I’ve been having a great deal of trouble finding someone who will advocate for me on a professional liability insurance claim. Any advice?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:35 AM PST

I had a professional liability insurance policy and there was an accidental breach of confidentiality which led to termination of my contract. The insurance company denied my claim. It is in a different state from where I live and work (I'm in Oregon and the company seems to be based in Iowa, though I'm uncertain because there are parent groups and subsidiaries etc.). Do I look for an attorney in my state? In the state where the insurer is located? Should I not contact an attorney at all? Perhaps I should contact the state government office of consumer affairs or something?

Help with Total Loss Claim (PA) Insurer causing major delays in the movement of my case

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:40 AM PST

I was in an accident on 10/22/2020, I was hit by a drunk driver and am in no way at fault for the accident. I was given a police report number at the scene of the accident and was told that when the report came back I'd be able to get the woman's insurance info from the police report. I was told the report would be available online within 5 to 14 days, so I gave the report number to my insurance and I also checked myself online everyday to see if the report was available. Two weeks pass and no report shows up, so I contact the police department and figure out that the police officer gave me the wrong police report number, so that put a huge delay in my case. When I finally got the correct report number, I communicated it with my insurance who told me they would contact me when they got the information from the report. About 5 days go by of calling and prying about it, and eventually having to get to the point where I had to buy the report myself and email it to them. I was always under the impression that my insurance was the one to communicate with the other driver's insurance so that I didn't have to, as I was also told by everyone else that I'd asked for advice. I would call back almost daily to check back and see what's going on in my case, ask if there's anything I can do to move it along, only to be told to just wait. One of the insurance agents from my insurance company who was handling my case then took a week long vacation so I wasn't able to get in touch, so when I finally did, she told me she would transfer me to someone else because she couldn't answer the questions I had (the same questions I'd been asking every time I called). She transferred me to another person in the damages department who told me "you need to have that car moved like, yesterday, her insurance isn't going to want to pay the lot fee and it's gonna be a huge bill" and told me that at the beginning of my case she told me that I had to be the one to get the other insurance information and contact them myself, which is untrue because I know that was never communicated with me. I'm young and don't have many people to go to for advice, but all the advice I read online told me that I shouldn't talk to the other driver's insurance and just let mine do all the work. I called my insurance at least 5 separate times and asked if there was anything I could do to move my case move along, but no one ever said anything about contacting the other driver's insurance company. Mind you, it's been 5 weeks since my accident and my car is still sitting at an impound yard waiting for an insurance adjuster to go assess the damages. Finally my insurance agent tells me that she'll send me an email with the other driver's insurance agency and policy number, and tells me to call and ask if there was already a report filed. I spend an hour on the phone with safe auto and file a new claim since there wasn't one filed. I was called an hour later to be told that my claim would be denied because the vehicle involved in my accident wasn't insured by them at the time of the accident. My insurance office is closed at this point so I decide to look at the police report myself and see if there's anything I can do, so I see that the vehicle was actually insured under the general and so I call and attempt to file a claim with them, to which I'm told a claim was already filed and to get in contact with my adjuster, which was stated in an automated message which also included her name and number. I've been calling this adjuster for 2 days now with no reply, and my car has been at the impound for 41 days now, collecting a fee. The agent from my insurance company told me that if I don't get a response by Wednesday (today) I should try and get the car moved off the impound lot, which I don't have money to do, and I'm pretty sure is an insurance liability? This whole thing has been really confusing, and I'm really unsure what to do next. I feel as though I may have screwed myself into having to pay huge fees for an accident that wasn't my fault, due to my lack of knowledge when it comes to insurance. Any advice at all is appreciated.

Progressive: Auto and Renters: 2 drastically different quotes when changing policy holder

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:34 AM PST

My boyfriend is 26M w a clean driving record and a platinum progressive member. He did not graduate college.

I am a 23F college grad with some graduate degree classes done that's never had progressive. I also have a clean driving record.

For my quote as the policy holder I was quoted 6 months for 589.50

For his quote as policy holder he was quoted 967 for 6 months

Both quoted auto policies cover both individuals. The rental insurance quoted are around the same price.

Why is there such a drastic price difference between the two?

All of our answers are the same except switching who the policy holder will be.

Could bring a female and college grad with partial graduate work really have that much sway?

Please, I am new to this so please help!

Edit: I am located in AZ, USA

    Insurance not covering birth.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:35 PM PST

Hello. I have my first baby due soon, at the end of the month. My wife's insurance is through her dad and we are stuck in a tough situation. My wife lives out of state from her dad who is the policy holder, and the insurance does not have ANY in-network providers in the state we're in. We have had to drive 2 hours to get out of state to see a doctor for prenatal visits. We don't want to have to drive 2 hours while my wife is in labor to go out of state to deliver our child. The insurance plan will cover the hospital visit, but it won't cover any provider fees for out of network doctors. I've tried adding her to my insurance, but the soonest I can add her is starting January 1st. We've tried applying for Medicaid but they denied us due to our income. We're stuck and need some help on what we can do to deliver in state and pay as little as possible (Ohio).

    Home Insurance Question

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:03 AM PST

Water started leaking from the ceiling of our family room, probably due to a broken pipe. Is it true that insurance won't pay to repair the plumbing, but only the damaged caused by the water? I'm in California, policy is with Liberty Mutual.

Is a SR22 policy the same as Car Insurance? in Cali

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:41 PM PST

This may be a stupid question but is an SR22 the same thing as car insurance? Never been through this and it's super confusing to me :( I got my license reinstated last month but at the time, it was before I had a car. I did get an sr22 (otherwise the DMV wouldn't have reinstated my license) but I'm confused because obviously the car isn't in that policy. I pay a monthly rate for the SR22 policy so I thought it was car insurance as well. Any help is appreciated!

How are life insurance carriers faring with COVID?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:28 AM PST

My insurance claim was approved by my insurer but for much less that eatimated replacement value. Should I try to get them to raise it?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:59 PM PST

    Hello!

I had some recent damage to my home. I hired a public adjustor because I didn't want to try to deal with the insurance company myself.

He submitted the claim for me, estimating the repairs would cost $22,000. The insurance company approved the claim for $14,000.

He recommended I go after the company for the additional amount by either having an appraisal done or taking the company to small claims court. He said he believes he can at the very least have me break even and receive the same amount, but really thinks I will be awarded more if I pursue either action.

What do you guys think I should do? This is the first claim I've ever filed a claim so I have no clue.

He broke down the fees of either option for me and said the appraisal would be more expensive but could be done quicker, and small claims court would have fewer fees but we would have to wait awhile for a court date.

Also, if I do either of these options, would that blacklist me to insurance companies and make them not want to insure me in the future or make my rates go up?

    Homeowners or Car insurance?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:55 PM PST

If a driver crashes into a home without insurance. Would the owner of the home be able to make a claim on their UMUI policy so as to avoid a higher deductible from their homeowner policy? Assuming the damage is at or near the homeowners insurance deductible and would be unlikely to exceed the UMUI limit.

Car totalled on road trip, now screwed on getting home.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:15 PM PST

Maybe this isn't insurance related, but I'm posting this for a relative and hopefully y'all can help out. They are visiting right now and had an accident while down here which insurance totalled their vehicle.

They are currently in a rental while down here, which is fine. The issue is that rental companies will not allow one-way rentals due to COVID. We've called around and can't find any that will allow a one-way rental to get home. The only company willing to do a one-way rental is U-Haul. So unless we have another option, they are literally renting a U-Haul to get home.

Do you guys have any advice?

Do i file a house insurance claim while the house is under contract for sale?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:05 PM PST

I have a home that is currently under contract for sale. However, after an inspection, water damaged was found in two restrooms, the roof in the garage is caving a little, and evidence of previous termites was found where the water damage was. The buyer and I have agreed that i would repair the damages and so they signed a contract agreeing to buy the house.

The cost to repair these issues was more than i thought and i am thinking about filing a home insurance claim to help me cover the costs.

Should i file the insurance claim while under a sale contract? If so, how should i go about it.

    Thanks.

Insurance Broker advanced customer's Premium Payments w/o notice, now demands immediate payment via email months later

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:46 PM PST

    ALABAMA

    Scenario:

Customer hires Insurance Broker to find home insurance. Broker finds Customer a policy with Company A. After three years, Customer requests that Broker find a policy with lower rates. Broker finds Customer a new policy with Company B. Without Customer's knowledge, Broker pays Customer's full premium to Company B. Broker's agent advises Customer the premium will be escrowed and nothing is due.

Two months later, Customer gets a check in the mail made out to Customer for "Overpayment refund". Customer cashed the check with no other correspondence from Broker or from either insurance company.

Two months later, Broker advises Customer via email that he advanced the premium payment and demands the full amount of the overpayment refund immediately.

Two months later, Broker sues Customer in small claims court.

Question: What defenses, if any, does Customer have?

Thanks to all for any guidance.

Seeking help with the vagaries of health insurance

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:36 PM PST

I'm a 57 yr old female who needs some advise about a health plan for 2021. I receive Medicare through SSDI and for some years have paid $300 premiums for a Blue Cross Medigap plan (C) in order to use oxygen at night. I was told only this level of coverage includes durable medical equipment.

I no longer need the oxygen and though I have a chronic condition it is stable, with no major procedures in the foreseeable future. As a recipient of "Extra Help" I also have the option of adding or changing a plan later.

To pay for such a plan I've let many things go that I must now attend to. I'll have to see two physicians an average of once every 2 months with labs (twice yearly). I'll of course choose a good Part D plan for meds. Does another plan make sense or can I get by with straight Medicare this year? Is there anything I must not miss?

Can police determine who is at fault based on damage done to vehicles in an accident?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:10 PM PST

Hi I was just wondering if police can tell who is at fault based on damage to my car as I was involved in an accident earlier today.

I live in southwestern Ontario, Canada.
I was turning left on an advanced green light when a vehicle heading south ran a red light hitting the left front end of my car. No witnesses stayed but a few people had called 911 as paramedic and fire truck had showed up to the parking lot we pulled into to exchange information. I mentioned to the lady how I had the advance and she ran a red light all she said did I? She wasn't even going to go to the reporting station.

I'm thankful noone was injured, just for insurance purposes was wondering how it will be determined who is at fault.

    Thank you

Also next investment is going to be a dashboard cam so i can have evidence if an accident ever happens again.

Test Drive A Car - Insurance?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:55 PM PST

I am in the market for a new car. I currently drive a banged up 1997 Toyota Corolla, so obviously I only carry liability on it. The dealer is asking for my insurance papers before I test drive the new car.

If there was an accident during the test drive, who (or who's insurance) is on the hook?

Any agents that sell Progressive policies want to help a sister out?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:41 AM PST

I'm working on a project comparing Progressive model to the sales model of the big box insurance company I work for. I'm a claims rep and It's a super informal presentation for my department about some of the things out competition is doing, so I don't have access to any of the marketing information or research we likely have at the higher levels of my organization.

I just have a couple questions if anyone is willing to share :)

From what I can tell, progressive agents typically also sell insurance from lots of other carriers and for many lines. Is this accurate? If so, what is the motivation to steer a customer to a progressive policy, if any? Are they typically better priced? Is there some sort of kick back for the agent?

What sort of things do you do for marketing in your local community to stand apart? Is your marketing more geared towards your agency than the carriers you sell?

Has covid impacted how you do business?

I hope this is okay to post and I'm not looking for any trade secrets that would comprise you. I could probably get most of this info by stopping into an agency and doing some undercover work (lol) I just don't want to be weird and waste anyone's time. Plus, covid.

    Any input is appreciated :)

    inpatient care housing coverage

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:36 PM PST

Hello! I'm 20 and know almost nothing about insurance. I've tried reading through insurance handbooks and coverage plans but are having a hard time understanding it, and I've also chatted with my aunt who was a nurse for 40-odd years and worked in hospices a lot and the things she tells me about insurance are things you can't find unless you find out through first-hand experience. So, I figured I'd take to talking to real people.

I'm gonna get wordy, as I'm not sure what details matter or not so please bare with me!

The situation is that I have a sister (23), who is heavily disabled. She cannot see, talk, or walk. She has brain damage from a viral infection contracted during childbirth from my mother's herpes. I do not know all of her exact diagnoses, but I believe she has (on paper) cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. I'm sure more that I'm unaware of. She is on one liquid medication taken twice daily for her seizures, I don't know the name of it. She also has a suppository on stand-by to be taken when she has her seizures. Unsure if it matters, but her seizures aren't very frequent and usually happen while she's asleep (there's been maybe total 4 times where she's been awake that it's happened, and that's been during times she got overheated). She can't do much for herself, she uses diapers, is in a wheelchair, has to be picked up to be moved, and needs food prepared for her. She can use a spoon and feed herself though.

Currently, she resides in AL with my mother while I am in CO. My mother, without getting into detail, has progressively become less and less of a fit guardian for my sister, and since i moved out 3 years ago and are no longer there to pick up the slack I am looking into options. I do not have the time or money to care for her myself, so I wanted to look into sueing for custody of her and then putting her into a home until I finish college, and have a good job to take proper care of her with an in-home nurse. (which will be around 8-10 years, as I'm going into medicine). Though, I am open to avoiding the sueing and talking with my mother about other options and keeping my sister nearby her, and custody in the hands of my mother, as they are close, and it would just be easier on me. The only way I can go a more cival route with my mother though is if I have everything worked out and squared away myself, and with the people I'd need to talk to before going to her, so, I'd still need to figure all this out myself.

Inpatient care though, as I'm sure you're all aware, is horribly expensive. And has a track record of being atrocious to patients, especially those who can't stand up for themselves like my sister. My aunt told me that she needs 3 dianoses (unsure which, she didn't elaborate), and then approval to be taken in by a home where they will take her diability check (which is around $800, I believe), besides $30 that the family will get to cover general expenses for my sister.

I basically wanted to just ask how true that is, if anyone here knows any more information about it, how to find a good home, any cheats to get better coverage, or better insurances for this type of situation that she would qualify for, and if there is a state that would be better for her. She could stay in AL, CO, or OR (as I'm moving there for my masters). Or just anything you think would be helpful or important to know. I'm unsure if it matters, but I make around 11k/yr, usually around 18k/yr but with COVID I've been on unemployment this year. My mother makes around 30k/yr I believe, and my sister is claimed as a dependent for her, however my mom has also been on/off jobless and homeless, so I'm unsure how accurate that is. 30k is honestly the highest point in what I predict she makes.

I'm going to ask other forums that might be better for some other information in this post, so just answer what you're comfortable with. Sorry it's a bit broad, and anything helps. Honestly if you even just have a story of you dealing with a simular situation just so I feel less alone in it that'd be welcome too, haha.

Yet, under state and federal law and guidelines it is separately defined as an "pedal-assist electric bicycle" I feel as though my insurance company is trying to cheat me out of compensation for my bike Has anyone else had this problem before? It's a $2,500 bike...

    Insurance Check Received

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:27 PM PST

I was wondering if anyone had advice on the check received from the insurance company. We use Goosehead and we received a check for $20k for our roof that was damaged from multiple storms. We'd like to use the rest to fix a room that was damaged from a hurricane that the insurance company claims was not related to the roof. If you guys remember Hurricane Harvey...it's pretty obvious how it occurred. Because it was not properly fixed, the next storm that did more damage, added more issues to the same room.

The insurance company determined a $20k payout for the roof. If you can find a contractor that is cheaper, are you allowed to use the rest for other issues?

I've been in military housing most of my adult life and my dad is still at the store getting milk. It's been about 25 years, but he's a bargain guy haha.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is getting life insurance at a young(ish) age worth it or would we be better saving money?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:31 PM PST

I'm 25 with two kids and have been debating how to go about this. I know I should because accidents happen but it feels like a money pit. Still not sure how it works assuming I live to 55 since 30 years is the longest term life I've seen. Does that money just disappear or is the policy extended? Would any new health problems affect the ability to renew?

Minor bumper damage while car was parked - should I file a claim or even talk to insurance? (MA)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:52 PM PST

Yesterday my neighbor backed into my car and made a dent in the fender, diameter of ~10 inches with some minor paint scuffs. It looks like worst case it will require a new front bumper.

He told me about it today and said he's willing to cover the damage. I actually didn't even see it happen, he reached out to me. Very friendly and apologetic, nothing adversarial or sketchy about the situation.

I have Geico, and the following parts of the coverage summary seem relevant:

    - Comprehensive (Excluding Collision), $2000 deductible
    - Collision, $2000 deductible

He was renting a van and otherwise doesn't have a car or car insurance.

I've never been in an accident or had to deal with insurance, so I'm wondering how I should proceed. I've heard that filing a claim, even if it's not my fault, can cause my insurance premium to increase. Should I even talk to insurance? Maybe I should just go get the body work done and leave insurance out of it?
