Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

Did you sell your business? What could you have done better to make it more valuable?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:04 PM PDT

    For example:

Did you bullet proof all of your intellectual property, purchase certain assets or remove certain debts?

What would you do if you could go back in time?

Any suggestions on a resource/book that will give me a place to start.

I plan to sell in 3-5 year's and would like to understand what it takes to prepare for that.

    Cheers!

Programmer looking to the future in startup world

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:22 PM PDT

    I'm a programmer

More recently I've been doing UX and UI and product management (managing teams of developers).

I feel like programming as a job isnt going away, but I question whether it will continue to pay what it does ($80-$150+ usd per as a freelancer).

I feel like these gold rush days will be done in 24-48 months.

So I'm wondering what's next and how can I get ahead before all ya coders are making $20/hr.

What can a well rounded coder (6-7 years full stack) with extensive startup experience and even additional management/ui/design/ux experience parlay into?

Is there anything somebody like me could do at VC firm without being a partner/investor?

Should I try to scale to an agency? Let other do the coding?

Just crawl my way up to product manager/CTO/management roles?

I'd like to start preparing for this future over he next 2-5 years.

    The 4-Word Startup

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Person A: "So what does your startup do?"

Person B: "Oh we use AI, machine learning and neural networks to gather data so we can form synergistic B2B solutions to the autobot messenger problem by creating great biohacking communities and disrupting the massive B2C platforms, in the cloud of course. We're also planning to add scooters and a delivery service around this idea."

Person A: Confused look and silence

    Person A: "Oh... Right..."

This scenario is often the case for new founders, including myself.

It's demoralising when you tell someone what your startup does... Only to get a completely confused stare in return.

If you're anything like me, this has happened to you a few times at least... And you've probably seen other founders going through it too.

Our first instinct is to blame other people - but it's our fault.

When you're starting out, it's hard to differentiate a good idea from a confusingly bad idea.

But unfortunately, you need to feel this embarrassing process over and over, to learn what a good idea actually is.

It's what led me to find the 'The 4-Word Startup' method.

I've personally gone through it more than a few times... Sharing an idea with people, only to get demoralised after seeing nothing but looks of confusion on people's faces.

I'm sure you know the look I'm talking about!

The truth is you need to get punched in the face over and over again (proverbially speaking!) until you finally wake up to your mistakes and find a better way forward.

For me, that was 'The 4-Word Startup' method which I want to share with you today...

So how did I go from blank, confused stares on peoples when I told them about my ideas... To consistently receiving that comforting "Aha, I get it! That's very cool." look that we so deeply crave?

    Well...

The weird thing I realised is that the best startups (and even big businesses) are quite simple.

So simple, in fact, that they can usually be summed up in 4 words or less.

    Here's how it works.

    Your startup solves a problem...

But what you need to do is describe the solution, in 4 words or less.

Let's look at some popular examples, to see what I mean...

    • Uber: Hail taxis from anywhere.

    • Amazon: The online everything store.

    • AirBnB: Rent other people's homes.

    • Paypal: Send money with email.

    • SpaceX: Reusable rockets.

    • Snapchat: Send self-destructing photos.

    • Dropbox: Cloud based file storage.

And you can keep practising this method by describing other companies or ideas this way.

Of course, you can do this with your own ideas too.

One of the best ways to remember and describe this process is through a Peter Thiel quote from Zero to One:

"A superior solution, to a specific problem."

From the examples above, you can see that each startup solved a specific problem. But you can describe their superior solutions in 4 words or less.

So as you get used to practicing this method, you'll notice yourself noticing specific problems around you...

And you should then try to describe the superior solution in 4 words or less.

Suddenly, you'll notice when you share ideas with people - they have that pleasant look of "I get it!" on their faces.

    Anyway...

I wanted to share this method so some of you can learn from my many mistakes... And avoid the many embarrassing moments I experienced!

    Thanks for reading.

P.S. here's the original post from my blog.

    How to be patient?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 08:11 PM PDT

I know I know, one of the main ingredients to success in anything is patience. However, as entrepreneurs, we know that it often take months if not years for the business to take off and some more years will be required for the business to be called a success.

I'm currently transiting from a salaried employee to a full-time entrepreneur. Long story short, I was let go, although I still have the choice to stay for a couple more months or to look for another job. I am very incline to work on my business full-time as I know it is my life-long passion. Also, my day job is extremely demanding and during busy times it's not uncommon to have 50-60 hours work week. As such, it will be impossible to build my business on the side (while maintaining my sanity). My question is, how do you deal with watching your savings balance getting lower by the day? I understand that it is unlikely to reap rewards during the business building phase. Can anyone share some tips and tricks to reframe my mindset? Or, is there a better plan (than to work full-time on my business) to work around it?

Who knows anyone who is successfully running this kind of "media" company?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:45 AM PDT

    Hello

I'm looking for details on how to allow someone else do live streams on my Facebook, Instagram, and Anchor.fm platforms - sort of like a weekly show - on a WIN-WIN basis.

The basic idea is: I provide the growth strategy while the person executes the actual presenting of the show.

The execution guy gets the benefits of doing what comes to him naturally, expands his personal Rolodex and gets a wider audience for his own products/services.

Please who knows anyone who has done something like this before? Where else would you suggest I post this to get feedback?

    ALL recommendations are welcome.

    Thank you

    Job Mismatch and Education Index

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:32 AM PDT

A website that would try it's best to solve job mismatch and increase the education index around the world.

Well I wanted something in the sense that new restaurants would give incentives for students who get good grades (they can decide what is the definition of good), I think this works both ways as a promotion for the new restaurant and it helps boost the students, even if it's just by a little. I think this would be very helpful to those students who are in a budget as it would grant them access to free food while improving their grades, I would want it to compete against LinkedIn, the website would be somewhat like Facebook and Reddit, but mainly for school and other topics. So I would want it to be diverse as possible to allow the students to see different jobs, you know those outside the typical "norm" jobs. While I would also invite companies to check on the students to see on who would they want to hire, I think it helps both ways as the student expands his horizon in the different jobs while big companies get to expand their information network. So it would in a sense give a platform for those students who have the talent but did not enroll in a prestigious school. While I think apps like forest could be incorporated it's a timer app that allows students to focus and they receive these coins in which, with a certain amount of coins you can exchange that for them to plant a tree. So in a sense you become environmental friendly, and I when the students move to the workforce the companies will hire them with are website so we could also create something like AirBnB to calculate the distance and average cost per month in that location.

What do you guys think? (If you wanna help me out, you could PM me) Currently looking for other startups in the food business who are willing to help me out.

    B2B Sale - Security Check

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 08:38 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!!

I'm the CTO and co-founder of a wellness startup and next week we're having one of the final calls with our first client before (hopefully) closing the deal. One of the calls will be with the Chief of Security of the client company and I was wondering what sort of questions should I expect? Should I maybe have a document ready with me that I can showcase?

I'm not really sure what to expect, so would if anyone with experience in B2B sales can give me some advice!! Thank you in advance.

    Next steps after product development

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:20 PM PDT

Hi people! Well my startup right now has finished developing our product its a mobile app. As part of testing we are hoping to release the app for very selective testing, (mostly friends will test it out, but we also plan to give it to some clients(people we dont rlly know)) do we require a terms and conditions, or any other legal paperwork for testing? if yes then what legal papers. Also what tools can we use to make these papers, consider that we have a very very very limited budget, definitely not enough to get a lawyer. Also if its important its an e-commerce platform of sorts

    Thanks

    Legal Terms

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:33 PM PDT

I am building a landing page to validate an idea/project for a potential startup/business, and I wish to use cookies to gather some info on users and see the website statistics, as well as a "contact form" and a "show interest" sections.

Do I need a "privacy policy" & "terms of conditions" pages as well?, even though I don't have an "office" location, nor a team, nor the product and just wish to test out the idea before committing or pivoting.

Or shall I just not collect Google Analytics and not have "Legal page on my landing-page?

I need a not-yet-made API, how do I startup an open source side project?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 04:41 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm a non-technical founder who got funded just by my previous business being successful after I took a traditional car dealer model and added technology to it.

My app I have funded is doing okay, but during the startup phase we'd like to have people create their own characters.

Not that we're using anyone's content in particular, but the way I can explain it is like this: If you input a bunch of cartoon variables (eye shape, hair styles, face shape, clothing, etc.) and you create a 'skeleto'n that those variables can be flawlessly stitched/mapped onto, could you create your own cartoon-making app?

For example: If I took all the facial features and cartoon variables from South Park, that means that people can create their own South Park character.

Then you can upload all the library of variables from Futurama so people can create their own Futurama character.

Of course using their content is copyright, but what if the app was just a third party and it was artists who created their own character creators? I couldn't find any apps that do this.

I think it sounds like a great idea and it would pair along with the app I'm currently working on. How would you guys get an open source started and get it uploaded to the app store asap? Should I maybe throw $10k or $20k at it to get it started? I am barely getting used of Github for the first time. I assume this would be a great spot?

I'm actually not interested in it other than using an API for the start of my app.

    Any recommendations would be awesome!

How to stay productive when you don’t feel like it

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:49 AM PDT

There are days when you have the desire and motivation to work, however, this is not one of those days. You just don't feel like working today, you have no energy left in the tank! I think it's human nature to resist getting things done every once in a while.

If this is happening frequently, you should check how you manage your energy and rethink about your goals, planning and what affects your lack of motivation.

These 3 approaches can help you to get things done even when you're on a bad day:

    • Focus on the bigger picture. Have in mind your goal for this month or year and remind yourself that whatever you contribute today will matter at the end.
    • Learn how to avoid procrastination. In a nutshell, make the thing you are doing more appealing to you if this is not possible try to lie to your brain by making more appealing.
    • Embrace that today you're not productive. There's nothing wrong about it. If today you had to come up with new creative and disruptive ideas, don't force it. Disconnect and tomorrow will be a better day. Replace that creative thinking by other mundane or mechanical tasks.
    • If there is some kind of urgency. Set a time frame and stick to it. Use one of this time management tools like Pomodoro Technique. You will get momentum as you start working.

I hope these mindsets and techniques offer value to you and help you to still produce in the foggy days. Let me know your opinion in the comments if it was valuable to you!

I just graduated high school and need to raise seed funding. What can I do?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:25 PM PDT

I live in a Middle Eastern country with quite a AIs and VCs. But the develop, deploy and market the product, we need around USD 15,000. I've been reading that it would be a waste of time to even contact AIs since the amount is low, and I should be raising such money through 'friends and family'. But I'm not in a position to do so.

I've looked at incubators and most aren't accepting any projects for a good period of time. Any advice?

However there are a couple of things not working in my favor - solo employee, ARR around ~150K at the moment. What are my best options to raise funds ?

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

After college, I want to join a company that develops and commissions the construction of a new type of power plants. My goal is to move up to the upper management and maybe even become CEO. Should I major in MechE or systems engineering?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:01 AM PDT

I'm very passionate about getting clean energy deployed on a large scale, and there's this newish start up that's claiming it can do so. It's recieved a hefty amount of backing, has operated a demo plant, and is building a commercial plant that'll hopefully be done by 2022. I want to join the company and move into some of the higher up positions once I graduate from college. Any advice on how I should do this? What should I be majoring in? Please note that I'd also be acquiring my MBA in college alongside and major I pick. Also, whichever of the two options (MechE or systems) I don't major it, I'd likely try to minor in that.
