I hit a parked car, not sure if I did the right thing? Insurance

I hit a parked car, not sure if I did the right thing?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:59 PM PST

This morning as I was pulling out of my parking spot in my apartment, I gently hit a parked car's front fender with my back fender. The damage on their car (a 2015ish minivan) was not too bad, but definitely noticeable— some small horizontal scrapes over the space of about a foot and a very tiny quarter sized dent on their front bumper. I left a note apologizing and giving them my insurance provider + policy number and my first name and phone number. I photographed the damage to their car and photo'd their license plate. It is evening now, and so far the car owner has not tried contacting me.

Here's where I'm not sure if I did the right thing: Since the damage to their car is somewhat mild and cosmetic, on the off chance they choose not to pursue compensation from my insurer, I held off on proactively filing a claim with my insurer. Are there any negative repercussions of not filing a claim immediately if the car's owner does choose to reach out to my insurer?

    Edit: location Ohio

I was driving on the highway and a constructions truck flew off and hit my car. Front bumper and under carriage damaged pretty bad

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 12:17 AM PST

I have all state full coverage (if that helps with any tips) Cone was those big ones not the small ones. I think it was the 36" size Location: California County: Orange County City: Santa Ana Freeway: I-5 South

So I was driving down the free way when a construction truck's cone flew out and hit my car. I had to pull over as my bumper and under carriage were dragging. The construction truck took off. How should I move on to filing my claim?

I don't know if anything else was damaged

Do I HAVE to add my little brother to car insurance

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

My brother (16) has his learners permit and will soon be getting his license. I feel like if I add him my rates will increase drastically. Is this true? Would it be ok to not add him? would my insurance still cover everything if he happens to get into an accident?

Side question: my mom cannot obtain a drivers license due to immigration status at the moment. what would happen if she were to be in an accident while driving my car? would it be covered?

    Dentist’s charge and claim question

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:08 PM PST

Do dentist normally submit a huge claim to insurance company?

My dentist( in-network) has quoted me ~600 to get two wisdom teeth out (D7230 -tooth 32 and D7240 - tooth 1) with local anesthesia and that it would be covered by my insurance - no out of pocket cost for me. However, they have submitted a $3000 claim for the two teeth that were extracted. The total amount the insurance company allowed was $2211.

Is that typical for dentists to submit claims so they can take the maximum amount allowed by the insurance company for the procedure?

If so, wouldn't that lower my annual cap ($2200) and decrease the available benefit for the rest of the year? - asking this because I still have to get the other two wisdom teeth out next year and would still want the plan to pay for the cleanings.

Or are they submitting this huge claim since it's the end of the year and they want to use up my annual cap?

Thanks in advance! New to the US healthcare/ dental insurance system. (NYC)

    Captive reinsurance

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:31 PM PST

Hey all! I'm currently working on a school project and I need some help....The project is supposed to be pretty basic but I'm having a hard time understanding. So I am the captive manager and I am working with a Company to sell them a reinsurance captive for their property insurance. My task is to (i) capitalize or fund the surplus based on Solvency 2 and (ii) determine the funding of the surplus and the property premium for the captive. The company has a TiV of $11.5b and a past claims of $29 million with over 800 locations worldwide. Any help is appreciated!

Pro-5 contents claim: Is a cash settlement negotiable with the insurer in lieu of remediation?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:27 PM PST

We had a fire in our home which exposed a significant amount of asbestos and other contamination to the entire home and contents. I received an estimate from the Pro-5 remediation inspection in the many 10s of thousands of dollars for the contents alone. I believe the contents themselves could be replaced for half or less.

Is this type of claim in the purview of our homeowners insurer to negotiate for a cash settlement instead of the massive cost involved with inspecting, assessing, warehousing and remediating? It seems they could easily save 50% or more by making me an offer, but I'm not certain if California law requires the full pro-5 remediation process on all the contents.

    Purchasing a car

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:18 PM PST

Hey guys, so I currently have full coverage on my current vehicle, I'm planning on buying a used one in the coming days. If I have full coverage insurance on a separate vehicle will the dealership (a big name one) still allow me to purchase the car without actually registering that specific vehicle. Is there a grace period of some sort? This is in Georgia btw. Thanks!

Temporarily moving to a different state and will be using my car there. Is it necessary to adjust my auto insurance plan?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:22 PM PST

So I currently live in Chicago, but will be moving to Los Angeles temporarily/on a short term basis within the next few weeks. Will be driving over to get there and using my car regularly. I'll likely only be in LA for 2-3 months max.

I'm planning on leasing a short term apartment while I'm in LA, but during this time will still retain my current residence/address in Chicago.

Since I'm still going to have my residence in Chicago while I'm out in LA, is it even necessary to adjust my auto insurance plan? I just want to make sure I'm covered, and there's no issues or confusion if an accident occurs while I'm out there.

I have State Farm insurance, if that's necessary info.

    Getting insurance every other

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:53 PM PST

My employer offers vision insurance. The insurance only covers the cost of glasses/contacts every other year. What prevents someone from just enrolling every other year? Also, what prevents people from enrolling in insurance when they need to buy glasses? For example, when my glasses are getting old, I purposely enroll in a vision plan.

    Maryland, USA.

EDIT: Was told to include location.

Will my health insurance cover the cost of therapy at all?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:41 PM PST

Just some background, I'm 20 and under my mom's insurance. We have BlueCross BlueShield of IL (HMO). I've been having a really hard time lately with things going on in my life, so I think would benefit from therapy. I've never spoken to my mom about this, so I wanted to know if anyone had any idea how much therapy sessions might cost before I bring it up to her.

    Multi-vehicle discounts...WTF?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:45 PM PST

Why is it in an insurance company's interest to give people a discount for putting more cars on the road?

It's time to renew my auto insurance, and my premiums are going up 68% because we went from a two-car household to a single car. This makes no logical sense to me.

Edit for the bot: I'm in Whatcom County, Washington.

Can someone help explain why my auto insurance went up $60 a month from last year?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:13 PM PST

    I live in Tennessee

I contacted my insurance and I didn't really understand their reasoning. I got my own insurance back in March of 2019 when I leased a new car and I was 24 at the. The car is a sports car and I have a 20 year old beater thar is completely paid off. I have full coverage and gap insurance on the lease and liability on the beater. My payments were $160 a month.

In October I bought a house. The cost of the house is roughly 3 times my salary and I had 10% down. My homeowners insurance is through the same company as my auto and the homeowners is wrapped into my escrow. Fast forward to March of 2020 and I go to renew my auto insurance and it jumped up to $220.

I asked for an explanation from the underwriter and what they said that my liability is higher now that I have a mortgage. I'll also add that I've never been in an accident and I've never had a speeding ticket plus I turned 25 at the start of 2020.

Can anyone help provide some insight? I can try to provide more information as necessary

Recently lost Heath insurance due to turning 26. About 4 days later I had to go to the ER to get my appendix removed. Now I am stuck with the bill. Need help.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:19 PM PST

My situation is I was on my parents healthcare plan but after I turned 26 the coverage ended. Couple days later I had to get my appendix removed before it burst. I need help deciding what to do.

I am a Massachusetts resident and had the surgery in Maine because I was visiting. I am planning to move to Georgia in 2 weeks and do not know what state to apply for health insurance. The plan I had before was Health New England.

I do not know what to do. Do I use Cobra? Do I apply for insurance through the healthcare website. If so for what state do I apply for Massachusetts or Georgia? If I apply through the marketplace is the coverage even retroactive? Thanks

    T-boned accident fault?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:06 AM PST

    Throw away

    Massachusetts.

Yesterday I was in a T-bone accident. I'm having so much anxiety about the whole thing and wondering who would be at fault.

I was driving straight, it was a 4 lane street (2 each side) and I was in the left lane. Saw a woman stopped across the right lane with cars stopped for her, attempting to pull out of a parking lot and go left. I slowed for "safety" (🙄), but did not stop because she was at a full stop.

Kept going forward but she started pulling out in front of me to turn left so I swerved to the left to avoid her but she gassed her jeep right into my car. Hit me hard and spun me across the on-coming traffic side. No one is hurt thankfully.

My car is totalled, damage to rear passenger door and tire. Her damage is to the front driver's side bumper and that's it.

Who would be at fault here?

    Insurance is being a pain

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 04:41 PM PST

    X-posted in r/legal advice

About a month ago I ran out of gas on the highway. I ended up having to be towed to the nearest gas station by DOT incident management truck to fill up my car since it was a diesel. I drove to work after that with no problems. However, after I got off from work I learned that the tow caused the oil pan to crack and drain out all of my oil. But I didn't realize this until I was driving home at about 11pm. I was driving down the street from work when I realized something was wrong. So I turned around and parked my car at work until I could figure it out. The total distance was a mile.

The next day I call the insurance and they were able to set up a tow to a shop and a rental car to use in the mean time. The inspection showed it was the tow that day that caused the crack in the oil pan. They had found a couple of other parts that were broken as well because of the tow. The auto adjustor approved it the repair.

My car was suppose to be fixed on Thursday. But the adjustor called to tell me that the engine had seized and that they would not be covering the cost of that repair. He said that the initial inspection couldn't have shown the engine was seized.

I called the shop to discuss options and they told me it was really shady that the insurance decided not to cover this. Especially because my engine wouldn't have seized if it wasn't for the crack in the oil pan. The cost of a new engine with the labor would be about $3,700 plus the $500 deductible for the initial repairs.

I know insurance companies are notorious for not wanting to pay out. I called the adjustor to give him an earful and raise hell. But he hasn't answered the last few days. I left a message Friday afternoon and yesterday. Aside from talking to him and his boss, I'm not quite sure what to do. A family member suggested I talk to a lawyer and see if there's any legal avenues available.

But, how can I make my insurance cover this?

A driver ran a red light and hit me while driving

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:39 AM PST

Couple weeks ago, I was leaving Starbucks after grocery shopping when a man ran a red light and hit me (I had the green light). Thankfully I was okay and suffered whipped lash but my car bumper was T-bone while the other vehicle had a small scratch. The man refused to exchange info until a cop showed up. Sadly the cop did but turns out, he knew the other party and therefore refuse to fault him. So he put the blame on both of us because the man was blaming me and there were not witnesses or cameras. I took it to social media to ask anyone who witnessed it (we were in a busy street and nobody stopped) to please contact me. I finally found a witness and was able to get a testimony. At first the officer in the report refused to and blamed me and made false accusations saying there was a camera behind me. I was so upset that I called the police department and demanded to speak to a Sgt. A Sgt contacted me and looked over the report. He demanded his officer to take the witnesses statement and declared the other party at fault. I'm a college student and I pay out of pocket for my bachelors education. I've been out of school (and zoom) due to the pain from whiplash. I didn't go to the ER because the paramedic checked me and said I was fine and would be in pain for the next 2wks. I'm still in pain since the man was speeding.

The other party and the cop gave me hell and stressed the shit out of me. I cried for 2wks because of the pain and wasn't able to prove the other party was at fault. The cop definitely protected the other man. I don't have my car since the insurance has it in the mean time and I was told the other insurance has to pay for my rental. My question is, what should I expect next? I'm currently not working in the mean time because of the crazy schedule of my school. Not only that, I'm suppose to be start applying for my internship.

How to start a car insurance company?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:17 PM PST

I'm curious what it would take to start a car insurance company from scratch. How much money would you need to start? How many policyholders do you need to adequately pool the funds? How difficult is it to get accreditation and whatnot? As a personal injury lawyer on the claims side, I've often wondered what it would take to start a car insurance company that handles claims the way I'd like to see them handled.

    Auto insurance help please!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:13 PM PST

I have a 2004 grand am my sister backed into my parked car on a hill. I had emergency brake on. So not sure if it damaged that. She smashed headlight and the hood is pushed up but still secure and the frame was pushed into door, it still opens but hits frame when opening. I have a couple of questions before or if I call auto insurance. First I bought the car for 1000 three years ago it has 130 k miles and has been super reliable so I'm absolutely positive insurance will total it out due to the amount of damage. So I was thinking of not making a claim as I don't want to lose my car. Also i have full coverage and I'm in state of Michigan. If I call them and decide not to make a claim will my insurance still go up? Does insurance go up if the accident is in a driveway and my car is parked and I make claim? If they do total it I assume they take car? Would they offer to sell it back for less than what they total it for? Is there any way I can make claim just for parts and do it myself? my insurance is progressive if that matters and this would be my third accident in 5 years with this company. I've made one claim where it was my fault on a one car accident that they totaled out. on second car that was totaled the other driver was deemed 100 percent at fault and I had PLPD at time so i didn't make claim with my insurance company but due to a law in Michigan I received 1000 dollars through their insurance company. Also can you negotiate the amount if it's totaled out and if so what talking points would you suggest I bring up? Any other advice I may not have thought of is gladly appreciated as I'm trying to determine the best course of action and y'all are the experts! Thank you so much for reading and hopefully responding!

    Car seat replacement

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

So unfortunately my daughter and I were in two accidents in 3months. This second accident was a rear ender by two cars and we tapped the person in front of us. Thankfully we had stopped with a good distance in between us or they would have had more damage as we were hit pretty hard.

Our insurance agent said we needed to get a new car seat immediately. So we went last night to 4 different stores and none had anything near our original one (it was 5 years old) the same brand had one that was $100 more expensive but then we found another one that happened to be on sale made by another brand and with the sale it made it to be $9 more than our original one. I found the original one on Walmart's website but it says out of stock for online and in store. Will they accept the costs of this one sense we got it for about the same amount? Honestly I don't care even if they don't because it's a fantastic car seat. It's just our agent is out of the office until Tuesday and I wanted to know what happens when you can't find same or like car seats.

National Car Rental charged me $500 deductible even though I made a claim on my credit card

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:29 AM PST

I had a rental car from National and hit the front bumper from the bottom on a Forest Service road, i.e. my fault and no one/nothing else damaged. I did not pay for the company's damage waiver and am instead relying on credit card damage waiver. The car was rented on MasterCard credit card with their loss damage waiver, so I am making a claim to MasterCard to cover the damage. However, in the meanwhile, National charged me $500 'Deductible'. When I asked them, they said the insurance would pay it out to me.

Now it has been over 3 months, and National still did not send me any damage report. I followed up, and they said they are still processing it. So I wanted to ask: 1. Do I have any recourse here to get my $500 back from National? It seems that 3 months is a really long time. 2. Is the credit card insurance actually going to pay out the $500? or should I do something different to recover the $500?

Location: Washington state, USA Edit: Clarified I am relying on credit card damage waiver

[GA, USAA] Water Damage Claim - Want to make sure I'm not missing anything / Does condo insurance differ in coverage from standard homeowners?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:14 AM PST

TL;DR - Does condo insurance differ a ton from homeowners? I was told that I'd be assigned a condo adjuster. Am I missing any steps in this process and is there anything I should be aware of? This is my first ever insurance claim - lots of anxiety about this process and what may or may not be covered.

    Hey all,

Just bought our first condo not long ago and have it insured through USAA. We have a sprinkler head right above our stove that went off yesterday. There was never a fire, any smoke, or any fire damage. It was one of the older-style all metal nozzles, not the ones with fluid in a vial. We have most/all of our burners going and our oven was on. We were sautéing some food and never had a crazy amount of flame, just the standard flame you'd kind of expect with sautéing some food. I told the insurance this during the claim.

It ran for a few minutes (not sure of how long, but it felt like an eternity while I ran to the building water shut-off... Probably less than 2-3 minutes before we got a bucket under it and turned off water... Maybe less.) We have neighbors below us who had water running into their kitchen as well. We immediately used every towel we own to absorb any water we found. There was a decent amount but we had everything but the surrounding carpet dry within 30 minutes. Water damage was just the kitchen, with some water reaching the carpet immediately outside the kitchen.

Water definitely fried our microwave and got a lot of our cabinets wet. Timeline of events:

    • 8PM - Sprinkler went off. Promptly turned water off, called fire department to check system and replace sprinkler head.

    • 8:30PM - Called USAA to let them know what happened. Told them our neighbor was involved as they had water running through a few small areas in their kitchen. They told me to get moving on mitigation if possible.

    • 9:00PM - Called a water mitigation service. Industrial blowers and dehumidifiers set up in kitchen by 10pm. They have been running since. They told us we might have to replace all our cabinets, anything water touched in general.

I scheduled an appointment with a sprinkler inspection service to ensure the new head put in by the FD is okay with no leaks. They're coming out this week.

Am I missing any steps in this process and is there anything I should be aware of in this process?

We do have a condo homeowners policy through USAA. Our deductible for covered parils is $370. Our coverage is as follows:

    Type Limit
    Dwelling - Building Items $100,000
    Personal Belongings(Includes Replacement Cost) $40,000
    Loss of Use $15,000
Personal Liability - Each Occurrence $300,000
    Medical Payments to Others $5,000

Traveler's Insurance - trustworthy? (Switching from Geico)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:20 AM PST

Pretty straightforward question here. I currently have Geico, I'm looking around for something a bit cheaper, since Geico is charging me about $250/mo. Called a few places, and Traveler's is the only one that can offer any kind of reduced rate (~$150/mo).

I've never heard of Traveler's before now, don't know anything about them, good or bad. Are they a reputable company? Saw one post somewhere where someone said they ran your credit any time you call, since they're through a broker, but I have no idea and that makes no sense to me.

Any input would be appreciated. TIA!

Unique Auto Insurance situation - low Nada value - not quite classic - '97 Suburban

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:30 AM PST

Michigan - I'm trying to find a provider to go through to get an agreed value for my 97 Suburban I bought. This thing in in mint show condition, my insurance said the value was $3,500, but it is impossible to buy one in this condition for double that price. It's value is around ~$12,000. Classic car insurer Hagerty said it is a few years out before it can be considered a classic, and that I would be putting too many miles on it (~7k / year).

I'm looking for a recommendation for insurers that do agreed value, I've called around and can't find anyone who wants to do it.

Help! Car insurance with no home address / changing home address?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:03 AM PST

I will be moving to a different state every 2 weeks for the foreseeable future.

Insurance companies have told me "We can insure your car based on the address where the car will be parked at least 51% of the time."

While I do have a permanent "home" address, the car will almost never be parked there. Since I don't have an address where it will be parked regularly, is there a type of car insurance I can get that will cover this situation?

    Thanks
