    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Oct 13, 2020

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

I have $213,000 in Apple (AAPL) stock, should I start to diversify?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 02:19 AM PDT

I always tell myself to stop buying Apple, but I always give in because Apple is such a cash machine. Would you start diversifying new money in companies such as Square (SQ), Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN). Or would you keep adding more to Apple (AAPL)?

Edit: Apple (AAPL) is my entire portfolio, don't own anything else.

Second Edit: Damn this blew up.

Key Investor Takeaways from Apple Event

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I watched the Apple event in its entirety so that you don't have to. I've written up some of the key takeaways.

Tldr: Apple is positioning itself to compete more directly with Amazon's Alexa, improving their services user experience with improved device performance, and using pro models to appeal to an enterprise market rather than just device enthusiasts.

There are basically two major offerings:

    Apple Speakers

Apple is fully committing to competing with Amazon's Alexa and other smart speakers by offering a new HomePod Mini and leaning into an offering that only they can, namely the cross device functionality like the intercom feature. It's hard to overstate how much more room to deliver Apple has vs Amazon in this space, especially given their history of super useful cross platform integration.

The $99 price tag is in line with Apple's premium pricing strategy which will help "fend off gross margin compression". There's historically been concern that Apple's pricing strategy sacrifices accessibility to consumers. That said, Apple has a long history of reaping the rewards from an initial device offering and offering a commodity priced product some years later. HomePod and the SE line are examples of this strategy at work and I wouldn't be surprised to see the same strategy here in the next year.

    iPhone 12

There's been a lot of hype surrounding iPhone 12 and while the YouTube reviewers will have their opinions, for investors, this is a home run. Investors ought to expect widespread upgrades and adoption for what is a genuinely impressive leap in performance.. There are a few changes to iPhone that substantially improves device performance and creates a new market for accessories. The most important include:

Faster, faster, and Faster: iPhone 12 is going to be leaps and bounds faster than pretty much anything else between 5G functionality, improved LTE performance, and a processor that is just absolute overkill. This will enable better UE for Apple services like gaming and streaming and increases the value proposition for subscription services.

5G integration done right: 5G isn't really ready but Apple has thought through how to make it useful while it ramps up. Their NFL collaboration underscores how they will leverage regional availability into functionality for users.

Everything is wireless and magnetic: Apple is finally leaning into MagSafe in a way that makes sense for users and they're creating a whole new line of compatible accessories to boot. Great function but also a great for revenue during the holiday shopping season.

Pro Models: Apple has a long history of serving enterprise, in particular the medical community. They've leaned into that market in the new iPhone 12 pro with a pretty explicit pitch. We should expect to see rising adoption in medical enterprise throughout 2021.

Pricing: iPhone 12 pricing starts at $699 and as they punctuate in the conclusion, the iPhone line has an entry point for every budget. They've made entry and upgrade as painless as possible with partners like Verizon.

My personal take is BUY. As IT recovers from a bit of a correction from recent sugar highs Apple is showing once again that they can see around the corner and react nimbly.

Long term hold - Raytheon- 25% upside

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 09:17 AM PDT

    Disclaimer - I own $11k of RTX

I've been holding for a few months now - the price swings are something to play on if you like to day trade or trend trade; but I'm also in it for the long haul.

IMO, while the company does have some macroeconomic headwinds ahead, it's still undervalued by about 25%.

Credit Suisse just came out yesterday and said: "...we're relatively less bullish here on a near-term basis compared to other aerospace names, though we see RTX as well positioned on a 2-3 year view, which supports our Outperform rating..."

Current price target is $75 from credit suisse, $78 from morning star, Jeffries at $80, etc.

I'm essentially buying dips and selling short dated calls.

    Disney $DIS becoming attactive. Thoughts?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 09:40 AM PDT

Well it's not official yet. Disney still needs to let go of the past and accept the future: eg no more theaters first, streaming second. But we want to buy the rumors, if you wait for the news you are too late. Finally the right time to buy DIS, the chart might finally stop looking like a bank savings account. Thoughts?

Apple going to bring down the market?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:38 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So today I just sold a majority of my Apple stock alongside some others. Given that the Apple conference really wasn't all that special and was to be expected do you think this will be a catalyst for the beginning of a large dip? I'm just saying that this can add to the already poor economy, increasing covid numbers, general election.

P.S I am not asking you too look into your "crystal balls" just for a meaningful discussion.

How do companies make money from stock price?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:26 AM PDT

So I understand companies make money at IPO by selling a big chunk of stocks to a bank. And then the bank sells those shares to the public. But after that, stocks go to secondary market: I buy from you and you make money, the brokerage makes money. How does Apple make money because the stock price goes up? Does that mean companies own their own stock?

How to track down who holds a stock

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT

I was not really sure where to ask this, so here I am.

My grandfather died recently and left some amgen stock that he purchased back in the day. He didn't give any instructions with regard to any of his assets because he did not want to think about his death.

I don't know if he owns this stock through a brokerage account or who that account might be with. Is there any way to track down who is holding onto a stock?

Thank you, I know this is a bit of a strange question.

Is $WKHS a good investment right now?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I know i'm late to the party, but i've been watching Workhorse for the last couple days and wanted to gather opinions on it. Does anyone think the company will win the USPS contract? If so, what do you forecast the price to be in the coming months? I can't imagine that the recent allegations about their prototype failing will cause a long lasting negative impact on the stock. I also don't think it will affect USPS on making a decision on the 6.3B contract, especially considering this took place nearly 2 years ago but is just now surfacing. $WKHS is almost at the lowest it's been in a month. Is it a good time to buy in? Or should I wait for price to drop further?

Need help understanding limit sell and stop limit on Wealthsimple

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:05 AM PDT

So I thought I understood limit buys and sells but I'm a little confused now. With a limit buy you basically set a share price at which you want to execute a purchase of that stock for x number of shares right? I thought the same thing applied to limit sell where you set a target price and the number of shares and then just leave it. However, when I try to do that on Wealthsimple for a price that's lower than the current one it just says it will sell it at the current price. I wanted to put a limit sell on AAPL at $121 so if it dropped to that price it would sell my shares but when I would enter that request it would give me a warning saying that the price target is below the current price so it would probably just sell now.

I must not understand how it works because that was my assumption and I'm assuming the same applies to limit buys but I feel like I've gotten that one wrong as well. If anyone could shed some light on this that would be greatly appreciated!

Is there really any reason not to invest everything into Amazon and Apple?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 05:24 PM PDT

I mean i could f go or ETFs but is it really a possibility that either apple or amazon wont continue to grow over the next 5 years?

I'm not expecting them to double themselves but i just can't see either one of them out of our lives in the next decade..

The way i see it, they're basically ETFs themselves. Can someone wake me up and tell me im wrong because this just seems like such easy money it honestly baffles me..

    Early Investments

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I recently turned $18 and I want to get into stocks. I've been doing some research through investopedia and I got some basic knowledge of how stocks work. I am currently unemployed, and have about $500 to invest into stocks right now. Should I invest into an index fund or an ETF? or should I invest into stocks that I believe in such as AAPL or TSLA?

Also there are many different types of stock investments such as dividend investors, day traders, growth investors and others. As a beginner I want to dabble in all of them but my gut says I should start with one and improve my skills as an investor. Which investing style would be ideal for a novice as myself? Also are there any other tips or recommendations you guys can give me? Any sources or channels to help me learn and grow are high appreciated as well. Thank you

Here is a Market Recap for today Tues, Oct 13. Please enjoy!

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:06 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Stocks traded mostly lower today, losing some of yesterday's gains. Market participants are digesting the first batch of corporate earnings, special events from giants Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL), and as usual, developments in Washington regarding fiscal stimulus.

The Nasdaq (QQQ) finished even on the day. The S&P 500 (SPY) 0.64% down and the Dow Jones (DIA) finished 0.58%.

Economists and financial analysts expect companies within the S&P 500 to post an aggregate earnings per share decline of 19.4% over this year. This estimate is higher than the 20.5% decline predicted back in the Spring. LPL Research said in a note, "The increase in analysts' earnings estimates reflects increased confidence in the outlook, even with the challenges Covid-19 still presents in terms of social distancing, various safety protocols, and shifting consumer behavior. We have been encouraged by recent data pointing to a continued steady reopening of the economy, and we believe the likelihood that additional lockdowns may meaningfully impair business activity remains very low.

Today, in a letter, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the White House's new proposal for coronavirus aid, saying that "in terms of addressing testing, tracing and treatment, what the Trump Administration has offered is wholly insufficient." After a day of promising developments yesterday, it appears stimulus negotiations have stalled once again. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel said his party was preparing a new, targeted package of "roughly $500 billion". However, Pelosi has stated in the past, in response to the airline relief bill, that she will not support targeted stimulus, only a comprehensive package. Over the weekend, the Trump administration called on Congress to pass a smaller $1.8 billion coronavirus relief bill as negotiations on a bigger package continue to run into roadblocks.

    Highlights

    • Today Apple announced a slate of new products, including the next generation of iPhones (the iPhone 12) that supports the burgeoning 5G network. It also announced a new smart home speaker and a new way to charge devices, called MagSafe, which lets charger, cases, and other accessories snap onto the back of the device using a magnet. The stock was down today, after rallying around 6% yesterday.
    • Today is Amazon Prime Day "one-day only event filled with more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Prime members around the globe." The world's largest online retailer is slashing the prices on a lot of popular items.
    • Eli Lilly's (LLY) late-stage trial of its leading monoclonal antibody treatment for the coronavirus has been paused by U.S. health regulators over potential safety concerns, the company confirmed. The stock was more than 3.3% down at the time of writing.

      • EPS $2.20 vs $1.98 estimate
      • Revenue of $21.08 billion vs $20.15 billion estimate.
      • The company late-stage coronavirus vaccine was paused after a participant reported an "adverse event" about 36 hours earlier, the company's chief financial officer said today
    • Boeing (BA) said Tuesday that it didn't win any new orders in September and delivered only 11 aircrafts this month, due to decreased demand in light of the pandemic.
    • Workhorse (WKHS) shares are around 12.8% after a USPS contract decision was reportedly delayed, prompting a stock downgrade from Roth Capital.
    • BMO Capital markets upgrades in the hotel space:
      • Hilton Hotels (HLT) $72 to $89 from UNDERPERFORM to MARKET PERFORM

Unity Software showing a nearly perfect cup and handle pattern over the last three weeks

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 03:22 AM PDT

My understanding is that the time frame is too short for it to be a "true" cup and handle pattern, but since it's a recent IPO, it accounts for nearly half its time on the market. In any case, up over 4% in premarket today. Maybe worth a watch.
