If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions, you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you? What country do you live in?

    • What are your objectives with this money? (Buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors? Any other assets?)
    • Any big debts (include interest rate) or expenses?
    • And any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

The Hardest Financial Skill is Getting the Goalpost to Stop Moving

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:43 AM PST

Please be safe out there everybody. It's fun and exciting and all but remember that there are also times when you can decide that what you have is enough and cash out. If you have millions going into a Yolo, maybe also make sure you keep a bit on the side.

At the end of the day, just make sure you find your point where you stop because sometimes it's good to decide that what you have is enough instead of constantly chasing higher up the chain of health. You will always seem poor next to those you compare yourself to!

Anyway happy trading, just please try not to risk your wellbeing.

How would you invest half a million dollars right now?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:55 AM PST

    Hi guys,
I worked in Silicon Valley for about almost a decade, and in tech for about 15 years. I feel kind of burnt out and I want to build passive income.
I was able to save around half a million dollars. After the pandemic hit in April, I chickened out and sold most of my (tech) stocks, which was retrospectively a mistake.
Currently, I don't own real estate, and I'm not convinced it's the best investment to do right now.
2 thirds of my portfolio consists of cash on my saving account (the rest is tech stock, crypto, and 401k).
I intend to invest half of my cash in tech stocks again, index funds / ETF, and maybe REIT, and keep the rest for later investment, maybe in hard real estate assets when market drops significantly.
Any recommendation before I start losing money?

Pity Party: How I am Down in a Bull Market - share your biggest “Why the eff did I do that?!” stories please

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:17 AM PST

Hello folks. Oops, I did it again ... panic sold $PLTR for a $2.5K loss yesterday and now just canNOT believe how dumb I was. This is easily my third if not fourth time panic selling. I am just looking for others foolish mistakes and what they learned from them. What I learned is I am not good at trading and from now on I will only go low and slow ... I've learned this lesson about four times now so I need it to stick.

I am also hoping this post maybe helps someone else from making my same mistake. The old cliches are true ... you gotta just ride these waves and stick to your plan. My impulse plays never go well ... even if some of them do, one of them is all it takes to wipe out those sweet gains.

Anyone care to join my pity party and share their experiences (I just want them to feel better about my stupidity!)

Are you more bullish on EV and autonomous vehicle related stocks or lithium and battery related stocks/etfs? Why?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:11 PM PST

Are you more bullish on EV and autonomous vehicle related stocks or lithium and battery related stocks/etfs? Why? What positions do you hold? Why did you choose it over something else?

    Two ETF's to compare:

$LIT an ETF related battery technology for evs and autonomous (LAST $62.31 & GROWTH 116% in 12 months)

$DRIV an ETF related to autonomous and electric vehicles (LAST $23.97 & GROWTH 60.52%)

Personally, I see more risk related to the car companies themselves. There are so many factors that come into making them succeed but the materials and tech needed for the batteries will only continue to improve and become more valuable unless there is something that comes out over night and replaces ev tech/lithium batteries.

VanEck filed again today for a Bitcoin ETF.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:06 AM PST

Thoughts? VanEck filed again today for a Bitcoin ETF. I believe this will be the second time they file. Before, they were seen to be one of the more promising ones to have it passed first. After withdrawing their previous application, they've submitted a new one today.

    Roth 401k or traditional 401k?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:04 AM PST

Hi, I'm in my early 30s and I contribute to both a traditional and Roth 401k (50 50). I max it out each year. I'm from Europe and might want to live part of my retirement out there. My wife and I file jointly and we're currently in a high tax bracket (37%). I have no way of predicting wether I'll be in a high income situation when I/we retire.

    1) Should I lean towards Roth 401k or traditional 401k, or keep contributing to both?

    2) How is the tax rate calculated for retired folks that begin withdrawing funds from a traditional 401k? Is it for example the sum of all current sources of income (social security, dividends, property income etc)?

Some Pros of Roth: I like that I can trade and realize gains throughout the years, and not have to pay capital gain taxes on them. Are there other pros? Thanks!

Do margin loan interests compound? daily or yearly?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:03 AM PST

say I have zero cash and $50k worth of stocks now in an account at fidelity/interactive broker. One day, I decide to withdraw $10k cash as my margin loan to pay my house mortgage and my margin loan balance is $10000. I just let it sit and don't pay back a penny from now on.

Let's say my interest rate is 10.8%, so everyday it is 0.03%. Fidelity/IBKR will charge me $3 everyday. after day one, I owe them $10003; after two days, do I owe them $10006 (simple interest) or $10006.009 (compounding)?

Is my cash balance -$11080 after a year? ($10k principal + $1080 interest, simple interest, no compounding)

Is my cash balance -$12160 after two years? but if it's compounding yearly, it would be negative $12276.64 (==$11080*1.108).

    Thank you for your help.

Short Position: The Big Short (Movie)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:59 PM PST

Why Short a company when you can buy long term Puts on it?

Ok, so in the movie the Big Short by Adam McKay (based on real events of the 2007 crash) the hedge fund managed by Doctor Berry creates a Short position on the whole Mortgage Backed Securities market by "borrowing" stock shares from the banks who do the sketchy securities (specifically the Credit Default Swaps i believe) for a certain price every year... which means that if they are not right in a few years he loses all of his money due to that interest... my question is why didn't he just do a whole bunch of long term Option Puts? Wouldn't that be better because he could have less at risk with just the premium And not worry about losing all of his money from holding a Short Position? Or is there some special rule about Hedge funds that I don't know that doesn't allow him to have such large amounts of money in options?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:44 AM PST

    Hi,

I only recently realized that I can make post-tax contributions into Retirement accounts, so went about creating the following spreadsheet to organize my understanding. Was wondering if anyone can help review for factual accuracy, in particular the rows that represent post-tax contributions into retirement accounts, as well as the columns that represent the tax treatment of gains at Distribution (but overall as well)

    $ARCT completely misunderstood

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:42 AM PST

I honestly can't believe how 1 person's opinion can trigger a 50% drop in this company.

The drop was for the following reasons:

    - Not moving fast enough

    - Not enough antibodies

    - THE BIGGEST REASON: May not be a 1 shot solution

    The facts:

    - Not moving fast enough:

They are literally on the timeline that they outlined 4 months ago in their past video.

    - Not enough Antibodies

The antibodies after 1 shot of Pfe/ biontech was essentially equivalent to the antibody response in ARCT's first shot.

    THE MAIN DIFFERENCE:

ARCT's vaccine in 1 shot provided ample antibodies, but also a strong Tcell response. Much better than any other vaccine EVER created.

    - May not be a 1 shot solution:

If you watch this video and actually understand what they're saying. This is ON TRACK to be a 1 shot solution. If ARCT was creating a vaccine like PFE they would not be valued like this. The reason they are valued at what they are is because of the type of mRNA vaccine they creat that is self replicatin and inducing a strong T cell response. Over time it is already, and will continue to show, that this response is effective after 1 shot over time.

Why T Cell is more important than antibody: https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/what-is-the-role-of-t-cells-in-covid-19-infection-why-immunity-is-about-more-than-antibodies/

    Who cares;

If you seriously think that the couple of vaccines available now are ample for what the demand is you are strongly mistaken. Vaccine demand is for a surplus of vaccines. A multitude of vaccines are needed b/c not all vaccines work for everyone.

ARCT has the lowest dosage for a vaccine, single shot (yes, still works), cheaper, EASIER TO PRODUCT, EASIER TO STORE, EASIER TO TRANSPORT. ARCT-021 will be lyophilized, or freeze-dried, so it's can be stored at regular refridgirator temperatures.

Every other vaccine requires expensive equipment to keep it the right temperature at FREEZER LEVELS, not REFRIDGIRATOR. This is a huge difference number 1, number 2 the size of the equipment carrying the vaccine makes a huge difference.

PFE has a vaccine that requires 2 doses, stored at freezing temperatures. This is heavier, more expensive, and requires double the shipment / person.

And for everyone waiting for ARK's approval. They haven't sold, last time it dropped they waited 2 days before buying so you have 1 day left. After that ARK buy goes through you've missed the boat.

See you at $90 in Jan. 👍

    Post to layout my ideas

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:11 AM PST

So this isnt a normal post. I personally do my thinking when discussing and putting my ideas out there, so feel free to comment your ideas and such and I'd love to read all opinions.

So my plan going into 2020 is to stockpile cash in Robinhood, as that's the brokerage I use, and wait till April. A lot of people will be blindsided by the fact a market crash is coming and while the country prints ever more money I believe that regardless an absolute massive market correction is coming. Easily on par with the great recession if not the great depression or worse.

This is evidenced by the fact that food and other basic commodities are rising in price, stocks are skyrocketing and the average wage is dropping. The economy is so far out of wack it's about to snap in my opinion, and of course this isnt as well researched as some on here so do not take my words as gospel or anything more than a man trying to get his ideas straight.

So anyways back to it, I want to have that capital ready to buy up massive amounts of stocks and ETFs on cheap, specifically good dividend companies that will fall and growth oriented ETFs

I am glad the stimulus is coming in and I will most likely after I make a decent profit know my riskier holdings be selling those and just hoarding cash. As I do not plan to miss this one I will also be pulling large amounts away from my paychecks everytime as well as keeping any dividend income.

So why April? I think that will be about the point when I have reached my limit on cash that I'm willing to stockpile and then I will start cautiously investing, mainly in international markets and foriegn stocks and maybe some bonds. Anything to diversify away from the dollar due to the current instability in it and the rapid devaluation of its buying power in the near future.

I will be focusing on holdings like VTI, VT, VXUS and VEU (yes I know those overlap, bite me) and looking at swiss government bonds.

I dont think the dollar will collapse or the economy die, however it would be foolish to not think that it will be massively crippled by what these politicians have done.

Anyways yeah that's my idea, may also try and pick up a rental property in the ensuing housing market crash so we shall see, however if you have any ideas how i should invest my money post crash let me know, also no i will not be buying Bitcoin or anything as i personally dont care to understand or use it until it is a valid medium of exchange outside of a mean vessel to transfer USD or other currency.

Thanks and have a wonderful night

NIO Jan 9, 2021 Battery day event

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:26 PM PST

So Jan 9, 2021 is NIO battery day. What are the plays here? Tesla battery made bank up their price targets and went on a major bull run post event. Do we expect the same? What are your thoughts?

They made no statements about cell chemistry, cell supplier, size, weight or cost of the battery pack. Nio plans to hold the 'Nio Day' in Chengdu on 9 January 2021 – an event that actually takes place between the years. "CN Tech Post" expects the new battery to be presented during the event.

In its current models, the electric car startup offers batteries with 70 and 84 kWh, and a 100 kWh option may follow this year, which could meet the demand for higher ranges.

Coinbase: sued, slandered and still going up

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:52 AM PST

I do not like Coinbase as an exchange, but I think it will be the opportunity of a life to get in now. Which I did. (I described a way to get into CBSE Pre IPO here)

Since buying in two pretty bad pieces of news came out:

Bloomberg: Coinbase Sued Over XRP Commissions After SEC Pursues Ripple

NY Times: Cryptocurrency Start-Up Underpaid Women and Black Employees, Data Shows

While I do not thing any of those things have any merit, normally this would have a negative effect on the price regardless. Especially if a company is already overvalued by any useful metrics, which CBSE seems to be.

But there is no selling pressure. We are currently trading at 263 USD, up from 238. Which makes me believe Coinbase will be a mind-blowing IPO in 2021. I believe there is a lot of potential upside left. Because of the reasons mentioned in the other topic (so nothing about fundamentals, just expected IPO price action).

I am long CBSE and this is NOT financial advice.

Momentum ETFs - what are the reasons against?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:29 AM PST

Many speak of not being able to beat the market over the long-run. As such, the core of an investment portfolio should contain a passive index ETF that tracks the entire market, such as the MSCI World (or regional alternative). However, momentum indexes such as the MSCI World Momentum often do better or only very slightly worse than their baseline counterparts, including through the last two major financial collapses.

Why would one not build their portfolio around a momentum ETF, given the potential for greater returns at very little added risk?

    Examples:

    MCSI World Momentum

    S&P 500 Momentum

    Fidelity COVID withdraw - lawsuit?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:00 AM PST

Tried to make a Covid withdraw from my 401K. Called at around 11am PST or 2pm EST (2hours before market close). End up being on hold for 2hours 27minutes. Finally get through to fidelity rep who assures me I am ineligible for Covid withdraw because market is closed and the government has a strict deadline for 12/30 4pm EST. I continue to ask and try to get him to execute my trade with no luck. After the call I do some research and find out in invested in mutual funds which exclusively ONLY trade AFTER 4pm EST and read up on the IRS website where there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the deadline being 4pm EST. Did anyone else experience this today? Is this grounds for a lawsuit?

What is your long-term view of MSFT?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:56 AM PST

The reason I'm asking is because when the discussion arises about the biggest tech companies and their possible upside in the future I mainly see the likes of AAPL, GOOGL and FB being mentioned. Microsoft however doesn't seem to be named a lot.

So I'm curious how people on this subreddit look at the company in the long-term. I'm quite bullish on them to be realizing the same amount of gains in the future as these other companies given the very solid foundations the company can rely on and they have the means to jump into any project they want.

    Let's discuss.

    How does one trade oil?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:38 AM PST

Day traders trade the volatility during the day but oil is pretty much all day (correct me if I'm wrong). How does one actually trade oil futures? Buy Low sell high? There's a bunch of guys that made a huge load of money when oil was pretty much "take it off our hands". How does one do that? Anyone have any experience trading oil futures? What would be the equivalent of investor relations pages for an oil trader to read? Please share some advice for a new trader. Will upvote.

How do I invest my first $100.00 dollars? What would be the best stock that’ll be better in the long run?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:28 AM PST

I'm 18 and in college and I want to work my way to financial freedom. I'm in college going for a trade but I'm going into the military after for four years so I can be able to get experience to be a private military contractor, so I can use that money I make to do more investing. How do I do that as I never done it before, and I'm not rich enough to afford a financial advisor or whatever job advises that. How do I go about my first investment, what apps or sites, or what affordable way can I do it? What would be the best stock(s) to invest it? Is there different types of stocks like for multiple investments at once?
