time consuming and tough to manage.

I'd create a chrome extension that integrates the key syllabus dates directly on to the student's preferred calendar application. This could be done with a Chrome Extension that analyzes student's online syllabuses, pulls out the key dates, and adds them to Google Calendar.

Employee LinkedIn Tracking: HR Managers are always struggling to retain talent. Insight into employees' likelihood of leaving is invaluable in industries that have high turnover like finance, tech, and media.

Studies have shown that right before a current employee starts looking for a new job, they'll update their LinkedIn profile. Someone should create a tool that monitors employees' LinkedIn for updates and notifies the HR Manager so they can create a plan to retain the employee.

Note: I fully acknowledge that monitoring employee's social media is questionable; however, today, this is common practice.

DTC for Non-Traditional Pet Products: There's been a number of companies that have created amazing direct to consumer (DTC) brands for dog/cat food, toys, and other products. But, there seems to be a gap in the DTC products for non-traditional pets (birds, fish, snakes, hamsters, etc…).

I think there's a big opportunity to create a well-branded DTC company that sells products targeted at owners of non-traditional pets. I'd start by selling products that could have a subscription model.

Thanks for reading! I'll be hanging in the comments for a while to have a discussion.

Chinese Manufacturer did not double check my design, already shipped goods and now are telling me there’s a design issue

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:31 PM PST

Hey guys, so my supplier just messaged me letting me know that our logo on all the stock we just had shipped to us had been incorrectly designed (they didn't print it correctly.

Aka, they forgot a line under our logo for all of the stock, though it had been agreed that there should have been one under them.

Now obviously this is a big blow to us, but I am not sure how to go about asking for compensation? Or what is the procedures.

Supplier understands issue is their fault and says they will work to compensate us, but I'm afraid they will try to cut us short..

Please help me out on what I should say/do to make sure I receive the most compensation out if it!

    Thanks

Why every generalist is a specialist and why courage beats credentials

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:39 AM PST

I'm an entrepreneur, pretty hardcore reader (50+ books per year) and creator on YouTube. If you prefer text over video, I'll explain my position in text form here as well.

Otherwise here is the video: https://youtu.be/XJsCM7xyETc

    My key talking points:
    Recombination > Specialization
I became an expert in one field by studying many
    Courage > Credentials

The video is based on my own experiences as well as the following books:
Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, David Epstein
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Greg McKeown
    Mastery, Robert Greene
Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell

    Text Summary:

    • The question is highly contextual and everyone should find their own answer through their world view and goals
    • I believe humans are highly multivariate with multiple interests instead of a singular niche attraction which makes us generalists or all-rounders instead of specialists by design. We can't be reduced to a single characteristic or interest.
    • Specialists thrive in more closely bounded environments (extreme examples: chess, playing an instrument)
    • The world is not narrow, but very chaotic instead with incomplete information and delayed feedback on many decisions you need to make
    • The path to become a specialist is through apprenticeships and self-directed focused study. On your way to mastery you make use of the Circle of accelerated returns: Over time practice becomes easier and more interesting, leading to the ability to practice for longer hours → which then makes you more skillful and the circle starts anew.
    • A problem that arises through specialization is that you are more fixed on one career path. If it's not how you envisioned it, you don't have the ability to easily switch. This is important to take into consideration when you are young, because peoples personalities and interests change most drastically between age 18 to age 30.
    • „The most momentous personality changes occur between age eighteen and one's late twenties, so specializing early is a task of predicting match quality for a person who does not yet exist. It could work, but it makes for worse odds. Plus, while personality change slows, it does not stop at any age. Sometimes it can actually happen instantly." - David Epstein
    • David Epstein found that wide range of experiences make you a better learner in general. Generalists are better problem solvers, because they have been exposed to more analogies that they can transfer to problems outside of their previous field.
    • I also find Nassim Talebs viewpoint on the question noteworthy. Who is easily one of the sharpest living minds. I will cover all of his books in a future video. He not only explains that overspecialization often goes hand in hand with the survivership bias, but also states that being a generalist is still possible. Information has not expanded vastly in many areas, but the access to it did, which makes generalism on a higher level possible compared to the past.
    • The T-shape and Pi-Shape models are pretty popular. What I don't like about them is they disregard recombination of existing skills
    • A recent video I created on Bitcoin was something not many people can do the way I did it. Which is the definition of an expert. However it came to life through recombining my non-expert-level skills. Background in Computer Science, studied video editing and graphic design, learned camera presence through being an esports caster on national television and upped the production quality, because I directed and produced a live show in the past.
    • „The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways." - Robert Greene
    • „The fact is, this is even the secret formula to becoming a CEO. All successful CEO's are like this. They are almost never the best product visionaries, or the best salespeople, or the best marketing people, or the best finance people, or even the best managers, but they are top 25% in some set of those skills, and then all of a sudden they're qualified to actually run something important." - Marc Andreessen
    • In the end I think every path is completely fine and justifiable. Just figure out what works for you. What's more enjoyable in the moment and what promises greater rewards in the future. My approach has an entrepreneurial bias
    • Another thought that some of you will disagree with, but I want to voice it anyway is that I think the majority of college degrees make you neither an expert nor an all-rounder. You study in one field only, so you can't be an allrounder and they teach you the same skills as every other student that gets your degree, so how much of an expert are you really? College degrees are not bad per se, but you will need to build something around and on top of them to make them truly valuable.
    • My advice would be to do creative work publicly and get judged by reality instead of a professor. This takes courage, but will be rewarded by society and the market. I always created opportunities and „forced" luck that way.
    • You are good enough at whatever you do to profit off of it. Do it publicly and monetize your learning curve. Courage creates greater rewards than a credential system. Rightly so.

Thank you for reading or watching! I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic. If you want to you can subscribe to my YT-channel or follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/bPGTill

    Job vs Your Own Business

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:14 AM PST

    Hello!

I have been running a small realtor business for the past almost 7 years. I dropped out of college because I couldn't find anything I wanted to study and went and got my realtor license instead.

For the first few years I loved it, but I'm getting very tired of working odd hours, running everything business wise, and just the all responsibilities that come with running your own business.

I have thought a lot about going back and getting a degree and finding a regular job, but my friends are very entrepreneurial and think this is a bad idea. They say it should be everyone's end goal to run their own business and be their own boss, and I got to achieve that right at the beginning of my work career.

I know I would be giving up a lot of freedom not being my own boss, but I'm also really excited about the idea of having set hours and benefits, and not having to bring my work home with me, once I clock out, I'm out.

What are your guys' thoughts on being your own boss vs having a job?

How I got my first paying sponsor for my community (paying me $XXX/month)

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:51 AM PST

    BACKSTORY:

I launched "Local SEO Community" about 4 months ago, and it has grown to 1,050 members.

It's a community for discussing local SEO and Google My Business (GMB) tips and strategies.

    https://i.imgur.com/9WBm3dV.png (screenshot of the community)

For anyone curious, Local SEO is the practice of increasing the search visibility of brick-and-mortar businesses.

For example, a restaurant doesn't need to worry about ranking globally for the search term "food".

Rather, that restaurant just wants to show up at the top of the map search results (AKA Map Pack) when people search "food" in their area.

    -----

How the sponsorship came to be:

The sponsor is a company called GMB Gorilla (it's a public community, so the sponsorship is public). They offer Google My Business management services, so they are a pretty natural fit.

I originally reached out to GMB Gorilla asking if they would like to be added to the "Members-Only Discounts" section on Local SEO Community, where community members can get exclusive deals on local SEO related tools and services.

They agreed to add a discount for community members.

But then after, they asked if there were any other promotional opportunities:

    https://i.imgur.com/OCtP4Fh.png (screenshot of email exchange)

I then explained to them what a sponsor would get (more on that below), and asked what they would be willing to pay for it.

They offered a 3-month deal, at a 3-figure ($XXX) monthly total right off the bat, so I accepted the deal without negotiating. I probably could have gotten $50-$100 more per month if I wanted to play hardball, but I thought it was a pretty fair offer, so I accepted.

    -----

    What the sponsorship gets:

I want to be very careful and intentional about keeping the community health as my main focus, and not ruining the community by putting ads everywhere.

So the sponsor gets featured at the top of the weekly newsletter (highlights the top posts from the community), which gets emailed out to all community members.

They also get a spot in the "Sponsor" section of Local SEO Community

https://i.imgur.com/qghUYCY.png (screenshot of the "Sponsor" section)

I want them to get ROI on their sponsorship, but I also want to make sure it is not too in-your-face.

    -----

    Moving forward

Since the deal, I have been approached by 2 other companies about potentially sponsoring Local SEO Community, which is pretty cool 😎

No dollar amounts have been mentioned, but ideally the sponsorship deals grow as the community grows. I also want to be very intentional about only working with companies that are a good fit as sponsors.

For now, my main focus will be making sure the community stays high quality. Once we get closer to the end of the 3 month deal with GMB Gorilla, I will take a look at the number of members and engagement rates to determine what the next steps might be for potential sponsors.

Planning for your business in 2021

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 04:38 AM PST

Only four Monday's left this year!

Thought I'd kick this one off with something you guys might find valuable. It's helped me with staying motivated and (maybe) contributed a bit to a few successful years as an entrepreneur...

One of the most valuable things I've adopted in the last few years has been a journaling habit. It's not fancy. It's not complicated. I don't always do it, some days I don't get around to it. Almost every day, though, I scribble something down in my (now digital) diary. I use Notion.

Along with a daily habit, I have a reminder set in my calendar for a quarterly review. It's just a quick touch in to see how the last three months have been. One of the steps is to go back through my daily entries and open 10 random days and read them.

Why? It's a reminder of the journey that I've traveled, and more importantly the progress I've made. From my experience, having that journey front-of-mind when planning the future is the best way to prime your thinking for measurable, and therefore sustainable, success.

    Let me explain.

Being forward-focused is an innate trait of human beings. It's one of the primary reasons we've evolved to the top of the food chain. As the pressure to become a better, faster, stronger version of ourselves increases, we place more emphasis on big wins. I want to get there now.

Unicorns, billionaires, IPO's, world records, millions of followers — they're constant reminders of what success looks like. The media is full of overnight successes like Facebook. That causes a bias.

When a new year rolls in, too many people see it as an opportunity for the break-through success they've been waiting for. This is going to be my year. It's also the primary reason most people never follow through on their new year's resolutions and achieve what they want to.

Tackling a big, hairy, audacious goal is hard. Mountains always look intimidating when you're standing at the foot of them. When things are broken down into sizeable chunks with intermediate finish lines, the inertia to start moving is far less. The long game is knowing that the small wins add up. Consistently putting one foot in front of the other is what moves the needle.

Journalling places an emphasis on the long game. By reading through your entries from 2 days, weeks, or months ago, you're reminded of where you've come from. It shifts the focus away from "what can I achieve this year" towards "what can I do today that will pay off in 10 years' time".

Most people overestimate what you can achieve in one year, and grossly underestimate what you can achieve in 5 or 10. The journey to success is made up of small increments of effort over a long period of time.

As the year winds down, and we ponder what the next loop around the sun holds, consider the long game when you're planning the future of your business.

Do you know where you want to be in 5, 10 or 15 years from now? What steps can you take today, that will set that flywheel in motion? What systems do you have in place that keep you motivated to make the decisions every day that will move your business forward.

    IG and FB verifications

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:23 AM PST

Hi! I work in social media and apply for verifications for a lots of people. Any profile both for Facebook and Instagram that is NOT classified as personal (either government officials, businesses and celebrities who have to have a certified agent/manager and/or participated in projects seen or heard by 5000 people) can apply for verifications. There are contacts directly at Facebook for each world region attached to each category of professionals one can contact for verification. They simply have to prove the account is theirs and the assigned FB will provide verification for both Instagram and Facebook accounts. I can assist with verifying your Instagram or Facebook account by taking on your application and charge a little fee for expediting the process. You can pm me if you're interested

How I went from a network engineer to an entire IT department

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST

In April 20, 2020 I decided to use my knowledge as a network engineer to build a little (humm I thought) service for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The service is a business phone system where we provide a phone number for a business and redirect calls to a cell phone number. No internet or app is needed. (https://callsredirect.com )

The challenges I faced while trying to reach my goal pushed me to wear many hats. I went from network engineer to web developer, from cloud engineer to devops engineer. I even had to do marketing and everything else you can imagine (in the context of IT of course).

I didn't have to go expert mode into each field as my goal was just to learn what I needed to build my service. However, I learned so much more than what I anticipated when starting this project.

I still have a long way to go to take my service where I would love it to be, but I already feel like I gained so much just by starting it.

    Some stuffs I learned:

The best documentation is the source code

To go far, go together (yeah I need a team)

The customer doesn't care about nothing but the actual service

college student here, how do you expand client base?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:28 PM PST

Hi, as a college student I need to find ways to make extra money since my parents no longer support me financially. I love computer related stuff so I decided to try offering my services to friends starting from 6 months ago. Basically what I did is just like your average computer shop, I fix PCs and Laptops, upgrades them, build PCs, virus removal, and things like that. The thing is my customers were just my friends and friend of friends in one college within the same age group. I am looking to expand to a broader client base but I don't know how. I tried promoting with instagram ads (I have IG with just 400 followers, most of them are my friends) and putting flyers on street but no luck so far. Sorry for my english, not a native. Any help would be appreciated!

What is the best platform to launch a contest for developers?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:13 PM PST

My company will be releasing an API for print-on-demand products in a couple of months and we want to add apps for Shopify, WooCommerce, etc. It's a high-volume market and we have several unique advantages meaning we should be a popular resource for these sites.

We want to offer developers a % of sales through their apps as compensation, potentially with pay upfront as well. Where is a good place to launch this and reach developers interested in this type of project?

It's ok to take a break from your main project to work on small side projects. You never know.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:55 PM PST

Back in 2009 I launched a simple poll site for Twitter: https://www.twtpoll.com It was somewhat popular at the time. If you remember Twitter's first years, they struggled to keep their servers up (remember the fail whale?), so they wouldn't develop anything themselves.

Actually, fun fact. I built Twtpoll as a little side project as I was tired on working on my main project one night in 2 hours (very simple 1 form / 2 pages site) I emailed TechCrunch and the published it on the next day... I wasn't expecting it at all, but it was a nice surprise: https://techcrunch.com/2009/01/02/what-do-your-twitter-followers-think-conduct-a-twtpoll-and-find-out/

In one week, I had more visitors to Twtpoll than I had for the previous year on my main project (a social network for travellers.)

Anyway, I keep working on it and I was able to live/travel for the next 4 years with the revenue from subscribers and ads. Then I stopped working on it, Twitter launched their own poll little service. And the rest is history.

Since it was still out there, I just re-did it as a white label version of another survey site that I've been working on recently. Check it out: Polls as Chatbots!

So, sometimes do take a little break from whatever you're working on to explore quick side projects... You never know.

    Questions about clothing

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:29 PM PST

    Hey,

Little bit of a backstory, it's my second go around at launching a clothing brand. Last time was a little rocky and I learned my lesson about working with a partner for something so small scale at first, it was his idea but I was providing the startup capital. This time I'm going it alone.

So I'm gonna ask a few questions, ANY answers are appreciated here.

Design: I've got the design worked out, I've just got to work with a graphic designer to get it finished. I was thinking UpWork (I've done some freelance stuff there before and it went smoothly) Would this be the best option? Also previously we had struggled with finding a way to get good product photos. Any tips for this? & as far as getting it modeled with professional photography, does anyone have any experience there? I'm not even sure where to start with that.

Vendors: As far as buying wholesale I'll probably use the vendor I did last time but does anyone have any recommendations as far as vendors go?

Advertising: I've also got the advertising mostly worked out, but i've never worked with AdWords before so that's something i'll be looking into, what's the best way to go about learning that?

*Printing*: By far my biggest problem is actually getting the shirts printed. Previously I was using a guy that was local, who was more or less.."underground". He never got me my shirts in a timely manner and I had to bug him, he was basically just some dude with a screenprinter in his garage. Are there screen printing companies out there that would charge a reasonable price? I found an actual business that did local team jerseys and company shirts ect. but they charged way to much and there's no way I could turn a profit paying that. I understand the cheapest way in the long run would be just to buy a screenprinter and do it myself but i'd like to avoid that if possible.

Shipping: For anyone in the business already, what shipping method do you use? Previously I was able to use the stamps account at my full time job (struck a deal with the owner). Stamps was pretty expensive and the flat rate boxes aren't too much cheaper. After I figure all that out I have to decide about charging shipping, I noticed the first time it was just easier but I think a lot of the lost carts I had were due to shipping.

Copyright & trademarking: where do i start with this? How much is required? Do I have to have the LLC setup?

Is there a better place to source this information? I've looked around for a "starting a clothing store" reddit but I haven't really been able to find anything. I'd like to connect with someone who is experienced in these areas, I will pay for a "consultation" or however they would want to work that out.

I've got plenty more questions that are more in depth and I'll save those for later down the road. Thanks a bunch for reading & thanks for any answers in advance.

    Shopify E-Commerce: Alibaba Logo Prices

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:12 PM PST

A couple of months ago, I took initiative to start my own Shopify E-Commerce brand using a product from an Alibaba Chinese supplier to build my brand around. Once I decided on the product I will use to build my online business around, I reached out to multiple suppliers on Alibaba. One supplier in specific caught my attention and we started to talk about specifications about prices, logo placement, etc. They said they can print my logo for 50 dollars USD per item and I was planning to sell my product for about $29.99, which I don't think I can sell for much more. This clearly will not work because the price of the logo itself is more than what I was planning to sell it for. What would you advise me to do in this situation? Should I negotiate the price down? If so, how do you think I should do this? Or do you think I should move on to another product?

I appreciate any advice I can get and am open to any and all suggestions!

The Story Of Pi - The First Digital Currency You Can Mine On Your Phone.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:11 PM PST

Pi is a new digital currency being developed by a group of Stanford PhDs. For a limited time, you can join the beta to earn Pi and help grow the network. To join Pi, follow this link https://minepi.com/MatijaZ1998 and use my username (MatijaZ1998) as your invitation code.

YOU WILL NEED AN INVITE TO GET STARTED

    What is Pi Network?

Pi is a mobile-first cryptocurrency and smart contracts platform that issecured / owned and operated by everyday people. To achieve this goal, we are giving everyone convenient access to the most proven and compelling cryptocurrency application to date:mining(earning cryptocurrency rewards for helping to secure a distributed ledger). More specifically, we aim to empower more people to help validate transactions and earn cryptocurrency rewards from the convenience of their mobile phones.

Why would I want to mine cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are an important evolution in money, with two key advantages over traditional (fiat) currencies.

    1. Fiat currencies are subject to obstruction and seizure from governments and corporations. Cryptocurrencies are ruled by transparent and auditable code. Currencies like Bitcoin give you much more control over your money.
    2. Cryptocurrencies use distributed ledgers to maintain a record of transactions. All validators that help secure the ledger earn fees from the network. Cryptocurrencies allow a wider community to capture a share of the value created.

Please visit the Introduction of our white paper for more detail.

Why would I want to mine Pi?

Despite the benefits of cryptocurrency, acquiring cryptocurrency today requires risky upfront investment. Pi allows you to earn free cryptocurrency immediately without any risk. Just tap your phone.

Please visit the Utility section of our white paper for more detail on the benefits of Pi.

What is the value of Pi?

Pi is building the world's most inclusive peer-to-peer marketplace. Pi's value will be backed by the time, attention, goods and services that you will be able to buy from other members of the Pi Network. Today, we are laying the infrastructure for this digital currency and the marketplace by building the Pi Trust Graph (see more on the trust graph in our White paper) and distributing the currency. During this phase of development, Pi's value is the same as the value of Bitcoin in 2008.

How am I mining on my phone without draining my battery?

Instead of burning energy, Pi secures its ledger when members vouch for each other as trustworthy. This forms a network of interlocking "security circles" that determines who can execute transactions. This novel approach allows crypto mining on your phone by leveraging your existing social connections, with no financial cost, no battery drain and a light footprint on the planet. Read the technical section in our White paper for more accurate and detailed explanation.

HELP: How can I turn my work experience into a Business

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:02 PM PST

    Hey all,

My goal has always been to build up my own business - I would like to use my experience to help small or medium-sized companies.

Unfortunately I lack any approach to generate a reasonable business idea. Are there some kind of processes to generate ideas and how to validate them?

About me: I'm 25, currently working Full time as an IT Vendor Manager in the Financial industry.

My main tasks are: - KPI/SLA Monitoring - Contract Management / Negotiations - Issue Monitoring and Closing

Unfortunately I don't have any Programming Skills (untalented) which i could monetize in a Side hustle.

What could be the First Step on how to Turn my Experience into real value for SMBs ?

    Thanks in advance!

I’m so sad I could cry right now... abandoned carts been off for 3 months

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 03:32 PM PST

After 3 months of heavy marketing reading all the fucking blogs watching all the fucking YT vids on creating a funnel I did EVERYTHING I was supposed to. Black Friday comes and goes, spent heavy on FB ads, we did good, over 700 orders over 1000 items. Awesome.

Not the smoke has cleared and dust settled I go to check my abandoned cart stats... on Shopify. 0% I'm thinking ???? Nah maybe it's because it doesn't show from Klaviyo.

I go to Klaviyo. I've had this FUCKING service for over 3 months paying 4 times as much as I was with mail chimp THIS SHIT HAS SENT 181 emails in 4 FUCKING MONTHS

IM SO MAD AT MYSELF, I SPENT SO MUCH FUCKING TIME LEARNING HOW TO USE THIS BULLSHIT, I seriously want to cry. We have over 3500 abandoned carts... I just want to cry man

I built a generator to help you write your USP or Social Media Bio

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:50 AM PST

Writers block can be bad enough when sitting down to bang out a blog post, but I often find that the fewer words there are to write, the more difficult each word becomes.

I'm sure you're familiar with it: the dread and indecision that occurs when coming up with something short like your brand name or tagline.

In the past, I found an ad-lib format made things easy when work shopping my client persona for my freelance development business.

    It went like this:

    ----

    My ideal client is…
    a 35-year-old American man

    who makes about…
    $75,000 per year

    working as a…
    freelance graphic designer

    who sometimes…
    designs websites

    and finds that…
developers are difficult to work with

    because…
    they don't understand design

    and so...
he doesn't take on as many web projects as he could.

    If this was solved…
he would take on more high-ticket web design projects, finally closing six figures as a freelance graphic designer.

    ----

Simple enough, right? Ad-libbing makes things easier, but it still might be too close to writing the finished piece to really kill that writers' block.

This weekend I decided to take things further and build out a generator for a similar problem: writing your unique selling proposition, or social media bio (Instagram, in this case).

The generator asks you just a handful of questions, expecting simple answers.

Once you're done answering, it will generate up to 9 potential bios for you based on your answers.

Depending on your business, what comes out might not be perfect, but I'm sure it will help you to get your gears spinning!

Here's the tool: Free Instagram Bio Generator by Hashtag Slayer

Try it out and let me know what you think! I hope that it's helpful, and I'd love your feedback :)

Best way to create an eCommerce site for a small business?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:47 AM PST

Alright guys, I've decided to put a bit more time and money into my small business now that finals are over.

I am not a tech person whatsoever. But, I definitely need an online store for my business. I have already purchased the domain I'd like from google domains.

Is Shopify the way to go? Squarespace? Woocommerce? Or something else? I basically need a way to set up a simple landing page, an about page, a blog section, and then a shopping menu that allows to be shopped by item type, purpose, and by style.

    Thanks!

Idea for doing e-mail marketing - let me know what you think!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:31 AM PST

As I was writing my weekly newsletter I came up with an interesting e-mail marketing idea.

    Summary
There are a lot of online businesses for sale. You can easily find them on broker websites and contact the sellers (most of the time). Many of these businesses which are for sale come with large e-mail lists of clients or prospects. The sellers clearly want to sell the business and move on. You have a business you want to market. You go through broker websites and find adjacent businesses which are for sale. You see which ones come with a large e-mail list. You reach out to the seller and either 1) offer to buy the e-mail list or 2) ask them to promote your product/service to their e-mail list for a fee or commission split.
If I'm a seller of a business, why wouldn't I accept such an offer? It gives me some additional revenue just as I'm selling the business anyways.
If I'm a business owner, I feel like this is an easy way to do e-mail marketing. These sellers are much more likely to accept my offer compared to someone who I reach out to randomly. Plus they are easy to find.

What do you think of this idea? What am I missing here?

Obligatory self-promotion: I write a free weekly newsletter where I highlight interesting online businesses for sale and add my own commentary. If interested, read and subscribe to The Business Inquirer.

To save taxes should I be paying myself more salary or something?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:43 AM PST

My business has taken off and my operating account is building up to the point where I'm worried my business will be taxed heavily if I don't pay myself more in salary or spend it. I'm based in the US and an LLC filing as a C-corp if that helps.
