    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Jul 07, 2020

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Today I sold the last of my NVDA shares. Its been a wild ride.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:18 AM PDT

None of my friends or family care but NVDA was one of the first trades I ever made (51 shares at $68). I cashed out my original investment at 140 a share, then a bit more at 270, then again at 360 and finally sold the remaining 12 shares I had today at 400 a share.

The valuation right now is too insane for me to continue to hold. While I love the company, there is no way that they should be ranked in the top 16 companies in the S&P in terms of market cap. They did 3.1B in revenue last quarter compared to intel who did 33B. I wish all my fellow NVDA holders good luck in the future, but personally believe they are priced to perfection in this market.

    Sold my NIO

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:55 AM PDT

I could've been greedy and stuck through and waited but at the beginning I bought at 4$ and said I would sell at 100% profit and as a new investor I wanted to make sure I stuck with what I said and not be greedy etc...time to buy something new and maybe invest in NIO later but for now I don't think so

From 100k in debt to 100k net worth in under a year

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I went from 100k in debt to 100k net-worth in under a year.
    https://imgur.com/cirwSW2

It wasn't easy, took a mental toll and would have rather done it slower. But I am glad I am done with it.

My resent earnings were mostly after I went long in tech stocks. The majority of my earnings were during COVID crash I went all in on undervalued stocks for which I had a really good understanding of their business model and knew it wasn't going to be affected much by COVID and even helped (e.g. GOOGL, MSFT). I also knew everyone was exaggerating and panicking, which made it easier for me to make the trades.

    Feel free to ask anything.

Before you buy Tesla please read this

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:59 PM PDT

I know FOMO is real. I've felt it, I've followed it, and I've been burned from FOMO. But please put the valuation of Tesla into perspective.

Tesla is worth 254 billion. Ford is worth 24.62 billion. GM is worth 36.82 billion

Tesla has 24 billion yearly revenues (trading 10.58x sales) Ford has 155 billion yearly revenues GM has 137 billion yearly revenues.

Tesla can dilute their stock by 10% to buy Ford, putting the stock price to just what it OPENED at TODAY. Tesla can dilute their stock by 15% to buy GM, putting their stock price to what it CLOSED at THURSDAY.

I know, I know. Tesla is growing exponentially and they MIGHT have 100 billion in revenue in 5 years. That's still 35% lower than Fords revenue. Tesla is profitable, and Ford isn't. That needs to be considered in the valuation, putting Tesla at a higher valuation than Ford. But is Tesla really worth 10x Ford, today? That's highly unlikely.

Tesla has grown 45% in 5 trading days. It's highly overbought and their trading higher than 70 RSI on nearly every single chart you can look at. It's also trading higher than its upper bollinger band. A pull back WILL happen. It might hit 1500 before the pull back, but it might not. The risk/reward is bad on Tesla at the AH price of 1414. It's highly risky right now. Please do not fall into the FOMO trap. I promise you you WILL NOT MISS OUT if you wait! You will be able to buy in cheaper. I think even bulls and bears can agree on this.

I'm bullish on Tesla for the long term, but I am currently short right now. It's just simply overran itself.

    Don't fall into FOMO.

And before someone says it, I don't think Tesla will buy Ford or GM, or that even they would sell. It's just for a perspective look.

    OSTK skyrocketing

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 01:34 PM PDT

Ostk is on a tear. In 2017 it touched $84 because the CEO than had showed interest in pouring cash in blockchain based business which did not fair well and the stock tanked. Now overstock won a contract to build a federal E commerce platform. I have a feeling it can definitely go past $50 now and maybe more then once it spiked public interest. What do you all think ?

    $DKNG

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:21 AM PDT

Is the returning of all major US sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) baked into the current price? Or do you believe the market is still heavily skeptical that professional sports may be sidelined longer than we believe?

I see the NBA has set dates for their Orlando play. NHL just passed their RTP plan and new CBA. MLB passed a 60-game season. And NFL is set to continue as normal.

    Stock Rec Thread

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:32 PM PDT

When I first started out I saw a thread on here asking for stock recommendations. The comments included SE, NET, LVGO, DDOG, FSLY, AMD, PENN, DKNG and the like -- all of which have rocketed up since that post.

SO LETS DO IT AGAIN! What are your 'get em now' plays? The comments on the thread all posted a small sales pitch as to why the person liked the stocks (for example NET & FSLY were recommended by someone working in that field)

    Currently holding on VSLR. Sell/Hold?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:33 AM PDT

So with the recent news of RUN having a potential deal in place to acquire VSLR, here are the facts on my shares:

    1. I am currently holding 200 shares of VSLR valued at $14.70 (current price @ approx. 10:30a) = $2,940.
    2. RUN is currently priced at approx. $26.70
    3. IF the deal was to be successful right now, my VSLR shares would be replaced with RUN @ .55/share; hence, the 200 shares of VSLR --> 110 shares of RUN valued @ 110*26.70 = approx. $2,940.

So, unless I want to hold shares of VSLR/RUN long-term, I should monitor both share prices and sell the current VSLR shares? Otherwise, holding 200 shares of VSLR or 110 shares of RUN would essentially be the same thing?

I've read all the other posts on VSLR, but haven't really found my answers. Apologies in advance as I know this is being discussed more frequently with the potential acquisition news out and thanks everybody in advance!

What are some market misconceptions people might have if they started investing during the coronavirus economy?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I started seriously investing back in early spring and from what I've gathered from different subreddit and general reading that some market behavior I've been taking advantage of isn't actually normal. What are some trends you've noticed that have been more prevalent since the coronavirus outbreak started that might dilute my logic when the market eventually does recover? I'm afraid I'm building a bad foundation as an investor by being in such a volatile market, and I want to be more aware.

Long-term (20+ years) higher risk plays?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:16 AM PDT

Currently have 3/4 of my money tied up in VTSAX with the remainder in individual stocks. As I have 20+ years for my investments I want to get into investments with higher growth opportunities than just tracking the S&P.

My current thinking is to move my mutual fund money into ETF's such as ARKW, ARKG, and SKYY. Want to hear some opinions on this move and if you would load up on different ETFs or purchase more individual stocks. Thanks in advance

    Working from home stocks

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:21 AM PDT

As more and more companies all over the world are switching to working remotely, some of the stocks get to take advantage of this change. I've been eyeing Citrix Systems and VMWare. Which stock do you think will perform best? Thinking of a long term holding and sustainable growth post COVID era is something to consider.

    EPD - Enterprise Product Partners

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:30 PM PDT

    Hey Everyone-

I am posting this here in the hopes that someone will be able to figure out what I'm missing, as this company seem to be extremely undervalued and trading at a discount.

EPD is a midstream natural gas and crude oil pipeline company. From my understanding they are the ones transferring, treating an processing the end product. Performing these specific services allows gives them the advantage of not be so affected by the volatile oil & gas prices since the vast majority of their revenue is brought in from a fee based structure.

EPD is one of (if not the) strongest midstream pipline companies in North America. Rock solid financials, and they sport a dividend over 10%. While most companies have been cutting their dividends EPD slightly increased theirs, and they provided guidance that indicates they'll do just fine with earnings right around the corner.

Here's the problem. Every single analysis and report I've read has nothing but stellar things to say about the company, a legit unicorn in a field that everyone is scared of currently. The price targets issued over the last 3-6 months price EPD at a minimum share price of $21-$22, a median of of $26, and a high target pushing $30.

They are currently trading at $17.80. They have struggled to break $18 for the last month and when they do it usually ends up closing at, or below, opening.

    What am I missing??

TL,DR: Share price is too low and the company seems like a homerun so clearly i'm missing a giant red flag.

Should this subject be taught in public schools?

I don't know anything about stocks, looking into it now after a family situation. I wanted the opinions of people on whether this information is truly priceless, or this is just as much a gamble as black jack. I know the current market isn't ideal right now.

What's your plan for the next months/years?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:24 AM PDT

Right now, there's a lot going on. We're at the start of a horrible earnings season. Tension between US and China. US Elections coming up between a crazy guy and a senile guy. So many companies are extremely overvalued.

So what do you think of the situation. Are you getting your money out? Are you spending it all and make decisions when something happens? Lowering your positions and hold a big cash position for a new crash / recession?

In my case, I was thinking about selling before elections and see how the consequences of the crisis would pay out. It's great that the Fed lends all that money, but it has to be paid off at some point as well. With lowered revenue and higher costs for adapting to the virus along with the stock market being this overvalued, I could see recession coming up.

But that would be timing the market, cause I would buy again at some point. That's why I decided to rearrange my portfolio a bit, focussing on small-mid cap companies with steady financials, active in growing sectors (web services, AI, digitalization of healthcare, fintech,...) and preferably IPO'd in the last 2 years. Those stocks wont fall that hard and would rebound pretty quick, so I'm pretty well set up holding for the next decade.

Companies like TSLA and NVDA are very high on my watchlist, they are the future imo. But there's no way I could buy into them right now at this valuation. They would get hit way too hard if the bubble breaks. I'm kinda dividing my watchlist into two sides. The ones buying right now and the ones to buy during a crash or not buy at all cause I've missed the boat.
