I grow my business by 10% PER MONTH (Gross, higher % on Net) and I'm still falling behind!

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 03:26 PM PDT

I have a small business that I recently acquired and have been trying to grow.

The highlights? I've done more in gross sales in 4 months than the last owners did in 12 the previous 12 months pre COVID. I've effectively tripled the business. And I've still got room to scale up 10x further. For the most part my business only runs at 30% productivity and I'm staffed accordingly and could triple the amount of availabilities.

I have so much room to grow but I'm afraid I'm not going to get there soon enough. I'm running out of runway due to some unforeseen expenses.

I grow my Gross sales every month by 10%+, month over month. My Net sales increase by even more than that. My payroll expense is flat. I have new customers coming in every single day and we're retaining them! They're coming back and booking new appointments. Almost half of the time they book their next visit on the spot!

But I've still yet to turn a profit.

I have new clients finding me via Instagram (3-7 per month) and just answering DMs they fall in love with our level of customer service.

I see a total of about 80 new clients per month. People who have never been in the business before.

We get about 150 appointments per month at an average ticket price of about (NET) $60.

If I were to double the first number (the latter is unlikely to change by a huge margine) that would be nice. But I'm not seeing any more options for myself aside from waiting to grow, which as mentioned, I have a limited runway here.

I have reoccurring expenses monthly that I'm not thrilled to cut because I don't think they'll make a dent.

Marketing: ~2500 - This covers FB/IG/Google Adwords as well as my SEO and website from reputable firms. I think this is a huge portion of my growth here.

Payroll: ~11k - I am not included in payroll here

    Rent: 3100

Supplies: ~1000/month - This one varies a bit here and is more an average of months. If business doubled, this might increase 20% but possibly not even.

I have a great location, I get great reviews all the time, my staff are declining other job offers but this will all disappear if I can't figure out what I'm missing here.

What am I missing? I'll be here for the rest of the evening to answer any questions and provide any information. Reddit, save my business!

EDIT: This has been a great conversation. Some of you have provided really great perspective and insight!

Some trends I've noticed! Almost every single post here has focused on cutting! Literally not a single person, outside of one DM, has talked about utilizing that 70% downtime! Really interesting the shared perspective!

EDIT 2: Bed time for most! Great discussion overall! A lot of people really focused on cutting costs! It's one way to skin a cat! I also got some great ideas on growing revenue!

Small parcel price from USA to UK

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 03:45 AM PDT

I need to organise a customer return of a small parcel (eyewear) from USA to me in the UK. I was wondering if there is a way to generate a label for them with Royal Mail and pay for it my end. If I send the package from Uk to USA it costs £12.30 but the customer says the cheapest they can find from USA to Uk is $60. How do I get the same price I'd pay to send it out to bring it back?

    Stressy and depressy

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 06:01 PM PDT

SO. I'm 25, an artist, and huge crafter. And currently a stay at home mom. I paint, do digital drawings, make ceramic tile decor, jewelry, keychains.... pretty much anything you can think of. My dream is to eventually own a craft store to sell my own, and other local artists creations, as well as it be an open studio and have paint classes some days.

I'm just starting out seriously trying to build a stock and sell. I'm planning a pop up shop in my yard next month (hoping to catch people out for yard sales), and I've also been trying to sell online in the process. But I've had absolutely no luck. It's really disheartening, and I have no clue what I'm doing wrong, or what I should be doing. I'm not so great with Instagram or things like that so I've been pushing on FB, but that doesn't seem like it's gonna help.

I've been told to use Etsy but I'm not wanting to pay for listings that won't sell.

    Help please 😭

Buying a domain name - domain unavailable

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 02:40 AM PDT

    Morning everyone,

Hope you've all had a good week so far. I have a quick questions regarding domain names.

There is one that I would looooove to have. It's perfect. And completely unused. Someone owns it and has sat on it since 1996. Looks like it expires in 2 years almost to the day

What's the deal with trying to get hold of it? Not sure where I'd even start.

    Thanks!

How Do I Market And Sell A Small (6 Client) Medical Billing Business?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 06:24 AM PDT

I have been owner / operator of this 6 client medical billing business in Southern Maine for 9 years. I recently accepted a full time position in a different field and would rather not spend time on my days off running the billing business.

It currently earns me $1200 - $1500 / mo. and at times $2k / mo. depending on volume. I charge my clients 7% of gross receipts / mo. I spend roughly 8 - 10 hrs. / wk. managing it w/ MediSoft software and my biggest expense is clearinghouse monthly fee of $163. Other expenses are minor - office supplies and postage.

I appreciate any help / direction regarding this. - Thanks.

Just looking for ideas and tips so I wont have to be capped to a set hourly rate and so I can be my own boss. I'd also like to know about how much each would cost/loan info, and licenses and such required.

Starting a New Business - Looking for Feedback on the Concept

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 02:24 PM PDT

    Hello all,

After receiving requests from quite a few colleagues and friends I have recently started providing custom spreadsheets for businesses and individuals. These can be as simple or as complicated as need be and seem to be very useful for everyone who has utilized them.

The Idea is that you would describe the process you need automated in text and I would convert it into a custom spreadsheet for you. I would love any feedback you have on anything from the website to the service itself.

    Here is a link to my website;

What kind of deal should I give to a maintenance customer?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT

So i have a customer who gets their windows cleaned quarterly (every 3 mo.) for $400. The initial price was $450. They contacted me and said they want to get their house washer as well from now on (starting next time I go to clean their windows). I quoted this at $5-600. I gave a range because it's been 4 months since I've been there and didn't want to give an exact price till I see it in person again.

What kind of deal should I give this customer that is fair to me and them? This would be a 2 day job. They live about 45 mins away.

They were saying they'd tell their neighbors, etc. I know, I've heard that before... but they live in a super ritsy gated community (one of the nicest neighborhoods I've done work in) near Disney World.

    Capital Contribution to S-Corp?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 02:29 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I need some advices on how to handle the capital contribution. I recently created a s-corp for my business. Before I opened a business bank account, I used my personal credit card to purchase goods to sell instead of using business bank account to make payments. In this case, was this transaction considered as capital contribution although it wasn't in a form of cash contribution? How would we record this kind transaction in the book since the money didn't actually flow from my account to the business account?

Note: I also plan to write another check to put money from my personal account to the business account, so this would considered as capital contribution.

I have had the worst luck with accountants and it baffles me.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 09:19 PM PDT

My company went through three that made serious errors --costly ones.

Why is it so hard to get a good accountant?

We finally found one who is good at what they do, but frankly, they have started to lose the thread; they are expanding into "consulting" and away from their core business. They are slow to respond, not
up on the latest issues in our state/local area, and aren't providing the services we actually need; more like some basic financial planning for the business, advising on HR options. our internal financial planning and forecasting tools are better than theirs, and I don't need them constantly selling me on how to set up my org structure, branding, etc.

Would love to get a new firm. Bonus points if said firm is woman and/or under represented minority run

Auto Repair Shop Improperly Billing Clients and Leaving Tens of Thousands on The Table?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 05:19 PM PDT

    Hello.

I took over running a muscle car restoration shop with multiple long-term projects. Many of those projects are over the initial budget by a significant amount, but it's been so long since the work was performed that I'm afraid the state consumer protection office might get involved if we ask to be paid for what we did.

The work was performed, obvious both upon inspection of the vehicles and of our records, and was performed to a high standard. The previous estimator for the business was clueless as hell and was not misrepresenting estimates out of malice- he was just too stupid and too set in his ways to understand how long things take. He often underquoted labor by hundreds of hours.

    Our problems are:

    • Underestimating the total cost of the restoration
    • Taking too high a percentage of the restoration initially
    • Underestimating the work discovered after the car was torn down to the frame
    • Realizing that once the supply of restorations dries up, so does cashflow- which then slows the rate of purchase of parts, which slows the completion of restoration, which further slows the rate of purchase of parts, which slows the...
    • Bad forecasting that led to things like a radiator being bought for a car that's still in paint while a car that had a rear-end noise couldn't get a new ring and pinion for lack of funds.

Now we're delivering cars, settling bills with clients with goodwill adjustments to try to avoid legal hot water, and our cashflow is often nonexistent. The business feels like the Aral Sea- it was awesome in the seventies but now it's a dying, polluted (figuratively) desert.

How the hell do I begin to bridge the gaps between expectation and reality and avoid courtroom battles we can't even begin to afford while increasing cashflow?
