I have a radical idea for a zero profit business and I could really use some help.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:50 PM PST

    Hi guys,

This is going to be a long one, so TLDR; I want to start a small business hiring people from impoverished nations to follow their dreams while paying them from my salary with practically zero risk.

So where to begin, I recently watched the latest attenborough film and the line, "Lifting people out of poverty" as a means to reduce climate change really struck a chord with me. It wasn't until very recently, when a friend of mine told me about her circumstances that I realised I could single handedly do this for some.

My friend is an English Major in Indonesia, in a city called Yogyakarta, she told me how she lives "comfortably" on 80 dollars a month, how a good wage in Indonesia is around 300AUD or 3,000,000IDR. And I thought to myself, wow that's an insanely small amount of money.

In the past few years I have wanted to save enough money so that I could afford to take 6 months off and follow my passions, but it's always seemed very out of reach, and I thought to myself I could literally hire someone for 6 months and it would cost me 1800 bucks. to put that in perspective if I am frugal in a month I can easily save that.

The thought keeps recurring to me about this, what if I was to pay someone to just follow their passion? I could train them for 6 months even with ease just paying them a good living wage from my salary, I could essentially improve their living situation exponentially without really even feeling it, and I thought back to what David Attenborough had said.

The long and the short of it is I want to hire people in impoverished (or even just very cheap to live in) nations to follow their dreams and try to turn it in to a profitable business, I would like to stick digital if possible because that's obviously a massive point of access and I could set aside some cash for initial outlay, (laptop etc) I would like even more to target single parents, having grown up quite poor I imagine what that sort of jump in living standard would have done for me and I feel like I could have an intergenerational impact... for 300 dollars a month.

My initial thoughts were that I would try to make it profitable long term, for instance, start a digital business (my first thought was music sample packs for producers) pay the person their salary and set aside 50% of their earnings for them as a bonus at the end of the year, then if the product became profitable past inital outlay and salary I would either reinvest and hire more people or set my kickback to be just 5% of the profits creating a continuous profit stream for the employee.

The biggest problem I have is that I have no business experience, essentially I would be looking at this as giving away money in a targetted way that improves peoples lives and helps me feel like I am actually doing something to help. But I need to keep in mind taxes and any ramifications that might befall my employees, I also have no idea about international law around this sort of thing as this would essentially be an international business with me being in Australia.

Could anyone point me to some resources or lend some time in explaining some of the problems I may encounter? I have also thought about engaging a not for profit in the region and offering a sort of grants program, would this sort of thing be feasible? and would there be any downsides to doing it this way?

I'd really appreciate any insight in to this as I feel really great when I think about the miniscule but important mark I could leave on the world.

    Cheers

    Jeff

Need Ideas for Research Paper..."Corrupt Business Practices against Competition"

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 08:54 PM PST

    Hey everybody!

(Not sure if this is the right place or not for this question...if it isn't the right place, please let me know where is best!)

I am working on my thesis for my degree and I am looking for examples of "black hat" examples of how small businesses might try to "ruin" their competition.

I have searched all over Google and cannot find examples of cases like these. But we all know they happen in day-to-day business.

About the only things I have found on Google is things like "Business 'A' ran a fake ad against their target business and made potential customers mad at them for "false advertising" or "Company A hired a bunch of people to write bad reviews about Company B" but that's about all I could find. Looking for other creative examples of ideas people might have tried to clear out their competition.

Does anybody have firsthand examples of how one business attempted to ruin their competition? (Of course, please "sanitise" any examples/company names/identifiable info so companies cannot be identified since this is going in a research paper).

    Any help would be appreciated!

TL:DR Writing research paper into underhanded ways businesses try to take out competition and need ideas I can write about.

China Sourcing | How To Get A Product Made?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:52 PM PST

People often have good product ideas and business plans, but lack knowledge of how to move forward and turn their ideas into reality. The following suggestions are a good starting point to all new entrepreneurs and aim to give a better understanding of how a product idea can be brought to life.

    Step 1: Making the Drawing
You may have many product ideas or designs in your head, but the first and most important thing to do is to put those ideas down on paper so that you can share your product idea or design understandably with other people.

If you are not proficient in using design software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, then the best way is to make a hand draft first, and then hire a designer to make a professional drawing for you. Good drawings will save you a lot of money in the future. If your drawing is unclear, it will be hard for manufacturers to make perfect prototypes and this means you may end up spending a lot of extra money on revising prototypes over and over. Always prepare professional and clear drawings before you start creating a prototype!

Don't know where to find a designer?
You can either hire a local designer or find a freelancer online. Just type in "freelance designer" into Google and you'll be surprised. You will also find that it will be much cheaper to hire a designer from India, China or Pakistan.

    Tips:
What to prepare when looking to get a price quote for your product

Apparel items: Digital drawing, measurements and material specifications. You need to provide a size chart, indicate the fabric/materials, color code and provide any logos/prints together with their size and position.
Plastic products: CAD drawings, material list, etc.
Metal products: 2D drawings with measurements, material specifications, etc.

    Case Study:
A client from Texas came to us with hand drafted designs looking to get some apparel items produced. Because the drawings were unclear and the quantity very low, it was difficult to find a manufacturer willing to take this job. There is a gap between ideas and reality. When the client's drafts were made into a prototype, they were not satisfied with the outcome. We revised drawings many times and explained the nuances of manufacturing and importance of clear drawings to the client. Once we had helped them make a professional drawing, we got a great prototype made in two weeks.

    Step 2: Creating a Prototype
Once you have your drawing, you can either make a prototype yourself or you can find a manufacturer to make the prototype for you. A prototype is very important for production and Vona Consulting can help you do it at a low cost using our partner manufacturers.

After the first prototype is made, you will have to test the quality and functions of the product. You are likely to find problems, but don't worry – it is perfectly normal to revise drawings and prototypes several times before they are perfect for production. A much worse case would be to produce from an imperfect prototype and then having to change it when already in production stage. That can be both very costly and time consuming. In order to save your money and time in the future, always make sure your prototype is right before production.

For a lot of products, you cannot produce the prototype yourself without professional equipment. In those cases you can either find a domestic or overseas manufacturer to create the prototype for you. Normally, you can save about 50% in cost when using a manufacturer in China.

    Tips:
    Prototyping costs in China

Apparel: Usually around $50-$200 per piece
Plastic Products: Sometimes, prototypes can be made by 3D printing or rapid prototyping which means you may not need to pay expensive mold cost to make a prototype.
Metal Products: Tooling cost must be paid to make a prototype.

    Case Study:
A client from Seattle was looking to make a prototype of a plastic cup design. They had contacted many domestic manufacturers in the state of Washington and found that the cost of a prototype would be around $4800. After we checked the drawing with our engineers in China, we advised the client to make the prototype in China by rapid prototyping. Going with this option only cost our client $650 and they very happy with the outcome.

    Step 3: Find a Manufacturer
After you have your prototype, you need to find a manufacturer and make a decision about whether you wish to manufacture domestically or overseas. Based on my experience, manufacturing in China is the best option for start-up businesses. China, known as the 'factory of the world', can make your product at an extraordinarily low cost with relatively high quality.

However, it can be very difficult for starting entrepreneurs to find a good manufacturer from the immense number of factories in China. This is why it is a great idea to find a reliable China manufacturing company like Vona Consulting to help you with the process and solve any problems you may face.

    Tips:
    Where to find a manufacturer

    Alibaba.com
    Sourcing Agents
    Trading Companies
    Manufacturing Companies

    Case Study:
Finding a reliable manufacturer can be difficult and most companies listed on Alibaba.com are trading companies. An entrepreneur from Delaware was looking to produce T-shirts. They searched on Alibaba.com and found hundreds of companies. After contacting several of them, they got quotations ranging from $3-$14. Confused about the big price differences, they chose the cheapest option and after paying $150 for a sample, they waited for 3 months to receive it. Sadly, the sample was not good and the company they chose asked for another $150 to make a new sample. This client then contacted us and we helped them produce 300 pieces of good-quality T-shirts in 25 days. Do not trust anyone on Alibaba.com before they have proven that they can supply good-quality products at a reasonable price.

    Step 4: Make a Sample
It is always better to make a sample before moving to mass production. Normally, it can take the manufacturer around 15-45 days to make a product sample. After you get the sample, check the quality carefully and if there are no major problems, then you can move forward to place the order. Normally, after the sample is approved, about 50% of production cost shall be paid in advance before production. After the initial payment is made, the factory will make a pre-production sample. You can then ask to have the pre-production sample revised until you are satisfied.

    Tips:
For small orders with a quantity of lower than 500 units, factories may often not finish samples on time. That is because you are not one of their "big clients" and therefore, unfortunately, are not at the top of their priority list. If you are producing a small quantity, frequent follow-ups at least twice a week are necessary to get updates and urge the factory to finish your samples as soon as possible.

Step 5: Confirm the Price and Sign the Contract
You may have got many different quotations when choosing a manufacturer in China and the prices probably vary significantly. Not all manufacturers in China are honest and trustworthy. They may give you a fake price list to get your order first, and once the sample is made, increase the price significantly. Always confirm the final price before mass production and make sure to sign a formal contract that indicates the agreed prices to protect you.

    Tips:
A formal contract is important. If you do not have one, you can contact me to get a template of a contract.

    Step 6: Mass Production
After you have approved the pre-production sample, the factory will start the production. That usually takes around 20-60 days, depending on the quantity and product type. After production, you can hire a third-party inspection company to inspect the products. After the inspection, the full balance shall be paid before shipping.

    Tips:
Always pay 100% attention to the quality and delivery times.

These are the six basic steps to get a product made. It is a general reference guide for common products, the process and things to bear in mind vary slightly depending on your specific product and circumstances.

I have helped over 200 entrepreneurs manufacture or source different products in China. Among these are apparel items, plastics, hardware, wood, etc. Please feel free to leave a comment or email me if you have any questions about how to get your product manufactured.

    S-Corp or Sole Proprietorship

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:34 PM PST

    Hello Everyone,

So recently thought about creating a business that uses my name so that I can use it to purchase stocks, invest into business directly and stuff like that. Basically, having a business that's my name but its "my name" the business so I can have business expenses and use that business to make investments. However, my confusion is which of s-corp or sole proprietorship if anyone could tell me which of the those two options is the one I should go with or if there is a better option can anyone mention it. Also if I do use either of those what can I do about prior investment I already have? is there any way I can transfer it or something like that?? thank you

Navigating through all the Gurus and Business Opportunities

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 04:13 PM PST

I have been interested in the entrepreneurial space for some time now. I started selling baseball cards years back and have tried several different ways of making money online. At this point, it's hard to know what's legit and what isn't. While selling sports cards is fun, I'm looking for a more steady source of income with the opportunity to scale. I see tons of ads promoting different ways of money as we probably all do but it's obvious most of them are bogus. Looking for some online businesses and money-making opportunities that have worked for any of you. Appreciate the help.

    The Independent Artist's Revenue Machine

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:10 PM PST

Let's imagine a brain storm. At the centre of this brainstorm is a fictional artist and the storm includes all streams and sources of income.

Let's review the artist's situation. The artist wants to be 100 percent independent forever even after death. They want to retain ownership every aspect of their art and wants to avoid situations where they have to compromise that, and possibly leave ownership rights to their next of kin.

The artist is virtually unknown. The artist is young (18-25). For the sake of argument the artist makes such incredible music that they cater to every demographic and market. They will undoubtedly be a leader of industry and will be a game changer. But for now, our artist has no fans as they do not upload or publish their music (yet).

So far the artist has 3 albums worth of music. This incredibly productive unknown, also shot music videos for all the singles of these unreleased albums. The artist wrote, performed and produced everything they make. This artist, although never having performed live, is a more than great performer for what they do. They would be looking to tour as soon as they released their project and promoted themselves to the point where they gained a loyal cult following.

Now as far as I know the artist can make income from the following sources.

    1. Music distribution - amuse, distrokid, (which music distribution service is best and reliable)

    2. Music licencing, publishing, royalties, copyright - BMI, ASCAP etc (which performance rights organisation is overall best and reliable) (are they necessary) (are there alternative routes that could further guarantee the artists need for independence)

    3. Music video distribution - Symphonic distribution, AdSense, YouTube (what is the best process for an artist to upload their music videos, preferably uploaded in a YouTube account they created themselves)

    4. Music touring - are there any tour promoting agency for independent artist (how was it done before lockdown and do you see it changing post lockdown) (what is the process and what documents or memberships are necessary for global scale performance, visas, carrier bag limit exemption etc) (as this artist composed, performed and produces everything on the record they must EMPLOY external musicians, what documents are necessary for them)

    5. Merchandise - Shipstation?

    Anything else?

Now to help run this machine smoothly, consider the following:

    1. Musicians union - are they necessary?

    2. Lawyer - what can they offer and what do they expect in return

    3. Accountant - what can they offer and what do they expect in return.

    Anything else?

You can discuss or enlighten this post on any of the variables above. If there is anything crucial that I missed out please include it in your answer. If there are guides or handbooks that you can recommend and sum it all up, include those as well.

Thank you for reading and participating.
