Many popular forms of business during the 2010’s (e-commerce, web dev., house flipping, etc.) have become over-saturated. What new/up and coming forms of business do you think will take off in this decade?

Got my first paying subscriber and wanted to share with people who would understand!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 04:25 PM PDT

Just got my first paying customer on my side project after working on it for 2 months. It's only $5/mo, but it feels great that someone trusts the product enough that they're willing to pay me to unlock the Premium features!

Also, it's really hard to explain how amazing this feeling is to people who have salary jobs or aren't entrepreneurs because you tell them "I got a paying customer" and they immediately ask "How much are you getting?" and I respond "$5/mo" and they roll their eyes.

Yes, it's not the same as getting a paycheck every 2 weeks, but when you build something that delivers value and people give you money in exchange, it's such a different thing. And, I would argue it's better and hopefully 1 paying subscriber becomes 100 and I can start to pay some bills.

So anyway, just wanted to share this milestone with people who would understand and wishing you all the best of luck in your projects!

Anyone here become an Entrepreneur after becoming sober of an addiction?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 09:33 AM PDT

I am a sober alcoholic who has always dreamed of starting a business, but was unable to keep focus, as my focus was always on alcohol. I have what I believe is a great business idea that is for addicts in recovery, by addicts in recovery. This business idea would connect sober entrepreneurs with those in recovery, offering them tools of comfort as they navigate their journey.

I would love to hear your stories of professional life after addiction!

    Buying mobile apps

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 08:14 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm a full time iOS developer. I have an idea for a side project where I buy existing iOS apps, make a bunch of improvements and hopefully profit over the long run as an investment. Has anyone done anything like this or had success? Thanks!

Advice needed: how do I stop obsessing about an idea?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:00 PM PDT

Any words of advice for entrepreneurial software devs?

As a tech entrepreneur and software developer, I can often get engrossed in a particular idea or project.

From previous experience, I know being too engrossed usually leads to fallout where you can't be bothered with the project any longer (burnout).

Has anyone got any effective strategies for maintaining a balance when launching a product they are very passionate about without spending hours on end in front of a laptop coding?

I don't think movies like social network have helped as they've instilled the idea that revolutionary apps like Facebook were made overnight.

I want out of my business. But I'm not sure how to go about it.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 08:54 AM PDT

    Hi r/Entrepreneur!

I run a lawn care/landscaping business and I've been running it since about April. I've made some decent money (for a teenager at least, probably not much if you have bills to pay [I'm 17]).

I have a website, an LLC, business insurance etc.

But I'm burnt out. I simply don't enjoy the work anymore. I'm on a break right now to see if I could get that burn out to go away, but it's not. I really just want out of the business. The work is no where near enjoyable as it used to be, and the pay for lawn services in my area are pretty low.

I'm just really not sure how to go about it. I don't want to ruin my name in the community because I plan on starting another business after I find something that peaks my interest.

I also don't want to leave my customers in a tight spot either. I'm fine with refunding the ones that already pre-payed for services. But since it's in the middle of the season I'm not sure if it would be difficult for them to find other service providers.

I tried convincing myself a few weeks ago to just finish out the season, but I'm finding that nearly impossible to do.

I want advice on what I could do in this situation that's both best for me, and best for my customers.

    Thank you guys!

    Improving cognition

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:39 PM PDT

I'd like to get more out of my brain in a day. Definitely not being hard on myself. I get that practice makes execution of processes faster, but wondering if anyone has any tips, practices or recommendations on improving the speed, endurance and quality of my cognition.

I've seen improvement from diet: fatty fish, leafy greens, coconut oil & water/herbal tea. Playing strategy games, improving communication skills, trying out hobbies that involve intense learning.

Getting positive reviews from customers and validating our startup✨

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 05:22 AM PDT

It's a great feeling when your work is being appreciated especially when your startup is new.

We had some of our customers raise funds from the investors database we provided them with. Our next step is to scale the database and get more investors on board. We plan to release a Version 2.0 with many more cool features I have in mind.

    Thanks for reading this.

Has someone ever hire a freelance developer to create a saas product, just to have the product not delivered and the business "stolen" by the developer?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:38 AM PDT

I mean you can't patent an idea right? So what would stop the developer from just not delivering the product after it's developed and just starting his own saas with it?

Had a business going prior to the pandemic, invested a lot of money. What to do now?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:16 AM PDT

So, I had a great business going. I saw an opportunity and a demand for our new product so I decided to invest a lot of money.

We invested a lot in resources, marketing and also had a few investors. But, with the pandemic,Business has halted .

It's really hard to continue when sales are scarce. Some employees have had to be removed and a lot have reduced pay. The investors are unhappy and alot of them have pulled out which also results in reduced funds. So we are going into a vicious cycle and it's not looking promising for us.

I don't know what I should do at this point. We are not able to manage finances . Give me some advice or sources that I could see look at to learn a few things about money and personal finance in general.

Platforms: The modern-day monopoly (another Jake Tran video)

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT

This video really opened my mind on how impactful the modern-day monopolies operate. Even tho half of these will be redundant with the advent of blockchain tech, it's still interesting to see how they operate in depth.

Not sure what kind of business to start

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 02:06 PM PDT

I've always dreamed of starting my own business, and have even dabbled in it a bit with tutoring services and an animated YouTube channel. As for my skillsets, I'm kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. I'm currently a programmer. I say "currently" because I've also had a variety of entry level jobs and internships in sales/marketing, telecommunications, accounting, and finance. I've worked on several art and design personal projects as well. What can I do? Should I just partner with someone who has a real idea?

EIDL Robo Calls and Sales Calls?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Has anyone else gotten a massive influx of robo calls or shady sales cold calls offering capital financing or Lines of Credit since filing for the EIDL?

My business has unfortunately gone under since I filed for the EIDL, but it's the only thing I can think of that would cause this massive influx. It's getting to the point to where I decline any I coming call.

    Anyone else notice the same?

How do you manage your daily schedule?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT

My day is extremely packed with tasks/meetings/follow ups/ etc and I'm curious what you entrepreneurs do to stay on track and not fall behind? I currently create daily itineraries for myself before each day starts, which has been extremely helpful and track my progress on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis.

What do you guys like to do, to have productive days and keep track of your progress towards certain goals?

How do I find a trusted manufacturer and protect my product. Also, general tips and advice is appreciated.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hello! I make RPG dice as a hobby and I have a design that has generated a lot of interest in the dice/ttrpg community and I don't really see it out there yet. Since I am a maker, I can create the dice to show to the manufacturer. I know an NDA is necessary and I am also considering getting a trademark (patent is not possible). But I'm not sure if a trademark is actually necessary to protect my product if they sign an NDA?

I'd like advice on how to find a manufacturer and how to verify that they are legitimate. I think I would prefer within Canada or US because 1) I've heard they are generally safer and 2) they will speak English. Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. I would consider China if I knew how to protect my product and myself. I can work with the language barrier if need be.

If you have general advice too, I would appreciate it. I am very new to this and I admit I have concerns about being taken advantage of. I don't know yet what to expect or what is fair, so I'm trying gain information from different resources to protect myself. (I know this last part is very vague and therefore might be more difficult to answer).

Thank you for reading and for your help!

How do I get more sales?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 06:31 AM PDT

    So fellow entrepreneurs,

I have been working for a side project for over 6 months - an organic vegetable delivery scheme with the long term goal of becoming an organic grocery store besides just vegetables. The country where I am doing it has no similar services, at least it did not have before I launched.

So I launched my website and social media profiles 1.5 weeks ago, and so far I am not super thrilled with the results. The idea was to test the market by launching a beta version of an online store and not to spend a lot of funds on marketing, development, warehouse and etc.

I have promoted my IG account by working with 8 influencers and bloggers, who used my service and products and shared it with their followers. I have also tried contacting friends and promoted the service through them. So far, got 250 followers on IG (which seems ok, considering I am from a country with 1.4M population and in relation to other similar accounts) and just 1 real sale. The customer will share his experience with his friends and on social media, he was left really happy and he is looking forward to ordering again.

But the question still remains: how do I get more sales? I got several strategies in my mind plus I was planning on spending like 1000 euros on targeting ads after some A/B Testing. However, I would love to hear any advices from more experienced entrepreneurs and marketers.

And how do I know when I should give up on the idea or keep going?

Starting a Shopify store and worried about shipping

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:31 AM PDT

I'm setting up to integrate Printful with Shopify to sell products with my artwork on them. With the horror stories of USPS shipping delays, and UPS and Fedex both mangling packages, I'm really worried. Should I still do it? Are customers patient enough to wait through shipping delays?

    health insurance as compensation..?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I have never been truly self-employed: I've always worked in an environment where weekly compensation was dependable. That's probably going to change before long.

I may be inheriting a client from a firm I'm a partner in, then dissolving the partnership. The client has been balking at the monthly billing from Current Firm, and when I take over I'll be able to lower that somewhat because, since I'll be truly self-employed, I have much lower overhead.

That said, as a part of The Client's monthly billing, is it possible to be added to their group health insurance? Their group rate is sure to be less than my individual rate, and the coverage is likely better as well. Thoughts?

p.s. sub-reddit question: how do I know what my comment karma is?

Need help to niche down on blogging

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 10:54 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I decided to take an opportunity at monetising my hobby which is writing. I've been writing for years now just as a means to deposit my thoughts and express myself in the best possible way on Medium (and privately journaling on paper). However, I don't think that is the best place to gather reach, scale and branding through proper SEO formatting.

I basically want to involve topics about stoicism, productivity, spirituality, positive masculinity, and some book review series from time to time. Any tips on how to niche it down?

For reference, I've been a reader of a certain blogger and I think that I want to follow the same business model because his content is based on personal experience and "freewriting". In spite of that, I do believe I can make the same quality if not, better content.

I've always wanted to take the leap and just go for it that's why I'm learning the ropes as a preliminary task before buying the domain name.

    Thanks!
