Best way to submit an rfq for a custom item from alibaba? Is alibaba even the right tool for this?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:17 PM PST

I have an idea for an item I want to sell on my website but I'm unsure how to get it manufactured. It's an item that already exists but I want to make some customizations to the design and the material it's made out of. I've tried reaching out to suppliers that already make an item that's pretty similar to what I'm looking for, asking if they can modify the material it's made out of but I haven't had any luck.

Do I need to just submit a drawing of the item with a description of the materials instead? Or perhaps alibaba isn't the best place to get this done since it will likely be higher cost/lower volume. If so, what's a better marketplace for it?

Moving LLC from CA to WA?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

I just got a new job! Finally, after almost 7 months of desperate searching. Thing is, I have a single-member LLC here in CA where I have been doing some consulting work. I am now scrambling to figure out how to move in a pandemic and am not sure what to do with my LLC. I will not reside in CA anymore, so I don't want to leave it here. Not sure what I do about the address of my LLC? Pending work I have under it? Since I won't be residing in the state anymore, I feel a bit frazzled about what to do next. Advice?

Advice on finding someone to run one of my streams/businesses for me

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:26 AM PST

    Hey!

First time posting here. I run an eBay business selling 95% physical media with a partner and we're preparing to incorporate. Volume is unexpectedly crazy and we're looking to hire more people to cope with the demand and increase the amount of products sourced/listed.

When I first started I was also running a Depop (eBay meets Instagram for selling clothes.) I had set up cohesive branding, acquired a few thousand followers, made a decent amount of sales and I have ~500 items of stock in storage just doing nothing because I decided focusing on the eBay business was the best use of my time. I did and do think it was a good decision but lately I've been thinking I'm leaving money on the table by not finding someone to run it for me.

Through granular process mapping I've got 90% of the workflow down but I'm not sure about where to go from here. Anyone have any experience in doing similar? Thanks

Bought Fake Product on Facebook, Made it Better, And Started A New Business!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:43 PM PST

Bought one of these lights I saw on Facebook and got the dingy one on the left. This got me thinking..... all of these people are buying these and getting crap & that's not right, so I'm going to build my own and sell them. Bigger. Brighter. Better. We did, and after 1 month, we did a little over 10k in sales. A misleading purchase turned into a great business and couldn't be happier! Price for handmade product

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:12 AM PST

Hey. I just saw a post here from a guy who made balloons. And I was curious, tell me what price to put? My friend makes beautiful stainless steel products. https://imgur.com/gallery/KGdLE9J

He spends 2-3 weeks on one sculpture, 6 hours a day. The average price of a product is $ 400. It seems to me that this is not very fair. Can you please tell who will be interested in such sculptures? Maybe the $ 400 price seems small and people think the product is of poor quality?

Best service for voicemail-only phone number?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 11:47 PM PST

I'm part of a volunteer organization that provides advice on free community resources to consumers in small one-on-one sessions.

We normally host in-person events in the community in public spaces, but with the pandemic we've been transitioning our services to be virtual.

Because we can no longer direct consumers to one of our events in e.g., a poster or a flyer, we'd like to instead direct consumers to a (virtual--don't want to give out volunteers') phone number. We don't have manpower to cover a phone line during the entirety of business hours, so we'd like organize some sort of callback system where:

    • Consumer calls phone number and is directly lead to voicemail. Voicemail attendant introduces organization ("We are XYZ and provide information on ABC.") and requests consumer information ("If you'd like to speak to one of our counselors in a 1-on-1 session, please leave your name and telephone number, and we will get back to you.").

    • Virtual phone service saves voicemail and metadata (call from 123-456-7890 at 1:23 PM), and gives notification to user (us) that voicemail was left.

    • Multiple users can then access this voicemail, record information, and follow-up with consumer as needed. We could probably make it work even if only one user can access this voicemail inbox, but ideally multiple people can.

Does anyone know any good service that can provide something similar to the above? Ideally free, although we have a small budget we can use for this purpose (in the low hundreds annually). We're not anticipating a high call volume (<1 call per day), but we'd just like to have somewhere people can contact us without having an internet connection (because many of our consumers do not have such).

    Thanks!

Advice on lowering utility costs in a commercial space

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:10 PM PST

I have found a location for my business that is a perfect fit and was set to go ahead but... just got back info regarding their utility averages. The building is a 2000 sq ft 2 story loft space and the former business was averaging $650 per month for water/gas/electricity, which would put the monthly cost out of my comfort zone. Wondering if this number seems normal for the square footage as it seems quite high to me.

To give some info: the former renters were a small tech company with in the range of 15 - 20 computers max running. Wondering if this could account for the high bills? I am looking at using the space for a retail shop and wouldn't be leaving lights/computers on 24/7.

Wondering if this number seems average for the square footage?

First time using intl freight forwarder and need advice

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:59 PM PST

Hello! I've worked with Alibaba manufacturers that dealt with shipping, but it's my first time directly communicating with a freight forwarder from China (the forwarder my manufacturer uses). I did some research on the forwarder and found one website. Since they speak Chinese, communication is a bit difficult. I asked about how they take payment for shipping and got really vague answers and honestly it's worrying. I don't know if I can trust them with personal information or my freight.

Is this normal for forwarders, or would I be better off using Alibaba's built-in shipping platform? The only reason I'm sticking with this forwarder is because their shipping quote is lower, but if Alibaba is safer, I am willing to spend more for it :/ Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Negotiating LOI for Industrial building for Auto Shop

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:24 PM PST

    Hi there

My partner and I are planning to open an auto body repair shop in California and are preparing an LOI for a building we have found. The building was not previously used for anything automotive related. It's a simple steel building with drive-in bays and some internal structures we will be asking the landlord to demolish. We are not working with a commercial real estate broker. Should we be? Any other advice or things to look out for? Are there any building inspections we should be worried about?

    Thanks!

Have you had success with door hangers?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 10:06 PM PST

Just invest in 200 door hangers as a test run for a lawn care company. One job will pay for them, just not sure what kind of return I should expect. I am going to be selective on what doors I hang them on and not just put them on every door in a neighborhood(leaf cleanup hangers). Any idea what percent I should expect to hear back from? For people that have grown a successful lawn care company what type of marketing worked best for you?

Best way to track inventory in a small business

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 11:20 AM PST

Hello all! I run a small coffee shop in Chicago, and have a frequent problem of running out of certain supplies, luckily there's a restaurant supply store near the shop, but it'd be nice to not have to worry about running there! I was wondering if anyone would recommend an app or service that tracks inventory, maybe something multiple users can have access to (so the managers can all have access)? I was thinking about doing it the old fashioned way with a clipboard and paper, but I feel maybe an app or service exists, and would make it a lot easier and faster in the long run! Thank you very much!

How do I protect myself against design theft?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:43 PM PST

I started making enamel pins this year. I know that enamel pins are copied by stores like Ali express SUPER often, so I was wondering what steps I can take to protect myself against that happening. I've seen other pin creators have to go through long fights to have copied products removed, so what should I do? Is there a simple way I can copyright my designs in case I need to confront a design thief? What's the best course of action for me to take?

    Registered agent after merger?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:15 PM PST

I know that when you dissolve an LLC, you can cease registered agent service.

What if instead your LLC is merged into another? Obviously the surviving entity needs to maintain registered agent service, but can the entity that didn't survive terminate registered agent service?

What kind of business could be started and ran every other week?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:27 PM PST

As the title suggests, my new career position's schedule leaves me with a lot of free time. I work days one week, one week off, nights the 3rd week, one week off, and I have about 30 hours of training the 5th week and the schedule restarts. The last business I started was an entertainment business in a mall that required all of my time, so I was thinking something maybe in buying/selling/shipping of items that can be done without direct interaction with customers, but I'm struggling for ideas. My gf would also be able to assist during on weeks as well.

I’m giving up on my product idea to sell and now I’m sad

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:11 PM PST

I really wanted to make a webshop and sell Moroccan beauty products, but I realized that there's so much competition out there and it's so hard to find good suppliers. I've been spending weeks, maybe months on creating a whole branding around Moroccan products that I wanted to sell but I'm starting to give up and think of another product to sell. I don't know what and I'm kind of lost..
