    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

Don't force visitors to create an account first.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:19 AM PDT

Most of the great web-apps don't forces you to create an account, they let you try out the product first.

    This reduces friction.

If you're creating an app, make sure you do that.

Ask for login/signup when it's necessary and put social logins.

    Hope this will help someone.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Busines partner pushed me out by starting another company.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:09 PM PDT

    Hi folks

So, I started a business with a partner (I'll call him Bob) a few years ago. We developed a software product for a niche industry. Bob was our CEO. He was the subject matter expert who came from that industry as a small business owner himself. I was the CTO and developed the complete system. This was over the span of 3 years where we mostly worked from funding and some investment. The ownership was initially 51(Bob)/49(Me), and we were both directors.

We had the product in beta, test users loved it, and we had just got accepted into a business incubator (1 of 8 companies accepted out of hundreds) they invested $100,000 for 5% of the company.

At this point, our relationship was breaking down quickly. I think it was a mixture of stresses from the business, in his personal life, and also.. I think the product being close to complete, he saw less "need" for me.

Part of the business incubator program was for the co-founders to do a 3-month boot camp. It was in another province (I'm in Canada). I could not go due to family obligations (newborn, etc). Bob said it would be good for the rest of the team to go. This included our sales guy Chris (also Bob's brother, and 2 new developers. Things got worse, the environment was becoming extremely toxic and I was being roadblocked, and I decided for my sanity to quit.

We had a good shareholders agreement in place, and I was fully vested. At one point he called me yelling that I have to give up my ownership so he can hire someone else. I told him I didn't have to give up shit and I hung up the phone. Though a few weeks later he asked our corp lawyer to talk to me. I told him I was willing to compromise but I'd want to see the remaining tax liabilities paid off and for him to make a reasonable offer.

Anyways I hear nothing for a while. About 6 months later, I get contacted by CRA (like the IRS for you Americans). The company had not paid deductions for some time and there has been no communication with the company or Bob and I was liable for when I was a director. I did some digging and find that the business is being run under a new corporation in another province. The sole director of the company was Chris (Bob's brother).

The new company was operating the same business, same brand, same customers. The original company was a numbered company, and the new company a named company but with what we were using as our trade name. I even own the domain.

When I sold my house, there was a lien for money owed for Workplace Safety. I asked the real estate lawyer about my business partner. When he checked, my partner's house was transferred to Chris for a nominal fee. So, it looks like he is sheltering himself from the old companies' liabilities via his brother. For the longest time, Bob was no longer a public face of the company, his brother was listed as CEO on the website but no mention of Bob. Recently, with an update, Bob is listed as a founder and an executive office (Chris is still CEO).

Though I'm not certain, I have reason to believe all the shareholders from the old company, except myself and Bob have ownership in the new company, and that Chris has the equivalent of Bob's and my ownership from the old company.

I recently hired a lawyer, but I am looking for any help or tips where people may have been in a similar situation. I know its an obvious breach of Bob's fiduciary duty to old co. but is there anything I am missing where their actions could be legit? The shareholder agreement required decisions like sales of assets to another company require 2/3rd majority, which could not have been meet without my ownership.

Regarding the IP, they were initially using the same software, but eventually ported it from Android to IOS. That was the plan when I was there because of Android's poor stability with BLE devices. The functionality is almost identical, but now a different code base. Does having a new code base affect my case?

    Thanks,

    Mat

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 08:10 PM PDT

    Hello Friends,

I have developed an app for serving a particular industry. I am currently testing that App and wondering if I can patent that App/business model.

For Example, its like Yelp but only serving a particular sector/business. can it be patented?

how to build value in an early startup

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:18 AM PDT

My first rodeo...Have attorneys, provisional patent, potential developers, CTO, Potential advisory board members, a killer idea, plenty of time on my hands. No MVP or storyboard screenshots, etc... yet.

Hopefully the advice I get from the title will aid others in my position. Wanting to do a proper 409A valuation at this early stage, but prior to that, want to build in as much value as possible? Wanting to know what I do tomorrow...

    Is there a step x step? A book? A consultant? A mentor?

UK based CBD startup - impossible to advertise anywhere :(

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Hi everyone. Long time wantrapreneur & lurker here, finally decided to start something in a niche category.

Essentially the business is reselling completely legal CBD products from a multitude of legitimate suppliers; however, just as I was about to launch my brand l have hit a seemingly unpassible barrier - nobody wants to deal with anything to do with CBD!

Having issues with payment providers (PayPal and Stripe) as well as advertising platforms (Facebook/Instagram and Twitter) to name the most popular ones.

Wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can overcome these barriers and get my brand in front of potential customers?

    Thanks in advance!

Untangling GDPR, wishing there was some ELI5 resources out there.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 10:15 AM PDT

We have an MVP app out in a sort of 'soft release'/'beta' way - double sided market. With 25 paying business subscribers and around 800 active users. We hadn't really given much thought to opt-in functionality, as we were so far from wanting to send out any emails/notifications etc that it got bumped down the to do list.

Now I'm looking at subscriber retention, and thinking about an email campaign to newly signed up, paying subscribers to help them get started, hints, tips articles etc etc. I assume this type of email very much falls under 'marketing' and therefore requires an opt-in (but I'm not sure)...we can add this for new subscribers np and getting that opt-in successful will be a challenge, I'm sure. But what about the businesses already long past sign up? Can I send out an email asking them if they want to opt in? Is that not a 'breach' in itself?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:52 AM PDT

Hey guys! I had an idea for a product(software/app) and I want to make a short demonstration of the app before involving any technical person ( Since I don't know much of coding). What's a software I can use to create such a video with preferably a short learning curve?

Leveraging a network - asking the right questions

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:37 AM PDT

I have a few friends/acquaintances in my network who have had successful exits. Some are even founders/partners at big VC firms. We hang out sometimes at happy hour (before covid) or at birthday parties and talk about Basketball, Netflix shows, kids etc... I recently started becoming a wantrapreneur, and one of my co-founders asked me to leverage my network.

I thought about what to ask them, but I realized I don't have a specific question. I haven't gotten to a point where I need specific strategy for a problem. Most of the issues I run into are beginner issues with solutions that are often found online. So I don't approach my network with these questions nor questions such as "so how did you become so successful?" I feel it's a waste of their time because the answer is somewhere usually along the lines of "a lot of hard work, timing, and some luck." My advisor told me something similar : "only ask questions for experts when you have a specific question."

What are everyone's take on this?

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

What questions should one ask interviewing a Senior Community Manager?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 03:41 AM PDT

I'm looking to hire a senior community manager for a saas social media marketing product. The person should be able to conduct experiments in terms of activities on social media, etc.

I'm trying to hire for this position for the 4th time. Previous 3 candisfo that I hired weren't the right fit. And it cost me around 8-9 months time too.
