Career change, graduated at 30, and a few months into public accounting.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 07:43 PM PDT

I decided to change careers from commissioned sales to accounting. I went back to school at 27 while working, being married, and raising kids. I don't talk much about how difficult it was to "balance" everything because I know so many people have it worse. I just wanted to take a moment to say that it freaking sucked and I worked my butt off to keep it all together. I used to wake up hours before my family so that I could go to the living room and cry without them seeing me. I finally graduated double majors with a 4.0. I thought that was the tough part.

Now I'm trying to learn my new position as an auditor at a small firm and I feel like I'm constantly making mistakes. On top of that I'm studying for the CPA exams and taking care of my family.

My life is amazing and I love it, but dang it it's hard right now.

It feels good to express this. I tend to keep my frustration bottled up.

    Thanks.

Some partners are really bloody out of touch

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 02:01 AM PDT

Jesus I'm attending a b4 training session in VN and gosh some of the partners. They said shit like:

"You are young, you can afford to work hard"

    "You don't really need sleep"

"Not only will you have to work 8 hrs a day, but you might even have to work 10 or 12 hours a day".

One partner made a "joke" and said "you will have to work 16 hours a day! Just kidding, it's more like 10-12?????" How the fuck is it suppose to be funny?

And then they have the fucking audacity to ask "why are you all looking so low-energy?". They paid us shit, told us that we'll have to become slave, and ask why we don't look excited to hear those shit? How fucking delusional are these guys?

    Fuck these people, tbh.

Sorry, I just needed to rant.

    Genuinely need some advice

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 04:48 PM PDT

I have just reached the 1 year mark at the big 4 and I feel like I've hit a wall. This work from home situation is absolutely killing me and I feel like I am completely unproductive. I can honestly say I work better in a office setting since I feel I am held accountable when I'm around other people working. I am working on controls documentation for the first time since I have started and I constantly feel like I'm doing it wrong. I have a good relationship with my team, but communication and help is sparse. I hate not having someone show my how to do something in person. It bothers me so much that I have been thrown an entirely new thing without any guidance and it makes me wonder how people above me actually think the work will be done correctly?!

Also just to vent, fuck controls documentation. It's the dumbest most mind numbing shit. Walkthroughs are a total joke. Like why even do one if we don't actually walk through anything?!

How are pension obligations effecting new partners?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:32 PM PDT

With the boomers pulling there usual trick of stealing everything on there way out I'm curious how new partners are faring. I'm assuming partners are giving themselves generous pensions when they leave the firm. Does this negatively effect new partners.

How to keep morale high while WFH?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:51 PM PDT

I feel like I am in a tiny compartment. I know nothing about what others are doing. Only the managers and up have their group meetings - information then trickles down to the staff.

The only person I talk to is my manager (with the exception of one coworker I'm very close to), who barely lets me get a word in. I feel like I'm losing my communication skills. I cannot even ask someone on another team a question for learning purposes (related to work but unrelated to my daily job) without fear of my manager eventually getting cc'd on the email. She'll question why I'm asking and spending time on something unrelated to my daily work (and why I'm taking up on a colleague's time).

I am sincerely learning nothing and feeling left out. My only solace is studying for my exams during downtime. I didn't have these godawful feelings when I was in the office everyday. I used to think these colleagues were great but now many of them sound cold on the phone, they're strangers to me, I realize that a guy in upper management I used to idolize sounds extremely annoying, and I wouldn't really mind if I switched jobs and never saw these people again. In fact I haven't seen most of these people since March because we only enable audio during calls.

How do you keep morale high while WFH? I'm in a staff industry position.

I dont know if I should stay in accounting

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Im still earning my degree, but I've been working for a small organization for 2 years. It's been such a struggle and despite keeping checklists, double checking my work, taking notes etc...I've been doing poorly. Has anyone else struggled with keeping up with all the details? Were you able to get past it? I'm not performing at the same level as my peers and I think it may be due to ADD. The doctor has started me on non stimulant medication, but I'm still not where I need to be. Any advice? What other careers could I look into?

Will big 4 reach out to my previous firm for background checks?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:06 PM PDT

I accepted a full-time offer for next year from a small regional firm that I previously did an internship with. However, my ultimate goal is big 4 so i want to send out applications to big 4 this week.

One big 4 had a questionnaire on the application section that asked "Do you currently have any full-time offers from other firms?"

I am guessing they are asking this to prevent candidates like myself from applying and reneging on other firms.

obviously if i want a chance with this big 4 firm, i gotta lie and say no. but will they contact the previous firm to confirm? my fear is that they will, and the small firm will cancel my offer because of it.

Anyone jumped from PA after a few months?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:59 AM PDT

So I just started and I can already tell I'm not cut out for the culture of PA. Thinking about applying to internal audit jobs. Everyone recommends staying a year but I would really prefer not to because this sucks. Seriously hate it and college just crammed PA down our throats. Any personal stories, advice or feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Resources to Learn Quickbooks anyone?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:02 PM PDT

I'm looking to learn quickbooks at a practical level, as I've been applying to jobs which require years of experience in it. Are there any good go-to resources to practice realistic examples on quickbooks?

Also, are there any free quickbooks trials, and free certifications options?

    Unrestricted .CPA Domains

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:58 AM PDT

I've been curious about the 'new' wave of .cpa domain registrations. This got me thinking....how about those 'special' .cpa domains?

To my surprise...no one restricted the firm registration of domain names. Normally, certain domain names are blacklisted for obvious reasons.

    Search here -> https://register.domains.cpa/erp/

As of this writing, these names are still available to grab for firms...

    • boner.cpa
    • IHateMyClients.cpa
    • IQuit.cpa
    • DepreciateMe.cpa
    • RootyTootyBooty.cpa
