My Fiancé rear-ended someone two years ago, but now, they are suing her.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:49 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

First post here so I apologize if I am not doing it correctly. My fiancé (24F at the time) was in a minor accident 2 years ago (almost to the day..) where the sun blinded her vision and she accidentally rear-ended a lady. The lady(much older) didn't suffer much car damage and even reassured my fiancé that she was okay. But moments later, the lady seemed to want to go into an ambulance. A few weeks later, Geico (fiancé's insurance) is involved, but absolutely nothing happened. They weren't notified about a claim moving forward and my fiancé never heard back from geico. Fast forward to today, the lady is now claiming she is permanently disabled and is trying to take my fiancé (directly, not through insurances) to court. Can someone explain how this is possible? My fiancé spoke to geico today and they had NO idea they were seeking damages and suing my fiancé. They're going to get an adjuster involved, though. Any tips or advice is extremely helpful.

Edit #1: This happened in NJ; Bergen County.

    AAA good student discount

Do they check grades? I'm allowed to send in unofficial transcripts and I will change it if needed. Also I know that they accept signatures from school officials verifying that I have a 3.0 and is a full time student. Should I just do the signature instead? I really need help and advice.

Out of the normal insurance type jobs?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:55 AM PDT

I'm a recent finance graduate with a focus in risk management & insurance. Like everyone else i'm struggling to get insurance related work.

Most insurance companies job postings near me have been Computer science/IT orientated. Which makes sense as we are in pandemic, and not much can be done.

So now I am thinking of working in a hospital setting! Does anyone know or have a job in a hospital setting that revolves around insurance/Risk? If so could you elaborate on that job?

I'm currently at my wits end trying to find some entry level job that is not claims (due to a recent disability I can't hold a claims jobs due to my inability to inspect damages effectively in person) any advice will help.

Some side notes about me: I really love reviewing benefits plans and explaining each one in depth. Also love identifying key risk factors that may be overlooked by others.

    Thanks!

    21yo Dependent and EOBs

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:46 AM PDT

Hello, I am 21F looking to get a certain type of birth control that is fully covered by my insurance (Cigna). My parents are evangelical Christians, and if they find out there is a chance that I could be in danger of homelessness.

I have already researched confidential communications requests and the like, but my main worry is with the online account.

Is there any way that I can have Cigna hide or withhold my EOB information from my father online?

Edit: I live in Texas and I have my own patient portal for Cigna.

I was involved in an auto accident in my girlfriend's parents car. Need some clarity

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:44 AM PDT

Hi guys. Last weekend, I was involved in a head-on fender bender accident where I was driving my girlfriend's Dad's car. No one was injured thankfully but there is probably around 7-10k in damages (4-5k on our car and less on the other). He is from New York and he loaned us the car for a week to drive back to Virginia so that we could move my stuff out of my apartment into a storage unit since my lease is ending. I am wondering if there would be any issues going through the parent's (owners of the car) insurance. I did some googling and I think I'd be covered as a 'permissive user' but I figured I should post here in case there are any complications with us being out of state and whatnot. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Need Advice Please!

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:30 PM PDT

A month ago, I was pulling out of my parking spot at my apartment and backed into a parked car behind me. Very little damage, no dent just a scratch. I waited for a while, but left a note since it happened right in front of my apartment door. Turns out they're my neighbor. They text me back and they said they'd eventually get an estimate, but it shouldn't be that much because it was just a light scratch. We agree not to file a police report or file a claim. They text me today saying that the estimate cost around $1.5K. I took pictures of the car, and they're just as shocked as I am about how much it costs. They're not upset with me, but I filed a claim with my car insurance today now.

I am obviously extremely anxious about this whole situation, I realize now I made many mistakes but I am hoping I did everything I could at this point. Is that the case?

    Edit: in TN

Confused about insurance/repair process for car repairs

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:25 PM PDT

EDIT: I am in California in the United States.

I'm not sure if my explanation is going to make any sense because I just feel really lost about how to go about getting my car repaired with my insurance covering it.

My car was recently broken into. They broke the front passenger window and ripped off the panel on my rear passenger door.

I contacted my insurance company (Travelers) to file a claim. They said it would be covered after my deductible, asked me where I wanted to have it repaired, OK'd my response (the usual dealership I use for service) and sent someone to make an appraisal. They made an appraisal, emailed it to me and told me to hand that to where I got it repaired.

I scheduled an appointment and brought my car in. The dealership charged me $150 to do their own appraisal. This had been mentioned on the phone and it sounded reasonable and I figured if their appraisal differed, they and my insurance would hash it out.

However, on the dealership end the guy who's been handling my car called me back and have me an estimate nearly triple the insurance and assumed I was going to take my car back without repairs. He mentioned the labor estimate being especially low, and when I looked at the insurance appraisal it listed only 0.5 hours for labor which seems ridiculous. He cited 'non-standard' parts as well driving up the costs.

I'm very confused how to interpret this. If my insurance is quoting non-standard parts in their appraisal and non-standard parts are more expensive, then why is their appraisal lower? Is it typical for insurance to only cover if non-standard parts are used or is it possible for me to get them to cover standard parts? Do I need to insist on the dealership talking to my insurance about this? The guy who's been handling my car there has been really terse and has acted like the insurance stuff is irrelevant to the process. I can't tell if it's because it's not usual for there to be dialogue between whoever is doing the repairs and insurance or if he's just being lazy (I haven't had a bad experience before at this place).

I've tried to get back in touch with my insurance but haven't heard back.

This is the first time I've needed insurance to cover damage and I just don't know how this process works. I don't want to keep taking my car new places only to pay large fees to get the damaged appraised again and then find out it differs from my insurance's appraisal and so on. The process can't be this expensive and time consuming just to get repairs done with insurance coverage, can it?

Health insurance cancelled without notice until I prove I’m still married.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:07 PM PDT

My husband and I have been married for 6 years. We have health insurance though his employer. We just received a letter stating my insurance coverage was cancelled until I provide proof that we are still married. We had previously sent our marriage license years ago. They stare they are doing a company wide audit.

They will not take our marriage license since they "already have it". We do not have a joint bank account and we file married but separate on our taxes. (These are items they are requesting) They suggested a lease. However, it has to have been signed within the last 6 months. We are one year in on a two year lease.

So now what?! What do I do? They state our taxes have to be filed as joint to count. I suggested we go open an account together but they want it to be older than 6 months. I'm at a loss. I work in health care and I am very uncomfortable not having health insurance. I'm also very frustrated that I have to prove we are married.

They apologized for the cancellation without previous notification and blames it on Covid.

    Please help!

Grey area I don’t understand when privately purchasing a vehicle.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:47 PM PDT

So, whenever you buy a vehicle in my state, (ky), you have to have proof of insurance before you buy the vehicle. Well, to me that seems like a decent chance to pay for insurance you won't even use, if the seller backs out at the last minute. It just doesn't seem practical to me.

Another question about cancelling. Say I have a car with a policy, and I sell it, won't cancelling the policy hurt my insurance right then?

Are there any websites that will do a mass quote of all of the possible auto insurance companies?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:26 PM PDT

Looking to switch auto insurance in 20-35 days. Is there a handy website or an independent insurance broker in Indy that can quote the majority of auto insurance companies available in the Indy area?

I've tried Gabi, Jerry.ai, and two different local agents. Same5-6 results from every agent... Gabi have one more than the rest... But I'm tied of filling out 15-20 insurance company quote requests every 6 months.

[FL] Got in a car accident. Other party claiming it didn't happen.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:58 PM PDT

So I'm dumb. Got into a car accident a few weeks ago. I was rear ended at a stoplight. Damage wasn't too bad (minor scratches and dents) so I didn't call the cops or the insurance company. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug. I did however get a picture of her insurance card.

Fast forward a week after the accident, I'm having neck pain still. I go to an urgent care and hand them my health insurance card and tell them what happened. They told me they couldn't take my health insurance because it was a car accident. So I filed a claim with the other person's insurance company as well as my own for the PIP.

Well there was no damage to the other car and apparently the driver was the insured's son's girlfriend. They're now claiming it didn't happen

The only proof I have of the accident is a picture of their insurance card, with their registration somewhat visible under the card, with my license plate and one of the dents in the background.

So, uh, how screwed am I?

    Independent contractor and liability

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:14 PM PDT

So I have an arborist who wants to hire me as an independent contractor for a tree company. I asked about liability and workers compensation and they do not have either to cover me. I have regular health insurance on my own that is $8,150 deductible. Are there any good liability and workers comp insurance providers for someone like me? All I can find seem to just provide for contractor businesses. Would I qualify as a business?

    Provable fraud on insurance claim

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:00 AM PDT

    State of Maine

My wife spun out on some snow last spring 2019. She damaged a concrete step on a building while driving her father's truck. His insurance paid their insurance and it was all set. Now we are receiving notice from a law firm representing their insurance company seeking the rest of the damages in the claim.

We all thought this was over and done with months ago, my wife and her father having dealt with it and not involved me. With the recent letter she has asked me to handle it from here, so I have talked to the insurance rep for my father in law and he is talking with the insurance company to arbitrate it and get it finished.

In reading through the claim, and a quick trip to google maps I have evidence that the claimant committed insurance fraud and claimed damage that was pre-existing prior to the accident. What can I do with this new information? Can I get in trouble if I drop off proof to the claimant and suggest they drop the matter?

TLDR. Long saga of minor accident still unresolved but have proof of insurance fraud. What do I do?

My insurance won't cover fertility treatments. Is it possible to "upgrade" my current insurance, or do I need a new insurance?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Based in California. Currently, I have primary and secondary PPO health insurance through Anthem Blue Cross, one from my employer and the other from my spouse (we work at the same company, so that's why I have the same insurance twice). Having secondary insurance saved my bacon when I needed an emergency surgery earlier this year. However, I'm needing to meet with a fertility specialist now, and found out that my insurance doesn't cover the costs.

I'm probably going to meet with the fertility specialist fairly regularly for the next several months and get some expensive procedures done, so I'm thinking I'll probably want insurance for it. But I don't know how this works-- can I "upgrade" my insurance to cover that? Or does it require a life event? Or should I even get new insurance if I already have a primary and secondary/only need to meet with the specialist for possibly only a few months?

I'm really bad at insurance terms so if someone could ELI5 that would be awesome lol...

    Thank you so much!!

Buying a car through an American company in Canada

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:59 PM PDT

Hi, I'm trying to buy a third car and if I were to buy it normally, it would automatically make my son the primary driver causing the insurance rates to be extreme. I own a business in the US and live in Canada, so is it possible for me to buy a car for business in Canada and have it under my business and not making my son be the primary driver? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Diminished value in car accident with uninsured motorist

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:49 PM PDT

I was hit by a car recently and sorting through the financials of the situation. The other driver came around a curve, slipping and swerving all over the road. I avoided most of his car spinning out, but he crashed into my driver-side rear wheel. It caused substantial damage to my 2017 SUV, which had never been in an accident before and has less than 30k miles. My car had to be towed as it wasn't driving, but the 2000 Corolla that hit me drove home after being ticketed with speeding and driving without insurance.

Luckily I have uninsured motorist protection on my insurance policy. Does this mean it'll be more/less/same amount of difficulty to get my insurance company to pay me for the diminished value to my fairly new car? Can anyone recommend a third party claims adjuster to assess the loss of value? How much can I expect that assessment to cost? I image my insurance company will send the expenses to collections for the at-fault driver, who I'm assuming doesn't have much money if he was driving around without insurance to begin with. Will his no-insurance status make it more challenging for me to get diminished value? Or is it in-turn easier because there isn't an opposing insurance company to negotiate with? My insurance adjuster confirmed I'm not at-fault and I shouldn't expect an increase to my policy premium.

Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this and provide any tips on ensuring nothing essentially comes out of my pocket as someone who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks!

Edit: Appreciate the feedback! I'm in the state of Washington.

Do I have to have flood insurance?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:39 PM PDT

Located in WV. In 2016 there was a thousand year flood event. Flash forward to last year we bought some property is now what is considered a flood plain but was not pre-2016. We paid for the property in cash and it was just some acreage with a garage on it. Well some luck happened on our part and we scored a cabin (think slightly bigger than a tiny home). We moved it to our property last weekend. It's on block, so it's higher than the flood plain. We owe nothing on the property or cabin, it's just our weekend get away and not a primary home. My question is, because it's in a flood plain am I legally required to have flood insurance despite not having any loans on the property/cabin?

Slight fender bender am I doing it right?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:35 PM PDT

Hello, A few days ago my bf got into a slight fender bender driving my car. We have insurance and he is a covered driver. Anyway, we pulled to a lot. Exchanged info and i took pictures of the cars damage, she didn't. Call the police. I have the accident report. I called my insurance to give them a heads up but I was told they'll call me once someone filrs a claim. Not much car damage as I took the brunt of it.

Its been a few days but I haven't heard anything. How long do you think I'd have to wait? Also, do you know how I can see a copy of the accident report without having to spend $10? No sense in paying g if we were at fault.

Oh and thank you for the forum. This is a great sub.

[FL - Flood Insurance] Agent claims that we don't need to include our lender on our claim, adjuster disagrees, who is right?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:47 PM PDT

During Hurricane Sally my house in Florida flooded and, thankfully, we had purchased flood insurance on the property even though it wasn't required by our mortgage company. After the storm, we submitted a claim with our flood insurance provider and this morning the insurance sent out a third party adjuster to assess the damage. He requested a recent mortgage bill, which we provided, and also claimed that we needed to contact our insurance agent and instruct her to add our mortgage information to the policy/claim in order to prevent a delay in payment. I did just that this afternoon, however, my insurance agent said that the "house is in a preferred risk zone" and that the "mortgage did not require flood insurance". Furthermore, she claimed that she "NEVER include[s] the mortgage in this situation to save time on the claim check / payment."

After thinking about it, I'm inclined to side with my agent, why should the lender be involved in a process that they didn't require in the first place? In any case, I'm left in the middle wondering who is right - the agent or the adjuster. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Driving without Nationwide Smartride device plugged in

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:01 PM PDT

    Hi,

I drive around with a Nationwide Smartride device plugged in, while still on my testing period. I'm thinking of unplugging it for a big trip coming up. I couldn't find anything, but wanted to verify here; if I get into an accident while the device is unplugged, they won't or can't invalidate my insurance, right? Will they see the difference in mileage after the facts and account for that?

    Cheers
