Why do you background check applicants?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:22 PM PDT

I hire felons and not only does that give me WOTC credits but they have been the hardest working employees for me. This has me stumped why do so many of you all background check and exclude what are potentially your best assets? Felons want a second chance and will work super hard to hold onto it.

Any limo service small business here?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:38 AM PDT

Hi, we are an independent limo service from San Francisco UrbanBCN We see significant drop in demand comparing to pre-covid times. Although, we have our own luxury cars and we do constant safety measure for our customers, demand is lower. Do you have similar experience? Do you offer some discount in order to increase demand? We don't feel it will change something in our segment.

Tomorrow I'm going to be cold calling every wholesale supplier in my area.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:10 PM PDT

I'm 90% done with all my legals so I can work legally in my area. I've decided to be a wholesale / resale supplier of parts and materials. I have a full background of almost 20 years in the trades and distribution so I know this like the back of my hand. Extremely confident.

I originally planned on going to these places in person, but it's really not required in my field especially with the Covid conundrum going on right now. I just have to call and register with their business via my permit to resale their product. I figure as long as the needle continues to move forward I don't need to worry about having everything 100% completed before making my first contacts. I'll figure out the business as it goes.

Just wanted to get this off my chest. I really have no one to talk to it about. No one understands my passion and while my wife supports me, she can't understand the ins and outs of creating a business from the ground up all by yourself. In my field you can't just run out and get started without the bare necessities or you'll get fined on the national, state, or local levels. Gotta be serious and cautious at the same time.

TL;DR: Tomorrow I'm reaching out to my first whole sale suppliers and I'm alone in this endeavor. I'm going to be a distributor of parts.

How to Fire Remote Staff During Covid?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:25 PM PDT

I'm firing an employee tomorrow. The official reason will be a shortage of work - but the actual reason is a shortage of them doing any useful work at all while working from home and billing me 10x the hours they are actually doing. Goal is to fire quickly with minimal drama - there will be tears, excuses, and pleas for sure with this one.

They live nearby to my office where I now have most people back in. I am pretty sure the person suspects a termination is coming. Do I call them into the office, with them now knowing they likely are being fired, then terminate them in the parking lot or fire in our small office where everyone else can hear? Do I go to their house and do it in person there? Also will have to call ahead to schedule that.

Calling and terminating over the phone seems simplest to me I don't really feel I owe them much explanation or notice as they've been stealing my money by not actually working much when at home. Is this too cold hearted?

I haven't given any formal warnings. They were passed on to one of my team managers (also remote) so they no longer directly report to me, but I did hire the person and feel I need to be the one to fire. I don't intend to bother with warnings as I already determined coaching through the problem is not worth the time. Slacking at home for weeks while reporting full hours is not excusable or deserving of coaching/notice.

    Landscapers?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:48 PM PDT

Hey, I'm doing some research to learn what I should really narrow in on now that I've officially left my inhouse role and am striking out on my own instead.

I'm a digital marketer looking to focus on landscaping companies.

I'm hoping to learn what landscaping company owners have found frustrating about working with, or looking for, online marketers to work with. Could anyone tip me off here?

Are there concerns you have that keep you from pulling the trigger?

Is there a general trend or practice you've found with marketers that you just don't like?

Just soaking in all I can to be sure I provide what's needed.

    Thanks everyone,

    Dustin

Evaluating Businesses for sale. How to identify a worthy buy? (wealth building)

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:39 PM PDT

To make a long story short- How can you determine a good "investment" decision based on financials vs. asking price? For example, if I'm looking at a laundromat selling for $350k that nets $100k/yr, is that a worthy buy? On the surface $100k a year sounds healthy but break-even would be 3.5 years which seems like a long time to wait.

My second concern is I'm trying to make the argument for owning a business instead of working a corporate job. But, in this hypothetical scenario, I'm struggling to justify borrowing a few hundred thousand dollars and effectively waiting 3.5 years to get a return versus borrowing nothing, having a salary and investing in the market.

Can anyone help me wrap my mind around this? Am I thinking of this the wrong way?

I'm not debating the psychological aspects of any of this. I worked in a corporate environment and hated it so I'm trying to build a case for owning a small business before I end up back in a cubicle.

    Thanks.

    Business idea

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:14 AM PDT

Let's look at businesses related to nutrition and fitness. As a customer, you pay a person to give you a diet plan that is supposed to make you drop few pounds. This makes people reluctant because they might be paying money for something that might not happen. What about a business that gives you everything, but the customer pays money based on the amount of weight they dropped. In this case, people are literally paying for the fat to go. Give me your thoughts.

Credit Card Processing and "High Risk" items

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Not sure where to post this, apologies if this isn't the correct subreddit.

In my business, I see LOTS of competitors selling our regular products, but also "high risk" items such as CBD and putting everything on one invoice and charging the customers credit card as normal.

How are they doing this, I know they aren't using a "high risk" processor, because the fees on the entire invoice would negate any profit they would be making.

Are they just slipping thru the cracking using their regular processor?

How would the processor even know that they are selling a few CBD items bundled into a giant order of regular items?

Has anyone business in this group used SEO services by this Australian business called VR Digital?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Guys, we have a small cleaning services business and have been approached by this Marketing Agency called VR Digital https://vrdigital.com.au

Our initial meeting with them went really well and it looks promising. But I have been burnt before as well by other agencies who made big promises, though this company is not making any big ones.

So, I thought I would check if anyone has used them before and has any positive or negative experience worth sharing about. A couple of case studies that they shared look good, but then they are charging on the higher side. So, though I want to go ahead with them to get a better online presence, at the same time I would like to do some due diligence.

Can someone pep me up for another round of job trials?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:43 PM PDT

I'm so very tired of it. I don't want to compromise and invest in another person who is a bad fit- I pick well but only because I'm ruthless, but I'm not a ruthless person by nature. My last two hires were hiring friends (yeah, bad idea)... So I'm trialling 5-6 people next week for the one job, and I'm already drained. Tips/anecdotes/vents all very welcome

Small business owner and also an independent contractor. Grant both ways?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:57 PM PDT

I was able to get the $1000 grant and a meager loan for my business, which, in my 3 short years have never drawn a check from. (Paid down lots of debt and trying to grow.) I also draw paychecks from my independent construction labor (not a business) which is my main source of income. I recently filed jointly with my wife along with my company and I now understand that independent contractors are eligible for a grant. Any advice?

    Segmenting small business failure rates?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:13 PM PDT

I read a lot about failure rates of small businesses, in general and for specific business types.

Is anyone aware of failure rates looking at owner characteristics? For example, I hypothesize that the failure rate for seasoned restauranteurs is significantly lower than for people who wake up one day and say "oh I want to open a breakfast place." And that the failure rate for experienced professionals is significantly lower than for individuals without any real-world experience. Maybe these assumptions are wrong, though.

Data about people driving through your area?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:26 PM PDT

I am looking at starting a service business that would benefit from being near road(s) with high volume. Preferably, in an area where wealthy city workers commute from the suburbs. I'd love to be able to visualize some of this data, does anyone know where I can get this?

    I'm looking for:

    • Traffic data: How many cars drive by on each road daily/weekly and at what hours
    • Average commute from certain areas
    • Income data: Income of drivers.

I know that not one source will have this all, but I'd love some suggestions of where to start!

Any RV storage owners in here?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:37 AM PDT

Hello and good morning. We live on the Denver area and around here RV storage is a little tough to find and expensive. My wife and I are thinking of possibly starting an RV storage yard. We rent a lot at an RV facility that is basically a flat parcel of land with a fence around it and recycled asphalt, a few cameras, nice outhouse, ice machine, water access and sewage dump. It seems like this is fairly typical here and most are close to capacity if not full. We are just starting our initial research but I thought I would put a post up here to see if anyone with experience had any thoughts, advice or feedback. We don't currently have a lot but are getting closer and closer to starting to look. We have been talking about doing this for the last year or so and it's to the point where we both want to start researching.

Thanks in advance for anyone with any feedback!

Need 2nd business ideas — something not physically demanding.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:50 PM PDT

I am owner/operator of a cleaning business. I just turned 25. My "business" is very reputable. Has close to 100 5 star google reviews. It's my 2nd yr doing this. I netted 36k my first yr (grossed 55k). I think I'll make about the same this yr. Idk if that's due to covid or not. Idk anymore if that's me making an excuse for my lack of growth.

Honestly I have been wracking my brain lately. I was talking to someone about "my business" the other day and they kind of gave me a cold hard reality check. I don't know what to believe anymore to be honest. They told me... at the income level my line of work is bringing in... I don't own a business, I own a job. And it made me think... wow... how much more work do I have to do to net 80k a yr.

8/10 I make a minimum of $300 a day when I work. But I don't work 5 days a week every WEEK. Today I made $380 cash for 7 hrs of work (job was supposed to take 5 hrs... had complications). Minus about $10 in materials and gas.

Yesterday I made $345 for 5 hrs of work. I've got another $675 worth of work scheduled for the week plus a $1,100 job up in the air for tomorrow (weather dependent). That's almost $2000 net in 1 week. Coming from $2 above minimum wage a couple yrs ago that's good. But the problem is... that's not every week, every month so it balances out to a very mediocre wage. Roughly 40 grand a yr.

I want to continue to grow the cleaning business. I feel like I can get it to net 50k a yr without killing myself and being an owner/operator. But I'd also like a 2nd source of income that can bring in an extra 30k a yr that I can do myself. Preferably on the computer? Any thoughts on my situation..? Am I being a bitch?

The cleaning that I do isn't house cleaning. It's something that customers do only once or twice a yr max:

What kind of lawyer/tax/accounting person do I need to work with?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:51 PM PDT

Working on setting up a business, and getting the foundation in place - how to incorporate, taxes, banking, etc. Someone who can learn about my goals for the company, challenges that I face, and suggest the proper structure and approach to the incorporation, how/where to handle the taxes and accounting, etc.

What type of professional is this I need to look for to help me? (e.g. is this a lawyer? if so, what type of lawyer am I looking for?)

I realize "learn it myself" is an option, but I don't want to go down that path. I'm sure I'll learn plenty as I go through this. But I want to be certain this part is done correctly.

    Thanks...

My secure job vs Kiosk business

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:59 PM PDT

    Need your opinions please.

I work as an Software Engineer and make a decent salary, my job is pretty safe. But I am thinking of quitting and starting a Kiosk business selling Pretzels or Bubble tea.

I have absolutely zero experience running a business and with Covid affecting shopping mall footfall I am in doubt on whether to proceed, I want some outside perspectives.

This idea has been on my mind for 2 years.. through researching I still think the numbers work even during Covid. I have everything in place to take this forward, from kiosk design and business plans, suppliers, equipment lists, packaging, financials, uniform and more.

My shopping mall recieves 11 million footfall per year, which is roughly 210,000 per week. It's also connected to the train station to that part of city.

    1. Rent: €2,600 per month
    2. Lease term: 6 month
    3. Burnrate: €4,000 per month - sustainable upto 3 months.
    4. Minimum daily sales target: 40 units of main ticket item
    5. Staff: 1 and myself.

I have enough capital to run this at a loss for up to 3 months which is half of the lease. I have a good relationship with the shopping mall and they understand I may end the lease early should the business not work.

My back out plan would be to simply return to IT, although the job market is scarce I think my niche will get me rehired within 1-2 months. However I would have little to no personal savings left.

What else should I consider running a shopping mall kiosk business?

My little tent business is going to be on the local news. How can I capitalize my exposure?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:27 PM PDT

My tents are being used for a Make-a-wish type of deal for a cancer kids Birthday party. She informed me it's their 100th wish and are making it big and the media will be there. How can I capitalize on the exposure? She suggested a sign but I'm so unfathomably terrible at any sort of aesthetic sign/poster.

    What do you guys suggest?
