    I joined a startup in 2016 on the Customer Success team and switched over to be an Account Executive last year. Last week, I closed a deal that took me over $1M ARR in total sales. That has been my personal target since getting into sales so it has felt like a big achievement for me!

    It has been a STEEP learning curve to get this far and, in all honesty, much harder than I expected given that I already had a lot of product knowledge from my experience on the Customer Success side.

    Along the way, I kept track of the best resources I discovered and it has grown to 120+ books, articles, podcasts and videos!

    I figure now is as good a time as any to share them with others who might be just starting out, or looking to hone their skills. I have learned a lot from others in this community, so I wanted to share it here first.

    Does a career in software sales always equal one of stress and anxiety?

    Hey y'all,

    Like the title asks - is a career in software sales always going to be one that results in stress and anxiety day-to-day or week-to-week? I know every job has varying elements of this and more but I feel like sales is one of the industry's that feels it the most - especially because of the monthly to quarterly quotas.

    My question is has anyone figured out how to have a career in sales (in tech) but also maintain a quality of life in regards to work/life balance, general peace of mind and not resulting in being strung out, always feeling like your job could be on the line, drinking more and self-medicating, etc.? Seems to be all too common in the space.

    If so, how do you do it? Are there any habits that you find uber valuable for this? I'd love to reach a point to make good money in sales, enjoy the process and be zen like throughout it all. Might be a pipe dream though.

    Anyone ever feel like management is working against you?

    I'll try to be as brief as possible.

    4 months into my first sales position after being a service tech for 4 years with the company.

    I sell heavy equipment. We're paid a percentage of gross margin on the deal. What I wasn't told during the interview process was that all of our deals are subject to a levy. So whatever margin we make on the deal, they retain a percentage of it, and use it to bring down prices of our used inventory. Depending on the deal, it could essentially mean that half of our commission disappears. This is just one of the many tactics they use to keep us from making too much money.

    Anyone else encounter issues like this? I know the obvious solution here is to just sell more equipment, but I can't help but feel like I was deceived on what type of money I would be making in this position. Any tactics to combat this would also be appreciated

    Is TQL a good place to begin a sales career?

    I have an interview with TQL today and I've read quite a bit about them, both on this sub and other places online. From what I've gathered, TQL is tough work for very little starting pay. Many people have said to get out as quickly as possible. However, I've also read they have an excellent training program.

    With this in mind, would it be prudent to accept an offer at TQL, get the training (which I believe is six months), stay there for a while (~a year?) to hone my skills, then leverage the training and experience to get another job?

    Some background: I'm 24 and looking to transition from marketing to sales, mostly for the earnings potential.

    Told a prospect that’s it’s been a good year for me...

    I've had a smaller prospect who I've been working with for 2 months. I'm selling them an cloud ERP system to run their business.

    We did a demo, they loved it and know our company name. I sent budgetary pricing and walked them through it. We are at the top of their budget but it's kind of a smaller deal for me.

    Over the last two weeks he's been anxious to get revised pricing out of me. So I've slow rolled him with internal approvals and management discussions. I then sent him the "revised"pricing and we talked.

    He was still flinching at the price so I played my hand. I said that it's been a good year for our company and me so i I want to help them maximize their opportunity to get our software at a good price. I asked if we had the decision he said yes it's our deal.

    After I said that I had a good year and wanted to work to help in onboard our product as easily as possible he relaxed. I won his trust.

    He'll probably get a good little discount, 20%, totally normal and I just cut through a ton of bullshit. Gives me a clear path to year end close and I didn't have it forecasted.

    I guess my point is that every interaction has a purpose. I set this up during the initial demo and first price review. It also helps to let a prospect know that you have a healthy business and want to partner with him to realize the value that you can bring. Changes the power a little.

    10 tips for Founders doing Sales (from a Founder)

    I have a technical background (I am a Physicist by training) and had 0 experience when I first started doing sales. Here are the 10 most important things I learned since I started doing sales.

    1. Be passionate about the product you're selling.

    As cliché as this might sound it's the most important thing when it comes to sales. If you are passionate and truly believe in what you are building and selling then everything else becomes much easier. Transfer enthusiasm!

    2. Know your customers.

    The easiest way to go about this is to solve your own problem. If this is not the case then do some market research and get initial feedback from the companies and people whom you believe would benefit the most from the solution you are building.

    3. Don't oversell. Don't commit to things you cannot deliver.

    Overselling will result in a lot of headaches and retention problems. Don't promise features you are not planning to build and align your prospects expectations with.

    4. Learn from others.

    Ask for demos of competitor products and other tools you are thinking about buying. You can learn from what they do well and not so well and apply those learnings to your own sales process.

    5. Listen and improve your pitch.

    Listen, Listen, Listen! You will get a lot of feedback from customers during your first calls, use that feedback to make adjustments to your messaging. Record your demos and listen to them in order to refine your pitch over time.

    6. Persevere! Always remember to follow up.

    Sales can be a grind and it's especially tough if you have never done it before. You will be faced with rejection and get let down every single day. Let go of your ego and don't take feedback personally. Persevere!

    7. You won't close all deals.

    You will not be able to close all of your deals. Take notes for the lost deals in a structured way so you can analyse the percentage that fell out of the funnel due to timing, pricing, competitors, etc... Nurture the closed lost deals.

    8. Be fair when referring to competitors.

    Your prospects are smart and most of them know the market as well as you do. You don't need to trash talk or belittle your competitors. Focus on your own message and what makes you different.

    9. Fire bad customers.

    Bad customers will take a lot of your time and might steer your product/company in the wrong direction. As a founder letting a customer go is not an easy decision but sometimes it's just best to part ways.

    10. Celebrate the wins. 🎉

    Celebrate every new customer! It's easy to get too ingrained in the daily grind of sales and building a company and forget to celebrate the wins. Celebrate every win with your co-founders and your team.

    Even if you have never sold before, you can still be 10x better than they are as a salesperson if you believe in your product and your mission.

    Light Email Merge/Email Tracking for Outlook

    I'm looking for some good lightweight email merge and tracking for outlook. I don't need templates or a CRM component. Currently using EmailMerge with Emailcaddie, but it is makes my outlook act buggy and seems to have a lot of issues with consistency, meaning I will be told that I can't track right now or that I have exceeded the limit for the day of people I can send to even if I haven't.

    Here is what I am looking for:

    • Reliable email tracking that can track a merge and gives me the choice to track individual emails.
    • Preferably shows who on the email is opening if there is multiple people, but does at least need to show where the person is opening from.
    • Can mail merge and track at minimum 500 contacts a day
    • Does not show an "unsubscribe from this email" link, the goal is to send personalized emails
    • Can have logos and standard signature features as if it were a single email

    I hadn't heard this interview with Naval Ravikant before but I had listened to him on Tim Ferris's podcast recently. I listened this morning and many of the teachings are profound.     Sales Opportunity Generation

    Topic is pretty straightforward. My question is, where are you guys getting your sales ops from? This is mostly geared towards SaaS sales folks, but happy to hear from anyone really.

    Is it mostly outbound? AE and/or BDR cold outbound? What about inbound? How much of the inbound is true SQL inbound asking for a demo or trial?

    Uk companies information

    Industry/Field Advice?

    Hello!

    I'm using my throwaway, because I am locked out of my main and don't have time today to deal with that.

    I am unemployed (covid) and have been in sales for ~4 years. I have a background in consumer packaged goods and advertising/digital marketing sales.

    My background in sales has struggled. I have taken low paying jobs to gain experience and it's hurt my career in my opinion, because it didn't give me opportunities to really excel. I've also taken salary jobs to just get laid off 6 months later. Luckily I graduated in 2017 so I'm still new to the world.

    I don't want to watch my career fall down the drain even more.

    So, this where I really need solid advice. I'm stuck on what industry I should move into. Tech is stable or recession proof, no? But I'm passionate about advertising/marketing sales. However after covid, I worry if ads & marketing is a stable or recession proof field for the future. I have really strong job leads in both industries right now.

    My head is spinning and I genuinely cannot think straight anymore. My unemployment is exhausted so I'm more desperate to just grab a job, but that's the exact way I got into the mess to begin with.

    Hospice Marketing, boss wants me to switch territories. Good time to ask for a base salary raise?

    Hello, as the question states I work for a Hospice company as a marketing representative. One of the other reps who had been there longer just resigned today, and our boss asked me to switch to his territory, as there are more constant referral streams from there as opposed to the new territory I'm currently building. Should that come with a raise? If so, how should I ask about a raise?

    FYI: The other rep made at least a 30% higher base salary than me since I'm only a year out of college.

    Hi everybody, I need some advice on how to market myself for the role of a BDM for a commercial loan brokerage/bridge loan company. Obviously, my person to person contact will be greatly scaled back for the near future, so how should I market myself on social media, etc?     Warm Introduction to Management/Top Reps

    Good morning all.

    Last week, I started a new role as an AM for an established company. The company has brought on several new reps this quarter and we have been scheduled to capacity in onboarding and training. Per my previous Inside Sales role(s), I was taught that it is beneficial to reach out to the team's supervisors and the team's top performers (metric wise) for a warm introduction and soak in their knowledge of the company, the role itself and the customers.

    My request for a brief one on one introduction to the team's supervisors was granted, however I could instantly tell that they thought my reasoning was odd and not beneficial to either of us.

    My question on this topic is simply, am I in the wrong for reaching out for a warm introduction to my internal team & leaders in order to break the awkward barrier and gain as much knowledge as possible? Further, any advice on how to tweak this sequence in the future is appreciated!

    List Buying

    Hey y'all,

    Work in HCM space generally selling against more legacy providers. I am a fairly new rep so nearly all of my business comes from cold calling and not referrals (for now).

    It would really set me up for success to have some data about which organizations use particular providers. However, every list we have ever bought has been garbage.

    Are there any good services out there that have accurate lists/competitive intel, etc.?

    Final Med Device Interview: 5 Minute Presentation In Teams. How do I go about this?

    Hopefully this will be the last time I have to post a question here! I'm so thankful to all of you for the help you've offered over the last few weeks. I have a final interview this Friday, and it's a 5 Minute presentation on a topic of my choice. I am leaning towards cycle touring/bike packing, as it's something I love to do. What should the formatting for a presentation of this nature and length be? Should I choose something a bit more technical? The direction was a bit vague, which I assume is intentional. As always, any and all help is appreciated!
