Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:59 PM PDT In October of 2018, /u/Mr_Suzan was inspired by a post from /u/galloog1 to seek out underrated stock picks from the /r/investing community and monitor their performance. Post-COVID bounce, I wanted to see how these picks have performed, so I've gathered them all here. A few of these have earnings posting soon, so the ranks may change, but overall it looks like a solid performance by the community. Any new underrated stocks to think about?
Some quick stats:
If you'd like to participate in the next round, I've opened up a new survey here: https://www.reddit.com/i2thge/

The underrated stock survey! Submit your picks for the community to track Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:39 AM PDT Following on the previous tracking post (http://redd.it/i2mmzg) and the highly upvoted request from /u/DJ-Ascii , I've set up this post for another round of underrated or undervalued stock picks. Are we heading towards a Cyberpunk-style future in which a few companies own and run everything? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:12 PM PDT Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google. These companies have one thing in common - their market cap is above $1 Trillion. They're all fairly diversified, some more some less but they certainly don't rely on one single product to exist. It's actually basically impossible to open a business nowadays without having to do with at least one of these companies. I realize that just 15 years ago the top 4 companies by market cap were very different ones and historically things have always changed, especially in tech. This time feels different though. Regulators are sleeping and politicians don't understand these companies. On top of that China is getting more and more powerful so it's questionable if there's even political interest in holding back the tech giants. Whenever competition emerges they can just kill it with money either by simply buying the competition or making the own product superior. Furthermore their products have long lasting lock in effects. For the business side it's very expensive to move away from them and your average user hates having to get used to something new. As long as something "just works" people don't change for minor benefit and it feels like these companies have gotten strong enough to ensure that nobody else is ever offering something vastly superior. As much as the past has shown otherwise, I don't see a world in which Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Google are not at all at least top 10 in market cap 20 years from now. At this point why even bother with anything else and not go all in on them? At what point do you think it is time to engage a financial consultant/asset manager/advisor? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT At what point do you think it is time to engage a financial consultant/asset manager/advisor? Some say never, but many rich and not so rich are using them. Is it just for asset protection and less administrative works? Is it when one's investable assets reaches $100K, 500K, 1m, 5m, 10m, 100m? Or only when you are too old to manage them yourself? Asset managers/financial planners typically charge around 1-1.5% or more, in return for building you a portfolio (conservative/moderate/aggressive), which most experienced investors know anyway, more or less . It is said active managers in the past have had a poor record beating the passive funds. The returns on average would be around 6-8%/year, which is no better than passive investing in S&P/IT/Global etf. So, what do people engage financial consultants? Would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thank you. Microsoft confirms talks to buy a TikTok Posted: 02 Aug 2020 04:33 PM PDT From the Microsoft blog: Following a conversation between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and President Donald J. Trump, Microsoft is prepared to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States. — This should be interesting for Microsoft, as they will now have a consumer lens that spans from teens/young adults (primary TikTok demographic) all the way up to Professionals (since they own LinkedIn). What do you think? Microsoft/TikTok deal on hold after presidential opposition - WSJ Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:36 AM PDT The president on Friday night said he preferred a ban of TikTok from the U.S. rather than a sale, catching both Bytedance (BDNCE) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) off-guard, say sources. TikTok initially tried to save the deal by making additional concessions, such as adding 10K U.S. jobs over the next three years, and Bytedance founder Zhang Yiming agreeing to sell his stake, but it's not clear that's going to change Trump's mind. For now, deal talks are dead, reports the Journal [link] [comments]
TikTok relocate to London from Beijing Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:29 PM PDT ByteDance's founders are to announce their intention to set up shop in London soon, the newspaper said, adding that the move was likely to upset U.S. President Donald Trump who has considered banning TikTok in the United States. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tiktok-owners-relocate-london-beijing-060108309.html [link] [comments]
The War between Southern and Northern EU Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:05 AM PDT Although EU member countries tried to hold one more summit, they still failed to reach the agreement on recovery funds for assisting weak countries in northern European. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, also said that the summit is expected to be failed again, but they will take every effort to finish "the impossible task" and the agreement may not be reached until the related meeting arranged in August. Besides frugal four countries, including Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Austria, Finland started to reject to the 750-billion-euros recovery funds. Giuseppe Conte, Prime Mister of Italy which needs the assistance blame the five countries for extortion. The objection of Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, along with other four counterparts, reflects the will of voters in these countries. The next general election of the Netherlands will be held in March, 2021, so Mark Rutte shows strong attitude about the increasing aggression from extremely right and brexit parties. Though the EU has reduced the funds to 400 billion euros, Mark Rutte insisted that the related funds should be controlled below 350 billion euros. From the financial market last week came the news that the tough frugal five countries will adapt a moderate attitude to reach related plans, which supports well the exchange rate of euro. Unfortunately, the plan of recovery funds still havent been passed yet. And a reduced plan with 350-400 billion euros is likely to be passed in August, which can be reflected from the recent recovery of euro exchange rate. If the plan will be approved or not will not affect the euro much. On the contrary, there was still no plan passed in the past two-month negotiation, which shows the fact that the financial market is extremely concerned about the future operation of the EU, faced with the serious divergence between North and South Europe. In addition, the trade negotiation between the EU and UK hasnt made any progress, thus no matter the internal revitalization plan, recovery funds or trade negotiation with the UK, these all put the EU under a difficult circumstance. Therefore, I still believe that the recent rise of euro and pound will come to an end. Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:37 AM PDT From what I understand; margin accounts have interest rates and these interest rates apply to the money borrowed to purchase stock (called Initial Margin). My question is that is it possible to not borrow money at all while owning a margin account. Only using your entire sum inside the account to purchase stocks?. Can someone explain the purpose of Unrealistic Ask Prices? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:13 AM PDT I see some stocks, especially ones with high volatility, that are (for example) trading for around $2, but when I look at the level 2 market data, I always see there are people trying to sell 5k shares at like...$200 per share. Is this someone who just has a static position open indefinitely? Or is this some tactic/attempt to manipulate the price of the stock? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:36 PM PDT Word on the street is Palantir is set to debut with a public listing in September/October 2020. Mystery cost basis -- please help Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:27 PM PDT Bought 1 share of BEP a while back to start a very small speculative position. I have not really been paying attention to it but just realized that my cost basis on the position is $47.86. The day I purchased the share (6/26) it traded between the range of 38.81 and 37.69. My initial assumption was that it was just a fluke fill on a market order. Generally I limit but I did but a couple things this day and I remember that I got lazy on a few. But this is such a liquid stock there is no way that it gaped 20% on the fill....and wouldn't it reflect that in the days trading range if it did? Is this potentially some weird effect of it being a LP? Or maybe they made some purchase/sale that effected market cap or something weird? Not a big deal as its only 50 bucks and I plan to entirely absorb this anyway but I'm at a complete loss here... Investing in Apple for the next 10 years? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:29 AM PDT Apple has had 1,044% gain in 10 years; 267% in the past 5 years. Google has had 545% in the past 10 years; 135% in the past 5 years. Microsoft has had 725% in the past 10 years; 336% in the past 5 years. I was thinking about it, and would it be a bad idea to just split my money in a couple stocks (still looking at the other long term companies, but probably Google and Microsoft) but just keep it there for the next 10 years or whenever I need it? If i invest my savings of just shy of 100k, and contribute bi-weekly (each part of my paycheck I can buy more stocks) I could add about 40-50k annually. Is this a bad idea? I understand the concept of diversifying but I also don't believe these companies will be overshadowed in the next 10 years. Is there something I'm not considering? Why do people overly diversify and routinely buy and sell? How often do people go 'ultra long' on stocks? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:23 AM PDT Airbus is down 50% (60e from 120/130e), Boeing is doing even worse. Russell Napier sees at least 4% inflation Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:17 PM PDT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEGfyFE5brE https://themarket.ch/interview/russell-napier-central-banks-have-become-irrelevant-ld.2323 With governments taking over the printing press, Napier makes the argument that central banks across the world are in the weakest position they find themselves in modern history. With politicians influencing monetary policy, major inflationary environments in the US and across the developed world is becoming more of a possible reality. What are the top MODERN/NEW investment books that talk about the modern market? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:28 PM PDT I have read all the classically recommended investing books such as the Intelligent Investor, Rich Dad Poor Dad and One up on Wall Street, etc. They usually just talk about the market crash in the 90s. However, I'm more interested in reading books that are relatively newer and give more insights on the current and modern market. Are you investing in crypto, gold, or silver stocks right now? Why or why not? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:43 AM PDT Wondering what the consensus is on non-US currency, given inflation rates may become higher than normal in the coming months. If the fed keeps pumping out money while the economy declines, will we see more people investing in crypto, gold, or silver? During the Great Depression, gold went from $20.67 an ounce to $35 in 1934. In the 1973 oil crisis, gold went from $106 to $183 the next year. In 2008, gold prices went from $865 to 1,104 in 2009. It seems every time the economy suffers gold prices increase. This is probably common knowledge by now, but I'm wondering if you guys are bullish on crypto/gold/silver? I'm fairly new to the stock market, so not sure if this information would make much sense to more experienced investors. Experience with Vanguard Flagship Services? 1M+ Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:49 PM PDT I have an older family friend who does not like their financial advisor ( lack of communication mainly ). I am also afraid they are getting gouged by fees and was exploring alternatives for them. Does anyone have experience with Vanguard Flagship Services? I understand a Vanguard advisor will ONLY recommend Vanguard ETFs and WILL NOT recommend stocks. Does this remain true at the 1M+ Level? How aggressive and risky could one expect a Flagship Advisor to be? Any experiences with Vanguard at this level? Those who invest in tech, how much of the underlying tech do you understand? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:55 AM PDT Investors who invested in SaaS companies are reaping record profits, but I wonder how much of the underlying technology they actually understand. As someone not in the tech field, when I read a detailed assessment of such a company, I can understand a little of it, but much of it goes over my head. I can understand basically what the company does, but I can't determine if the company has much of a technological lead over the competitors. How much of the tech do you feel you have to understand before investing, and is there a way non-tech saavy people like me should approach such companies? Are you investing in biotech stocks? Why or why not? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:37 PM PDT Any thoughts on biotech stocks? There's a dip right now and I am considering buying. I'm looking at IBIO, Vaccinex, INOVIO, OPKO health, TTOO, VBIV and maybe even VAXART. All have risen 150%+ since the outbreak started. I invested in Novavax on my paper stock account a few months ago, and it's up nearly 200% right now. There is some volatility with these smaller companies, but they are still on a steady increase. I don't see much risk right now, since COVID will probably be around for awhile. I'm new to investing, so if my rationale is flawed, please set me straight [link] [comments] |
