Losing web design work because I have a day job

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:03 AM PST

A majority of prospects looking to hire me for my web design services do not appreciate me only being available for working and consulting about their web sites in the evenings. I work a nine to five while establishing myself to eventually make the jump to full time web design. I absolutely have the time and will to finish their projects on time despite that fact.

I'm losing a ton of business because of this, and I understand the uncertainty this causes with my prospects.

I've thought about not mentioning I'm only available in the evenings, but what if they call me while I'm busy working?

Is there a way to go around this, or do I just take what I can get till I've saved up enough to leap into this full time?

How to manage internal share holding?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:47 AM PST

How do entrepreneurs manage shares? Lets say I start a startup with 4 friends, each investing 25% so each gets 25%. But now some of us put in more effort, some of us don't do anything (because they only want to be investors).

How do I quantify that work and how do I tell when I can add another proccent to my share and decrease theirs? Or do I have to decide that at the beginning and start with a bigger proccent right away? In this case, what if I find out there are some things I didn't predict that require more work than anticipated?

    Thanks!

Is there room for another competitor in the personal finance / budgeting space

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:11 PM PST

The idea is to dramatically simplify budgeting down to a single category: free spend. We take your income and subtract fixed and predictable expenses, leaving you with the amount of money you can spend each day on whatever you want. You track expenses in this category manually, creating better spending habits daily, which otherwise get lost in automated budgets like Mint.

Would love any input on the concept. Website here. Launching on app store in January.

Anybody lowered PayPal rolling reserve successfully?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:56 PM PST

Has anybody successfully renegotiated their rolling reserve with PayPal?

We've been served a 25% 45-day rolling reserve for the next 180 days. I feel like we should be able to lower at least one of the three numbers.

Anybody has any experience successfully improving such a situation? how?

How do I help someone turn their existing food business(es) into a local online delivery service?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:18 PM PST

I amt trying to help a friend turn their business into a local online delivery service. They own a pretty big local chain (dozens of popular restaurants across our region) but haven't offered delivery until now. I was wondering how I can help them go about this for validation before they sink money into a major website and app. They don't want to hire full time drivers and are trying to create a solution for on demand delivery drivers. Is there a online "white label" solution for this like shopify or something? If not I'll have to hack together a quick MVP.

There are only 6 types of objections out there that are killing sales ☠️ And people who know how to deal with them close up to 64% of their prospects.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:58 PM PST

Did you know there are only 6⃣ types of objections out there that are killing your sales? ☠️

    .

And if you know them, you set yourself up nicely to overcome them and turn them into opportunities.

    .

Objections are a core part of the everyday life of every person that's in sales. No matter how valuable an offer you have, prospects can always find a reason to push back on what you're offering.

    .

But there's some good news: Sellers who successfully defend their product against buyers' objections can have a close rate as high as 64%.

    .

How you behave when a prospect pushes back can make or break your sale.

    .

So to help you go into every objection prepared, let me share with you the 6 types of objection that prospects have:

    .

    1. Lack of interest

Example: "I'm not interested" or "Send me information to review."

❎ What NOT to do: Say "ok" and send generic information.

✅ What to do instead: Ask further questions to uncover topics of interests or pain points that you can tailor to the prospect's needs.

    .

    2. Pricing

Example: "I can't afford this" or "It's too expensive" or "We don't have the budget."

❎ What NOT to do: Give in on your price being too high without establishing the value that your product/service delivers.

✅ What to do instead: Focus on the value that you have delivered for clients just like them. Challenge them to focus on the benefit over the cost.

    .

    3. Lack of authority

Example: "I'm not the decision maker" or "I don't have approval."

❎ What NOT to do: Immediately move away from this person to engage someone else higher.

✅ What to do instead: Empower someone of lower influence to be your champion. Make it worthwhile for them to help you by establishing that you will address some of their needs.

    .

    4. (Perceived) Lack of need

Example: "We use a competitor" or "we already do this" or "we built a solution ourselves".

❎ What NOT to do: Get defensive and/or bad-mouth the competition.

✅ What to do instead: Be prepared and knowledgeable about the competitor they are using or evaluating. Ask questions that address areas that competitors/their current system may lack and where you are at a position of strength.

    .

    5. Lack of urgency

Example: "This isn't the right time" or "That timeline doesn't work for us."

❎ What NOT to do: Plan to follow up months later without actionable next steps.

✅ What to do instead: Dig deeper to find the real reason that your prospect is missing the value. Or, if timing is genuinely off, make sure to get a commitment from the prospect that you can hold them accountable to in the future.

    .

    6. Lack of trust

Example: "I'm not sure if this will work for me" or "Does this actually work for others?"

❎ What NOT to do: Become defensive and start over explaining yourself

✅ What to do instead: Educate your prospect on why and how it works, why it will work in their specific case, and what benefits it will bring them.

    .

Objection-handling is extremely important if you want a high conversion rate and high-level sales results.

    .

For every obstacle you face, there's a way to handle it and increase your chances of closing a deal. I hope these 6 types of objections help you understand objections better and unleash the sales champion that's locked within you!

    .

𝕻.𝕾. Let's have a discussion! Leave questions, challenges or ideas below and let's make this thread more exciting.

    .

𝕻.𝕻.𝕾. If you have any sales-related challenges that are a pain, it would be awesome if you share them in the comments. If I can solve a problem for you in my next post, that would be great.

I'll be here to answer all the questions related to this topic – 'coz that's my 'thing'. Let's go! 👇

Edit, Saw the 3400 logo reuse logos for other logos Like that water drop is used in another of his logos

How do you market for B2B?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

B2C marketing has been fairly simple for me. I've mainly used social media ads (FB/IG) and I've started around 3 ventures in that space so far that have managed to make sales (I sell gaming PCs and I have an upholstery cleaning service).

However, the cookie I can't seem to crack is how to go about marketing to businesses. I've just never figured it out. Say I want to start a software consultancy, how do I market to businesses so they know they should reach out to me if they want a piece of software?

How to turn Craigslist/OLX into a direct sales website?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:55 AM PST

In my country (I'm from Portugal) eBay doesn't exist.

I use OLX (similar to craigslist) to sell products. It is used by a large variety of people and although it was originally intended to sell used products, lots of people use it to (re)sell new ones. Advertising and getting your listing on the first page is really cheap.

The problem with the website is that it does not have a "buy now" button. To buy something you have to contact the seller, agree on the payment method, and then you actually pay.

This leaves a lot of room for doubt and, in my opinion, decreases conversion rates immensely.

I am reselling those Bluetooth Airpods type headphones. I wrote some good copy with a call to action. I am getting messages.

The thing is, this takes too much time between the prospect messaging me and actually buying.

How can I reduce this time, and increase my conversion rates?

Immediately send them a link to PayPal, or maybe create a Shopify store and link it in the product description...

I haven´t yet thought of something that does not look super sketchy and does the job.

I would love to hear your suggestions!

What the US election tells us about product development

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:32 PM PST

    Hi All,

**NOTE: The below is in no means an open discussion about politics - it is not meant to incite any political offense or promotion. It is merely looking at human behavior.

I want to discuss what lessons can be learnt regarding innovative hardware products.

Situation: Imagine you are working for a hardware startup that is trying to bring something that has been used in research for years to the consumer market and you want it to be a raging success.

The US election has been polarizing to say the least. I've been asking myself 'what can be learnt from the way people voted in terms of product development.

I have a few take thoughts but would love to discuss when developing an innovative product.

    1. The innovative device must produce greater benefit for lower input. Ie. the introduction of smartphones allowed us to put less effort in to get more information out. This is also the goal of most AI systems - do the classification for us like recommender systems.
    2. People want simplicity. A product must be made so simple that a monkey could learn to use it.
    3. The learning curve must be tiny in order for adoption to occur
    4. If it is an innovative product, the majority of people will probably not want to learn/know how it works - just how it makes their life simpler.

What refinements or additions to those key notes would you make?

I want to open a spa & salon, what’s the best plan of action?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:49 AM PST

So I want to own a spa & salon I have a few ideas but not sure which is best

Option 1. Renting a space in a city

This seems like the common option for starting out but I really don't know, I would have less control of the space, couldn't expand & would have to pay rent but it might be more marketable for people sense it's in town.

    Option 2. Buying land

So Im really into the idea of homesteading and if I bought land I could not only sell my spa & salon services but could rent out cabins/ "glamping" sites and also any other profits I can make such as dog boarding & selling homemade products

Option 3. Owning land & renting

I could separate the 2 things have a spa & salon and a homestead just separate

My concerns for buying land: 1. Not in a city, the land would obviously be in the country which I feel might negatively effect my profit as in people don't want to drive (x) miles to get (y) service

    1. Homesteads aren't super glamorous, so if I'm marketing to people that want a relaxing time on a farm the might not be the people that want to buy a facial or lash extensions

    2. Would it be feasible to market to both customers the ones that want a relaxing spa trip in the country and just someone who want to get a hair cut?

Canadian Software Company Best Way To Collect USD From American Companies

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:31 AM PST

So I have a small SaaS software company in Canada. We are potentially making sales in the US to American companies. We do B2B sales. The plan is to take visa cards from our US customers and bill them monthly. I'd like to ideally keep the funds charged in USD. Has anyone ever done this or know how to get USD from US customers and keep the funds in USD? Is this as simple a opening a USD account in my Canadian bank or what? Has anyone used Stripe or Square to manage this?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

7 Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:41 AM PST

Are your marketing dollars being spent effectively?

Once upon a time when I ran painting franchise, they told us someone had to see your marketing SEVEN TIMES before they acted on it. This could simply be that they get 7 postcards from you. Or, it could mean they get 1 post card, see your truck twice, see your yard sign, get a door hanger, get an email, then see you on the internet.

In my experience, the following order of marketing is the most cost effective per lead. In other words, I would recommend maximizing your marketing budget on #1 before moving on to #2. It should be noted that this list is in order assuming that you are paying someone else to perform these services for you. If you are going to do all the marketing yourself and don't know how to perform SEO, you may be better off starting with door hangers or yard signs.

    Marketing Strategies for Small Business

    1. Re-market to your Existing Lead and Client Database
    2. Search Engine Optimization
    3. Craigslist
    4. Yard Signs
    5. Truck and Trailer Decals
    6. Google Adwords
    7. Direct Mail/Door Hangers

Re-market to your Existing Lead and Client Database

This option should be maximized before pursuing any other marketing tactic! The idea here is this: don't go chasing down new customers when your current client base isn't buying all of your services yet. Your clients already know you and trust you, so they are much more likely to buy from you. Also the less customers you have, the less overhead you have (collections, customer service, billing, etcetera).

Email is free! Once you have already paid to acquire this client and leads database, you should maximize the return on this list. Using Service Autopilot Automations or another service like MailChimp you can easily email this database automatically.

With this same database you can re-market using digital marketing such as Google Adwords and Facebook Marketing. If set up properly this will only show ads to these same people to keep your expenses low.

Another tactic you can use is to simply call through these lead and client lists to touch base and keep an open relationship. If you don't have time you can use a service such as SendJim to send voicemail bombs which are pre-recorded voicemails that get automatically sent out to your clients upselling them on your services.

    Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization is the act of manipulating your website to be at the top of search results on search engines such as Google and Bing. For example, when you search for "Landscaping <your town>" ideally you would be the first search result. As you can see 50% of our leads come from Google searches. This is huge! This should be where the majority of your energy should be focused and where the majority of marketing strategies for small business should be focused.

Not only are more leads generated though Google, but they are also better quality leads because the people that contact you are actively searching for your services. Other marketing tactics such as direct mail are targeted towards people who are not necessarily seeking out your services. You are sending a postcard to a cold lead hoping that they might want your services. It is a harder sell!

You can perform SEO yourself, or hire an outside agency such as Small Business SEO for a few hundred dollars a month. Whether you perform SEO yourself or hire an outside firm, you should add regular blog posts to your website, make sure you are listed on all the major platforms such as Facebook, Yelp, and Google My Business, to name a few. Your website itself should have on-site SEO work performed so that your site is relevant to search terms.

    Craigslist

Surprisingly, we get quite a few leads from Craigslist and it is very affordable. We run ads and renew them once a week. One we run for general landscaping, we run ads for job applicants, and we also run season-specific ads for certain times of the year. Ads only cost $5 to post for a service ($25 for a job ad), and as you can see depicted above this is where 11% of our new leads come from.

    Yard Signs

Yard signs are CHEAP and EFFECTIVE. Through UZ Marketing we are able to get 100 double sided 18 x 24 yard signs WITH STANDS for just over $300. That is just over $3 per sign. Before discovering UZ Marketing we were purchasing signs from signsonthecheap.com which was roughly $5 per sign, and before that we were purchasing them locally for $25/sign. I do believe in buying local whenever feasible but for less than 1/5 of the price it doesn't really leave me much of a choice.

So what we do with these yard signs is plaster them around town in public areas such as by telephone poles and major intersections. The signs should be precise and easy to read- remember people will be driving by these signs at 50 mph+. We put up different messages on the signs for different times of the season.

    Truck and Trailer Decals

One of our lead sources is "Saw Truck." If you are driving a truck around, you need to have your company name and phone number on it, period. The initial cost to decal a trailer might be around $1500 or sign a truck is a couple hundred dollars but it pays off for the lifetime of the vehicle!

    Google Adwords for Small Business

As you can see about 50% of our leads come from Google. This is a mix of paid marketing and SEO mentioned above. Ideally you maximize your SEO budget before you start using Google Adwords, as roughly 80% of users click on organic (non Google Adwords) links when searching, plus you don't have to pay for the SEO traffic. On Google Adwords, you pay for each click. With my landscaping company we spend about $500/week on Google Adwords. So it is expensive, but it does generate leads! Again, you want to maximize your cheaper marketing ROI before moving onto more expensive ones like Google Adwords.

    Direct Mail/Door Hangers

I put direct mail and door hangers in the same category, as one way or another you are paying someone else to walk around and put out flyers. Direct mail and door hangers are one of the most expensive forms of marketing. They should be a last resort after exhausting all of the other marketing strategies above. Again, I will reiterate that this assumes you are paying someone else to put them out. If you want to put them out on your own time, this costs far less as all you have to pay for is printing.

Direct mail costs anywhere from $.25 to $1/plus per piece, and response rates are anywhere from 0 to 3%. If you do use direct mail I would recommend doing it in conjunction with other marketing strategies such as geographically targeted digital advertising or yard signs.

A company we work with, SendJim, can automate postcards and letters for you. Through the integration of a CRM such as Service Autopilot, you can automate this process so, for example, when you complete a job the adjacent neighbors receive your postcard. This is a much cheaper, targeted approach to direct mail.

The reason I spend more on SendJim versus paying my guys to put out door hanger is simple: SendJim is automatic. Sometimes it is challenging to get employees on board for putting these out. You may not always get calls directly from these door hangers or postcards, but it is yet another way that potential clients will see your name.

Conclusion: Marketing Strategies for Small Business

As you can see there are many marketing strategies for small business that work! Depending on the resources you have on hand, you may want to deviate slightly from the order recommended here. But remember it is not just one strategy that works for all small businesses! You must use a combination of strategies so potential customers see your name several times before they react. Good luck!
