Lost an Employee due to WorkPlace Accident, Only Now Realized I dont need them.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:37 PM PST

    So TL;DR

Employee got hurt. Wasnt my company's fault but they are collecting worker's compensation. They have been out for several months now. This employee was supposed to only be out for 2 weeks but after "complications" they've continued to be out. They also got a lawyer to litigate the person responsible for their injuries and it doesnt really concern me other than them being out.

Point is, this employee is highly compensated. Perhaps I gave them too many raises too quickly. All I know is that I thought they were irreplaceable and that without them I would not be able to continue normal operations. That's why I paid them so much.

This employee has always been temperamental. Like I mentioned, I always felt that it was something I needed to accept as they did a good job and I thought no one else could cover their workload. Well, turns out it was definitely not the case.

I've been doing their work without missing a beat. I actually do the work they did in 6 days in just 3. I literally can slow down, do better quality work, and not kill myself without them. I now see that I dont need him. I am surprised that I allowed them to get away with so much as Id been given reports that he wasnt doing something, ttaking to long, and snapping at their superiors.

Well, now I'm pretty adamant about letting them go. Thing is, they got hurt. Theyll come back eventually. My plan is to have my two GMs basically send them home whenever they "snap back" curse or come in with a bad mood. Like I said they act aggressive and this person even was on the brink of cursing me off once. I sat them down and they apologized. But yea, I want my GMs to just send them home with warnings and if it continues Ill fire them.

The issues here and why Im posting is my concern over their injury. Im pretty sure I just cant abruptly fire them and I dont feel the need to. If anything I would just take some hours away from their work week since Ive learned they dont need that much time to do their work. But as to his attitude, my GMs are very against sending anyone home. Its their job to they both seem afraid to. One moreso than the other. Ive been stressing to them daily that I want them to send people home who violate rules and act offensive.

Happy to share that I have my first 2 amazing customers

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:04 AM PST

I do user experience, user interface and development. My clients are some coworkers from a company where I worked 14 years ago. One of them was my boss. I love that they remembered me. I was not looking for clients and it was amazing that they look for me to help them. They are perfect because I can understand them perfectly and they like my work because they don't make too much corrections. They also agree with the budget and time. I am really happy with this opportunity. I am going to be finishing these projects in a month. I have to deliver and amazing work. Before that I have to figure out how to find more clients. Hopefully I could help more people in my network. May be I could share more about what I am working on. Thank you for read my short story :)

Do you use a quote/estimate manager (like Quotient/Proposify etc) or just a spreadsheet?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:29 AM PST

I run a small creative agency which is growing, so I am needing to put together more and more estimates for new jobs. I generally just do them with a spreadsheet, but I hate spreadsheets and I'm terrible at them and I just waste far too much time with them, so I'm looking for something better.

I use Xero for my invoicing and accounting, and it has a quote function, but it's pretty limited, so I'm looking for something else to use with Xero. I discovered a few great options like Quotient, but on top of the money I already spend on Xero they're pretty crazy expensive ($30 per month) especially when all they're doing is quotes, so I'm on the lookout for something great and more affordable.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you all!

Buying P.O. box: UPS or Post office?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:18 PM PST

Hey Everyone, I'm starting my business and still moving around a lot. As a result I was given the advice to get a P.O. box for my business location. I have been given the advice to go with UPS and I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on here.

so usps SMALL box is 108 for 12 months

    ups is much more expensive

I'm not sure if usps takes fedex, dhl packages. it doesnt say on website.

i know ups for sure does.

anyways, how does the mail work? why do they have different size mailbox when you can basically just go to counter to retreive your packages? isn't it wasted money? why not just go with small (cheapest)

Inkjet or Laserjet for bulk Color Flyers/Postcards?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:28 PM PST

On one hand, I'll be printing around 2000 postcards/flyers every month or two, so a laserjet printer would be ideal for the 'cost per page' savings. Right?

On the other hand, these are colored postcards/flyers with images and whatnot, so an inkjet printer would be ideal for that crisp color quality. Right?

I'll mostly print in the size of 8.5x11, and I don't want to feed the cardstock paper one by one manually since I'm printing so many.

I'm completely torn on which to buy. Ideas? Suggestions?

    Video Interviews

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:04 PM PST

    Hey all!

Do you feel as if interviews take a lot of your time? Are you ever annoyed by having to schedule interviews and conduct them? I know I didn't like conducting interviews at my job and I wanted to see what business owners thought.

I'm thinking of building a platform that would allow potential candidates to apply and record a video of their response to a set of questions. You end up with a virtual interview that is recorded and you didn't have to schedule. I wanted to help save time for small business owners when hiring. Would you consider using a platform (not necessarily mine) to have applicants record a interview with you? What would be your biggest concerns if you used a platform like it?

    Thanks for taking a look!

What's one task you've automated that saved you a ton of money/time?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

I feel like it's easy to get stuck in routines and not realize that what you're doing (or paying someone else to do) can be automated. To expand my understanding of business automation, I'm curious to hear about the tasks you were able to automate. How much time/money has it saved you?

    Under bidding jobs

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:12 AM PST

Welp I screwed up and under bid a job. I followed through with my word and did the job for what I quoted and took the loss. Now the issue is the customer is in love with me and wants me to do all kinds of jobs. How do I go about correcting this? Do I just be honest with them and tell them I made a mistake and under bid the job and that future work will be more competitively priced? Or do I just quote higher prices with no explanation? I don't really want to give the customer the idea that I make mistakes but at the same time I cant be working for free or at a loss.

Please help! Web domain name and email domain name trouble

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:22 PM PST

Please let me know if this is the wrong place to post this but I need help!! I'm starting a business and secured the website name for it one week ago through Google but decided against also securing the email domain name at the time. One week later, I actually do want to secure the email domain but see that it's now unavailable. My business name is not anything common and the chances that someone else is using the same business name is close to zero. (My business name is also registered as an LLC in my state).

So... does anyone know why this would be the case? Are there people that snatch these domain names up as they see them to try and sell it to me at a higher cost later? I really want that email domain name but don't know what my options are.

    Starting From Scratch

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:10 PM PST

Let me tell you how 2020 has been for me so far:

I started renting a bar and grill right after I turned 21 in January 2020. When COVID hit in March we were required to only serve carryout food per Governor's orders. Due to the fact we weren't yet an established business, it was impossible to pay for all our expenses and continue to stay open.

I decided to cut my losses in April and bail. I do not regret it and I learned a lot from running the business, we all know failure is a big part of success.

I'm making this post because I've been doing freelance web development & digital ad management for a few years now. Recently my skills have been improving more rapidly, and I found I enjoy it more than I used to.

In conclusion I've decided to build a Marketing, SEO, & Site Design agency. I have two clients so far, small accounts. One is a website redesign, including a SEO & Marketing service package for a towing company. The other is a more recent client for a cell phone store website. I'm looking to run this business as efficiently as possible,(of course) and also provide the highest quality of service for the businesses I work with. I was hoping anybody who has been in either of these 3 industries for a while, knows about the best practices, is new to the industry & still learning, or even just has input on running a business.

I'm very curious as to which tools you guys have found to be the best for these services.

& if there was one thing you know now, that you wish you knew when you first started: what would it be?

I know this is a long post but I want to share my journey with somebody, and plan to help others along the way. I appreciate any input! Thanks

Trying to start creating a beauty/cosmetic product. Anyone tried anything similar?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:10 PM PST

Looking at creating a body scrub. Just wondering if anyone has tried to create similar products? (In Australia btw)

What are the regulations for selling stuff like this?

Do I have to register it anywhere?

Does it legally have to have a list of ingredients? Allergy warnings? etc.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Google seems to have a confusing mix of answers so if someone has hands-on experience with this, that would be amazing!

    Is audit mandatory for company?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:05 AM PST

As we all know, entrepreneurs consider auditing as one of the paramount elements in business. Auditing a company is a lot more significant than we all believe. Auditing is a primary process by which all the financial records of the company are analyzed and reviewed precisely. In the UAE, the free zone companies (FZCO) and the free zone establishments (FZE) are required to take the audits.

To develop and expand the company, audit services in Dubai plays a major part. After auditing, the entrepreneurs can decide about the financial standards and development of the business being carried on. Therefore, it makes investors take proper decisions about investing in the company.

Looking tonetwork with network with entrepreneurs and young entrepreneurs

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:01 PM PST

Hi, I am a 16 year old young entrepreneur with around 2 years of experience in online business having scaled a business to over £500/day and having had a business mindset all my life really and an ambition to do better and work hard. I am now looking to network and make connections with likeminded individuals (young or old) where we can both use our individual areas of expertise and use each other's skills whenever needed to boost our businesses and do a great job where we may otherwise be clueless.

I have been doing business for a few years now mainly in e-commerce in marketing so am skilled in all that brings including:

Store creation and web design (Wordpress) Dropshipping Facebook ads Photo editing Everything else that having online businesses and having a lot of experience in marketing, scaling one brand to £10k/month brings

I am now looking for new friends who think the same way as I do and am hungry to build massive businesses. Wether that be from having the same skills as me or being from a totally different background..

Shoot me a message and we can get talking and exchange our contact details (I'm not really used to Reddit)

How do I get sales? I have views and clicks but no sales

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

I have enough views. When I had two people advertise my website and did seo on it as well as me submitting ads on different sites, my views jumped from probably 85 views in the last 20 days, to 500 views and 464 clicks in the last few days. Problem is I am not getting sales. I put a faq, showed what service that they are getting, and a review on my photos. What else should I do? Is my target right? How do I narrow the tags down? I'm a psychic reader and dream interperter and I have a vegan nutrient guide

    Any tips of cold leads?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:01 PM PST

I started gathering data since the legalization of cannabis in Quebec for all of the government outlets. That project was made mostly out of fun and gave a way for clients (as well as staff, which made me smile) to keep track of their current stocks in store.

A Licensed Producer approached me to buy these metrics to evaluate which product they should consider investing in. I have reached a monthly pricing model agreement with a hard 1 year commitment with them.

From this I started researching other LPs and reached out to them, via linked in (to marketing /sales directors) to see if they would be interested but havn't heard back yet.

This made me wonder if my reaching out strategy was optimal. If anyone has insight I woukd greatly appreciate it!

    How should I pay myself?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:05 AM PST

I'm starting a small business. Its an LLC if that helps. I am trying to figure out how I should tell the IRS how much I pay myself to get the optimal amount to me and to my business and pay minimum taxes from each. I wasn't even planning on paying myself the first few months- 1yr. Is there a way around paying an absolute ridiculous payroll tax?

Looking/asking for advice, ideas and tips on how to protect our growing business and disprove false customer complaints about product quality, incomplete orders, etc.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 04:42 PM PST

Firstly, I apologise if my post doesn't fit here but I have been doing hours of research in the past few days and found nothing specific to my situation, so am now turning to Reddit for help.(If anyone can direct me to a more appropriate community or website after reading this, that would be highly appreciated). Secondly, I will try to shorten this post to the best of my abilities and I thank, in advance, everyone who will take their time to read through the end. I work at a company that manufactures high quality children's transportation toys, ranging from simple push strollers to scooters. Customers can start with a basic package and then choose between a wide arrange of add ons aswell as purchasing a complete set. In any case, we provide all the necessary parts, include a detailed manual, a 24h customer support contact and it is up to the customer to assemble the product themselves. I'm guite new to this company but it has recently come to my attention that we have no system developed to protect ourselves from false customer complaints, ranging from product quality to missing parts and the list qoes on. I'll give an example: each box of add ons or complete sets is assembled on a production line with no fewer than 5 people, each of whom double checks for missing or broken parts (in case the person before them missed something) and a person at the end, who's sole responsibility is to check that the box is complete and has been assembled correctly, after which it is sealed with a company logo sticker. This means each box goes through at least 6 pairs of highly trained, attentive eyes. I can't claim mistakes don't happen but they are kept to an absolute minimum. A few days ago we received a customer complaint, claiming that a set of add ons was missing 2 major components (which just happen to be the most expensive ones). Both components are roughly the size of a dinner plate, meaning the chances of 6 experienced workers forgetting to include them is pretty much zero. But since its our word against the clients, of course we apologised and sent them the "missing parts" on our cost. Example number 2 (and this is the one that struck a nerve with me the most): one of the (most expensive) add ons we offer is a set that includes a motor, battery, charger, throttle and a number of other parts. Assembling a motor is a job that requires absolute precision, is costly and is the most time consuming job at our production. Myself and another colleague are the only two who have been specifically trained to handle this item. In comes a customer who has now complained for the third time that their motor arrived incomplete. The first time it was supposedly missing 2 outlets, the second time they said it came without the on/off button. Now I'm not claiming that I'm perfect and never make mistakes but it is pretty much impossible forgetting to include these outlets because they connect to everything else inside the motor. Same goes for the on/off button. We did ask for a photo of the motor as proof, but to be honest anyone who knows how to use a drilling machine can just take out the 8 screws that hold together the motors outer shell, remove the 2 outlets and thats it. Again, the customers word against ours so they have now received already the third motor(costing us around 200eur each plus shipping). So finally here are my questions: what options do we have, in what ways can we protect ourselves from these kind of situations? How do we obtain proof that a certain set box is complete, before it is shipped to a customer to prevent these kind of false claims? One idea was weighing each set box(if complete they should all weigh the same, but in that case a customer can always say the weight was incorrect)another was asking the customer to post back the entire set box in its original form, so it can be assessed, fixed and shipped back with no extra costs to the customer. I believe to the most part, if the customer is lying, they will not take things further in that case. Im asking for ideas, advice, basically anything that could help a business protect itself from false customer accusations. I thank you for taking the time to read this long post and appreciate every single reply.

How to figure out who gets what percentage of the profit?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:27 PM PST

Me and my sister have recently launched an etsy with different types of art and jewelry. We are currently doing 60/40 her. She makes the product, advertises on social media and a lot of the actual design. I do mostly just the etsy website listings, technical things and shipping. She really seems to be on edge about we even having a 40% cut because she feels like I don't do an incredible amount. What is the best way to negotiate this? Are there ways that are better to split the money instead of the split? For example she always gets $2 then a 60/40 split? Each product is from $4 to $10.

Free websites for customers to leave reviews?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

I do dog boarding in my free time because I really enjoy it. I usually post my ads on kijiji since it's specific to Canadians and a lot of people look for private services there. I also have an instagram that I link there to show posts me taking care of the dogs. People can't leave reviews on kijiji and instagram too, so is there a website where my customers could leave reviews that won't cost me anything?
