We made an automatic stock screener and portfolio tracker to help making decisions

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:12 PM PDT

Hey everyone, my friend and I are very into stocks. We have created spreadsheets to screen stocks and track our portfolios. We spent weekends working on automating them and making them usable for everyone here (inspired by u/mau2509's awesome spreadsheet - thanks for sharing here!).

    Here is the spreadsheet

You can go to "File" > "Make a copy" to save it. Gray cells are the ones that take user input, all other ones are automatically filled out.

There are 3 tables in the spreadsheet (all in "Main" sheet):

    1. "Purchased": enter the stock tickers you own with the number of shares. This helps you look at the total value of your position in a stock, total portfolio value and how much % is in each stock.
    2. "Investment Tracker": enter your desired % allocation for each category (US stocks, International Stocks, Bonds) if you don't like the default values. We find this useful to take into consideration how diversified our portfolio is before making buy/sell decisions, so that our portfolio is more robust to downturns specific to a certain category.
    3. "Decision Making": enter any stock ticker you're screening to buy/sell. It will automatically fill out several metrics: current price; category and sector; total return over 1, 3, 5, 10 years; recommendation; 30-day trend; current, average and maximum P/E ratio (w/ % of how far the current value is from the average and from max); VWAP; RSI; current and forecasted EPS.

We added comments to explain most metrics and color-coded based on our subjective opinions on what numbers are good/bad for buying decisions (green for good, red for bad, yellow for neutral). You can also use this sheet for selling decisions with different conditions.

The "Decision Making" table can be used independently of the other ones for stock screening.

    We hope this is helpful!

EDIT 1: So glad people are finding this helpful. Let us know if you have any questions or feedback!

EDIT 2: some people don't see the option "File > Make a copy." On desktop, it might be the case that your URL has a "htmlview" part, then you need to remove this whole part from your URL: "/htmlview?pru=AAABdEXlNIo*a9I_UER_uzpprj34gFQuNw"

Interesting article regarding the benefits of always staying in the market.

"Looking at data going back to 1930, Bank of America found that if an investor missed the S&P 500′s 10 best days in each decade, total returns would be just 91%, strikingly below the 14,962% return for investors who held steady throughout the ups and downs".

Best stocks for a baby right now?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:34 AM PDT

My niece is four months old, and I'm planning to start a portfolio for her for her Christmas gift. For my own long-term investment I usually stick to about 80% indexes, 10% favorite stocks and 10% for swing trading. But I've been thinking I want her to learn about value and compounding interest over time by picking a few individual stocks and watching them grow for the next 18-20 years. Gonna throw in about a thousand bucks, hopefully adding to it once my job bounces back (I'm in the Live Events industry, this gift is coming from my savings).

What stocks would you pick, if you had $1000 to set up a gift like that?

Edited to add: if it helps, my sister (baby's mom) is deeply environmentally conscious, total hippie type, who is obsessed with music, the ocean, and yoga. Lol.

    Livongo - Teladoc

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:23 AM PDT

If I wanted to go in on one of these companies, which stock should I pick up? I know there is a merger in the works, livongo shares will be converted to Teladoc if the deal goes through.

Is it better right now to buy livongo? Or should I just get Teladoc if they are going to merge anyways.

Tesla's market cap drives past Walmart, Procter and Gamble, and Home Depot

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:37 PM PDT

Tesla has overtaken Walmart, Procter and Gamble, Mastercard, and Home Depot by market cap.

The recent rally started after Tesla announced it would be doing a five to one stock split on August 31st. Since the announcement, Tesla has added an additional $126 billion to its market capitalization bringing the total to $382 billion as of Friday's close.

The surge pushed Tesla's market capitalization past many household names including retail giant Walmart and consumer goods corporation Procter and Gamble.

Walmart recently announced an earnings beat on both revenue and earnings per share led by 97% annual eCommerce growth. Walmart's total revenue in the second quarter was $137 billion, while Tesla's second-quarter revenue was only $6 billion. Walmart's net income was $6.48 billion while Tesla's second-quarter net income was just over $100 million.

Procter and Gamble reported $17.7 billion in revenue with $2.8 billion in net income in its last quarter, more than 173%, and 2,592% respectively when compared to Tesla's most recent earnings.

Tesla currently has a $10 billion market capitalization lead over Walmart and a $41 billion lead over Procter & Gamble.

Outside of the stock split announcement, investors are excited about Tesla's delivery of 90,000 cars in the second quarter, 10,000 above estimates.

Tesla is gearing up to pass finance conglomerate Visa and the multinational corporation Johnson & Johnson. Visa's market capitalization is only $14 billion ahead of Tesla's while Johnson & Johnson has a $20 billion lead over the automobile company. Surpassing Johnson & Johnson would put Tesla in the Top 10 by market capitalization.

Tesla is not the only company seeing its shares rise in price following the announcement of a stock split. Apple announced a four to one stock split on July 30th. Since the announcement, Apple has added $480 billion to its market capitalization making it the first US company to pass the $2 trillion market cap milestone. The rally has increased Apple's lead as the most valuable US company over Amazon and Microsoft by more than $400 billion.

PAE secures $896 million contract with U.S. Navy

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:14 AM PDT

The contract is worth more than their current market cap. It appears that this is a relatively new company that was previously trading as a blank check company not long ago. With 85% of shares owned by institutions, a little bit of volume should get the few remaining public shares moving.

Seems to me this is a great aerospace/defense company that hasn't been discovered by the masses yet but I'd love to hear what you all think.

The pandemic is ramping up the war between Amazon, Walmart, and Target, and making them more powerful than ever

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:04 AM PDT

    https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-and-target-are-getting-more-powerful-2020-8

The pandemic is fueling record growth at Amazon, Walmart, and Target, and solidifying their reign over America's retail landscape for years to come.

All three retailers reported blowout sales in the second quarter. Walmart's digital sales nearly doubled from a year earlier and Target's nearly tripled. The companies' same-store sales climbed 9% and 10.9%, respectively. Amazon's overall sales grew 40% in the quarter.

As thousands of stores shut down across the country at the start of the pandemic, Amazon, Walmart, and Target were among the retailers deemed "essential" and therefore able to continue operating. This means they benefitted from several weeks of big stock-up trips, as consumers stockpiled paper goods, food, cleaning products, and more.

Building conviction for novices (or why subscribing to a stock picker can be helpful)

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT

As we all know, an essential part of the equation for long term "buy and hold" investing is conviction. Conviction is the complete belief in the future success of a company in your portfolio. It is what allows us to hold through turbulence and accumulate significant long term gains.

Again, as we know, buying quality companies is relatively easy. Holding them is much harder.

For experienced investors, conviction is built through reading earnings reports, researching leadership, looking at growth projections, researching the broader market, looking at competitors and the competitive landscape, etc. Conviction comes with experience. If you don't know what to look for, or how to parse the wealth of information at our fingertips, it's very difficult to do as a novice.

And unfortunately, with stock investing, experience comes through making mistakes, which means losing money.

Another way to build conviction is to get recommendations from people with more experience, ideally with explanations behind their decision making. It is why people seek out mentors. It is why people go to university. And it's a great way to learn, assuming you have trust in the source of information.

I know it is a very controversial opinion on this sub, but for new investors, I am a big fan of subscribing to stock picking services, especially those that make long term recommendations and publish long form articles explaining the investing thesis. As a stock novice myself, I just couldn't stomach investing my hard earned money without some professional guidance. In terms of my portfolio growth, it has worked out very well for me so far.

And the most important part: it has helped me build conviction.

I will not disclose the services I subscribe to, as I'm not trying to shill for anyone. But I will say that many quality stock picking subscriptions offer a free trial period (2 or 4 weeks, generally), which allows you to try a few until you find one you like.

For all of the other newbies out there, I can't recommend this enough.

<$10 stocks that would be good for selling covered calls?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:44 PM PDT

I'm new-ish to investing and would like to try selling covered calls. That said, I don't exactly have the cash required to buy 100 shares of stocks like Apple or Amazon.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for stocks $10 and under that would be relatively good for selling covered calls and have enough volume.

    Thank you for any advice!
