    Inflation of the early 1980s

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Inflation was very high in the early 80's, and peaked at 14.8% in 1980.

The situation was a bit different than the modern situation, pre-COVID:

    1. Inflation of up to 14.8% vs. 1-3%
    2. Federal deficit of -2.5% vs -4.6%
    3. Trade-weighted dollar positive in both cases
    4. Lowest unemployment rate of 5.7% vs. 3.5%

What caused such a drastic difference? We had lower unemployment and a larger deficit pre-COVID, yet inflation just didn't budge and interest rates have continued the post-1980 decline.

In your view, what contributed to it and are we susceptible to that today? Could it have been foreseen before the issues grew through 1980, or were they just risks that are always present?

(Please be aware I haven't given my views, because I don't want to bias results. I also don't know enough about the topic and therefore want to hear others more than myself.)
