Will plugging a mini-fridge using a proper extension cord still waive my coverage in case of fire?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:05 PM PDT

I just got a brand new mini-fridge and unfortunately the cord is slightly too short.

I'm planning to permanently use a brand new 6ft, appliance-rated (12AWG) extension cord.
    The fridge only draws 1.0A / 65W.

I'd like to know if this would waive my home insurance coverage in case of fire.

I can't afford contacts and my insurance won't help.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:39 AM PDT

I'm m22 in Virginia, USA and I have always had very bad vision. I have really bad astigmatism that has progressed to the point where normal glasses won't help, and every eye doctor I've been to won't give me a new prescription. They all say that I've reached the limit that glasses can do, and that I need hard contact lenses. The issue is that because I don't have a "disease" thats causing my bad vision, insurance won't cover the contacts even though I'm legally blind without them. They're $800 for the contacts and $500 for a fitting appointment so $1300 all together and I just can't afford that. Any advice on what to do? My only option to improve my vision is these contacts and I just can't afford them.

Insurance won't process tele dentistry claim

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:37 AM PDT

I am the dependent of a Metlife PPO policyholder. Under his plan I get 50% off orthodontic treatments. Recently I purchased teledentistry at-home aligner option called Byte, who helped me fill out a claim form to send to Metlife (This is common among teledentistry providers). My claim showed up as recieved in the portal, but it has yet to be processed. They promised me they would do it in 15 business days, but when I called they said they needed another week. I called again and they said they needed ANOTHER week. I called the third time today and they said they needed 15 MORE business days. This time they gave me a reference number.

I honestly don't know what to do at this point. How can I make sure they actually process it instead of just giving me bs?

    Edit: I'm in California

    Replaced FPE Electrical w/o Permit

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:32 PM PDT

I had a Zinsco electrical panel replaced today (Southern CA) without permits by a highly regarded contractor who does all of our electrical work. Before the install I inquired about obtaining permits because I became concerned about liability if a fire occurred and how insurance might handle a panel that wasn't permitted or inspected. The contractor insisted that all of his work is to code and that his liability insurance covers any damages that is unlikely to occur from their work. He provided a copy of his insurance to reference. Does anyone have any advice how to proceed? Is it true that a contractors liability insurance would cover my damages if they occurred due to the panel, and if it is determined that a fire occurred from an electrical issue that the contractor did not perform, does the lack of permit/inspection of the panel complicate a home owners insurance claim? Thank you!

Need some help. I cancelled my insurance with my agent over two months ago and am still getting charged after she said it has been handled.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:00 PM PDT

Early September I let my agent know that I can't afford to make the payments as something came up. She was nice about it and told me she would handle it. Basically was sick for a couple weeks and then took days each time to reply to me. She dodged getting it handled until I got charged again. Early October she said everything is handled and done and I double checked with her. Today I just got charged again. Do I call my bank and tell them to not allow any more payments from them? Do I just bother her endlessly until she actually helps me and does what she says? Ask for a refund since I let her know two months ago? Thank you any answers are appreciated.

Diminished value claim for just paint damage?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:23 PM PDT

Someone just hit my 6 month old ram 3500 and caused paint damage from my rear driver door to the rear wheel trim. Do I have a shot at getting anything from a diminished value claim if there is just paint damage on my truck?

There are no dents but several body panels will need to be repainted. I am in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. Thanks for the info!

My neighbor's tree fell on my roof during a recent ice storm. What are my next steps?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:42 PM PDT

My neighbor's tree fell on a portion of my roof during an ice storm. I looked up my insurance and it does cover this type of thing, but my deductible is high. Is this something their insurance will pay for or will it be my responsibility? How do I bring this up to them?

I've never filed an insurance claim before so I'm not sure how to proceed.

What are the most important things in general (and specifically) about a home insurance policy?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:33 PM PDT

I have a policy with enough coverage to cover demolition and construction costs if my home were ever destroyed in a catastrophe. I can handle the deductible. As a layperson, that seems to be all I need to be concerned about. But is it? How should I look at my home insurance policy? What specific details are critical to understand for any policy?

Unable to get comprehensive on a single car?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:15 AM PDT

I have a vehicle that I only drive in the summer, the vehicle I drive in winter is under a separate insurance policy in which I'm a secondary driver. My current insurance company is saying the only thing I can do is suspend my policy until March (when it renews) and I'll still be paying half of what I'm paying now. I've been told that if I cancel my insurance my premium will go up (although I'd still probably be paying less money than I would if I were to "suspend" it all winter) is there ANYTHING I can do here? All I want to do is put the car on comprehensive so I'm not paying 100 dollars a month for a car to essentially still not have insurance.

    Health insurance

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:47 PM PDT

Background: I have reoccurant Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I had a stem cell transplant and will be getting chemo for a year. I'm an elementary special needs teacher so I cannot return to work due to infection risk (my students are in school, in person, and require toileting/feeding assistance).

    Washington state

My employer health coverage will end when I'm at the end of FMLA. COBRA would be ~$950/month. My spouse works, but to add me to his insurance would be $700/month, with an out of pocket max of $12k. As a cancer patient, I WILL meet the out of pocket. This puts total costs at >20k for a year, which is almost half of what my spouse makes per year. It's still considered n "affordable" plan because that is based on the employee only coverage, and that is less than 9% of our income.

As far as I can tell, I'm ineligible for exchange plans because the offered insurance through his employer is "affordable".

I just turned 30, we have ~10k I'm savings (which we need to help cover our living expenses while I'm out of work). Am I just SOL because I'm young and have shitty genetics? Are there options I'm not aware of? Just trying to not die and not ruin myself/my spouse financially.

    Underinsured Motorist

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:13 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I was rear ended by an underinsured motorist, who (of course!) happened to only carry $25k in injury liability insurance.

We got that $25k and are now going through my own underinsured coverage for the rest of the medical. Should I worry that my rates will go up since my carrier is going to be paying out on this claim?

Dental Crowns / Coverage is Per Decade?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I recently got a crown replaced. I was asked by the provider when it had originally been put in. I had no idea so I guessed -that, in all likelihood- it happened in 2011. Wild guess. It was sometime around then, could have been 2010, no idea and the old dentist office is closed because (IDK? I moved away a long time ago). Lo and behold, my crown is not covered now because my new dental insurance only covers crowns once every 10 years or if an injury is sustained that causes the crown to be damaged beyond use.

I have quick questions for anyone willing to help me sleep tonight:

    1. Is 10 years normal? I know I cant fight it, but someone please make me feel not as insane as I do right now and tell me that 10 years is NOT normal and it's usually 5 7 or 8 years per crown replacement!?
    2. Would an eating injury that caused the crown to crack be considered an injury?! I ate something, which injured my crown. Can I go with this??? Or does it have to be a catastrophic I-was-catapulted-from-a-malfunctioning-rollercoaster-and-almost-beheaded-and-also-my-crown-broke-during-said-event.
    3. Is $1900 for a crown a normal price in a non-city setting?!
    4. Can someone hold me?

    Thanks.

Norcal Bay Bridge 80 westbound today 4:20pm

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:31 PM PDT

To the white Mercedes that was speeding and weaving through traffic near the 9th street off ramp today,

    I hope you get fucked.

You caused an accident between me and another car as we both swerved to avoid your dumb ass. I'm 100% at fault according to AAA.

Now my insurance is going to go up and I'm out at least $1300, which maybe isn't a lot of money for you, but it is for me.

Trying very hard to remind myself that things could have been a lot worse and that comparatively this is a rainbow in comparison to the shitshow that is 2020.

    Really though, get fucked!!!

Glass Repair - Geico saying only $40/hr for labor (Leased car)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:15 PM PDT

    Hello there,

I'm guessing this starting to get a bit complex so I wanted to get advice from this community. I have a Volvo XC90 on lease (one year in) and I discovered that the windshield was cracked (about 1.5 feet) - its pretty clear that we need to get it replaced. No clue as to the cause - discovered it when I started driving it and have been using it very lightly due to Covid. My deductible with Geico is $50 in California.

I called Geico and they wanted to hook me up with their preferred vendor (Safelite) - who will come and do the repair but they will use aftermarket parts. This may not be acceptable for a leased car so I don't prefer this option (if somebody knows how this works and this maybe ok, do let me know!). If I have to ask them to use OEM, it's going to cost ~$600.

The dealership has an associated collision center that they want me to use - but they have given me a quote of ~$2000, in which labor is charged at $130/hr x 5hrs but Geico says that they will cover only up to $40/hr. So I will be on the hook for a very similar amount. The dealership says that they have worked with Geico in the past and they cover, but they say that they do so only for "Collision" and not for "Glass repair".

I'm thoroughly confused about it by now as you can imagine :) and unsure who is taking me for a ride and who is not. Does anybody have experience with windshield repairs for a leased car, and if so whats the recommended strategy.

    TIA!

Insurance estimate higher than actual repair cost

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:02 PM PDT

I filed a claim with my car insurance and was ultimately found to be not at fault for the accident.

My insurance already issued a check and said they will get the amount repaid by the at fault party's insurance via subrogation.

The check is a two party check for myself and the body shop doing the repairs. I picked up the car today and the repair cost was less than the amount on the check. The body shop told me to pay out of pocket and cash the check myself. He endorsed the check as well so it is ready cash.

Before I cash it I wanted to confirm if this is acceptable or if I need to inform my insurance?

Edit: this is in Georgia if that's relevant

Dental (IL): How far back can I file a claim?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:43 AM PDT

For a data analysis project, I gathered and tabulated everything related to my dental procedures, costs, and insurance. I discovered that there were two procedures back in 2016 and 2017 that my dentist should have filed a claim under my employer's dental insurance.

I was wondering if there's an average time limit how far back I can file a claim. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to track down my dental benefits booklet. It's complicated since my employer changed dental plans and insurance company since then.

Should I be removed from my guardian’s insurance policy after DUI?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I'm in the military and got an on base DUI. I was driving my friends vehicle, not my own. I haven't long left home, so my truck is still in my guardian's name as well as the insurance policy, which is where my question begins. I went to base traffic court today and was told that I'm losing on base driving privileges for two years. I was also told that the DMV in both NC(state of the incident) and GA(home state) would be alerted of my on base DUI and they will decide what to do administratively. I really don't want to screw my guardian over by upping their insurance premiums when I won't be able to drive for a while, most likely, anyways. I was wondering if we removed me as a driver from the insurance before my license are revoked/suspended and I return the vehicle to home, can I save my guardian their insurance policy from being non-renewed or becoming more expensive? There was no crash and no claims filed. The military treats this as a minor offense and it is only a ticket, not a full criminal trial— the punitive actions are left to your commanding officer to make the decision and I was punished non-judicially. Thanks.

    Confused about HSA and COBRA

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:07 PM PDT

How do I use my HSA to pay my COBRA premium? On the COBRA site, it wants an account number and routing number for the payment, but I don't have a routing number for the HSA. Can I pay the COBRA premium with my checking account and then request reimbursement from the HSA? Am I setting myself up for any tax issues later if I use that method?

    Edit: Location is California, sorry!

No fault state uninsured motorist question

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:27 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I have a question for someone I work with. We are in Florida, a no fault state. She was involved in an accident recently. The other (insured) (and drunk) driver caused the accident. Her vehicle was totaled. When she called her own insurance company she found that her car had not been insured for the last year. Apparently, the payments are taken directly out of her account for her and her son's vehicle and she somehow did not notice that she had only been paying to insure one vehicle for an entire year... anyway, does she have any chance at reimbursement of any type or a loaner vehicle from the insured driver that caused the accident?

    Question for Auto insurance adjusters

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:06 AM PDT

Is anyone doing 'virtual' inspections and if so how are they being done? I'm curious as to the process and what I should expect out of my current situation.

My 2015 Lexus was stolen/recovered in New Jersey and is currently at the shop getting evaluated. I'm afraid the adjuster by doing a virtual inspection won't be able to really see the damages done. If the car is totaled I'll be replacing it with the same model, but if it's deemed repairable I would want it to be brought back to the perfect condition it was in previously.

Some of the damages that I can see:

    - All locks and computer related to ignition need to be replaced

    - Front Bumper broken

    - All 4 wheels and tires will need to be replaced

    - Windshield cracked

    - Scratches throughout the car

    - Interior needs to be removed and completely detailed (thieves left 80 empty bags of weed in the car, weed blunts broken up everywhere, they ashed their cigarettes on the seats/floor/center console

    - Interior trim pieces were broken

    - Tie Rod / Suspension pieces in front end were snapped. Car wasn't able to steer or move.

    Damages I can't see:

    - Car was stolen without a key, tow trucks had to drag the car around to move it once it was recovered. Given that the car is AWD I can imagine that the transmission has suffered some damages as well. I did not try to start the car or move it at the tow yard so who knows what condition the drivetrain is in.

Should I start looking for a replacement vehicle or expect a month or two until my car is fixed and back home? Thank you!

    EDIT: Forgot to add location.

I needed a 12-15 passenger van with a hitch. Couldn't get anything like it . So I lost 7 days of work or like 3000 dollars. I wasn't at fault two other people were. My wife says I won't get anything. I feel like I should.
