How many of you bought your business?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 03:30 AM PST

I'm looking at a few businesses for sale in my city that will allow me to hire a business manager for operations and be hands off. I've seen a lot of businesses for sale and I'm curious how many of you have bought a business. What has your experience been, complications and any tips or resources you would recommended for someone looking to do the same. Cheers!

Edit: The businesses I'm looking at are equipment hire, gyms, IT, educational, government contractors, construction resources, freight companies, logistics, day care etc. A far fetched dream but the goal is to acquire a few, or enough where I can net $80-120k in salary.

Employees want to make more (envious)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:33 AM PST

I have three brick and mortar location with employees that have been with me 5-7 years already. My business model doesn't have high traffic but a steady 5-10 customers easily managed by one person only. They avg 650-850 weekly and do not have any other degrees and are roughly 23-26 year old people so I wouldn't say it's the best paying job but got a small city with little to no high paying jobs around me it's a fair pay I believe and higher than Walmart etc with minimal work.

Lately I have been seeing that one employee is either burn out of doing the same thing or is simply envious of what I make wanting more pay. His mentality slowly changed to "I think if we make the company the money we deserve half of what I bring in" that's roughly 1.2k weekly. I understand perhaps them wanting a pay increase but at this point I feel like perhaps they are envious or someone is brain washing them to think I'm abusing of them and paying them little etc. however I can always get someone retrain and pay them less. However this person is good at selling my product and would like to retain him if possible.

My question is what's happening? Is he simply outgrowing the business, tired, or perhaps actually someone might have made him think he can do it on his own. I know I can't keep people forever however I treat them well and like I said if I can retain them longer and save me the time of finding and training new people that would be great but I sure don't want mutiny amongst my staff or for this to spread.

What approach should I take? Why do employees take that mindset

Anyone else having a hard time recruiting entry level employees?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 02:47 PM PST

I run a small business with approximately 50 employees in Chicago. Two years ago, when I took this over, the average Tech here was making about $13 an hour and I wasn't having much trouble filling openings. I am currently offering full-time with benefits at $16 an hour and having a heck of a time getting people to even show up for interviews. I'd say 50% arent showing up at all, after they have applied and confirmed their interest.

☎️ Do YOU host sales calls? What has your experience been like?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:10 AM PST

    Hi all,

Do you provide your website visitors with the option to schedule sales calls with you? If yes, what's the most annoying thing about the whole process?

I'm working on putting together a website for a new business and was wondering about everyone else's experiences and best practices.

    Thanks! :)

What is the difference between Proof of concept vs Prototype vs Minimum viable product?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:35 AM PST

When existing businesses implement the new idea into the system, many organizations fail to adopt the correct strategy by not evaluating the idea and validating its feasibility. Developing new products requires satisfying the end-users by creating products that help them to solve their problems. We have witnessed these numbers of times, sometimes fortunes 500 organizations also fail to woo their customers when it comes to introducing a new product.

Have you wondered why? So let us pursue the matter without further ado. We're going to discuss the concepts POC vs Prototype vs MVP, an ideal approach to kickoff startup. All these terms are applicable for organizations at the pre-seed, concept, and seed levels on the record- welcome on board!

The challenges every business face while choosing an MVP, POC, and Prototype can sometimes lead to a wrong selection. By doing so, your organization may result in leaking the finances and overall business growth. MVP vs. Prototype methods can be used together or independently, depending on the project roadmap.

Dropping a customer who is still interested in your product?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:58 AM PST

I have a customer who is interested in a pair of $7 earrings. She asked on Friday to put them on hold for her until monday. She lives on the other side of the city and doesn't have a car to drive to pick them up, so I offered to drop them off while I was in the area. We set up a time for us to meet on Monday but she didn't show or answer my texts or phone calls. Hours later she sends some messages saying "sorry something came up sorry".

I could understand if something important came up so I offered to go out of my way to drop them off on Tuesday only if she sends an e-transfer. She said she doesn't have an e-transfer.

She later asked if I can hold them until Thursday. At this point I'm getting frustrated. I've already spent more money on gas then what the earrings cost, and there's no other way to getting them to her because she has no way of paying me other than cash.

Then hours later she sent me a message that was obviously meant for someone else. Something about paying cable and needing $100 dollars. I didn't respond because it was obvious the message want meant for me.

Today (thursday) she just sends a "?" (Didn't even say anything about the previous message)

What do I do? I don't want to go across the city again to deliver cheap earrings to someone who might end up flaking out again. I've been taking all the initiative in this situation and this woman can't seem to get herself organized. I just want to drop it and not respond at this point but I have a feeling this is the type of person to get all salty about it and leave a bad review on my page. What can I do in this situation?

Thoughts on starting a mailbox installation company?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:44 AM PST

I have been considering starting a small service company, and this idea jumped out at me. Apparently there are a few companies who offer installations in other cities, but none in most.

I was thinking a price point of $150 to install any wood/metal/vinyl box sounded about right to start. Here's why I like the idea:

    - generally, no licenses required

    - It's an easy task train workers, but not so easy that customers will want to do it themselves

    - Low competition, except from handymen, who aren't really advertising it well

    - It's repetitive. I assume a worker could really get this down to a science and knock out installs in an hour or less

    - You could eventually, roll mailbox sales into the company model for additional revenue

    - It involves home improvement, which people are going crazy about right now

    What do you all think?

Thoughts on starting a Laser Tag business?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:52 PM PST

Here's my thoughts as to why it might be worthwhile (after COVID of course) :

    1. It doesn't require any special licensing, and the guns just use electricity/battery, so low recurring cost.

    2. Unlike other cities of similar size, mine only has 1 laser tag place, however, it is attached to a bowling alley and it is a "minor" room off to the side. One type of cartoon generic gun, 1 small arena that never changes. Bowling is their main thing. There used to be a LaserQuest in the city, but it shut down due to COVID.

    3. I can get a full set of Laser tag gear/scoring system for ~$5000 which will cover 12 players. These are the good stuff, like mock AK-47s or other models (have you seen a laser tag sniper rifle?), a capture point offering more game modes than just deathmatch (which is the only thing the bowling alley side room offers).

    4. Before making the jump to rent out a place/invest a lot, I could start small and offer to do birthdays/events using the customer's property (or a park) to test the waters on a part-time basis (meaning I would only have to spend ~5k on equipment).

What do you all think? I know it's no longer the 90s, but there's still demand for laser tag, right?

What to know before applying for a business Loan

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:45 PM PST

We're looking to potentially opening a business in 2022 and we have no clue what to do! I currently run a small Amazon FBA/Ebay business while my wife works a 9-5, our credit is decent in this 660-700 range. What are some key things we should be doing in the baby steps leading up to approaching a bank for a loan. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back and do it over again? This is a giant leap of faith for us but we believe in the vision and this could be something that changes our families future any tips or links to books, videos... really anything would be greatly appreciated.

    Ship boxes out of state

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 04:34 PM PST

    Hi,

I need to move 2 boxes (about 80lbs/box) from LA to Chicago.

I think most movers i contacted don't want to move boxes that are low in quantity and carriers like usps and fedex have a limit of 70lbs/box.

are there any companies that could ship just two boxes?

Thank you and appreciate your comments

    Should I open a law firm as a business? (x-post from r/entrepreneurs)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 07:27 PM PST

Hi! I'm considering going to law school with the goal of opening a law firm. I've put a lot of thought into it and I'm not sure if I should go or not.

I've broken down the pros/cons of opening a law firm below

    Pros:

    1. Low overhead / startup costs - All I need for a law firm is a computer and a small office
    2. High barrier to entry - lawyers need to take the bar exam to practice
    3. High profit margins - Same as #1, most of the money I make will be profit

    Cons

    1. Opportunity cost - Three years of law school is a huge investment that I could have spent doing something else
    2. Huge competition - There are a tons of unemployed lawyers flooding the market
    3. Cost of law school - 3 years of tuition could be over $200k in loans

Those are the pros and cons. What would you guys suggest? Would those three years of law school be better spent starting another service type business?

    Is AHGG an ok name?

Will my employers rates go up if I apply for UI due to Covid quarantine?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 06:47 PM PST

I have tested positive for Covid 19 and need to quarantine. I work for a small electric (3 people) in Arizona that does not offer PTO. I would like to get unemployment for at least one week of my quarantine if it would not negatively affect my employer. Any business owners out there have experience with covid related UI claims?

Low-cost or no-cost contract signature system

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 06:41 PM PST

Private investigator here. Before I take on a new case or client, I need to have them sign a multi-page contract.

The setup I currently use is to pull up a template, fill in the particulars, then email a pdf.

The problem is that it can be time consuming and difficult for the client to print, sign, then scan the signed contract, and email it back.

I'm looking for something quick and easy for me and my clients, similar to DocuSign, but low or no cost.

    Any suggestions?

    Business Consulting Help

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 05:45 PM PST

I started a small business consulting business about a month ago because I wanted to help out some small local businesses during the pandemic. I wanted to offer free services by making money from affiliates and sponsorships and views from a podcast and maybe YouTube videos, where I would interview businesses. I'm not looking to make a profit from consulting at this time since I have a full-time job.

However, even when I am trying to offer free services, I am having trouble getting responses from any small business I reach out to. The majority do not even response to any of my Facebook messages or emails.

I have had more success by cold emailing asking if they would participate in an interview podcast but often say they are interested and then don't respond past a single email.

Is there something specific that small businesses are looking for? Or a certain way I should approach them? I just want to sit down and talk with them to brainstorm ideas on how to expand their businesses or help create partnerships with other businesses. Is that too much to ask?

    Any pointers would be helpful.

Costs of publishing a Fictitious Business Name notice in newspapers.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:03 AM PST

I applied for and received my business licence recently. First time self employed, so I'm learning as I go. Mistakes have been made. I applied for a business bank account, and was told I needed a form relating to the title of this post. I didn't originally want a business bank account, what with Venmo, Paypal etc being available, and having limited transactions per month...but one client insists on sending me checks made out to my business name. After reading up on it, there are a lot of hoops to jump through, and some people online say it could cost thousands to publish the notice 4 times over a month (will probably be cheaper to drop the client), some say it's not so expensive. I'm in San Mateo County, CA. Anybody have any experience with this? Thank you in advance!

One business name, or multiple under one LLC?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 05:33 AM PST

I am taking steps in starting a full suite graphics business, to include vinyl stickers, signs, screenprinting T shirts, vehicle graphics, and eventually embroidery as well.

My thing is, these fall under separate categories. I'd love to eventually have a self-designed clothing/apparel line, a client-based screen-printing business for customer orders, and a sign or vinyl business.

So my question is would it be better to run all under one business and name, or separate them into 3 separate business, with 3 separate names, compartmentalizing each into its own market?

    EDIT

When I say separate business, I mean just names for marketing. All would fall under one LLC, but just market my own shirts under one name, customer designed shirts under another, and vinyls and signs under a 3rd market name.

How to drive traffic to your shop?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:30 AM PST

I have a business idea, a product idea, and have done a ton of financial planning. The last thing left is to do is to actually make a mock-up of the product. But I've got cold feet. My website is beautiful, my "Coming Soon" landing page is short and to the point, but I'm really worried about marketing.

I'm a professor with an academic degree—I don't know anything about marketing lol. I know ad services like google, facebook and instagram ads are helpful, but ideally I want to beef up my email list before I drop my money on product production.

I know that many successful businesses test drive product interest by drumming up subscribers before they make and sell the product, I just don't know where to start.

I have a tiktok where I thought of filming the production process, and an instagram for product photos and shopping, obviously. I also have a twitter, but I might delete it because I have no idea what to even retweet with it.

But without a product...how do I help my target audience to find me?

    Are you an entrepreneur?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:24 PM PST

I am looking for a handful of entrepreneurs and business owners, especially failed businesses, to interview about their experience when starting a business, like lessons learned, mistakes made, advice to new business owners, etc.

I am a high schooler interviewing people about their experiences, and sharing that information with people seeking advice when starting their business, or even people just curious about the success and failure stories of starting a business.

If you are willing to share your experience as an entrepreneur, drop a comment below saying you're an entrepreneur and I will message you! I am hoping to do these interviews via email. If you are interested in viewing the transcripts, you can also drop a comment and I'll add you to the list!

Adding a DBA - what's the legal process?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:58 PM PST

    Hey all,

I started a business about a year ago. It's kind of taken off (50+ clients), and my business name sucks. So I want to amend it with a DBA.

    I'm a c corp in Delaware.

If my site is branded as "Tim's Tools", but i am incorporated as "Production Solutions Inc." can i get in any legal hot water?

What is the best way to create a DBA?

I've googled around, but wanted to check with some real humans for feedback.

    Website Host Recommendations

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:27 PM PST

We've been using bluehost for the last couple years for our ecommerce business. Running a wordpress site with woocommerce for our store. It was fine at first and fairly affordable when we were a brand new business, but recently we've had issues with 10+ seconds of load time which is huge on an ecommerce site. It's all load time before receiving any data so it's on the server end, and we've recently done a redesign during which our website was shut down and the home page only had text stating so, during that time we still had 10+ seconds of load time. So I'm looking for recommendations from other small businesses about where you host and have had good experiences. We're hoping for something not too expensive as this has been a tough year but it's got to be consistent and good loading speeds. I guess to get an idea for traffic, in our peak season we generally get a few hundred sales a day.

I appreciate anything you can share. :)

TLDR: Looking for recommendations for quality website hosting that's fairly affordable.
