Title. The idea is to give her 20% share vs our 40% and 40%, and then raise the rates to compensate. There's definitely a place for her in terms of sharing the workload, and I do feel that we could get away with the rate increase. However, I'm wondering if it's a smart decision to sacrifice 10% of my ownership, which I think has more scalable potential than the increased revenue brought by increased rates. My partner doesn't lose out on much because even though some of the money is going to her instead of directly to him, they're married and essentially share income.

I'm a first-time business owner, so I'm hoping to get some guidance from those with more experience!

Thinking of forming an Single Member LLC and have a few specific questions

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:00 AM PST

I live in Virginia and currently have a sole proprietorship (freelance IT consulting - mostly database design/automation & dashboard development). I've been doing this for a few years but as my income has grown I am thinking it's time to creating a single member LLC. I've been reading a ton of resources but am left with a few questions I can't quite find the answer to, so hoping to get some opinions!

    1. I work from home... so if I use the same computer, same desk, same chair, etc. for personal & business use, does this introduce risk to the corporate veil? Do I need to somehow classify these things as personal assets vs business assets? Am I overthinking this?
    2. Assuming my clients pay their invoices to the LLC Business Checking account, how do I get the money 'out' of the business checking account? Is it literally as simple as just transferring to my personal bank account whenever I want, or is something more formal required? Again, it's just me in the LLC so it would be a disregarded entity at tax time... just can't quite see how this picture comes together.
    3. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to forming the LLC in December 2020 vs waiting until January 2021?
    4. If I have the single member LLC and my business has essentially 0 assets (because I would be regularly moving money OUT of the business into my personal accounts), is there really a need for professional liability insurance? If someone sued my LLC it would theoretically have almost no assets, so what would the professional liability insurance even be covering?
    5. Is there really a need to pay for a registered agent service? I don't really care about getting junk mail, and it seems even with an RA my information is still fairly publicly exposed since my principal office address is my home anyway.

I Wanna Start A Business, But I Have Some Questions.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:36 PM PST

Hi! For the past year I've really been thinking about starting a clothing line once I get the funds to do so, but have some questions!

    1. What website is the best for small businesses?

    2. How can I make shipping affordable for customers, how do you ship your items?

    3. Where do you get your shipping supplies from? (Polymailers, Stickers, Flyers, Business Cards)

    4. How much money did you initially have when starting your business?

    5. Do you need any certificate's/licenses to own a business?

    Thanks!

To grow or not to grow, that is the question.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:52 AM PST

I own a small specialty construction company that builds post and beam barns. I started the business in 2011 and to say it's been a slow go is an understatement.

I'm at a point now where I am well known and the work inquiries keep coming in. 2020 has been my best year ever!

I'm coming to the point where I need to make a decision as to whether to double the business or not. I hate to put people off for 6 months or more.

I'm concerned about the costs, keeping more people busy full time and the political climate. I'm concerned Mr. President elect will squash the economy in ways the virus has not.

I don't need advice per se, but I'm interested in hearing the stories of others who have found themselves in a similar situation.

    Cheers!

Crafts including mini alcohol bottles.. licensing?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:58 AM PST

Starting my own business selling crafts that I make and I'm wondering about those involving mini alcohol bottles. (Google search mini alcohol boquets for an example).

I'm assuming if I purchased the mini bottles and then sold it to someone, I would need a liquor license.

What if the customer provided the alcohol and I just put it together and sold the non-alcoholic parts? Would I still need a liquor license for that?

Or would I need to just sell them the basket or whatever and instruct them as to where to add the alcohol?

For a C-Corp incorporated in DE but with no physical presence other than registered agent, is state corporate tax applied at DE?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:00 PM PST

The company has no business license in DE, but was incorporated there. The owner lives in a different state (PA) and likely needs a business license in PA. Would the corporate income be taxed at DE rate or PA?

How do I start and grow a product/brand?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:59 AM PST

I have an idea for a product that some may consider silly but I do believe there is a market for, but frankly I have no idea how to make it and even if I did I wouldn't know how to get it produced and sold. The product I have in mind is umm.... (Warning kind of NSFW) Well it's a sort of strap-on Fleshlight hybrid- kind of. For men with small penises or erectile dysfunction who still want to get pleasure out of sex with their partners and want them to feel good too. Would come in different sizes colors etc could also negate the need for a condom (still better safe than sorry though) and can have holes at the top too for, well, you know.. I just have no idea where to start.

    Technical Partner

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:56 PM PST

I want to start a company/website which services relieas heavily on tech. At first, I have a partner for that. The problem is, he pulled out when I gave the initial plans after a few weeks and told me that he would rejoin maybe next year.

Questions: 1) Is he going to steal the idea since he has the general idea for the business? 2) should I start looking for a new tech partner already? 3) in case he ends up making a website simillar to my idea, is there anything for me to do?

    Business Structure Help Appreciated

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 05:15 PM PST

Hello and thank you in advance! I also understand I will probably need to talk to a lawyer or an accountant still, but I am at a point where I don't even know what to talk about with them. I work at an accounting firm and they allowed me to have a passive ownership interest in a tax prep LLC that I started prior to working at the firm. However, I must report withdrawals or show how it goes into my tax return. I don't really have to draw money from this tax prep business while I am working and I don't want to constantly update my employer whenever I do.

So, would it be possible to convert the LLC into a structure where taxes are just paid at the business level and don't flow through to my finances? If so, what would be your advice? I have heard of some using a silent trust to do so?

    Again, thank you!

Is there any downside to obtaining a business license you don’t need, just as a compliance precaution?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 05:09 PM PST

    Aside from the application fees.

I am worried I might be required to get one but am not sure, is there any downside to just getting one even if I don't need it?

Edit: to clarify, I mean additional business licenses.. such as one in DE state where a company is incorporated and also in another state where an asset is.

HELP - domain, g suite and website. How are they connected?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 10:28 PM PST

Im sorry if this is a dumb question....I'm not sure why I need to do these things and how they all connect. Can anyone explain how the domain works and why I need it to set up a professional email (aka an email without @gmail) and once I have g suite with my desired email what is the next step for most of you? I originally only wanted to create a professional email because I plan to work mostly out of Instagram but I'm so confused as to why I needed to buy a domain to set up a professional. I know this sounds like a silly question but I would really appreciate it if anyone could explain how all these things are connected... i feel like an idiot buying and setting things up that i don't understand. Thank you so much.

I'm attracting customers to my business...but on the wrong platform

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 02:41 PM PST

TLDR: I'm doing business on Reddit, but really struggling when I try to switch platform and formalise my business on a proper sales site.

    ---

I've been running a solo small business, doing image editing/photoshopping for people. Most of my business actually comes from Reddit itself, because I do free or paid jobs on request boards and it showcases my skills and is kind of like a form of advertising.

However, Reddit deals can be kind of sketchy. First, there's no guarantee people will actually pay for the work you do for them, even if they agree to all the terms originally and you had a deal. This can be very frustrating for longer jobs which required hours of effort or when a customer just bails on the order or, even worse, tries to pull a fast one on you.

I also feel like my work is consistently undervalued because I can't really set prices myself - most people are approaching me with an offer I can either take or leave.

To try and take things to the next level, I registered with a freelancing business site (let's call them Site X due to the rule on promotions). This site lets me set my prices and has a formal ToS contract between buyers and sellers that gives me guaranteed income from each successful job done.

However...I've now been on this site for a month now, and I've been completely unable to get a sale on it. I'm competing against people who are established on the site and have tons of reviews, so getting customers on that platform interested is really hard. And customers on Reddit aren't going to be interested in signing up to Site X just to place a single order with me.

Anyone else running a business have experience with this? I think I just need to learn to market my services better on Site X, but it's super frustrating because I'm unable to monetise my knowledge in this field at all outside of informal deals with people off-site.

    Thanks for reading.

    Opening Date Questions

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 02:11 PM PST

Hey y'all I've been working on starting my small business since July. I've really taken my time with everything so I can get used to the website and everything else I need to know. I've had no prior business experience. I'm a 19 year old college student so I'm learning to balance my time. During the Christmas break I have like a month off of school. I was wondering if New Year's Day would be a good opening day. I feel like it could work and the month will be enough time to get the last of the supplies I need in. If someone could give me some input it would be much appreciated.

    Journalism?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:28 AM PST

Hi guys, and sorry for my english. What do you think about owning your journalism company? I get so frustrated by journals we have in my country. And all the people do. They are all fake news (im from European country), unprofessional, and controlled by government. So, no freedom of speech there, information they all share are often false, unverified, and I just see this as so unprofessional.

Can this work? Making a journalism company, completely non politically related, that will do the job as it should.

I guess it is not that easy, but want to hear your opinion.

    Anyone good with Woocommerce??

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 10:11 AM PST

I am confused which plugin to purchase within Woocommerce - memberships or subscriptions I would like the customer to pay immediately but have a "free trial period" time before the 30 day subscription starts. The tricky part is, I would like the customer to choose the day that the subscription period starts, so this "free trial period" could be different for every customer and I am not sure which plugin -or both- is needed.

    Help?! TIA

    Payment Gateway Recommendations

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:07 PM PST

    Hey,

I've recently been banned off PayPal (lovely support as normal) so I moved to Stripe instantly. Upon adding Stripe I saw a ton of card declines and was like what is going on: turns out Stripe doesn't allow debit cards with PINs so that just eliminated a ton of consumers. I am now stuck trying to find the best new company to go to.

Basically I want a platform as described below

User presses purchase -> Contact our backend server -> Returns some kind of URL or token to redirect the customer to that payment processors website to accept payment -> return URL to our site.

The main thing is the user pays on that payment processors website versus typing it into ours.

I would've thought out of all companies that Stripe would've definitely accepted debit cards with PINs, like it puts them at such a disadvantage without it..

    Any tips are appreciated.

Whats a good and user friendly software for making custom printed products?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 04:29 AM PST

    Hi there,

I live in Bangladesh and I am thinking of starting a custom printed products business. Customers would be sending photos or what they want printed on Facebook and I would be printing out on a vinyl paper printed on a regular inkjet or laser home printer and then transfer the print onto glass, plastic, wood etc. The idea is to make custom printed mugs, jars, cups, glasses, cutting boards, coasters, napkins, towels and so on. Something like the products from foryourparty.com. I also need to create package designs so I am looking for a software where I can design the vinyl stickers and packaging that will be printed and then transferred to the product.

Now the people who would be operating the business on a day to day basis are not computer savvy and I am having to teach them computer usage from the ground up.

I am therefore looking for a very simple and easy to use software (preferably free) on Windows 10 and Android that can be used to edit and finalize the print before printing it out on vinyl.

So what software do you suggest?

I want to create a local business - I go to the customer's home. I have a website and want people who see the ad to either go to my website or contact me directly. What would be my best option?

Im not too sure the difference between all the Facebook ads.
