Family business shut down after 32 years

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:49 AM PDT

To start, whom ever may be reading this, thank you. I wasn't sure which subreddit to run to, but here we are.

I am a 23 year old guy, I am in my senior year of college, I have three brothers (sitting in the middle) and a mother. My father started a business 32 years ago, if you couldn't tell by my username, yes a pizza joint.

I knew my father as the hardest working, most caring, loving and most of all the most respected person I've ever met. His name was Nick, he passed away suddenly three and a half years ago after years of lymphoma he had a stem cell transplant and his body just could not recover. Before he passed life was hard for us, yet he always kept an amazing attitude no matter what was in his way. After he passed, I was in a state of shock for the longest time, as was my whole family. We didn't have much time to grieve.

The business was left with my Aunt (dads side), who had worked with him since the beginning, my mom who had no prior experience in the business world and my three brothers and I. Life seemed to be non stop, which I didn't necessarily hate at the time for one, I always loved the fast paced working environment, I was good at it and two it was a distraction.

About a year ago we had a fall out with my Aunt, my mom and her just did not get along, she ended up leaving the business. The brothers and I held it down the best we could and my mom, even though she drove me crazy, I know she was doing the best she could. Then, Covid hit. As much as I would like to blame the closure on the pandemic, it just isn't entirely true. Yes it hurt us, but we were one of the busier places in town, my dad really set up a solid foundation. Things just weren't matching up, my two older brothers have full time jobs, I am in school but took mostly online classes which allowed me to help out, and my younger brother, well he's the baby. My mom has been having a tough time, and I just think it was a healthy decision for her to move on from the business.

Continuing on, its been about three months since we shut down, I started looking at a local Facebook "Foodies" group in my area and I saw a post of our place asking why we shut down. Reading through the comments there were many people who gave their best wishes and you could tell they felt for me and my family. On the other hand there were a handful of people chatting away, spewing out things like "the kids couldn't handle it" "The family called it quits, business is hard with the pandemic and if you don't really LOVE what your doing there isn't much of a point". Now at first yes these comments hurt me, but I stepped back and thought, these people don't know me or my family and the sure as hell don't know anything about what we've been through.

It really hurts to see what my father built for over 30 years gone in just a day. Things have started to slow down, which is maybe why all of this stress is piling up at once. I guess I'm here to just get some thoughts/opinions/anything really. I've also been up all night, so if things are written unclear I apologize. Thanks for reading

Cool thread about the science behind forming the right habits for your success

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:03 AM PDT

We often relate to our habits as a black box of personality, but they're changeable with effort. And like anything else, there's an optimal way to change a habit and a whole bunch of hard(er) ways. Enter Chris Sparks, executive coach and former World Poker Tour pro, who broke down how habits work on Twitter, including a number of really insightful nuggets like:

    — Conscious action is only the tip of the iceberg. 45% of reported (!) actions are performed automatically, below the surface of consciousness. We call these habits.

    — We infer our values, beliefs, and personality traits from our past actions. Our identity is constructed from this (unreliable) historical record. What we did yesterday shapes who we think we are today.

    — No habit occurs in a vacuum. Actions taken today alter the likelihood of all future actions. If I eat a cookie today, I become more likely to eat a cookie each time I find myself in a similar context. Every action feeds back into the system, echoing into eternity.

Everything we can possibly do to help our people, our companies and ourselves happens in the present moment. But it doesn't always need to be hard. Every time we act consciously, generating our actions from our deepest purpose, it reinforces a habit which makes doing so progressively easier in all future moments.

Create your habits consciously, and watch life change.

    Selling a course (What platforms)

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:57 AM PDT

Hello, I will be selling my own course in the future.
I'm trying to decide which platform to use. When I go into some competitor's courses, I see that their landing page is made with ClickFunnels, the payment with Copecart, and the Course login page from Kajabi. Isn't it possible to go with just one? I don't want to pay a subscription for all of them. Can anyone help me with that?

I have an idea for an existing company, how do I best go about it?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Without giving out too much information, I am financially invested and interested in a company which is moving to an online platform. Right now there is really nothing special about their online retail experience. I have a very specific idea in mind on an online customer experience that I think would actually make them unique and could help them grow. I would like to propose this experience to them as a submission to a call for proposal (although they don't have a call for proposal, this is me telling them they suck and they need something better lol.)

Part of this online customer experience would require some web browser coding which I could outsource to an entrepreneur friend. The other part of this would be a personalized approach that requires thorough knowledge of their products, their brand, and their clientele, this is where I come in. The finished design would then be presented to someone at the company, as an e-commerce business model. No other company in their line of products would benefit the same as this one from this business model I would suggest to them.

I'm sure you can imagine why I don't just make a company up myself and take on these steps. I don't have all that this company has - all I have is a very specific idea and the means to produce a version of it to them. It's an idea that I feel they are oblivious to the prospect of, and I want to deliver it to them in a way that captures the online customer experience that I'm imagining would make them a better company. I have no idea if this would put me in a position for any gratuity. All I know is that personally I don't buy their products as much as I would, but would probably buy products if they had this e-commerce platform, and that I don't see my investment going anywhere unless they start to get creative.

Do y'all have any suggestions? Am I crazy? Is this somehow doable? Are the logistics possible, and if so, what might they be?

    Tips for store opening?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:44 PM PDT

Hello all! I have been running a virtual bookstore for a bit now and the opportunity to open a physical shop has opened up! If I were selling anything other than books, I would likely stay online however I know how much of a visual process buying books are and I would like to provide that environment for my customers. That being said, what are the things I should focus on to ensure my soft/grand opening at the beginning of November goes smoothly? I know all of the big ticket items, I'm wondering more of the small things that people let slip through the cracks.

[FREE] I will make your website!

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:32 PM PDT

Hi all, I am a web designer working with HTML, CSS, and WordPress. If you are in need of a website, I can help you out. Obviously I won't be making the next udemy. But I have created sites for small local cleaning companies, a digital marketing agency, a fitness blog, a construction company, bakeries, etc. Nothing extremely advanced.

Why am I doing this? Because I believe it's the best way for me to quickly gain more experience and help businesses/brands amidst these times.

You would only have to pay for the host (its considered the best for WordPress by most of the polls I found) and the domain.

Im going to select a lot of projects so don't worry about my availability.

Here are a couple of websites I created -modified some sensitive info- so you can get a sense of my web design style.

But on a serious note, do you think that there is scope to create the next big thing?

    How to Monetise Book Highlights?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I've come to learn a lot about myself in the last few years and one thing I know that I genuinely enjoy is reading non fiction. I've read a decent amount since then on topics from history, to self help, to biography on a wide (and I mean wide) range of themes.

I have pretty much only been reading on Kindle and have been utilising the ability to take highlights of parts of the book I found to be profound or interesting.

Fast forward to now, and I have about 80 TXT files (one per book) full of notes (extracted from my Kindle).

How can I monetise this habit and the quotes I have accumulated? I'm pretty good at explaining any quote I bring up in any of those files.

    I've considered:

    • An email newsletter (but this doesn't monetise anything in of itself)
    • Writing my own book (more of a long term work in progress)

I can't think of much else, I blog about quotes here and there but I can't help but think that there is a better way to do things.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Liquidation supply trouble as a teen

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:33 AM PDT

So I'm in high school and I used to flip clearance items on ebay than I flipped stuff from alibaba but because covid it had put heavy delays on everything so I've tried liquidated goods and have had some luck buying online but the shipping kills some of my margins so I lve tried to find a local pallet place and have found 2 about an hour away from me but idk why but I'm nervous. There's one place that I'm favoring as it has lots of positive reviews on their fb page but due to covid their only letting in 25 people at a time and I'd need at least my dad and I to go in and do a quick look around and maybe a quick item search here and their to then if we did buy one and take it apart to load in the car and for some reason the process just feels weird. Has anyone had similar experiences/help to feel more comfortable buying pallets in person?

Shipping a 2 pound flat rate envelope under 6 dollars

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I bought 100 hoodies with everything set up for my brand "God Has Favorites". I started selling and wanted to ship out the hoodies. I didn't know media mail was only for books, cd's, etc. I need a different way to ship out the hoodies under 6 dollars. They are all under 2 pounds (apx 1.5). What is the best way to do this?

    Rate my business ideas

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

Hi guys! I have two business ideas and was wondering if I could get some feedback:

    1. Cookie orders for events: I could see people ordering these for birthday parties, business events, and such. I bake a lot and was thinking of creating some interesting flavours and bake some large and fresh bakery style cookies.

    2. Candles for swag bags So I started a small candle company a couple of years ago but didn't get too far. I was thinking of starting a sort of local business where I can make candles for company events or candles for goody bags that have a custom design (logos for company). This is kind of a spinoff another business idea I saw online where a woman sells baked goods but her biggest customers are business events where they want her brownies to be decorated with the company logo. I believe they could also be used for decor (wedding tables, have bride and groom's name on it, company logo and have a candle on each table). My concern is that they might not be willing to spend money on this sort of item

Should I incorporate my business in USA?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT

Hello! I'm from India and planning to register my company (sells music digitally and future plan is to open a small record label [subsidiary] to support unknown artists) in USA through firstbase.io.

Why? 1. Because my customer base is there. 2. I want to advertise too. Because in our community people think Instagram and YouTube ads are mostly scams (which is true). So I'm planning about billboard advertisements in the future. 3. The artists I connect with OR make music for currently are mostly from USA.

Would you recommend anyone from outside USA incorporate a company there?

Any help would be awesome! Thank you.

Following the Pareto Principle helped me get the most return for my time and effort

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Some of you may have heard about the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule. If you haven't, the rule essentially states that roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

I began using this rule to identify the small percentage of things that were bringing in the most results for me. This is true for my professional network as well as the way that I spent my time.

If you are noticing that just 5 of your clients or projects are bringing in most of the returns in comparison to the remaining 20, then it would be best to limit the effort that you spend on those 20.

I've found that this rule has helped me highlight my strength so I could focus on them, as well as highlight inefficiencies so that I could eliminate them. I break down more of my process here - https://youtu.be/Wxnv5PspT7E and totally recommend you look into how you can improve the efficiency of your work.

    How to do it all?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:34 AM PDT

How do I start a business, do a full time job, work on my personal and mental health, exercise, have a social life, and maintain my sanity?

Cause I swear the god I'm losing it. I'm gaining weight with all this stress. I'm frustrated and exhausted everyday even after I take a break. I can't concentrate some days and my productivity is questionable.

Like I wanna know how the hell do you do it all and keep it together?

After working 40 hours a week in an IT company, does anyone know a side hustle that is good for my back and doesn't include looking at the computer?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:27 AM PDT

I work in IT for 40 hours a week but I want to work more after work. However, I cannot look at the computer anymore after work so I'm looking for something that doesn't require that. Also, I have a bit of a back problem so I would want to do something that doesn't damage my back additionally.

Any advice? I know I'm being picky but maybe someone had a similar problem?

I'm looking for extra money and not necessarily a job, a side hustle could work too.

    A simple inventory management system

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:33 AM PDT

Those of you who sell physical products, how do you track inventory?

I'm thinking of building a very simple web app that would help companies manage their inventories and create purchase/sales orders. The functionality would be very basic, as I believe there are too many inventory management systems out there trying to offer every possible feature and charge accordingly.

Any feedback on this? How can I determine if other entrepreneurs and small business owners have this problem?
