I hate Linkedin gurus with a passion

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 06:04 PM PDT

    For the following reasons:

    1) overly positive and upbeat all the damn time

    2) emotionally exploitative posts like "2008. I was living in a rundown apartment after my parents abandoned me due to my alcoholism..."

    3) cringey statuses like "Reinventing Finance 1% at a time | Extraordinary Husband | Trailblazer in the Kitchen | Apptrepreneur"

    4) "if you don't come out of this quarantine with a new skill or job, you are WASTING this opportunity!" during a time of record unemployment

    5) shameless, absolutely shameless self-promotion

    6) People who leave their jobs and write 5 paragraphs thanking everyone and anyone at their last company for being their best friends, close family, donated a kidney, etc. If it was truly that great, why are you leaving?

    7) "HUSTLE AND GET THAT $$"

    8) Posts about exercising and working out in the gym. How is this even business related?

    9) PASSIVE INCOME. GENERATE CASH FLOW! INVEST IN REAL ESTATE! Poster has zero real estate experience and does not have any investing credentials.

    10) none of them are actually rich, successful, or have any proven track record yet they seek so much attention

    11) Pointless platitudes that are marketed as courageous but in reality are just common sense. "You should be paid what you are worth at your company". 20,000 upvotes. No shit.

    12) Inspirational posts about how Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos once started off as not rich. Now, they are rich. Conveniently leaves out both of them were already incredibly successful and extraordinary people by the time they started their respective ventures.

    13) "HERE'S HOW YOU BECOME A MILLIONAIRE: Sell a product for $100,000 ten times. How do you sell a product for $100,000? Create something that is worth $100,000." Wow, why didn't I think of that?

    14) Posts about waking up at 4:30 AM to "get shit done". No. That's what my day is for.

    15) First statement. New line. Second statement. New line. Third statement. New line...

The proliferation of social media marketing has reached a boiling point where consumers are inundated with annoying "hustlers" who peddle subpar products and misleading advice. It's useless at best and outright deceitful at worst. On average, it's become incredibly annoying.

Edit: Will update list if I think of anything else.

How many young aspiring entrepreneurs are there in this Reddit?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 01:08 AM PDT

Trying to build some new contacts and friends that have the same drive as me. Don't have to live in the same area, just curious.

I think someone should make a Discord for Young Entrepreneurs to make friends, chat, speak on business and overall feel the community. I would be interested in being an admin. Sadly I don't have a gift for creating forums like that but management is my cup of tea. Let me know and we can bring a few guys and girl to the table and creat one!

Hopefully this doesn't go against any guidelines, please don't ban me or delete the post!!!!

[Edit] Please upvote so young adults, kids, teens and just anyone who needs a little push to start becoming an entrepreneur can see this and feel motivated or just not alone!!!!!

[Edit] When I say young I mean teenage to very early 20s.

[Edit] I'm not offering any services lol, I'm really only interested in creating connections with people in the industry and talking to people.

230 views on my Etsy page, 0 buyers...

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:15 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm a student however in my free time I run a hobby business, I recently started selling some of my handcrafted products on Etsy, I went around and promoted the page to multiple people, gaining 230 views in under a week however I've had no sales, I've had tones of people who have said to me "I love you're products 100% buying one" however none sold... I'm not sure what I'm missing/doing wrong, is it because my page is new and I only have 2 products on there? Is it my pricing? Is it because I have 0 reviews due to not having any customers? I'm lost any advice would be great :)

If you are interested comment so we can make this happen! Too many of us don't have the right friends and motivation from people our age. People doubt us and undermine our ability to think.

Figured this would be a good place to keep an open discussion and meet likeminded people, since reddit threads tend to die out a few days after they're posted.

For the sake of transparency, the group is brand now, there's no self promotion or monetization, and I've got no agenda other than I want to meet other people like me :)

Need advice on how to grow my dads company

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

My dad has a sign company that he has built starting in 2001. We are pretty consistently busy but have a lot of issues with becoming profitable. Most months we break even after paying our overhead, payroll etc. and have almost nothing in savings. I think our operations are very inefficient and we spend way too much time on unbillable hours such as design, sales and bookkeeping. My dad is a VERY DIY type of person and refuses to hire anybody to help with these things even though him and I would be better suited doing other things around the shop. He also is very hesitant to hire employees to help us grow, even though we would be able to generate more sales if we spent less time doing installs and grunt work. Neither of us have a business degree or any sort of education on the matter except for hands on experience. And because of this, he refuses to listen to my ideas to grow because he has more experience.

Does anybody have advice on how we might become more profitable? How I may convince him to try new ideas? I realize this post is very vague so if you need more details please ask me. This business is very important to me and to him so I want to grow and become more profitable. Thank you in advance.

Looking for tips, advice or information for starting a business in a niche market (and during Covid)!

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT

I've had the unfortunate timing of starting an aquarium sales and cleaning service in January. Now with Covid, I am finding it particularly challenging to find new clients. I am looking for any sort of tips or advice anyone may have on how to advertise to new potential clients

    Some back ground info:

I live in a wealthy area where I don't believe people are struggling financially at this point.

I have a website, phone number, google listings, and Facebook ads.

So far we have tried cold calling local businesses and handing out fliers to local houses (we have stopped since Covid got worse) and offices.

With such limited in person contact, it is proving very difficult to find an audience with potential interest. Has anyone had any similar experiences with any advice or tips?

Has anyone else started a small business in a niche market, if so, what worked for you when you first started off? How did you find your first handful of clients?

Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated. This is just meant to be a discussion!

Curious if anyone here has experience moving from a small restaurant company to beginning to sell franchises for the same restaurant company?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I have worked with/for a certain restaurant company for about 8 years now. We have done very well and have been approached multiple times by random parties that were interested in knowing if we sold franchises at all. We did not at that time, and still do not as of yet.

I am not the owner but I do work closely with the owner. We have been discussing this a lot more lately and he is about where he wants to be to begin doing this.

One person he knows pointed him at a company, EquiCorp, that they claim would come in for a set fee (say $30,000) and get us set up and ready to begin franchising. They have people that have done this many times over, but reading their site it sounds like they have a lot more control than mere consultants.

I am curious if anyone here has any experience with this? Can you point me in a direction to learn more about this? We want to learn how to go about this process of franchising and the best way to learn and organize for this process. Would it be by hiring outside consultants or are there some really good resources we could use to learn and do it ourselves?

Thanks for any input. I apologize if any of that is confusing. Please ask questions if it was!

The IRS paid us $30k to hire 6 people

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:44 AM PDT

Hey, we just ramped up hiring (brought on six more AEs and a new support team) and we were able to take advantage of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit for most of our hires.

TLDR: If you hire somebody that's been unemployed for the previous 27 weeks, the gov't will give you $5k per hire, no questions asked. We ~made~ $30k hiring six people. There are a bunch of other ways an employee can qualify for the WOTC but the unemployment one worked for us.

You don't have to be profitable (which is nice for me), you can claim the credits against payroll taxes paid in previous years so the IRS will just cut you a check for $30-50k after you file. We used a provider called Mainstreet (they downloaded our Gusto data and did it all for us) but there are a few out there, your CPA might be able to do it too.

    haaaaapppyyy hiring ✨

Nervous about starting my Business degree, Any tips?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:30 PM PDT

I'm honestly very nervous that I might not be able to complete the Accounting Program at My university even though I haven't even started yet.

My mom always gets calls from relatives asking about what I will be doing after university and when she responds with "Accounting" they always tell her how hard Accounting is and that they should talk to me about it and maybe reconsider it. Literally this morning my mom got a call from a relative saying that her son only lasted 6 months at the same university I'm going to for accounting and is now doing auto work on cars with his dads company instead.

Is Accounting degree really that hard, it can't be harder then bachelors of science, right? I'm honestly very concerned that I might have to drop out and honestly I'm not very smart academically. My relatives are making it seem as if Accounting degree is very hard to get and it's honestly making me very nervous and stressed.

How do I maintain my early bedtime now that I'm dating again?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT

After years of getting up at 8 and going to bed at midnight, I finally switched back to 6am and 10pm respectively.

I love getting up at 6 for a number of reasons. I seem to get more work done during the day and I just feel more on top of things. I can also get to the laundry machines in my building before anyone else, which is not a little thing. If I don't get there first, I end up wasting time waiting around.

I really seem to need about 8 hours of sleep to function at my best. When I start getting 6, I am much slower, less productive, and I expose myself up to catching a cold.

It's been easy while I'm single to maintain my sleep schedule, as I plan my social activities for weekends during the day or early evenings.

But now that I am dating again, I am finding it to be challenging. I realize I've never dated anyone and kept this schedule. If I'm going to bed at 10pm, I would have to leave at around 830pm, to get home, shower, and unwind. Which I admit does seem a bit extreme.

What are your thoughts? Should I insist on going home early even if it's really not the norm? Should I figure out a way to make 8am mornings work for me?

Need some advice on a screen printing business.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:16 AM PDT

Hi there, I know screen printing is almost everywhere and its a hard business to get into because of the competition, but me and my girlfriend decided to try it anyway, we are not gonna offer "print your own design" kind of thing, we want an online store where people will buy the designs we make, without offering people the means to print what they want since that's kind of everywhere.

We don't know exactly how to start and how to get some recognition, we have everything we need to start printing, from next week we start working on the website and by the end of August it should be ready. But until then, do you think we should start investing in some advertising? Should we try to sell locally like during fairs and fb marketplace to try the water?

We have some unique ideas about the "theme" we will be using and also we will be using raw, eco materials from the country we live in because we want it to be a product totally made with and from the countries materials.

One idea for the theme, or category or how you want to call it will be unique, which means that if you buy a tshirt from that category we will not print it again for someone else, we will also add some "traps" to avoid being copied and to determine whether the design is original or fake. Of course, they will be a little more expensive, even for us, but on the other hand, I am really annoyed to go buy some tshirt I like, go out, and see another 10 people with the same tshirt as me, and I'm sure lots of people are in the same boat.

We really need some advice, insights, tips and tricks or anything to grow our business at least a bit. If you can share the story of how you grew up your business please, feel free, even if its not necessarily about screen printing but something close to it, would be good enough.

Also, we are not necessarily looking to make it a full time job, unless, of course, some miracle happens, but some money on the side doing something that is fun for us, and to do it together is enough for us.

    I need a mentor

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Okay so I'm 19. I started my first business about a week ago now , it's a online fashion store using drop shipping. But I have three partners (best friends who have grew up hustling) I brought in and will be getting them to run my fragrance business and baby clothes business for me for a equal percentage. They are real hustles. I trust they will get it done. I'm not looking for someone to help me run my business I just want to be able to ask somebody questions about the business world. I have and will be doing the leg work of the research (been putting in 15 hour days ever since I started) and am not asking for a free person to use their ideas I just have a lot of questions and would like someone to be able to chat with them about to get their input I know that learning from other people's mistakes is way more efficient and optimal than going through and making them all myself. Even if it's just one call a week it would be amazing. I really appreciate all the advice y'all have me on the last post and would love to be able to get all of your feedbacks on my sites and see what I'm doing wrong and right parssy in your eyes. I come from a place where everything that is profitable is illegal and I do not plan on going the same route. And the problem with that is nobody around here is even versed period with business at this scale. If anyone who was successful or even failed (I know there are more lessons learned in failing than being successful) please just hit me up and we can schedule calls or whatever! I just need a mentor and I think that's the last piece of my puzzle! And I know the internet is full of people who say they know what they are talking about but don't so even advice on how to find a mentor would be great!

How you can get customers to do what you want

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 03:59 AM PDT

When you're trying to change behavior, be it in yourself, your company, or your customers, the following is a mistake:

    Change behavior + Change reason

It's tempting to want to change both the desired behavior as well as the reason for why that behavior must occur.

    That's a mistake.

Instead, change the behavior and let the subject have their own reason. Identify and work with that reason.

As my topology Professor said: "An example is worth a thousand theorems. Examples, examples, examples."

So here are a few examples:

    1. Behavior: Getting your kid to do their homework.

Reason: Because they should care about developing conscientiousness and discipline.

Solution: Instead, through digging, you learn that they have a different aspiration that you can use for that behavior. Namely, they don't want to have to redo the year and lose all their friends that go to the next grade.

    Use their aspiration, NOT yours!

    2. Behavior: You want people to wash their hands more.

Reason: You want to reduce people infecting each other and getting ill due to poor hygiëne.

Solution: Through digging, you learn people care little about hygiene. What they do care about is the opinion of other people. So you start marketing soap as a product that helps keep you clean and make it smell nice such that other people think of you favorably.

This is exactly what the first successful soap campaigns focused on. [1]

This is also how toothpaste is marketed. Anti bad breath with cavity prevention as a serendipitous side effect. The converse would not work.

    3. Behavior: Increase the sales of your product.

Reason: Because you devoted significant time to it and it's astonishing. Much better than the competition.

Solution: Through digging, you actually learn that your customers buy your product to virtue signal. That means a large part of the value is actually in the psychology not the technology. You should play into that with branding campaigns.

Btw, remember Apple's legendary 'Think Different' ad campaign with Gandhi, Einstein, etc..

    NOTES

[1] Here's a piece of Ogilvy copy for Dove in the mid-1900s: 'Darling, I'm having the most extraordinary experience, I'm head over heels in Dove!'

Actually a fascinating story that we can get into some other time, but Ogilvy had a difference of opinion on how soap should be branded than a few women that ran the Dove campaign in (perhaps the 80s or smth).

They wanted to use the science behind The Dove Bar in the ad, he didn't. But it actually ended up working.

Digital agency vs digital product, what's better in your opinion?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:36 AM PDT

Hi there, I'm a freelancer, digital agency owner (mainly providing web dev, SEO and SMM services) & owner of one product. I live in a country where expenses are really low, so I'm thinking to ditch and focus all my efforts on one thing.

The agency makes a lot of instant cash, whereas the product takes time to grow - the fact I know SEO & SMM has made it easier, but it's still demotivating to see revenue increase slowly, however the pro is it's stable, unlike agency.

I personally enjoy growing my product. Whereas when it comes to agency work, I like the experience of meeting new business owners & getting to work for them part-time which is a whole new experience & gives me inspiration/motivation to work on my own thing as well.

I know that focusing on 2 things at the same time is a recipe for disaster, so thought to ask here what's better in your opinion
