Scared another driver and they swerved and hit a curb

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT

This is in Idaho. Was waiting to turn left onto a road coming out from a parking lot from my place of work, off the clock. Didn't see the truck coming because a tree blocked my view but I inched more toward the intersection, stopped suddenly when I saw the truck and it was more than enough time to prevent her from hitting me. I think the way I inched toward the road scared her. She swerved and hit the curb. She was going quite fast, maybe 25 to 30 in a 15 zone right next to a parking lot and I feel she wouldn't have lost control if she was was going slower.

She said her truck was fine and she herself was fine, she drove off as I was pulling my insurance info up on my phone so she didn't get that. I waited a few minutes in the parking lot after she left to make sure her tire that hit the curb was good and everything. We didn't report anything. The thing is, it was at my work so it would be easy to find me and she was really mad. I'm paranoid of her coming back and trying to make a claim against me or something. Whose fault would this be and does she have any way of getting me in trouble?

    Pivoting into Reinsurance

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 01:40 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I've been in the primary and excess underwriting space in the US (in Iowa, but I want to move out of this state) for a little over 8 years, working primarily on larger casualty business with varying program structures (guaranteed cost, large deductible, excess, etc.). I really want to get into the reinsurance space either as an underwriter, portfolio manager, client manager, or any other similar role. I have a CPCU and ARM, but not the ARe. Has anyone here worked in primary insurance and then pivoted into reinsurance? Was it difficult? How did you do it? Any tips, advice, discussion, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Have secondary insurance through employer; provider repeatedly claims they are "not in network" with secondary

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 02:48 PM PDT

    (MS, USA)

    Hi all.

Most providers have not had an issue filing with our secondary insurance, but this one provider refuses to file. We took it upon ourselves to file our appointments with secondary, who has picked up the bill and paid the bill in full.

Regardless, this provider is now requiring full payment after every appointment, and we'll continue to file with secondary on our own to be reimbursed.

This works, but is a massive pain in the ass to do for every appointment. I've explained several times that our secondary insurance follows the same network as primary, but this doesn't seem to stick. The provider continues to argue that they will not receive payment from the secondary insurance.

Is there some other recourse or strategy I can follow to avoid this?

Fire Sprinklers Set Off From Cooking.. No Renters Insurance

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 07:43 AM PDT

My girlfriend was cooking with some oil and when she was done she put the hot oil under water. This created a lot of smoke and set off the fire sprinkler system in my kitchen. I don't believe this was an act of negligence because we didn't do anything out of the norm. The smoke detectors didn't even go off.

The damage caused from the flooding is extremely severe. Not only to our unit but the two units below us completely flooded from the water going down the building. I do not have renter's insurance but the owner has property insurance.

Also, I do not believe the fire sprinkler system has been inspected in years. All the fire extinguishers are out dated and believe anything fire related has to be inspected annually.

Will I have to pay for any of the damages or does the owners property insurance cover it?

    USAA Unsuccessful Subrogation?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Phoenix - My girlfriend (28) was rear ended in early March. The other driver hit her while she was stopped at a red light. They exchanged information but the other driver was only 15 and when my GF called the cops the other driver got scared and left the scene. Officer showed up and told her they wouldn't file a report because the damage wasn't severe enough (under $1000). She persisted but they refused, she was smart enough to get the officer's name and badge number. As far as I know they never contacted the other driver. I got the sense they didn't want to deal with the situation.

The collision was hard enough that is broke my GFs sunglasses she was wearing and damaged some items in her trunk. She went to urgent care for neck pain that evening.

GF has USAA insurance. Files a claim with all the relevant info. Takes her car to an approved repair shop. Ends up being $4000 in damage and she pays the $500 deductible. Insurance refuses to cover replacement costs for belongings or cost of visit to urgent care.

She files a complaint with the police department. Ombudsman says they don't think they did anything wrong and GF drops it.

She follows up with USAA every 2-3 weeks and there's no progress on recovering her deductible. Not sure what insurance the other driver had, but apparently they are completely non-responsive. GF starts hounding her insurance after a couple months and they basically shrug and say they tried but they haven't heard back. GF gets exhausted pursuing things and backs off. Last communication was about a month ago.

Today she gets a letter that they were unable to recover anything. It says she is free to attempt to recover her deductible directly from the driver at fault. Basically the subrogation process was unsuccessful. She calls and they say the same thing. We tried, no response, we're eating the cost, your deductible is your problem now.

    So my questions are:

    1) is the only remaining option small claims court?

    2) How common is this? It seems like her insurance did not advocate for her at all. Should she start shopping for a new insurance company?

    3) How likely is it that USAA is lying to her? I listened in on a couple of these calls and they are basically saying they can't get in touch with the other insurance company and there's nothing they can do. That seems like BS to me. Surely there's a process for when other companies refuse to communicate (arbitration?)

    Thanks!

    Advice for multiple policy comparison

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 10:20 PM PDT

I have a number of insurance policies in Colorado including auto, home, umbrella and more, and I have a feeling my current rate is high (it's all through one company). What's the best, most efficient way to compare the total cost of all policies across different companies? I'd like to shop around but the prospect of talking to a bunch of providers about each policy sounds terrible.

    Any advice?

What Personal Property Is/Isn't "Electronic Data Processing Equipment"?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:26 AM PDT

My HOI agent is reaching out to claims to see if anyone can give guidance so we set the proper coverage, but checking here to see if any policy holders or adjusters have past experience on what does/does not qualify (in case the answer is inconclusive).

My homeowner's policy has a special limit on personal property for "...computers and electronic data processing equipment and accessories and recording or storage media used with the foregoing".

To me, laptops/desktops/external drives are clear cut. It is less clear if tablets/monitors/camcorders apply. Then (to me) you are really in the weeds when you get to modems/routers/gaming consoles (they have an OS, have an SSD/HDD, accept keyboard/mouse inputs)...any thoughts?

Insurance didn't pay claim until after deductibles resettled

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:47 PM PDT

    hello,

My wife had 2 surgeries last year, for both of her feet. She decided to do both in 1 year because the doctor told her that after she maxes out her deductible, the insurance would cover the rest of the bill (this was checked before proceeding with the 2nd surgery). The 2nd surgery took place last Sept and everything went well and she fully paid every billing she received.

Now almost a year later, she received a bill via mail from the hospital showing the surgery from last Sept., the insurance paying for half on 3/25/20 and now she owes the rest. (For the first surgery, the insurance and the bills all arrived in a timely manner, within 1-2 months). Her deductible resets every Jan 1st so the our first guess as to why she's receiving a bill is because the insurance didn't process the claim till half a year later (2020) even though the surgery took place in 2019.

She plans on calling the insurance tomorrow but she's stressing over it now, I would like to know if we have a case of not having pay the bill or we would like to get some pointers on how can we tell the insurance/hospital about the situation. Also, she left her old job earlier this year so she's not using the insurance anymore.

    thank you in advance.

Advice on first time - car insurance

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:06 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have been under my parents policy since I got my license 8 years ago but they're kicking me off and I'm shopping around for auto insurance. I'm live in New York, 24 years old in September, no tickets, points, etc.

I drive a 2011 Camry (worth about $8k) that is fully paid off. I got quoted $180 a month for liability and comprehensive but I'm starting to think I really only need liability. If I understand correctly comprehensive correctly in only covers "natural disaster" type accidents. Will I be safe if I drop this?

This quote was through Allstate, all of those providers quoted me about $300 for the same coverage. Is Allstate a good provider?

    Bodily Injury: $50k/$100k

    Property Damage: $100k

    Uninsured motorist: $50k/100k

Comprehensive: $500 deductible (don't think I need this)

I'm not sure if this is enough coverage but any advice would be helpful, thank you.

Vehicle Gap insurance issues. Need advice ASAP

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:58 PM PDT

So two years ago we purchased a car, we ended up trading in a car and rolled about 14,000 into the new car.

We were told by the dealer we needed gap insurance in case anything happened we wouldn't end up with a ton of negative equity that we had to pay after insurance paid our cars market value.

This June we hit a deer, and insurance declared our vehicle a total loss.

Insurance was super fast and great with this, ended up paying us $25,000.

Next we went to gap which by the first day was the biggest headache. The amount of documents they required was beyond belief. After TWO MONTHS of running around getting all these stupid items we had our claim finally submitted with gap insurance.

Two days ago get an email saying okay we are ready to send a cheque to your finance company of $9,400.

I'm super confused, our remainder loan is $18,500 and they are barley offering half. They are giving me some excuse of how they only pay the actual cash value of our car with some calculation with how much we still owe.

In their website it states they pay all negative equity so we aren't stuck with owing money. They keep giving me the run around saying since we owed over $42,000 we didn't qualify or some shit?

I don't want to sign anything because I feel like gap insurance should be paying the complete 18,500. Due to them needing so many documents and changing what they need we bought a new car - under the assumption gap would finally pay up soon enough. I need some advice here. We are about to be stuck paying about 8500 out of pocket for a totalled car that we thovuht we had coverage on so we never had to worry of such a thing.

On the gap contract it says they pay upto $35,000 and we are only receding 9,500?

We are just super confused and worried they are trying to avoid paying the full amount.

This was the last email I received from the claim person.

"Your GAP contract provides you with 160% coverage of the selling price or the Canadian Blackbook value at the time of purchase, whichever is less. Your total qualifying amount for your GAP claim is $41,520.00 and you financed over this amount.

This is where the shortfall is.

I hope this helps you understand the contract and your claim. "

Claim filed. Will proceeding with repairs raise insurance rates?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:00 PM PDT

    Hey r/Insurance,

I got into a fender bender last week and immediately filed a claim. The other party had minor damage and is getting covered by my policy. My car has minor damage, mostly to the paint. Before I send in photos to Progressive to receive a quote for repairs on my vehicle, is it worth considering fixing this on my own to reduce the amount that my rates will increase? Or will the rates increase by the same amount whether or not I get my vehicle repaired on my own?

    Many thanks. :)

Gave contractor insurance info to see if biohazard clean up is covered by my policy. I now can't get a hold of him nor the company. Considering having another company give a quote. How to handle this situation...

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 10:12 AM PDT

Basically my father passed about a month ago at home and the house is a huge mess. Ive been working with insurance and trying to travel back and forth to get things done and clean up the house. Where he lives theres only 1 local company that does biohazard cleaning, the others travel from out of town and have poor reviews which include massive price gouging. My insurance is denying coverage of death cleanup, so if the company can't fight for it, i really can't be on the hook for THOUSANDS myself. There were only a few bad reviews on the local company I wanted to go with and EVERYONE in his town recommended them.

I had the contractor come out and give a quote last Thursday morning. He said he'd get me an official estimate by Friday morning with pics. He never did nor did he contact me. I got a hold of him Monday morning and he sent over the estimate a few hours later without any pics. He said they need half payment upfront (which is extreme, I know) and half upon completion. I gave him my dad's HO insurance (HO3) info and he said he'd reach out to them by end of day Monday. I called twice yesterday and no answer (call gets ignored after 3 or 4 rings), so I left a message to call me back. Called twice today, first time rang a full 10 times like normal, no answer. Second call was just flat out ignored after 2 rings. I tried calling the company number rather than the manager and no answer. Ive worked with contractors before and never had this happen. Between the lack of communication and wanting 50% upfront, im a little gunshy now, if that makes sense. I could be very well overreacting, let me know if that's the case. I just feel biohazard cleanup should have a bit more push to get it done.

I have a strong feeling this guy never spoke with insurance. He still hasn't sent me the pics and is ignoring my calls. I want to look at having another company from out of town come in to offer an estimate. The longer the house sits, the worse the mess inside gets. My concern is if both companies go to the insurance at the same time. Is that going to cause an issue or is it something I can just talk to the adjuster about?

    Thanks!

NYC Accident - Getting claims when we did not hit the car owner who hit us!

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 07:29 PM PDT

    Hello people of Reddit,

I need some help. It is a fairly long post and I apologize if this is not the right platform for it but I do not know where else to put it. I know this forum has people from all around the world. But the incident I am about to talk about happened in NYC. My sisters and mom were in a car accident on 21st May 2019 at 2315 hrs as reported in the police report. It took place at the intersection of 278I North Bound Bruckner Expressway and Boynton Avenue.

So, this is what happened...road work was going on and my sister who was in the driver's seat said she was not moving due to a traffic jam. Then out of nowhere, a red Lexus SUV hit our 2004 Civic from left rear, completely destroyed our left rear wheel, suspension, C pillar and rear window!! My mom was in the front and the other sister in the back. Thankfully they walked away with minor scratches. The red Lexus SUV then went on to hit a black Nissan sedan which was in front of us. The Lexus is insured by USAA (for veterans) and our civic was insured by Geico. After few weeks of investigation and police reporting etc etc, neither group accepted any faults and they said case dismissed.

Now, more than a year later, yesterday we received a call from Geico saying that USAA is asking us to pay for the red Lexus, a whopping 32k USD!!! This is absurd as we did not hit them and have pics showing no front damage to our Civic and no rear damage to the red Lexus. I am afraid this might turn into a lawsuit and we just don't have 32k USD lying around and even if we did, we are not at fault. Another thing to note is that the police report made it sound like we were at fault and we tried to amend it right after the accident by going to the police station several times but never got to meet the officers present at the scene because they were never there when we were at the station.

I also found a traffic cam near the location but don't know who to talk to about getting archived video footage. Also, I'd love to get some suggestions/advice on how to proceed!!

    Thanks!!!!

Repairs exceed value of my car

I got rear ended. What should I expect?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 05:37 PM PDT

I was waiting for a car to pull out of a spot in a parking lot and a car behind me didn't see me and back into the back of my car. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but my rear fender is pretty messed up. Tires look OK and I can still open my trunk so there's that. I submitted a claim with the other dude's insurance info to my insurance, Progressive. My mom told me that they would probably take what I would receive from my deductible, but I have no clue what that means. Im looking at my insurance info and it says that for property damage, its $5000 each accident, No deductible, but IDK what that means. It also says that the collision coverage is $2500 deductible.

I really needed a car for work so I just signed up for a basic plan without knowing what everything means. I have never been in an accident before so I figured i would try to decipher everything later. Well, later is now and i am so lost.

Can someone explain to me what it means, if possible?? Thanks

Edit to add: I live in Southern California in the San Diego county.

    Disability Insurance

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:21 AM PDT

New CRNA looking for advice on private LTDI. My group does not provide any DI and I've talked to a couple of Financial Advisors who have recommended different companies. Mass Mutual and Northwestern with each talking down about the other. I'm hesitant to go with either based on their sales tactics and possible commission incentive rather than my best interest. Northwestern is much more affordable especially when considering the possible dividend after 3 years of coverage.

I searched with Policy Genius and Set For Life which both suggested Principal but has a 24 month limit on "Nervous/Mental/Substance Disorder" claim for a 10% discount. Is this mandatory? I noticed that one agent had a quote for me with a 4M occupation class (did not have the limitation) and another had it as a 3A but both with Principal. Was told that CRNAs required the limitation. What is the correct class?

Does anyone have any insight on any disability insurance who can guide me? I don't want to make a mistake in choosing the wrong carrier who could possible affect me if a disability does occur.

Tree pinned to my roof, half front porch supports gone and hole in my garage roof... what now? (Iowa)

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 03:08 PM PDT

We live in eastern Iowa and Monday we got a real ripper of a storm. Like run for your basement, three days later no power and maybe in a week optimistic, more likely later than that. Real proper apocalyptic like. Right down to wandering chickens and everyone has fire pits out to cook.

I have a snapped tree pinning an adjacent power line to my roof, lost shingles, part of the corner of the roof lifting from the looks of it, a hole punched in my garage roof, two of the three supports for my porch came away, a shutter bent, someone's shed is in my yard, a private school three blocks away dumped their roof in my yard.

I called my insurance, that claim is started, adjuster is out Sunday but what now? I left the house because there is still a pinned line but it's not the city's priority and while I have running water and hot water, and hey sticking it out for two days with the bbq is fine, my husband drove back from his work (Hah, he just started it Monday so we are staying in the Airbnb we rented for him this week about 3 hours away) and grabbed us. Brought the dog and will be back Friday and may try to camp if there is no power still.

But what now? I have never dealt with this sort of thing before. My father in law is saying keep receipts. Is there a checklist for this sort of thing that I should be printing out or writing down?

Ive had state farm for 3 years and they are giving me a discount for no losses (my last loss was 4 years ago, and another a total of 7 years ago). Its a pain to switch to Mercury as they are asking for all types of certifications (HOA cert) etc. Which one is easier and hassle free? Any head to head comparisons?

Wife got hit; insurance claiming no fault

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 02:16 PM PDT

My wife was waiting for a red light, it turned green and she moved forward. A car came from the left during a red and hit her driver side door, bending the whole door frame but otherwise not causing any noticeable damage on the rest of the car. The other car only had a slightly bend license plate.

The other driver was distraught repeatedly apologized and offered to pay out of pocket as if my wife didn't want to report it to our insurance; she said she'd let him know when she got home. The weird thing was the insurance wasn't in the name of the guy who was driving the car, but someone else (he was younger, so maybe a parent?). She told me about what happened, and I said it'd be best to bring it to insurance. We put in a claim, and surprise surprise the other driver changed his tune and claimed that my wife was the one to run the red light.

It turns out they both have the same insurance company (Geico). There were no witnesses around, no cameras to be seen, and the police were not called as there was no injury and the cars were still drivable.

Insurance got back and said we will be liable for our full $500 deducible since they can't prove it was not my wife's fault. We do need to fix it as there's now an air gap in the door that will let in rain, particles, and everything else. This was decided after she told her side several times in great detail to her assigned agent.

It's not strictly relevant, but I have to say this feels situation feels so unfair and like some kind of cosmic punishment for approaching situations with honesty. My wife goes in early every day early to work with Covid patients, and we're both constantly stressed about her and our situation and this shitty thing happens and it makes me feel so despondent. I am very happy that no one got hurt, but this really feels like a slap in the face and I can't help but think the insurance company is somehow being unethical by claiming "their hands are tied without hard evidence."

I talked to the agent and basically he said the only way to prevent this in the future was to install a dashcam; I've already bought one and I'll be installing it in the next few days.

Can anyone offer advice about this? Is there any recourse or are we just screwed?
