    Yup, seems relatable

Came across an audit working paper at work that has perhaps been rolled forward a few times too many.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 01:44 PM PST

Today I told my boss "I don't know what the fuck I am doing."

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 04:10 PM PST

I told my boss I didn't know what the fuck I am doing. He took it pretty well. He sat down with me and showed me how to do things. But I still think I'll get fired or transferred. I really suck at my job.

Somehow landed a job during covid! - imposter syndrome setting in.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:19 PM PST

Think I got pretty lucky. Was laid off 7 months ago from a job I wanted to quit anyways. Some jobs just suck that bad (small mfg company accountant. Was 1 of 1). I'm pretty sure covid prolonged my stay there because the shut down occured right when I started calling out a bunch for a ton of interviews. Historically, the VP never kept someone in the position I had for longer than 9 months. I was well past that.

I enjoyed my 7 month vacation immensely. But it was time to go back to work.

Still in the MFG industry, just at a company that doubled my pay and is about 100x the size in revenue. My first week ends tomorrow, and the size of the company is daunting. I understand everything I'm doing from an accounting standpoint, but learning a new ERP system at a scale I'm not used to is almost overwhelming. I know I can learn it, but I got some major imposter syndrome going on right now.

The team I'm with is super supportive and engaging, so that's a relief. Maybe it's new job jitters. How do y'all shake imposter syndrome?

How difficult would it be to transition to transfer pricing in big 4?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 07:24 PM PST

I got placed in private company services - tax and plan to rotate into international tax. Can I realistically switch over to transfer pricing afterwards?

CC to fulfill CPA requirements? or MACC at my undergrad?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:33 PM PST

I am a junior finance major at a school most well known for its accounting programs in the South Bay area in LA. I want to get my CPA license 100%, and I have the option to do a MACC here, and its also very much in my budget. However, I know CC's offer tax, audit, and intermediate accounting and it's FREE for me, but most importantly I can take these classes during winter and summer. My question is: can I take these CC accounting classes concurrently during my university's spring and fall semesters for CPA credit?

Job search not going too well. Thoughts?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:31 PM PST

I graduated in May with a bachelor's and the summer kind of felt like a fever dream. There was the pandemic and I was getting paid to babysit my siblings by my state government so that was nice, but now I don't have an actual job and I realize I should have been trying harder before to find one before. I have been applying to everything I can on indeed/LinkedIn and I just feel so unqualified. All I have is this degree and no experience, and yet I don't even think I will be able to get the simplest bookkeeper, staff accountant or AP/AR jobs I am applying to. The staffing agency I'm working with has given me 1 lead in the past month that "closed" as well and haven't updated me since.

I don't know. I'm 22 and I don't want to feel like I'm going nowhere in my life. I'm seriously considering joining the Airforce reserves just to get work experience and be challenged. I don't know I just don't know. What should I do?

I told my mom I'm going to put my all into applying for jobs this month and if nothing comes of it I'm going to look into the Airforce Reserves.

Anyone work in public accounting that is heavily tattooed?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 06:44 PM PST

I don't currently work in public accounting, I work for a private company. I am heavily tattooed and have about 12 ear piercings. I don't show my tattoos at work but keep my earnings in. Just wondering if this is frowned upon in public accounting, or if anyone has had any bad experiences being heavily tattooed even if you don't show them at work. Thanks!

    If this isn't true.

I shifted blame on staff a senior over something minor, I am having an existential crisis, what can I do now?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 01:56 PM PST

My manager gave me some vague instruction (don't check those trial balances, I don't trust the clients, let me do it first) and I didn't hear that, totally my fault. So I made sure the TBs balanced and the staff I had with me volunteered to help. I asked a question regarding this task to my manager. She ignored me.

We just had a meeting with the client. She pointed out I was insoburdinate to her (in truth I am just an idiot that didn't pay attention, there was no malice on my part) and for a split second, to try to save my ass, I said "hey but I didn't tell the staff to help with that". Manager just scolded me and ignored the few words I said and I am glad she ignored them because I am feeling extremely guilty for doing something that goes against my principles.

I don't know how to make up for this. Nothing bad will happen to the staff, but I still consciously tried to betray this person just to save my ass. I've never been in this situation before. Maybe I should give easier work and good reviews to this staff to make up for my negative karma?

Where in the guidance can I find why not to tell the client materiality?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 07:35 PM PST

I remember from AUD that the client is not supposed to know the exact materiality dollar amount for fraud risk purposes. I'm looking for the section of the guidance that states explicitly not to tell the client and what to do if the client learns materiality. PCAOB or AICPA applies, I don't care. Any help is welcome!

Further, what is the point of the literature search tool on the CPA exam if it doesn't exist in real life? Like am I supposed to search through each individual SSARS and SSAE file until I find what I'm looking for?

Only one client on schedule (Audit)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 07:19 PM PST

I started a new position this week as a semi and I knew during my interview it would be for this sector but I did not think it would be my schedule from now until March.

My question is, would this concern you? Note that this is one of their BIGGEST clients at a pretty big firm so I'm happy to be apart of it.

I just have crazy layoff fear at this point because I got laid off twice in the past 15 months from no fault of my own. At this point I feel pumped and dumped at accounting firms.

The good news is I have all day billable hours 1 days into the job. Ill do the best work I can. Is this normal?

New audit associate in big4. Do not know what to expect.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 01:46 PM PST

So I went through the whole recruiting process with one of the big 4 companies, I applied for audit intern position but somehow managed to get offered a full time position. I know how the whole process in terms of operational/team project activities work, I know there is a busy season ahead, what I do not know is how busy and/or difficult it really is. Anyone care to share about their very first season experience? I have some, however very little accounting experience, but I learn giga quickly thus I always felt like I would do ok in most situation. Now, after reading through this sub I am thinking that gave up my life by signing on that deal and it is going to be an unbearable stress for upcoming 4 months...

Canadian CPA moving to the USA

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 02:55 PM PST

I just passed the CFE and will be obtaining my CPA designation in about a month.

I'm thinking of going through the process of getting the US CPA and eventually relocating to the States. I was wondering if anyone would have any recommendations on which state (s) would have the most opportunities for accounting positions. I'm particularly interested in New Jersey since it's close to NY and seems to have a lot of accounting job offers but haven't really looked at other possible states.

Also, I currently have 2 years experience in public accounting at a National mid-size firm (not a Big 4). Would my chances of getting hired as a controller/senior accountant (I would like to switch to industry if I relocate) be greater if I were to get a couple months of experience at a Big 4 or it doesn't really matter?
