    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Aug 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Looking for a "Build your own ETF" website - does it exists?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 06:38 AM PDT

The S&P500 is market cap weighted so it holds 6% in Microsoft, but only 1.27% in Visa, because Visa has a much smaller market cap than Microsoft.

I want to build my own market cap weighted index, but only of the stocks I select. So I'm looking for an app/site that will calculate the % to allocate to each stock for a portfolio of selected stocks. Does this exists?

If not, I might build it. Would anyone be interested in using something like this? With free trades and fractional shares, it would be easy to build your own index funds with a tool like this.

Edit: To be clear, I'm looking for a site that will tell me what my target allocation should be - not a site that lets me enter my target allocation.

With stimulus talks stalled until August, anyone else sitting out the rest of the month?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 07:05 AM PDT

With no more funny money to prop up the markets, the realities of the economy might actually start merging with the market. We could be in for a long and rough road until they finally get this passed. Congress is in summer recess and we don't even know how many more weeks it'll take until they can come to an agreement. Got a bad feeling about this one.

Anyone else sitting it out? Anyone think I'm dead wrong for a reason I seem to he overlooking?

Edit: Sorry I meant September in the title for when Congress reconvenes.

AMD CEO sold $15.9 millions worth of AMD stock

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:31 PM PDT

According to the SEC filing, here are a couple of high-profile AMD insider selling for the past couple days:

    1. Lisa Su (CEO): sold $11.8M worth of AMD stock in Aug 11, and sold $4.1M in Aug 9.
    2. KUMAR DEVINDER (CFO): sold $5M in Aug 11, and sold $1.2M in Aug 9.
    3. Bergman Rick (EVP): $1.9M in Aug 9.
    4. Papermaster Mark D (CTO): sold $1.25M in Aug 9.
    5. GRASBY PAUL DARREN (SVP & CSO): sold $1.2M in Aug 9.
    6. Norrod Forrest Eugene (SVP): $934k in Aug 9
    7. WOLIN HARRY A (SVP): sold $698k in Aug 9.
    8. SMITH DARLA M (CAO): sold $332k in Aug 9.

That is a total of $28.4M in 2 days, which is a lot of profit-taking for a short amount of time.

Will this trend continue as AMD price keeps hitting ATH? Quite possible. This means that more volatility is coming for AMD, which we have already seen recently with all these crazy swings. So don't YOLO/FOMO into AMD because of all the hype.

Is it time to get into the travel industry?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:06 AM PDT

FYI: I am a swing trader who usually takes positions of ~1week up to months at a time

Looking at the steady recovery that has begun in the travel industry, I am considering dumping most of my portfolio and diversifying across big-cap travel companies. This would include stocks such as MAR or UAL. The travel industry is one of the few that has not fully recovered from the COVID crash and has long term upside potential.

Am I crazy, or could this be an opportunity worth taking? I would like to hear some of your thoughts.

Mexican states are banning sugary drinks such as coca-cola

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:08 AM PDT

At least 10 states in Mexico are interested in imposing a ban on sugary drinks/processed foods for citizens under 18. The average Mexican drinks 700+ cups of coca-cola each year, making them the top consumer of soda in the world. Would this law affect coca-colas revenue, or will Mexicans just drink sugar-free coca-cola products and continue to maintain a similar diet?

Can someone explain how options work like I’m 7yrs old

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:44 PM PDT

"GoOgLe iT".. I did but I still don't understand how people make money and why it's so risky. I get theyre predicting the price of a stock for a certain time but how do they make the money? For example I saw someone say they made a $1500 call on Tesla for Friday. Today's Thursday and it hit $1600. How much do they gain? I'm assuming their call was good, right?

Quicken Loans parent Rocket Cos. shares soar 10% premarket after company offers Q2 guidance

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 06:11 AM PDT

    Article here

Not a long article so copy and paste here is

Shares of Rocket Companies RKT, -6.30% rose 10% in premarket trade Friday, after the parent of major mortgage lender Quicken Loans offered guidance for its second quarter. The company, which went public last week, said it expects net income of $3.5 billion, after a loss of $54 million in the same period a year ago. Revenue is expected to climb to $5.037 billion from $938 million a year ago. The guidance was issued as part of a financial disclosure requirement for bondholders, the company said in a release. It will report second-quarter earnings on Sept. 2 and does not expect to offer guidance in future quarters. There are currently too few FactSet estimates to create a reliable consensus. The company said its closed loan originations volume of $72.3 billion was up 126% from a year ago. Rocket raised $1.8 billion in its IPO. The stock closed Thursday just above its IPO issue price of $18.

    Thoughts on renewable energy stocks?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 03:27 AM PDT

Renewable energy is expanding worldwide faster than ever before.

The renewable energy ETFs have been doing great recently, with some (e.g., TAN, QCLN) rising more than 70% over the last 3 months.

What do you think? Is it a good time to invest in renewable energy?

Palantir IPO Date in Late Sept?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 06:30 AM PDT

I got put onto the Palantir IPO train a few months ago after seeing a thread on here about it. Doing some research last night and found this article:

    https://marketrealist.com/p/palantir-stock-ipo-date/

Which is essentially a link to another article:

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200813005445/en/Akita-Michinoku-Capital-Comments-Palantir-Prepare-Direct (but they aren't sure if the company's name is Palantir or Plantir so take it for what it's worth haha!)

Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone else has been looking for more information on it.

    Cheers, Happy Friday!

    Any thoughts on CVAC

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:38 AM PDT

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pennystocks/comments/i9k8at/cvac_ipo_today_backed_by_bill_gates/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Can't cross post but this works i guess.

tldr: CVACs opening today, backed by Bill Gates, Donald Trump previously tried to acquire it, has promising study to cure multiple diseases including COVID. They're going to release test results by monday.

Anyways is buying a stock when it releases normally a high risk play? This one looks like it'll open at a high price and potentially get pumped. I'm hoping this one gets pumped after open and i can trade this off by EOD or beginning of monday.

    Beware of etoro

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:32 AM PDT

This is exactly the biggest evidence that you DONT own the underlying assets in etoro, no other legit broker will let a European buy USA ETF , cause in a legit broker you own the asset which is not allowed by European law, but since you don't own anything in etoro , then etoro can let you buy USA etf ,

    Second

Any legit broker will let you transfer your holdings (etf -stocks) to any other legit broker cause you own these assets , in etoro you can't transfer what "you own" cause u actually don't own it , etoro doesn't accept you transfer or receive assets from other brokers ,

What else is left to say , you really don't own the assets in etoro , the string of words saying "you are buying the underlying asset " doesn't mean you own it , underlying what? The cfd contract that is underlying the price (CFd contract is a decaying asset by law ), that's what it means , not the stock it self

    Third

Plain and simple , any broker is required by law , no matter which country it is In , to issue physical stock owner ship certificates to prospective owners , and etoro cant issue that , cause you don't own anything .

People need to just understand this and stop saying that in etoro you own the asset ,

I just gave you all the evidence you want :)

    Question about RKT financials

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:30 AM PDT

    RKT just released Q2 highlights.

    5B Revenue (437% YoY)

    3B Net Income (1000% YoY....)

The company has 100M outstanding shares and a current price of about $19.65 which gives the company a marketcap of ~2B.

Their Q2 net income alone is already much higher than their market cap?? That would make RKT an insanely undervalued company right now, and there's no way these numbers add up right?

I know I;m definitely making a mistake on something..can anyone clarify what that is?

Is clean energy the way of the near future?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:37 AM PDT

The obvious answer is yes, but the market has reflected such a quick shift in energy investing. How much has really changed since March?

Looking at clean energy stocks, it seems like the rebound after the March COVID crash has been much more friendly towards the renewable energy sector, especially solar. On the other hand, many of the major oil/ natural gas companies have not rebounded and continued to trend downwards since March. Does this trend in stock price reflect an actual significant change in usage of renewable energy, or is this based off hopes of future changes? Anyone think clean energy stocks are overvalued? Undervalued? Good long term investments?

    Carnival ($CCL), likelihood of bankruptcy?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:31 AM PDT

I'm holding the bag, got 50 shares of CCL that I bought prior to COVID. It's recovered from the shittiest April lows and I could have gotten out (but unfortunately did not) with a moderate loss in early June when the airlines and cruiselines were getting bid to irrational levels.

At this point, bankruptcy chances are probably around 30-40% [edit: see below why this is not the case] and IMHO it's not looking good given we still don't know how to deal with COVID despite being almost 6 months into the crisis.

They might make it if CDC doesn't extend the no sail order past September 30.

So for me, it's really a question of do I sell for a tax write off now or later in the fall.

Was wondering if anyone's looked more into CCL and cruise lines as investments now when the hour is dark or has a strong conviction that the "recovery basket" trade still has another puff left in her?

Am I better off investing in something like Stoxx 600 or do you have any other recommendations?

    Cisco (CSCO) thoughts?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:28 AM PDT

Cisco were down 11% yesterday following their announcement of poorer than expected earnings and restructuring plans. This is a company that seems to have been reinventing themselves for a few years and the stock price has remained very static. However, they could benefit as 5G becomes more widespread.

Interested to hear peoples thoughts on cisco? Do you think their restructure will bring them future success or do you see them taking a long time, or perhaps never, fully recovering from here?
