I'm getting prepared for a major surgery and need help understanding what information I need to gather.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:36 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

My primary care doctor, my orthodontist, and my dentists (it's a father/son team that handle unique cases) all agree that I am going to need jaw surgery to fix my regressed lower jaw, help with my sleep apnea, and help with TMJ/grinding/clicking. I have two consults with different maxillofacial surgeons to go over my options. One my orthodontist facetimed with while I was present, and he told me that he's going to recommend a genioplasty as well as the jaw surgery. That's all I know so far.

These consults are in two weeks, and I'm wondering what questions I need to ask to make sure that I'm able to effectively approach my health and dental insurers to see what's covered? My dental is Delta Dental Premier plus PPO, and my health insurance is BCBS. I know that there are certain codes you have to ask about.. how do I get that code information from the plastic surgeons when I meet with them?

    Thank you!

Edit: my location is VA, USA

Accident-prone dog. Can I claim? (UK)

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:27 AM PDT

I submitted a claim for some expensive scans on my dog's leg, but they were denied by my insurer who used my dog's medical history to build a case against the claim - which doesn't seem true.

My dog recently had knee surgery to fix what's called a laxating patella which means her right leg hops when she walks. This was discovered just over a year ago. We tried strength training and then opted for knee surgery a few months ago.

Surgery went well but a month after, when she was fully recovered, she was speeding through the hallway and jumped on a rug which slid and caused her to hit her leg - the one which had surgery - on the wainscoting.

After this she couldn't walk on her back leg and was in lots of pain so I took her to the vet. They recommended we take some scans to be analysed by the knee surgeon. This was pretty expensive - about £700.

A couple of days later her leg was back to normal. The vet said it was probably a sprain, but they couldn't be sure.

I tried to claim the scans back but the insurer has denied the claim, saying that the laxating patella had contributed to the accident, and that condition had reached its claim time limit.

It seems a jump to deny the claim on these grounds, particularly as I saw the accident and it didn't seem to be influenced by her dodgy leg.

Can I still claim back in this case? What would a successful appeal of their decision look like?

    Thanks for your help!!

Renting apartment. Sewer water overflowed from upstairs multiple times. Who's responsible? What action can we take? ASAP

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:33 AM PDT

I (22m) live with my mum in the VA/MD area in an apartment (rented). The people upstairs rent also and we've never met them until yesterday. Water started shooting out of both ceiling vents in the master bedroom, yellow/brown water. It continued for a few hours. I took pictures and video, ran upstairs, asked the people what was going on (woman and her son), she said she broke her toilet tank by leaning on it and water gushed out the bottom (only the amount in the tank, apparently). I ran down, took more pics and video, called my mum, my landlord. Landlord said it would be handled through insurance. The leak was clearly more than the amount of water in a toilet tank, so I ran back upstairs, the woman invited me in, and I noticed a huge puddle in her master bedroom. I pointed it out and her son went in and said "oh. It's clogged. Oops." Water had been overflowing from their clogged toilet the whole time.

After that call, a few hours went by and the upstairs landlord came to assess the upstairs situation with plumbers. He also came in to check our ceiling and determined that there doesn't seem to be a busted line. It was purely the toilet situation. At this point our ceiling is damp, discolored, and starting to leak. About 20 minutes goes by, (about 3.5 hours had passed at this point), and the leaks which had finally begun slowing down a little, started up again, full force. I run upstairs to ask what's going on and they say "oh. we tried to flush it again to test it, and it all overflowed again and there's a couple inches of water on the ground again." so we put the bucket out again. The upstairs property manager says he needs to wait until Monday for insurance to respond.

Long story short, our master bedroom is covered in sewer water (brown and yellow) and things smell, and I'm not clear on who pays for what, and who to speak with. There's our landlord (M), the property manager for the building (B), the upstairs landlord (F), and the people living upstairs (S). We can't be expected to clean it ourselves, we've lost all our towels, a handmade mattress, buckets, trash cans, sheets, etc, and there's the fact of the cleanup job. What's the protocol here?

TL;DR. Rental apartment covered in sewer water because of upstairs rental apartment. Our landlord (M), property manager for the whole building (B), the upstairs landlord (F), and the people living upstairs (S). What's the protocol. How do we get this cleaned and taken care of and replace our lost property properly? (F) says he needs to wait until Monday for insurance to respond. Do we have to let the sewer water and smell to settle in and seep in to the bathroom and bedroom? Should we ask the upstairs neighbors to do it?

    Edit: details

Why can't I have tyre damage on my insurance?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:37 AM PDT

So I've been told a few times over the years that you can't get insurance against damage to tyres.

Which makes me wonder, why not?

I mean, plenty of things that could destroy tyres that would otherwise be insurable, for example I swerve to miss some knob jockey and avoid an accident but hit a gutter, destroying my suspension, tyres, rims, bumper, etc, if I get them on dashcam I can claim against them (Australia, excepting WA)

Now not much bothers my 4x4, but high speed with a gutter could screw the tyres, and considering it's a ute (pickup), no weight in the back means the back can skid easily, even with ABS, causing flat spotting on tyres.

So if I get it all on dash cam, why can I not claim insurance on tyres?

Hell, even if I was at fault, my excess (deductible?) is around $500-750 depending on circumstances (on-road/off-road), and my tyres are $500 each, so there could be circumstances when a claim would be cheaper, to me, damaging a tyre off road is no different to me accidentally driving into a tree and bending a panel.

But I can claim insurance on the panel, but not the tyre, and I tell you, I've bent more panels over the years than I've damaged tyres.

Also I've been a victim of staking on tracks, and they did catch the culprits who admitted to the staking at the location I got staked, so that would be cut and dry for an insurance company to claim back against if someone was specifically charged with causing the damage.

But my insurance company said they didn't care the culprits were caught, tyres and rims aren't a claimable item unless damaged in an independent accident, so there went $700 on a tyre and a rim (star picket, through both tyre and rim)

Ergo, get hit on the quarter, get a new tyre and rim, damage it without any more damage, get nothing

In fact they told me if I'm in an accident with a third party and the ONLY damage was a tyre and rim, not covered, even if it's the spare in the back of my 4x4, so, a rear ender that damages the tyre and rim, but not the car.

[Advice] I am booking a chalet (FR) for my friends and me (UK), what should I do to cover us?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:17 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've made a deposit (1000€) a couple of months ago for a chalet in the French Alps and I am planning to go there end of January 2021 with friends of mine. We should be around 12 people in total. Regarding the accommodation, I am the one paying for the whole amount (around 3500€), and my name will be on the contract with the owner.

With the COVID situation, the problem is that lots of my friends now are changing their minds (which I completely get) as the situation might still be difficult for traveling, but also because they haven't found an insurance policy that will cover them.

    Therefore, I've got two options:

    1. I cancel the reservation and will get my deposit when the chalet owner will find a replacement
    2. I find a way to have everyone covered if they can't make it

I have "psychologically " prepared myself for the first option and I am fine with that if that's the only thing I can do.

But what about the second? Can group travel insurance be a solution? The idea is that if I pay 3500 for 12 persons and one can't come (covid positive, lockdown...), they and I don't lose 290€.

    What would you do?

    Thanks!

Rear ended someone, just need some advice

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:47 PM PDT

Hello all, just as the title says, I rear ended someone (CA). Basically person in front of me slammed their brakes and I slammed mine. I was about four cars behind him at the furthest right freeway lane going about 45-50 mph but we ended up colliding. His car had some damage to the rear bumper and my car is pretty much totaled, but I'm unsure the complete extent of the other car's damage. From the outside it looked like aesthetic damages only but I'm no expert, there could be more.

I just want to know what the process is going to be since this is my first accident. We filed a police report and got my car towed. I called insurance and filed a claim and they said they'll take care of things. I'm getting a new car because I need one for work. I also got a letter saying the other person claimed bodily injury and that I am at fault, which is what I expected since I was the rear car. Any tips/advice/stories on moving forward from here would be greatly appreciated as I am just very stressed. Like how much is my insurance going to increase from this? Lots of questions but I am definitely driving a lot more cautious from now on and give even more leeway towards the front driver.

Question about condo fire - Michigan

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:04 PM PDT

A friend's mom has a condo down the street from us. Two years ago there was a fire in one of the buildings. Her homeowners paid out for the interior cosmetic damage, but my friend insists the HOAs insurance is responsible for the exterior, and the interior can't be done until the exterior is done. They are getting no response from the HOA or the insurance company.

She has run out of housing assistance from her insurance, and still has to pay her mortgage and association fee. This seems so ridiculous.

You guys have been helpful in the past. Does she need an attorney? Should she go to the state insurance board?

Rental Car Liability Insurance when you don't already have Car Insurance

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 02:48 PM PDT

Hello, seeking some help here. It's so difficult to research this online.

I think I might rent a car for a total of 10-15 rental days the next 12 months. I do NOT have a personal car, and therefore I do not have a car insurance plan.

I'm trying to figure out what is the most affordable way to meet the minimum legal requirements to have LIABILITY insurance when I rent a car. I am not interested in discussing collision damage waivers, or anything else that's not the legally required insurance. Generally I've seen that it costs ~$15 per day if you get Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) from the rental car company.

First off, can someone help me confirm that it is required to get SLI if I don't have a personal insurance plan? Second, are there any smarter alternatives? I've seen a couple references to Umbrella Insurance, which I think is a plan I pay for to cover myself for a lot of things, including rental car liability legal requirements.

Note: I live in Illinois and am thinking of renting cars in Colorado and Utah.

    Thanks!

    New info:
OK so I've been reading more and I'm starting to conclude that the rental agreement is actually required to already have the minimum liability coverage required by law. In other words, there is no need to purchase any insurance at all to meet the legal requirement. Here are some references. Tell me what you think?

"By law, rental companies must provide the state required minimum amount of liability insurance coverage" https://www.iii.org/article/rental-car-insurance

"Most states require car rental companies to provide the state minimum levels of liability insurance as part of the basic rental fee." https://wallethub.com/edu/ci/non-owner-car-insurance/9833

"In most states, the rental company must provide state minimum coverage by law, so you usually don't need to buy any extra coverage to meet legal requirements." https://www.autoslash.com/blog-and-tips/posts/renting-a-car-in-california-watch-out-for-this-insurance-gotcha

    Snapshot with New Car?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Hey guys, I have a question for anyone that's done the Progressive Snapshot program. I've been doing it for about two weeks now, and I think I've been doing alright. I'm from the Atlanta area, not sure if that's relevant but I might as well include it. My question is this: I'm thinking about getting a new car here in the next 6 months to a year and trading in my current car. If I were to do that, would I have to do the Snapshot program all over again, or will my score from my initial program transfer over to the new car? Has anyone bought a new car after completing Snapshot?

Had 1st Home Owners Insurance Claim Ever. Worried About Rate Increase!

Had a claim for water damage. I have had the same policy for many years. I am worried about a rate increase. The claim has been finalized. Should I consider switching carriers? I'm sure there is a database where all these claims are filed. How long does it stay on my record? Thanks!

[US, CA] Condo pipe leak, possibly negligence?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 04:15 PM PDT

I inherited a condo last year and am preparing it to sell. Upon working on the kitchen remodel my contractor found a leak that has caused water damage under the floor and to the back of the cabinets, and is leaking out from under the stucco of the exterior wall.

We sourced the leak to a pipe in the wall of an outdoor closet. This pipe belongs to the upstairs neighbors property. It's a rental and has been vacant for 6 months but very recently become occupied again which is how we found it.

Now where things get weirder is somebody clearly tried to repair this pipe before. The wall had been cut out and replaced and the pipe was wrapped in duct tape.

I cannot know for sure because it must have been done many years ago, but I believe either the "repair" to the neighbors pipe was conducted either by the HOA, who uses a plumber whose known to be incompetent, or the upstairs neighbor.

I've contacted the HOA manager to review but I'm not sure what the likely outcome is. I've got condo insurance but unsure if they will cover a pipe that doesn't belong to me and I'm reluctant to file a claim before I find out whose responsibility this is.

My car was rear ended, other driver was deemed at-fault. Can I sue? (please read below)

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 02:30 PM PDT

I parked my car Friday night after coming home from work right outside my house on the street as lots of people do. Woke up Saturday morning to the police at my door saying that my neighbor had rear ended my car Friday night after I had gone to bed. He didn't even leave a note. Filed a claim with his insurance and he was deemed at-fault. The car was then taken to a reputable body shop where the total damages were estimated at $11k+. The insurer decided the car was a total loss.

I'm now left with two choices: Take the settlement (which is less than the current loan on the car) and be left with 5k+ in remaining loan payments and NO car

    Or

Sue the other driver, who has the money (very wealthy neighbor) to pay off and replace my car with like and kind quality.

    What can I do?

If I have to pay more than my copayment, then what does “copayment” even mean?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:00 AM PDT

My eye insurance has a $50 copayment for a contact lens consultation. The in-network provider in my neighborhood charges $85 for a contact lens consultation. I asked my insurance if they would reimburse me for the extra $35.

They said "Your vision benefit covers all allowed charges, the co-pays and the overage is patients responsibility and can not be reimbursed."

If that's the case, then isn't my copayment completely meaningless? They could tell me that it's $0.01 or $1,000,000 and I would still be paying $85.

What car insurance is best?? Idk who to trust.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 01:24 PM PDT

I have progressive just because I have heard of it. Except I feel like I'm overpaying, and they know I'm overpaying, and they want me to pay more. I quoted a new policy with them using the same information and it came up much cheaper than what I pay now. About %40 cheaper for the same exact car.

I tried to talk to them about this, and the amount of nonsensical answers and redirections I got was just suspicious as fuck. They pretty much wouldn't tell me if I could lower my rate or now, but they sent me an email offer to renew my current policy and I think it's even priceier than it is now.

I tried to make a quote with gieco for the same exact car and it came up significantly cheaper than what I pay now. I'm single, non-vet, over 25 with a clean driving record. So why is there a discrepancy in prices when I get a quote? Does this have to do with the amount of coverage? As for right now I have full coverage and I think that's what my quotes were for.

Medicaid and Retroactive denial dealing with SS office

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 01:14 PM PDT

I'm in NC and every time I applied for Medicaid while unemployed, they signed me up for family planning only, which was irrelevant to my needs. My case worker was inaccessible and this exhausted time costing me a retroactive denial. Can anything be done legally about this? Is there a timeframe restriction to act? The appeal window has past.

3rd party insurance claim only puts their driver at 70% liability, I had no insurance to negotiate with them.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:21 PM PDT

After reviewing the statements, police report and photos, we have finalized our liability decision. At this point we will be accepting 70% liability. The reason being is that the point of impact to our vehicle is the rear wheel well. With majority of our vehicle crossing in front of your vehicle, evasive action should have been attempted.

Should you disagree with this decision please contact your insurance carrier to proceed with repairs through them, they will subrogate AMFAM for whatever liability amount they determine. Should you want to go ahead and proceed with repairs through AMFAM at 70%, please provide an estimate we will review and issue payment at 70%.

Okay so, I was involved in a crash a while ago (Wisconsin) where someone blew a stop sign to the left of me and I t-boned them. Officer witnessed the incident, issued them a citation for failure to yield and sent us on our way. He did not ask about my insurance, luckily, because I was not insured (I got insured hours later).

Now, after their insurance company (American Family Insurance) made their liability decision, they came to the conclusion that I could have made evasive maneuvers when I simply could not have, as there was oncoming traffic in the only direction that I could have evaded to. However, I can't have my insurance fight for me (I think) as I was uninsured at the time of the accident.

Should I just accept the 70% they offered, which I believe is unfair, or should I not? Could I negotiate to 80% or 90% somehow? Please help.

No Insurance to Help with Hospital Costs

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:15 PM PDT

    Location: Illinois

My friend's brother (22) has bipolar disorder, stopped meds briefly, had a psychotic episode and attacked his family with a knife 4 days ago (Monday). He's now in jail charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Parents are still in hospital and have no insurance due to COVID-19 taking their jobs.

What can be done to help with hospital bills? I'm assuming it'll be monstrous due to the many scans and surgeries that were done.
