My obligatory final payment post! Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:55 AM PST I graduated in December of 2018 with $30,000 in principal debt. I got a degree in civil engineering and was able to get a job June 2018 and began working. Every piece of spare change I had went towards my debt. Tbh the feeling still hasn't hit yet, but as of now I am officially debt free! [link] [comments] |
Nelnet loans due in February 2021...why? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 04:32 PM PST So my nelnet loan payments were suspended due to cares act and it's my understanding the payments were suspended through December 2020, but iv just checked and now it says my next due payment is in February 2021. Anyone know why? I'm not complaining just don't want any last minute surprises in December or January. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2020 02:31 AM PST I'm sorry if this is a very stupid question, long time lurker. Ever since the BD applications and processing moved to the new site, I can't find my application. It says it's connected to my studentaid account, or it should be, but when I try to view my applications, nothing comes up, I'm at a loss. I applied earlier this year, but was thinking about it post-election today. Does this mean it was denied and I just never got an email notification about it? Should I reapply in January, when the new administration takes over? Unsure what I should do to get a fair shake at this now that Devos is on her way out. Thank you for any and all help and as always thank you to Betsy for always fighting for us here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST Paid my own way through college thus far with savings and scholarship. I have one semester of classes left which is around $4500 out of pocket. I have not taken out any loans this far. With Biden election and campaign promises of loan forgiveness would it be better to take out a loan for this last semester in hopes of a tuition forgiveness or hat pay it myself and get it over with? I am not independent from my parents but am paying my own way so I'm not sure if I dependency factors into the equation. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Due to coronavirus my would-be guarantor is unemployed. Can I still apply for private student loans? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:59 PM PST I am planning to go to a school where I need to get private student loans. I had a guarantor set up, but because of the coronavirus his Japanese company went back to Japan and laid off all the American engineers. He still has not found a job, and I'm not sure if he can apply while only receiving unemployment. I was looking at sallie mae and Ascent. I saw ascent only requires you to make 25k a year, and he would have made that threshold in the beginning of the year, but I believe it asks him for current paychecks? Please advise. Discover loans- new grad- HELP I’m scared :/ Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST I have discover loans of about $116k and I'm stuck. I am a new grad nurse and just got a job as a covid tester. I have some money saved up to pay towards my loans but I don't know for how long. ANY ADVICE on how to go about dealing with my loans I'm so lost and scared. My grace period ends the end of November when I will have to start paying. Please please help or any advice I will be so grateful for. I'm terrified about this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:30 AM PST I'm going to PSU and need to get private student loans to sign up for classes. I owe around 9000 dollars. I went to the summer semester to prove to the college I can succeed, so I had to use my limit of federal loans to pay for that time, so I need private loans for this semester and the next. I don't know what to do. Without college I will be homeless. I have a really high GPA (3.57 right now, should be 3.6 sometime this week after my midterm revision gets graded). What can I do to avoid losing everything? I had to move away from my parents and work my ass off to get into college. I'll lose everything. Please help me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:53 AM PST Hey everyone! I could really use some financial advice. I have a Discover Student Loan and Federal Loans that total well over $80,000. The number will of course continue to rise due to accruing interest, especially my Federal loans since I've been on an IDR plan but unable to pay anything since 2014. I've also recently been placed on an economic hardship program for Discover. Given my degree choice (BFA), job skills (service industry making minimum wage and living paycheck to paycheck), and cost of living (currently in NYC but can't afford to buy a vehicle so it limits my options to city living only) I have to be realistic with the realization that I will not be able to pay these loans back in my lifetime. I'm curious to hear from folks who have let their private loans go into delinquent status. I know of a few people who've let their Federal Loans lapse but I have yet to talk to anyone with private loans. What was that like for you? I know it's not ideal, especially since I have a co-signer on the loans (he's also facing economic hardship and cannot cover the costs). Discover would not allow me to speak to anyone from the deliquency department to find out any specific information, so I thought I'd turn to you all! Of course, ideally I wouldn't allow my accounts to hit delinquency status, but the only way I'd be able to manage paying my loans back in a timely manner is to give up some of the more expensive costs. For me, that means giving up a place to live. I can't live with my parents and I don't want to impose on friends or their parents since I'd have to live with them for quite some time to pay these back so I'm curious to hear if anyone has had experience or knows of anyone who has worked while homeless? Aside from my city living, I live very modestly and have cut out any erroneous spending (I don't pay for streaming services, memberships of any kind, no more ordering food, etc), and I have nothing of value to sell. Truly the only thing I know to cut out is living in a home. Thank you all very much for your help and advice! **Thank you to everyone who reached out. I was feeling hopeless and having quite the meltdown when I wrote this haha. You've helped me feel a lot better. The financial world can feel so overwhelming to me and beat me down but this has been the best advice I've received. Thank you 🧡 [link] [comments] |
Can you change to a Direct Consolidation Loan, if your Parent Plus loan has a co-signer? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:09 PM PST Do you need to involve the cosigner of a parent plus loan, if you want to move to a Direct Consolidation Loan? My wife holds a Parent Plus loan, and her Father Co-Signed for the loan a few years ago. [link] [comments] |
Can you qualify for a pell grant after a bachelor’s? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:23 AM PST My friend has a complicated history in terms of education. She has a bachelor's degree, but that school closed a few years ago. She recently applied to a community college to take some courses as a non-degree seeker. She found out she is receiving a pell grant. I thought that you couldnt receive a pell grant after a bachelor's. Is it because there is no record of it since her degree awarding school does not operate anymore? (No longer listed in nationalclearinghouse) [link] [comments] |
401k contributions while paying off loans? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:04 AM PST Anyone here making 401k contributions while paying off loans? What is your thought process on that? Many people I know are just prioritizing the loans and not making any 401k contributions. But my projected payback time is 5-7. That scares me because I'm a 30 year old female and expect to have kids in the next few years. I can't imagine not saving anything, whether cash or retirement for 5-7 years. [link] [comments] |
Is the Income Driven Payment plan the only thing available to poorer students? Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:54 AM PST I thought I saw some kind of plan for Students to maybe extended or delay the payment needed after the forebearance in December. Is the Income Driven Plan the only thing that's available? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:02 AM PST I graduated grad school in December 2019, but due to covid and the economic downturn, I couldn't land a job until last month, but this is a travel contract job lasting 6 months. About my loan: $45k of federal loans. I met my goal of no private loans and no gradplus loans. About my pay: I now make $5,168 per month at the minimum after taxes for working 36 hours per week. If I go overtime, it becomes $50 an hour after tax. About my expenses: My rent is $700 per month, utilities included. Phone bill is $65/month. Car insurance is $55/month. Not sure about groceries, but I spent about $100 last month. Gas is probably the biggest expense as I have a 40 minute commute, 30 miles one way, and I like to go home some weekends (2.5 hrs away - 160 miles one way). Gas is about $1.80 around here. Food is about $7/day, 5 days per week. I know I should cut this down, but I'm already skipping meals from not having time to eat lunch at work. So based on this information, how much should I put down on loans each month to rid of these loans in 2-3 years? How much should I put down before Dec 31st? [link] [comments] |
