How much are you paying for your employees COVID-19 tests? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:42 PM PDT I just got a bill for my first one and it cost $375 in total. WTF EDIT: Just to be really crystal clear. I don't mind paying for tests and time off for our employees. This allows us to stay in operation and help our employees/customers. However, the government is leaving small businesses out to dry. How do you keep track of all the "paperwork" and deadlines? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:07 PM PDT I am considering starting a business (having art markers and pens manufactured), but I am a little intimidated by all the legal deadlines and "paperwork". I used to have an Etsy shop and I found it difficult to remember to renew my PO Box and file my semi-annual taxes. Provided, it was a pretty small scale operation, so it wasn't exactly on my mind on the daily - I'm sure I would have prioritized organization if it was a more serious business venture. Does anyone else struggle with this stuff? How do you keep your business organized? Tips? [link] [comments] |
I have $20,000 available to grow my business, but no clear idea how to use it. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:08 AM PDT I started a hot sauce business this year that kinda picked up and has had somewhat steady sales for a few months. Now I have access to some extra funds and I would like to help my business grow, but I don't have a clear business plan or idea on how to use the money to help it. I know $20k is not a lot of money so I want to use it wisely rather than blow right throw it. Any and all advice will be highly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Should I start a business or not? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:32 AM PDT I currently have a full-time job that brings in plenty of income for my family. A few months ago, I started selling my Excel services on a freelancing website and had great success up until a few weeks ago. My listing on this website changed rankings because of a change in seller status (promoted). Now, my orders have dropped so I am in search of ways to drive in business. I was initially going to go down the route of sharing through social media, sharing on forums, etc, but now I am considering offering my Excel freelancing services outside of of the freelancing website. Do I build a website for funneling traffic to my listing on the freelancing website? Do I build a messaging and invoicing system within my own website? Should I get a business license and create a business? I am just looking for some advice on where to head from here. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

starting personal training studio Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:13 AM PDT Starting a personal training studio Hi, I'm 22 Y/O and thinking of starting a small personal training studio. The idea is a flexible pay as you go exclusive space for freelance/self-employed fitness professionals to train their clients. Bookable by the hour as and when you want. With no fixed gym contract/ commitment or rent. The idea came to me during the lockdown period- I bought some equipment for my garage ( power rack, adjustable dumbbells, adjustable bench and olympic bar and plates) and all of my friends really enjoyed working out there opposed to the gym which was obviously closed at the time. I myself have no personal training experience but have a few friends who are PT's and said they'd be interested in trying out the idea. I've done some research and have found a gym that offers this nearby, charging £15 an hour slots to personal trainers, via an online booking system. I'm just looking for some advice and open to peoples opinions on whether this could work or if they have any advice? I have £20,000 saved up to spend on equipment and rent etc. Thanks for reading! Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:59 PM PDT I had a good year with my business even with everything going on in 2020. I'm looking to take the next step in my business and purchase a big piece of equipment for my shop. I just feel like I should wait to see what happens with the election and COVID-19 before I do. Anyone else have the same feeling or I'm I overthinking it? [link] [comments] |
Buying a commercial condo unit Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:00 PM PDT My small business owns a condo unit in MA that we occupy. An opportunity has come up to purchase a second unit, and I am debating the best way to go about it. I do not have the cash to buy it outright, and I believe an LLC or other corporation would need 2 years in existence to qualify for a loan. So, what are my options outside of purchasing the property under my current business? It is tenant occupied, so it would just be an investment vs. additional space for my company and will have nothing to do with our normal course of business. To that end, I do have concerns about not having another entity to provide protection. [link] [comments] |
Question: Possible Client Scam in Process? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:35 PM PDT Hello all, long time lurker. For the past year I've been operating a video production company. It's pretty small, only myself and one other person occasionally being contracted. I received an email from a potential client the other day about an event they wanted done later in the year. Sounds normal, they gave me their requirements and I gave them an estimate. They said the estimate was very fair and affordable (sub $10,000) and said they could make a deposit of a few thousand as a down payment. I agreed as I normally would, they signed the SOW and I figured I just closed on a new high paying client. I then got an email which had similar wording to a scam I had a few months ago.. It said that they needed a favor, and needed to add an extra $4,000 to the invoice as they were having problems with their event planner not being able to take credit card payments. They asked if they could give me the card info, charge it, then wire transfer or cashiers check the money to their planner. I thought no way, this sounds exactly like a scam I had months ago where we got to this point, they asked for a favor about sending extra money to me and then I send the extra to someone else via CashApp, etc. I ignored that one months ago and then I have yet to reply to this email. Fast forward now a few hours later, and they text me saying they have made a full payment for the total invoice amount. I go and check Wave which I use for invoicing and bookkeeping, and low and behold there is a bank transfer which is currently processing for that invoice made in the full amount. My question is, how will this get turned around on me if it is a scam? Can they do a chargeback on a bank transfer? And if they do, they aren't gaining anything. The email made me concerned but depending on if the transfer is successful (says it could take a max of 7 days) how could this mess me up? I'm thinking of calling the bank possibly tomorrow to see if it is real? I don't know much about bank transfers and stuff as I don't traditionally use them, so any help on showing me the end game for this possible scam would be beneficial. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:27 PM PDT I read an article about cell phone recycling business and I have never really thought of it as a small business. Does any of the members of this group do that? What do you think about it? Does it come with a lot of headaches and heartaches? Is it an investment heavy business? I can put in as many hours as needed since I have a lot of time on my hand. Just worried about the investment part. [link] [comments] |

What questions would you have when hiring a company to manage your marketing, website, and I.T.? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:04 PM PDT I am redoing a couple of pages on my company's website due to low conversion. I won't link the website since we are not looking to promote the business/get new customers. Instead, we just want to know what questions you would like answered when you are hiring an agency to manage your marketing, website, and I.T. (phones, computers, security cameras, data backups, etc.). There are employees who each have their own specialty and we work with several freelancers to fill in the gaps. Edit: Reworded to make clear this is a team of people who each have years of experience in their specialty. [link] [comments] |
Local delivery grocery service Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:14 PM PDT Hey all! So recently I've been looking into starting a grocery delivery service local to me and would love some feedback and advice! To give a little context, I live in a place with a total population of about 168,000. There currently are no existing grocery delivery services available, so it'll be a new service with no competitors. Also, there aren't any big name chains here (Walmart, Whole Foods, Costco, Target - none at all), so grocery stores are locally owned/smaller chains which might be good for working contracts out. I don't have any formal business education, so I was hoping some of y'all could help put into perspective how difficult this might be, how much it may cost to start, what legal stuff i would have to do, etc. Thanks in advance! Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:35 PM PDT Customers have been on boarded and explained where they go for assistance and who to reach out for. This does not stop them from using the autodialer to reach almost any department to ask a ticket related question. How can this be fixed? [link] [comments] |
What are some free or cheap ways to get a reliable business phone number for my business? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:12 PM PDT I've checked into a lot, freedompop, textnow, textfree, talku, dingtone, and going through their reviews I can see a variety of problems with them. I've also heard of twilio, but I think it's for developers and I'm not a developer. I'm also in Canada so I can't use google voice, which only gives a free number for the US. Are there any free or cheap ways to get a reliable business phone number for calling and receiving calls? [link] [comments] |
SBA loan help /are there any loans programs? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT Hello? I just created my llc. I was gonna apply for the SBA loan I guess it was called the eidl one? But it says they're not doing it anymore. They also said they're not doing the ppp one either but that wouldn't help as I'm the only "employee" for my llc anyways I'm wondering is there any loans or grants or programs that I can apply for etc; The SBA loan seemed so good. Up to 30k loan with 30 year term. Anything at all that I can get? [link] [comments] |
Does anyone use a personal attorney to help hire and watch over other attorneys? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT I've gotten to a point where several of my business interests are in different fields that I need specialty attorneys however I always feel like I end up getting screwed one way or another by attorneys that over-sell and under-deliver, push billable hours, etc.. I have considered hiring a "personal" attorney who basically handles the small day-to-day stuff and then is responsible for working with specialty attorneys to make sure we are getting gouged.. I feel like even with the added attorney bill it would probably save some money in the long run and am curious to hear if anyone else does this or knows others that do? [link] [comments] |
A Question For Small Business Owners Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:21 PM PDT Hello all, I'm new to this sub so please kindly correct me if anything is against the rules or if I'm in the wrong sub. I recently had an idea for an app to help local businesses in my area. I was not (still not) a programmer and had never written a single line of code in my life. Since then (1-2 months ago) I started learning Swift and iOS programming. I'm now wondering if this idea of mine is worth pursuing. Here's the idea: an app that helps both users and local businesses. It helps users browse, search and discover small businesses in their area with access to information such as hours, menus, photos, location and etc. It helps local businesses by allowing them to advertise their business and write/edit their own information to ensure accuracy. I'm hoping this will help businesses that don't have websites. I'm also considering of adding a positive review system that lets users choose from a variety of options such as friendly staff, clean space, etc. This would be an alternative to Yelp's review system where a few bad reviews or one-star reviews could have a negative impact on a business. This could be a very simple app that is tailored to my local community, or it could be a very complex app that uses your location to find businesses near you. Here's the question: would an app like this be helpful? Is this idea worth pursuing and implementing? Any other comments, questions or feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Promotion through current popular social media? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:12 PM PDT Hi Guys! I am an owner of a small etsy store that I want to start up my own business through, but I am struggling in drawing a crowd of people that are interested in my products. I make art items such as paper art that I then frame. But I am struggling to promote my store. I have been considering making a TikTok and promoting via that, does anyone have any tips for promoting their business via social media!? [link] [comments] |
Looking for partners and business idea for a SAAS application Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:29 PM PDT I have had this in the back of my mind for quite a long time. I had a chance to talk with a startup CEO privately for 2 hours a few months ago who his company acquired from a multibillion-dollar company. The most important thing for me is that I can sell the product immediately with some proof and there is a market for the product. SWOT Analysis - Personal: Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats
Personal background: I have been a software engineer for more than 10 years, I have even managed 3 multiple teams of 6-7 people for a while, also Led a remote team in Asia while I was in Canada. I have two masters, one in Management and another in Computer Science. I have worked with middle-size companies in the US and create scalable applications that can support even 40K requests per min. I have very handy knowledge of Reactjs (Frontend), Node.js (backend), Databases (Postgres, Mongo, Redis), Cloud computing (Amazon AWS), and the Testing Frameworks.I am looking for sharp, honest, and enthusiastic individuals that are hungry for the opportunity to cover my weaknesses. It is quite important for me to find a niche market where we get assurance that we can sell the product even before designing and developing the MVP. If you have a business or company which is facing some problems and challenges that could be resolved with software as a service (SAAS) in cloud computing, I would love to hear from you. Anything works! A little bit about my personal information. I am in the early 30, not married without any kids. I have lived and worked in 4 different countries from Asia, Europe, and Europe. I have been in Canada for the past 6 years. Besides partners, I do not have a concrete idea yet. I need a product that I can sell it to the customers even without having the MVP version yet. Do you have to see any problems and difficulties anywhere that can be solved with a SAAS application? Or where do you suggest to look for it? Please feel free to shoot me a message about your idea or comments below. I would love to hear from your technical and professional backgrounds and if possible you share with me some SWOT table like the one I shared about yourself. Or if you have some idea where I can find some partners and ideas. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Clothing brand - help needed! (Possible to do small scale or put the money down for large scale?) Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:27 PM PDT How do I go about printing T-shirt's? I have some great designs and a lot of people have shown interest in them but the websites I have used to send me samples usually have the label inside of the T-shirt manufacturer (Gildan, fruit of the loom...). I don't want this and unless there is a printing place that allows me to change this in my country, UK, England. (I've had problems with customs charges from Europe) I'll have to go with a factory 100 T-shirt's minimum approach. Which isn't ideal for me as I don't have that much capitol, even though I have had offers from family/friends that they will loan me the money although I've never been one to spend money I don't have. So two questions: Does anyone know any places that I can put my design on a T-shirt AND create my own label? (super bonus points for being able to add my own price/brand tag) If not what is the process of going the industrial(?) route and getting them all made in a factory?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Advice on getting more private music students. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:41 AM PDT Are there any private music teachers on this sub? I think I have decided that having a private lesson studio is my long term career route. I have a degree in music, I worked at an educational non-profit for 4 years, and I think this is the perfect mix of those two worlds. I actually love teaching and music is so much fun to work with people on. Along with that, I love the lifestyle of being self-employed and want to continue. Plus, teaching lessons over zoom has opened a whole new world of possibilities. I started a little over a year ago and I am up to 6 students but I want to get up to between 12-15. Typically when I get someone through the door, they really enjoy and stick with the lessons. Now I just want to increase the number. Any advice on where and how to reach out to get more students? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
