I have just over 100 sales on Etsy within 18 months and I'm thinking about investing into a site. Do you think it's worth the investment if my product is low margin, or is it better to stick with Etsy's fees and just keep selling there instead?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:09 AM PDT

I sell kinky greeting cards at http://openmedesigns.etsy.com

Since they're so niche, finding the audience for them is difficult, but I know it's there since I've had nothing but good reviews and feedback from anyone who's into the kink scene. Over the last 18 months, I've managed to gain over 100 sales through both Etsy and Ebay.

I'm now at the stage where I'm considering investing in a site to further expand sales. However, since a site will cost considerably more than what I make in profit on my cards, I'm wondering if it'd be worth it.

    Pros:

One of the things that comes to mind is how a customer feels about my product on Etsy, compared to seeing it on a dedicated site. Etsy normally means buying from a single person, whereas on a dedicated site it normally means buying from a more established business. I want to use that customer confidence to increase sales and potentially bump up the SEO rankings, since not everyone knows about Etsy enough to click through and/or wants to use it, but may be more likely to purchase something from a dedicated site. A site would also mean zero Etsy fees.

    Cons:

As my cards only cost £4, even if I sold 100 of them a month, that's only £400 profit before costs. As I'm not even making 10 sales/month, that's a big hill to climb and one which might be too early to climb. As I'm not making a lot of sales, Etsy's fees aren't really an issue for me, but as it's a low margin item, it does eat into the profit. I'd rather have more sales than a larger percentage of the £4, however.

    Questions for you:

    • If you started on Etsy, at what point did you set up your website? When did you feel was the right time?
    • Have you since made more or less sales on Etsy?
    • Do you feel like it's more effort to run your own site than have your items on Etsy?

I'm at the stage now where I'd really like to grow the business much larger, but because it's such a niche product, I've hit a bit of a wall. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Cheers!

Clients who want special treatment or extra attention

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:46 PM PDT

How do you manage clients who want communciation or treatment beyond the standard scope of work?

I have a lady who proudly professes that she has 'servants' at her home in Sri Lanka as I manage content configuration for her brand. She's quite unrealistic about the product she has and despite giving her a clear scope of work, she's accused us of delivering an aspect late (not true).

When we outlined that she needs to review the SOW and that actually everything is on-track, she replied angrily that no-one who works for her is allowed to speak to her in that tone. She wants a meeting over it.

I'm about ready to fire her honestly and refund her in full because I cannot stand her. I offered her a meeting despite this, but if she carries on, I don't think I can handle her - despite the high pay. I just don't like working with jerks who are demanding or can't handle basic boundaries.

    Which route should I go?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:38 PM PDT

I have a food trailer I will be using to make donuts. I also have the capability to make popcorn, shaved ice, hot dogs, nachos, hamburgers, floats, sundaes. I can take the trailer in the direction of donuts with lots of gourmet toppings with basic coffee and milk (maybe juice) or basic donuts (cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, chocolate frosted) with the other items I mentioned first. Which trailer would you be more willing to stop at? Any reccomendations or suggestions or problems you see arising would be helpful. This is my first go at a food trailer. My husband says to stick with just donuts and keep it simple. I feel like the donuts are the hardest part and once I get that everything will be easy to incorporate. Thanks!!

    EIN for Seller’s Permit?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:45 PM PDT

I'm currently doing the legal documentation for my small home-based business and I'm confused about applying for my seller's permit. It's asking for my SSN. Do I use my business EIN in place of that? Or do I use my own SSN?

So far, I've applied for my LLC and plan on applying for a DBA under my LLC in my county in California. Thanks for any help you all can provide!

What are some solutions to high shipping costs?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:31 PM PDT

When I started my first online business, I found that shipping costs pretty much ate into the profit and it wasn't even high quality shipping material like boxes.

The business I started , to prove a point that anything can make sales, was a business that sent rubbish to people.

It was literally scrap paper, wrappers etc (garbage).

So my product cost was strictly shipping materials.

Now I see this business like

snackcrate starting at $14.99 for 5-6 candy bars . Which Id imagine costs at most $5-6. So $10.00 for shipping a box in america and canada.

When I was getting quoted, it was closer to $15-20 for a tracked package.

How are you guys solving this shipping issue?

Help w/ Licenses & Permits in California

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:52 PM PDT

Hey there! First post here and very excited for the adventure I'm about to depart on.

I'm about a couple months away from launching an Herb and Spice business. I am located in California and am very confused on what I need to get started regarding permits and licenses.

Anyone on here involved in the food industry?

So far I've already applied and received confirmation on my sole proprietorship.

Here's what I believe I need to apply for:

Business License Tax License Seller's permit

Am I missing anything else I need to do?

Depending on what the state (or county) says, I will either be processing/packing everything at home. If not allowed, there's a permitted commissary kitchen I will be working out of.

All the research I've done online is a bit confusing to me. It seems that everything is getting beat around the bush and all I want is the clear requirements I need be okay to sell to the public.

Please any and all advice is welcome.

    Thanks!

Starting a small lip gloss business

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:22 PM PDT

So I (25f) am starting a small lip gloss business. I have minimal supplies but I don't want to buy an excessive amount because I haven't sold anything yet and don't know yet if the product will sell at all. My question to you all is, how would you go about step by step in building your business up from scratch. Promoting and getting sells on your product, any advice is great advice.

    Moving forward with handmade crafts

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:45 AM PDT

Hey there! I've been creating items and crafts for a while and recently I've been asked to participate in fairs and to help others with small batch orders. I want to start doing this legally, and mainly interested in getting things at whole sale (like tshirts and supplies). Where do I even start? I really need someone to hold my hand through this; sole proprietor vs LLC...I work full time and this is really just a side gig that I really enjoy doing. Should I start with legal zoom? What do you suggest?

A cordless/corded desktop phone that accepts SIM cards?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:37 PM PDT

Long story short. My landline in the past has sucked and their new competitor with better internet only offers VOIP and it hasn't been any more reliable in the few months I've had their service. I'd like to port my business number to a wireless carrier but don't want to have a cellphone because it looks unprofessional to customers who do come in. I want a cordless or corded desktop phone that accepts SIM cards. Is there such a thing? I tried searching online/Amazon and looks like a few do say they do but they all have 1 star ratings saying it doesn't work.

If I am an LLC and I hire a developer from India to do some work are they 1099?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:25 PM PDT

How do the rules work with this? Yes I trust this person as I worked with him before on an outside project but he lives in India. Now that I run a business and he can help me do some I.T work would he be a 1099 even though he is in India? Do I even pay him from payroll or just write checks out to him?

How do you all handle such cases?

I have heard that you are supposed to file for it, but if I haven't made sale yet, then when? Obviously its when I start making a sale, but I know they require you to report often once you first file. Any suggestions?

Help Me Create a Database of Free Resources for Small Business Owners!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:12 PM PDT

    LINK TO 3 QUESTION MINI-SURVEY - https://forms.gle/Tz3KXt1DXXUzEHA97

    Small Business Owners of Reddit,

We all know that it can be hard to start a business on our own, and some of the early challenges I and many others faced while starting a business include logo design, branding, and more.

When creating a business, most people don't think, I can't wait to spend 10 hours researching the best website builder that fits my budget, but often times that turns out to be the case.

My goal is to create a website/database of free online resources for small businesses to help with branding, graphic design, and more. I'm calling on all of you to fill out a quick, 3 question mini-survey I created, and I'd also really appreciate any feedback!

I promise make all the information I collect free to the public, and I'm also planning to add an optional "Contributors" section where I can thank every person who has contributed to the website I hope to build (again, not for profit).

Any feedback is gladly appreciated, and the more people that contribute the better!

Again, link to the form: https://forms.gle/Tz3KXt1DXXUzEHA97

Lastly, do not worry about if someone has already added the resource to the website, you should still put it in and leave a review if you can!

Is starting a business in this economic environment crazy?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Because of Covid my company is looking to make voluntary redundancies. From the get go I knew that this was a company I didn't want to work for full time (culture related). So I'm considering taking it.

Would I be crazy to think about starting my own business in this environment?

I work in comms and would work from home. Office based support / consultancy work that kind of thing.

The redundancy money is a good amount to get me started. But the plunge is scary.

Any office based small business perspectives out there? Has things quietened down? Do you find your work fulfilling?

    I'm based in the UK.

    Sh*t, I Have a Sore Throat!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:56 PM PDT

So I grew up a hypocondriac. Makes sense that I put up glass barriers in my business, stickers on the ground for social distancing, mandatory masks while in my store, and set up hand sanitizers for my employees that are touchfree. I did everything I could to make it as sanitary and clean as possible even though Im not actually in my store most of the time.

I spend my day at my vendor directing my supply line. This means I interact with the 15ish employees there. Maybe up to 25. I direct all the traffic and make sure all my returns are processed while sending out everything lightning fast. It's why I havent taken a vacation or a day off in 6 years. I'm the hub. Even when I burnt out and had a seizure I woke up in the hospital and went straight to work, only missed an hour and a half. Its cuz I have to be there.

I know no business can be successful if the owner has to be there for the business to operate. I only do what I do because I bought the business when it was about 1mm in the red and needed to kill myself to get in the black. Now Im in the black. Problem is growth has exceeded my ability to delegate responsibility. I dont have time to train and develop my guys to take over my tasks because even though Ive paid off my debt, the demand has suddenly come back and its crazier than ever.

My solution is to move what I do out into the hands of my employees. I know I know I know. This is how you make a business work. But I didnt have the capital to do it before. So Im slowly starting to move everything from my supplier to my store. I'm rebuilding my actual building from the ground up. Im reinforcing the ceilings, introducing new shelving, and I even put in a new Central Air for AC/Heat. So yea, I am in the process of removing myself from teh equation. I just need a few more months.

    Now the problem.

I fucking have a sore throat.

    Fuck!

I had an itch like a month ago and it went away that same day. Today, all day my throat is bothering me. Not intensely but enough that Im starting to worry and I think Im going to go get a test done for COVID19. I just declined to go to my nephew's 5th birthday party because I want to quarantine for the day.

I have no idea what Ill do tomorrow if I have a sore throat still. I know if I have more symptoms I cant go to work. My employees arent old but I dont care. COVID19 is dangerous and could potentially harm people long term even if the virus itself doesnt do anything to them when they get it.

Have any of you business owners caught the virus? If so how did you handle your own delegation, especially if you're largely a cash business? How does being an Owner on Salary apply to the CARES Act? Do you give yourself 80 hours even though you're on salary? Most importantly, how does contact tracing work here? Should I shut my store down and have everyone work remotely? It seems like overkill for the moment especially since we all wear masks and today the only issue I have is a slight sore throat.

But yea, however this ends I know I tend to overeact. Maybe Im just venting on here and overreacting. Maybe I just need a break.

    Invoice bonding

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I print out my own invoices that have a carbon copy behind the top copy for the customer. However, the back page can move around while I'm writing it because they aren't bonded together. I was wondering if anyone knew of a "hack" or something I could use to temporarily bond those two invoices together until I am finished writing them up.
