Fired from my first sales job today! Sales and Selling

Fired from my first sales job today!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:00 AM PDT

Started three months ago at a FinTech company. The plan was to have us work as SDRs for six months and with training, graduate us to an AE position in six months. After two months, the company changed its business model and gave us one month to generate $10K in GP. Shortly after that announcement, my manager quit, three members of the sales enablement team quit, the director of sales quit, then half the SDRs they hired quit. I couldn't do it, now I'm back on the job hunt!

Pretty weird experience to tell you the truth. Anyway, that's my story.

    Not so humble brag

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 01:38 PM PDT

My Q3 is wrapping up this month and I've had the best month/quarter of my career. This will be my first 6 figure months and I'm absolutely psyched, I will be walking into Q4 already at quota for the year. With baby number 2 coming in Dec this is a huge weight off my shoulder. Pandemic aside 2020 had been good for me. Just need to share it somewhere since my friends and family with normal jobs don't get it.

What's the best way to catch an executives attention in an email subject line/linkedin message

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:19 AM PDT

I'm looking for catchy ways to get the attention of executives in the restaurant space, I have a pretty good response rate but my open rate has dropped significantly and would love to hear some ideas.

For reference: I work in a SaaS company selling mobile ordering products to mid-market/enterprise restaurant chains

How much lying do you actually do in your sales role?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:34 AM PDT

You know, becuz salespeople are always seen as liars and swindlers. How much lying do you guys really do in your positions? I can hardly recall doing any lying in any of my jobs that was harmful to the customer.

What KPIs do you have? How do you keep track of them? How often do you check your KPIs?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:43 AM PDT

I'm looking for some inspiration to set my KPIs, so I'd like to know what KPIs are popular, and also ways of keeping track of them. Manually checking seems frustrating, and also it would be nice to have some historical data to compare to, but I want to have as less administration as possible.

Also, how often do you check your KPIs?

    Anyone use LinkedIn voice messaging?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Curious if any of you use LinkedIn's voice mail tool?

I've had people use it on me and found it weird - primarily because I didn't know them lol

I was thinking of using it for my own campaign but not sure if it would be seen as intrusive. It probably will, but it'd definitely capture their attention and make me stand out, what do you guys think?

Or should I stick with voicemails at the end of my calls?

    Your guidance is appreciated

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:06 AM PDT

Four months ago I began a sales role for the first time in my life. In the past four months Ive worked as a sales designer for home improvement projects. My total gross sales were roughly 500k and with finance rejects and no cancellations I grossed around 410. I was converting at roughly 27% of all the leads I went on but in the past 45 days I've been struggling significantly. I have a meeting today with my boss at 5 to bring in all my stuff presumably to be let go. To make matters worse I found out my girlfriend is pregnant last night.

Where do I go from here? Is there anything you think I can do to fight for my job when I go into this meeting at 5? I'm at a complete loss of what to do and with the pregnancy that was unplanned I'm in even more of an emotional state.

Any feedback that you may have will be sincerely appreciated.

    Is this even real?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:18 AM PDT

As I'm sure a few of us have, I've always been taught to be a little skeptical. After months of gruelling applying and many rejections, I seem have come across this https://vendition.com/ . The idea is that they're a bootcamp to train, pay, and place SDR's in the tech space. With "no strings attached" No % taken in salary no payments to join. Is this even real? What are your thoughts?

    Odd email from Benefits Group.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Open Enrollment is November 2 – November 17.

Before you select the plan that's right for you, we want to let you know that you will see an increase next year in the amount you contribute per paycheck towards the cost of your medical coverage if you enroll in the same plan that you are enrolled in today.

Your increase reflects the fact that your compensation has increased since October 2019. At Keep Company Secret, our approach is that as your compensation increases, you may be asked to contribute somewhat more per paycheck towards the cost of your medical coverage.

This year, all employees will also see some increases to the amounts you will be asked to contribute based on care – your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. The Open Enrollment materials sent to your home have more information on the increase in medical plan costs and ways that you can save.

By asking you and your peers to contribute a little more, we can continue to provide and invest in a broad range of benefits for all employees and at a lower overall cost than the majority of other companies like ours. This helps us recruit and retain teammates, and support their wellbeing at work and beyond. We appreciate your role in supporting this philosophy and making it a reality for all.

There are many ways that you can save on healthcare costs throughout the year. We encourage you to review the attached information and to use resources like ____, our Decision Tool, and your Health Assistant to select the right plan for you during Open Enrollment. These tools are provided to help you understand and plan for medical expenses, like exploring pre-tax savings accounts (FSAs).

First day as an AE, frustration until finally booked a demo on last call

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:25 PM PDT

Today was my First real selling day as a full cycle Account executive grinding on calls for hours with a shitty prospecting list. I was having no success, took a 20 minute break cleared my head, ranted to my GF.

I decided I'll make one more call for the day, and I called and I finally booked a demo!!! It's a small account, but such a big win for me on my first day.

The thrill of locking in that demo was well worth the struggle. Gotta keep grinding 🔥

Thinking about taking a medical device/biologics sales job 1099 (only comission) with no outside sales experience basically and only inside sales?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:29 AM PDT

Hey everybody, So, I'm thinking about taking a medical device/biologics sales job 1099 (only comission) with no outside sales experience basically and only inside sales? I had the Zoom interview and the owner of the company was not on camera, but I could hear his voice with the two other regional directors there in view? I'm wondering, if I should be concerned about this, and why did he do this? Is it a red flag? The job is in Southern California around LA/OC areas? I basically have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this opportunity, "if" it doesn't work out because it looks like I'll be able to live with my aunt and uncle in LA and not pay rent? What do you all think about this, and what is your advice? Thank you all so much for all of your time, insight, and assistance. It is all greatly appreciated!!!!! ..... 😊

Linkedin Sales Navigator vs Hunter.io (and email prospecting) for a job search

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:57 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm weighing Linkedin vs Email outreach for a job search. My industry is web development and people including a former sales guy said my chances go way up if I contact people in the company vs passively applying.

People have recommended Linkedin Sales Navigator for prospecting. I have a hard time understanding why. The "✓ 20 InMail messages per month" seems a pittance even if response is quite good on those 20. There must be a research related reason to use this tool.

At the moment I lean towards getting company names from hiring sites, domain-searching them for contact names and email addresses on Hunter.io, and reaching out to 2 or 3 people in the company to try to find the internal recruiter. Then cold emailing him my resume/portfolio site and an invitation for a phone discussion if interested.

Good plan? Or would you consider using Linkedin Sales Navigator for some reason?

Principals I use on cold calls and emails to establish a competitive edge. The echo chamber over at LinkedIn won't understand.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:01 PM PDT

I'm releasing this as a guide into only the Salesborgs discord and here because I respect the honesty of redditors. These concepts are my actual techniques in trying to gain entry to sell software in the tech space, but they can be applied more broadly.

    Vampire Theory

The prospect has to ask you to pitch them. Legend has it that immortal vampires cannot come into your home / cross the threshhold before you invite them in. There's a moment in the call or email where the prospect will ask you to pitch them. Your whole job is to keep the spotlight on the prospect until polarity shifts and they ask the vampire in to bite them.

    Polarity Shifting

The entire space of cold call templates has focused on "The Reason for my call" jab-jab-hook. It's solely focused on the caller, and not the prospects. It causes friction. Your entire goal should be to keep the prospect talking. When applying RRM during Routing and Ruin stages you will feel the polarity shift. You are no longer pushing on a rope. The prospect is now pushing you to sell them. That's when you know you will book a meeting

    Social Aikido

Have you ever seen a 75lb woman flip a 300lb fighter? Aikido and Jiu Jitsu masters use leverage. The bigger they are the harder they fall. Never before in the history of cold calling has someone called the prospect, validated the competitor, and acknowledged the journey with the competition. This translates so rapidly, a recent practitioner had a 51 minute call with the EVP of Sales after reading about RRM.

    English Style

Here's a template used in England by Lee Bartlett:

Hey Daniel - I have a product that's very relevant to your work; do you mind if I tell you a bit about it. We have helped Acme, Beta, and Zeta drive a 46% increase in revenue via real-time algorithmic compression on an ATC basis vs. ALC. When's a good time to talk? Thanks, JM

    Butterfly Theory

"The whole industry is obsessed with making bigger better faster nets to catch the butterflies. Why not instead, create a garden that attracts the butterflies." – Jack Canfield - 100MM 🦋

    Enigma

This is the secret of all consultative selling:

The more enigmatic, the higher the fee

    Pattern Interrupts

Make a list of 50 ways to do something completely different with your email. Examples:

    • No CTA
    • No First Name
    • Start the email with a joke
    • End with an emoji
    • Song lyrics about product or customer
    • Industry based poetry
    • Photoshop customer onto milk carton
    • ...

    Short Uglies

Imagine your email or phone call looking like an ugly sweater. Write in incomplete sentences, funk the grammar, misspell, use abbreviations. Kyle Rasmussen literally hand draws Venn Diagrams and cartoons on a legal pad, snaps a picture with his phone and sends it. We actually sent a picture of Nosferatu (the villain from a silent German film from 1922) to VPs and linked it to my website.

Where should i go with my career?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:37 AM PDT

I'm a 20 year old guy that's been in sales since i was 15. I've been out of a job the last year because of studies.

I currently have 2 job offers. Either, a junior AE role at a large and well established firm. Or an SDR role at a startup with only 3 employees (just got their first investement of 2M USD, and has a big potential)

Off course the salary and benefits are better at the well eatablished firm. But the potential for me to "grow" in the start up is big (since i will be starting the sales team with two other new employees (a manager and another sdr)

Would you play it safe or take the bet?

I built a dashboard that plugs into ANY CRM. Is this useful for sales leaders?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:39 AM PDT

Recently I built a sales dashboard that can plug into any CRM, like Salesforce.

It's designed to make it easy for sales leaders to quickly understand key metrics that are driving growth, as well as report on their open sales pipeline. It can be easily customized without needing a developer, and there are no license fees or hosting costs. That's because it's built on Google Data Studio, a new free alternative to BI tools like Tableau.

In my experience, it can be really tedious to get useful insights from your CRM. It's hard to build nice looking dashboards in Salesforce. Tableau can also be hard to use and the license fees are prohibitively expensive for many companies.

I thought that people in this sub would find this interesting. Especially those who want to build their own reports without having to pay monthly fees.

Please check it out, and let me know if you think this is useful!

    Conversions, KPI, Metrics, Etc.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I'm a SDR/SE hybrid role (I close smaller deals and bigger deals I send out to the actual Sales Executive and work with them on it). Thinking about going into a leadership/management role and was task to talk a bit about what kind of metrics I would want to measure in 2021 to hit goals.

In the past I've taken a look at open to close ratios, cold calls to qualified leads, and everything in between to figure out where we are winning/losing.

What are other conversion rates and metrics I should be thinking about and what data or how do I get there? If there are articles, books, etc. that you can point me to learn more about that would help out tremendously as well.

OTE for AMs? Looking to make a move

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:18 AM PDT

    Hey r/sales,

Am curious for all the AMs out there what your OTE looks like? I'm coming up two years into my current role as an AM, and my previous 3-years were all in tech related outbound sales (hardware, SaaS). I am looking to make a move as my base salary of $60k / $100k OTE just doesn't do it for me now that I am close to 5-years in sales, #1 on the team by % against quota and 240% of annual target for the FY with a full quarter left to go.

What does your pay look like as an AM, breakdown by salary vs OTE? Bonus points if you are in software and are based out of Canada (like I am).

    Cheers,

    Breaking into SAAS

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:14 AM PDT

I thought I had it good with a commission sales job making 110k in the construction industry .... until I came across posts about the SAAS sales salaries in here. The level of potential income is greater in SAAS than it will be in my line of construction.

I am not educated about the SAAS industry, would like to learn. How can one break into the SAAS industry? What are there certain qualifications and a good entry point / position? The goal is to align myself with a company with a great product, learn that product, and grow within to reach a commissioning position

Any help pointing me in the direction of where to look and what type of genre of SAAS companies to look at would be helpful.

I have 6 years of outside b2b sales experience, business degree, but no IT experience.

Balancing B2B and B2C sales and dealing with dealers who won't stick to MSRP?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:26 AM PDT

HELP! I'm a sales manager for a small company that produces small consumer goods. (kept vague on purpose for privacy) We currently do about 30% of our volume through our online store, while we do 70% through retailers and other dealers.

Thing is we make 75% of our profit on the online business and the B2B side is mostly there to give us the volume to keep costs down. It's my job to manage all the of the b2b accounts. We strongly discourage discounting our products and seek out mostly clients that offer our products to customers who wouldn't otherwise know about us. No conflict.

We have a few dealers however who sell online with some discounts online. These dealers put at risk our own online shop and they risk starting a price war with the other ''well behaved'' dealers.

In my country it is illegal to explicitly forbid these dealers from discounting. I can not threaten not to deliver to them for this reason. I can call and ask them nicely to stick to MSRP, that's about it.

Anyone have experience in such a situations and suggestions?

Oh I should mention just to make my life harder, my online marketing manager insists on doing B2C sales 2-3 times a year. The biggest one for black Friday is coming up. The dealers who don't discount are always pissed at me when we do this, and the online marketing manager is always pissed at me when dealers discount. It's driving me a little nuts.

In case it's of importance: we aren't on amazon and we have forbid any of our dealers to sell via Amazon (that's legal and in the contract).

How do you verify your prospect emails quickly?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:24 AM PDT

I am doing a mass prospecting campaign using Outreach and I need a way to quickly verify all the emails I've collected (about 250 lol).

I've used Lusha and Quiklist to build out the lists, but I know at least 25% of the list has invalid emails. It would be easier in the long term for me to just identify which emails will bounce. Does anyone know any online tools for this? Or is there a way to use the above tools to do it for me?

    Thanks
