They swear the tow truck driver was telling the truth and that he cleaned it up. I looked at and inspected the car when it was recovered by the police prior to being towed to collision shop, but was impounded at tow truck company for 2 days. Smell was horrible like smoke and drugs + filth, f'ing tweakers...sure didn't notice a cat, dead or alive. Two days later insurance had it moved from tow company to collision center. Went to look at it tonite and collision employee mentioned cat..??..WTF

I mentioned to adjuster from the beginning that I thought my car was toxic like meth or dope was being smoked in it...now I am told a dead cat exploded in it while being towed....What is the best recourse!? TULSA, OK, Liberty Mutual Insurance

Filing an auto claim AFTER cancelling insurance

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:50 PM PDT

Long story short: I put a dent on my car when a container fell off the top while I was driving. The fender needs replaced. This happened a month ago. I switched insurance companies after it happened and am now trying to get it fixed (the accident happened, I left town and just got back last week).

Can I call my old insurance company who I had at the time and file a claim even though I no longer have insurance with them?

My neighbor’s tree already totaled my car. Two more look like they are about to fall on my garage. Would really appreciate some advice.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:24 PM PDT

    Update: Location is Pennsylvania.

    ——

I live next door to a huge (old growth) wooded property of 40 acres. I've never seen or met my neighbors as their house is nowhere near mine. Their driveway is long and gated, so not welcoming for dropping in with cookies. A year ago, one of their trees fell during a storm and pulverized my car. I was "made whole" with 10k from my insurance company, but it was a bit frustrating because the car was paid off, well cared for, and was only 5 years old, so 10k couldn't purchase me a truly equal used car.

The property sold to new owners a few months ago. I sent them a welcome note (via mail) with a request to also talk about two huge, mostly dead trees that are towering over my garage and part of my bedroom. It's been two months with no response. What is the next best step? I would really love not to pay the full cost of taking down the trees because they are gigantic. I would also love not to be killed by a tree.

I have home owners' insurance (obviously), but my agent said there's not much to be done except if the tree falls, my insurance will deal with it. But seriously, these trees already took out my car, and they could absolutely reach my bed while I'm sleeping.

    Thanks all!

    —-

Edit before anyone points it out: I'm aware I'm not legally allowed to get the trees taken down without permission as they are not on my property.

Do hospital discounts impact my Out-of-Pocket Maximum?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:49 PM PDT

I have an autoimmune disease called NMO and receive an immunosuppressant infusion every 6 months to prevent attacks. Each infusion costs $7,000+ and my out of pocket maximum is currently $8,500, so I always hit my out of pocket maximum.

My question: The hospital offered me a discount if I pay my bill up front, but would this reduce my out of pocket maximum? Do insurance companies track the patient billing or what the patient actually pays? I've always just stuck with a monthly payment plan, since regardless of the discount I'll hit my out of pocket maximum by the end of the year.

    Thank you.

Also, don't get NMO. It sucks - a lot. Take your vitamin D!

    Insuring a Tool/Device for Theft/Damage

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:34 PM PDT

Say I am a freelancer in the Biotech field and I have a Gen-Sequencing machine that would cost like $30,000 to replace or buy new and want to make sure that I am never without it.
Would this just fall under business Insurance?
Is there Item Coverage that ensured it is replaced in case of damage or Theft?

    I was almost carjacked

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:16 PM PDT

I'll try to keep it short. Last Monday I was heading into planet fitness and as I was stepping out of my car when 2 guys ran up to me punching and kicking me and trying to pull me out. I got cut a couple times but I managed to turn my car on and put it in reverse and while backing up I hit another vehicle it was a suv the damage wasn't as bad as the damage on my car. I'm just wondering if my premium goes up since it technically was my fault I can't find anything on it and I haven't called because my phone was stolen. Bos, MA

    Nationwide Pet Insurance (International Coverage)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:18 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

In a few years, I'm considering relocating from LA to Berlin with my 8 year old dog, who is currently enrolled in Healthy Paws insurance. Healthy Paws will not cover international pet visits, and it seems that no German health insurances will take on 9+ year old dogs.

I called Nationwide, and the representative assured me that as long as I have a place of residence in the US (regardless of whether I live and work abroad), my dog should be OK to see any licensed vet.

While this is wonderful news, I have a few friends who suspect that this is in fact *not* allowed, and potentially fraudulent. As much as I love my pup**, I'm not interested in skirting the law** -- does anyone know whether...

    • Nationwide's claim of international coverage (regardless of where a dog's owner is based) is legitimate?
    • And if not, does anyone have suggestions on how to obtain coverage for their aging dog when moving abroad to Germany?

Advice about which direction to take

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:09 PM PDT

Hi all. Thanks in advance for your help. My side mirror was clipped by my apartment's gate today and is hanging on by a thread. The glass is intact, and the motor from the driver-side controls even still works just fine. But the entire assembly is dangling and falling off. My dilemma is, I havent had a ticket or an accident since like 1998, and I really like my insurance rates. I also really dislike my car and would be happy to buy a new one, but my credit is only around 650 so I don't know if that would be possible. Any advice out there from you insurance experts?

Wondering if I can use an insurance check on my car trade in.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:18 PM PDT

So I'm trading in my car but it has some exterior body damage from a side sweep with concrete barrier not bad but there are a dents from that on my passenger side those damages brought my car trade in value from $13000 to $8000 I want to file a claim on the car so the trade in value is more or use the check to payoff the remaining loan on it if possible. My car still has a loan on in it. My question is if I file a claim can the insurance check be made out to the dealership in which Im trading in the car instead of an auto repair shop. Is this even possible? I want to this so I don't have to wait months for my car to be fixed to trade in car. I live in TX

    Florida Blue Child Plans

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:01 PM PDT

Does anyone have one of these? I'm scouting around and can't for the life of me find any prices / plans. My kids qualify for Medicaid for now but due to the shitty care and providers I would be interested in seeing the costs of plans. I was so used to Florida Blue and loved the plan and the care and I don't mind paying for private insurance depending on the cost. It's crappy (understatement) that Medicaid eligible people can't just get a break and get a plan in the marketplace. Hate Florida.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:35 PM PDT

I was rear ended by a drunk driver who was arrested at the scene. I had a broken nose that required surgery, concussion, dizziness, back pain, among other things. I settled with the drunk driver for their max insurance, 25K. I have underinsured motorist with State Farm that is 100 K. It is also stackable up to 300 k on all my cars. I have not consulted a lawyer yet as I do not want to give up 33% of the settlement. My medical bills so far are about 30 K. I have been keeping State Farm up-to-date with all the doctors, explanation of benefits, medical records with ICD codes and my ongoing problems.

Can anyone give me an idea of what range dollarwise to expect? Since I do not have a lawyer (yet), I do not want to be lowballed. Any advice appreciated. Currently I am on medicines for dizziness and pain. I have more appointments and tests scheduled that could take the bill up another couple thousand.

    I am in SC.

Am I covered by my cousin's auto insurance as a "resident relative"?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:56 PM PDT

So I'm living with my cousin in California and I have a DMV behind-the-wheel test in a few weeks.

I was wondering if I'd be covered under his auto insurance (for his vehicle) while I'm still learning to drive, and for the DMV test. I'm not "named" on his insurance policy.

Do I qualify as a "resident relative"? If so, would I automatically get coverage while driving his vehicle?

Looking for advice to further my claims education.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT

I work for a small company and a few months ago I went from being in customer service booking and coordinating orders to being our entire claims department. A position which I am woefully underqualified for. Despite that, it has been going well enough.

Recently the managers have been referring to me to our accounts as 'the claims manager' and I've had the thought if I'm going to be working as a claims manager I might as well know what I'm doing.

Also, presumably this gig isn't going to last forever and I'll be looking for a new job in the future with a number of years of "Claims Manager" under my belt and when that happens I want to be prepared.

An acquaintance of mine recommended getting certified as an adjuster in either New York or Texas. Can someone elaborate on that process? I'm assuming that those are the states that transfer to the most other states verses getting certified in Illinois.

Are there other certifications or classes that are worth pursuing?

Question about Pure Vs. Speculative risk

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:59 AM PDT

Hello. Studying for the insurance exam right now and was wondering if someone could tell me why the government has crop insurance when that is considered speculative as opposed to pure. From what I understand most companies the government included will not insure something if it is speculative because why should you get insured when you stand to make a benefit. I mean flood insurance for example; thats something the government does because most companies dont like insuring disasters but its still a pure risk. Just wondering.

Car lease - my name is on the insurance along with my wife for her car, but the new car I'm about to lease can't processed by in the insurance co. until tomorrow. Can I still drive the car home tonight?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:36 PM PDT

Further context: I had a car on our insurance until March when my lease expired. That car was removed from the lease, so it's currently just my wife's car (which we are both insured under/both can drive) on the contract. I am about to sign a new lease contract tonight, but if the insurance can't process it until tomorrow, can I still drive the car back home tonight?

    Healthy Paws vs. Nationwide

[Canada, Alberta] Commercial truck struck my parked car - I want it repaired, not replaced

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:11 PM PDT

A company's commercial vehicle damaged my legally parked car. Company is 100% at fault.

I definitely want my vehicle restored to pre-damaged condition. Will the company's third party liability insurance cover the full repair cost? Or, is the limit to their repair cost the "value" of my vehicle, and they'll write me a cheque for this value instead if it is lower? It's an older vehicle but I have a lot of upgraded equipment I have added myself, so I want any assessment of my car's worth to factor this in to ensure a fair shake.

Opinion request: Does my personal Auto policy exclude coverage for side business delivery?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:07 AM PDT

Hi all, My wife has a side home bakery business and very infrequently delivers across town, or sets up as a vendor at an event, and uses her personal vehicle. I'm trying to determine if my policy would exclude coverage in the event that she gets in an accident while delivering cupcakes or on her way to an event.

My Allstate agent is pretty vague (but I like Allstate so I stick around) and all he said was that we should be good as long as there's not a delivery charge and that we don't use the vehicle for more than 50% business purposes.

Could I trouble any of you to comment if you agree or disagree with this, based on my policy exclusions? My policy exclusions for bodily injury and liability read as follows:

    Thank you in advance!

    Exclusions—What Is Not Covered

We will not pay for any damages an insured person is legally obligated to

    pay because of:

    1. bodily injury or property damage resulting from the ownership,

maintenance or operation, loading or unloading of the insured auto by

any person as an employee of the United States government, while

acting within the scope of such employment. This exclusion applies only

if the provisions of the Federal Tort Claims Act, as amended, require the

Attorney General of the United States to defend that person in any civil

action or proceeding which may be brought for the bodily injury or

    property damage.

    1. bodily injury or property damage arising out of the operation of an

insured auto while operated to carry persons or property for a charge,

or the operation of any auto an insured person is driving while available

for hire by the public. This exclusion does not apply to shared-expense

car pools. This exclusion does not apply to the occasional rental of your

insured motor home or travel-trailer to others for personal operation if a

rental premium is shown on the Policy Declarations for this coverage.

    1. bodily injury or property damage arising out of auto or motor vehicle

business operations such as repairing, servicing, testing, washing,

parking, storing or selling of autos or motor vehicles. However, this

exclusion does not apply to you, resident relatives, partners or

employees of the partnership of which you or a resident relative are a

partner, when using your insured auto.

    1. bodily injury or property damage arising out of the operation of a nonowned

auto in any business or occupation of an insured person.

However, this exclusion does not apply while you, your chauffeur, or

domestic servant are operating an auto or trailer.

    1. bodily injury or property damage arising out of the ownership,

maintenance, or operation of a motor vehicle with less than four wheels.

    1. bodily injury to an employee of any insured person arising out of or in

the course of employment. This exclusion does not apply to your

domestic employee who is not required to be covered by a worker's

    compensation law or similar law.

    1. bodily injury to a co-worker injured in the course of employment. This

exclusion does not apply to you.

    1. bodily injury to any person related to an insured person by blood,

marriage, or adoption and residing in that person's household.

    1. damage to or destruction of property an insured person owns,

transports, is in charge of, or rents. However, a private residence or a

garage rented by that person is covered.

    1. bodily injury or property damage intended by, or reasonably expected

to result from, the intentional or criminal acts or omissions of an insured

person. This exclusion applies even if:

    a) an insured person lacks the mental capacity to control or govern

    his or her conduct;

    b) an insured person is temporarily insane or temporarily lacks the

mental capacity to control or govern his or her conduct or is

temporarily unable to form any intent to cause bodily injury or

    property damage;

    c) such bodily injury or property damage is of a different kind or

degree than intended or reasonably expected; or

    d) such bodily injury or property damage is sustained by a different

person than intended or reasonably expected.

This exclusion applies regardless of whether an insured person is

actually charged with, or convicted of, a crime.

This exclusion precludes coverage for any insured persons under the

policy regardless of whether the person seeking coverage participated in

any way in the intentional or criminal acts or omissions.

    1. bodily injury or property damage which would also be covered under

nuclear energy liability insurance. This applies even if the limits of that

    insurance are exhausted.

    1. bodily injury or property damage arising out of the participation in any

    prearranged, organized, or spontaneous:

    a) racing contest;

    b) speed contest; or

    c) use of an auto at a track or course designed or used for racing or

    high performance driving;

or in practice or preparation for any contest or use of this type.

Is there anything we should know before calling the insurance, they say they have reimbursement rights. There is also still about 5k left over in bills that we where going to pay of with some of the money.

    Uninsured bodily injury limits

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:53 AM PDT

    Hi,

I currently have progressive with 50k uninsured bodily injury limit. I was thinking of increasing it. But, wanted some advice on it. From my understanding, this coverage is needed for my hospital bills if an uninsured or under insured hits me.

I currently have excellent health insurance through my employer, with an OOP max at 2800. So, if I get into one of these accidents, does my health insurance not pay for the hospital bills? Do I really need a higher uninsured bodily injury limit?

I've set the PIP to 2500. Nobody else ever sits in my car either.

Also, My liability is set to 500k combined single limit. Was planning on reducing this to 300k and getting an umbrella. Any thoughts?

I'm in Texas, if that matters.
