My boyfriends business is taking a toll on our relationship

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 10:12 AM PDT

I need advice on whether I need to be more patient and understanding with him or if there is something I can do differently to help solve this issue.

My boyfriend (31M) and I (32F) have been together for 3.5 years. About 10 years ago, he started an auto detailing business from his garage for extra money. He got really good at it, so 2 and a half years ago he quit his job to focus on the auto detailing business and do that full time. I fully supported it and was super excited for him. He runs the business all on his own which I completely and fully understand that owning your own business (especially by yourself) is a lot of work, very stressful and requires a lot of long hours. He runs the business from our home (our detached garage behind our house) so he never fully gets to "get away from work", which I think adds on to all the other difficulties we are having.

He loves helping people and is very smart. He isn't afraid of taking on new challenges and learning new skills (some of the things I love about him) however, I feel like this is starting to become an issue within his business. He never says no to anything and then he ends up taking on too much at once and overwhelming himself to an extreme level. He will get so stressed and overwhelmed that he will stay up for DAYS at a time and then crash for sometimes up to 24 hours (I'll get to that in a moment). Instead of focusing primarily on detailing like what he built his business up to be, he will also take on body work, upholstery, paint, mechanical work, ordering and installing parts for the vehicle, and anything else the customer or anybody asks for. It's practically a brand new vehicle when he gives it back. Looking from an outside perspective, it's great that he does that and tries to help out with as much stuff as he can, but 95% of the time, he gives an unrealistic turnaround time cause he thinks it will be easier than it is, which it NEVER is and it NEVER goes as planned, which then puts him extremely far behind on every other vehicle he has tons of things to do on, which then leads to the customer getting angry cause it's taking way longer than he promised and that ends up stressing him out even more. People think our driveway is a small car lot because we constantly have so many different cars parked here for days and days, sometimes weeks cause that's how long it will take him to finish them when he ususlly tells them it will be done in a day or 2. It's just a vicious circle. It just causes problems for himself, the customer, and our family. All this stress gets taken out on me usually too. Just the other day I said "if you happen to have a little bit of free time tomorrow evening, the town's fireworks are going on. Maybe we can take the kids". He got mad and yelled at me saying I was stressing him out by reminding him how much stuff he needed to get done by then. I understand having a hard working man is nothing to take for granted and I don't want to sound selfish, but when you get to make your own schedule, why does he make it like this? He works every....single....day....all...day....long, while me and the kids get the back burner. When is it too much? I can't remember the last time we spent a whole day together as a family. I can't remember the last time me and him even relaxed together for more than 15 minutes and had movie night or went to bed together. I can barely get him to sit down for dinner at home before he is back in the shop working. When we go out to eat, hes on his phone messaging about work. Anytime we do get time together, it usually starts with "we can do so and so for this long but then I gotta get back in the shop". Me and the kids only got to spend about 5 hours with him on Fathers Day. That was the longest we have gotten to spend with him in awhile. The rest of the day he was either sleeping or working. I want to be supportive but it gets really hard sometimes and really lonely. I have tried helping out in the shop with him, but I don't know much about cars and he is usually super rushed running around and I feel like I just get in his way and he usually says he'd rather just do it himself anyway. All this stress and time away from family barely makes him money too. He was hanging on by a thread before I moved in and since then I've had to carry the load of the bills and necessities for the family. I've told him he needs to raise his prices or start telling people no, which he usually agrees about, but he never actually does anything to change the cycle.

The 2nd thing is his sleep schedule. I've known him since we were kids and he's always been a night owl. He worked night shifts the majority of his adult life so it's what he is use to and likes I guess, but all the stress and work he puts on himself now I think is making it worse. He will stay up for 35+ hours straight sometimes. He will slam red bull and monster energy drinks the whole time to stay awake all day and all night to work and get vehicles done. He does pretty much everyday. He will finally crash eventually and then will sleep for 12 hours or more. There have been a few times where it was a full 24 hours. He will not wake up for anything when he is sleeping either. He will ask me to wake him up at a certain time cause he needs to work or has an appointment, and i dont mind trying to wake him up when he asks me to or needs me to, but I will have to end up trying for HOURS, sometime all day, and he will not get up until he wants to. He sometimes will get mad at me, tell me to leave him alone and then blames me cause he didn't wake up on time and will say that I got him further behind than he already was. Then he is crabby and rushing around the moment he gets out of bed at 5 or 6pm after his phone has been blowing up all day. This has been going on for years. I have tried being nice, I have tried being loud, I have tried being mean, I have tried bringing him food, i have tried seeing if the kids could wake him up, I have tried being cute and romantic, i have tried being considerate and think maybe he just needs to catch up on sleep, I have tried everything I can think of other than dumping water on his head, but nothing works and he just tells me I need to try harder. His customers will stop by the house during the normal daytime hours while he is sound asleep and will ask me why their vehicle isn't done yet, or why he didnt show up for their appointment or why he hasn't returned their phone calls and I have to cover for him, or if he does actually wake up to talk to customer he will go back to sleep after they leave. Even the kids who are 5 and 8 just know their dad as sleeping and working. Recently I have been getting really fed up with it all so I quit trying. I told him he is a 31 year old grown man and father... I'm not his mother or babysitter and he needs to take responsibility for his time management better. He has barely spoken to me since. He told me I'm against him and his business and I cost him $200 today since I didn't wake him up. Told me I am no help to him and that I do nothing. I told him I'm tired of enabling his unhealthy sleeping and work habits and he needs to figure it out. He told me "Yeah thanks...No offense, but I don't think your work related advice is anything I should follow..."

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I can't keep going through this cycle. Do I need to be more understanding and patient since he is under so much pressure all the time, or do I need to keep standing my ground? I don't want him thinking I'm against him or don't want to help, that's the complete opposite of what I want, that's why I'm here. Any advice would be great :(

TL;DR - my boyfriend owns a business. He over works himself and puts it above everything else in his life and blames me when it doesn't go right.

Employee fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits and refusing to return to work. Advice needed.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:24 AM PDT

I furloughed my employees for about 2 weeks due to covid-19. I reopened my restaurant and all of my employees, but one, returned to work.

The employee who is not returning claims to have a "weak immune system" and is therefor high risk for covid-19. She has never mentioned anything about a "weak immune system" before in the 8 months she has worked for me. She has only called out sick twice, which is lower than average. No doctor's note to corroborate her reason. She is 17.

So I take her word for it, but weeks later my other employees let me know that they've seen her on Snapchat going out to the beach, hanging out with friends, and having a good time while on Unemployment and NOT practicing social distancing with her "weak immune system".

I'm not entirely sure what to do now because she seems to be a conniving spiteful person (she reported me for telling employees to return to work during covid!)

    1. If I fire her, with cause, she will probably do something irrational to try and hurt my business.

    2. I've reported her for unemployment fraud, and a part of me thinks I should just not do anything and let her continue to collect unemployment - hopefully the state will take care of their business with regards to fraud.

But what if the state does nothing? A part of me wants revenge on her but I think the most important thing is to just protect the business.

Videos, books etc to help me learn?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Hello! For context I'm a barely 17yr old who graduated high school a week ago. Since everything is closed down at the moment it has given me time to finally work on my small business I've been thinking about almost non-stop for I can't even remember how long now. However, nobody in my family or group of friends knows anything about starting a business and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the learning curve. I was hoping some of you folks could possibly assist by suggesting some books, videos, YouTube channels, etc that will help me manage my learning and take notes and stuff like that. Keep in mind I have so little knowledge about this that the smallest most obvious things, I probably don't know yet. Anything helps, and thanks a ton!

    Selling out during virus

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:06 PM PDT

I just want out. Everything is so complicated and stressful. Ive been doing this 19 years and i am jist so over it. I was so much happier when i was at home during the shut down. Of course i was drawing $827 a week which wasnt bad money when you have no debt.

I think there are people i lnow who might buy me out but i hesitate to put it out there that i want to sell. Cant start drawing SS for 1 year and 11 months.

I think i can figure out something to get by though. Husband doesnt want me to do it but he retired 3 years ago and i didnt want him to so he can suck it. He spends his days now playing around on facebook and taking naps while i rip and run and cant get away from phone text or email for even one damn day.

I HAVE NO FUN IN MY LIFE. NONE. The last time i felt this way i pitched the drunk to end all drunks. I was 27, took off with a handsome crazy person, leaving job and school, married the crazy dude when i had never bothered to divorce my first husband, hid out at a cabin by a lake staying shit-face drunk and skinny dipping all day. I fantasize now about just getting in one of my vans and taking off and just never coming back. I am.overwhemed and really down and i just want to give up and run away.

Forgive the typos. I wss in such a foul mood i took 2 nerve pills, something i never do.

As you can see im not in the best mental state to sell now. Yet i feel like i may run the business into the ground if i have to keep doing it. More and more i want to tell difficult clients to fuck off, so there is a very real danger of ruining the reputation ive worked so hard for because im just sick of it.

PLEASE HELP- CA Employer trying to help my employees- need help with removing my payroll company EDD access

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:14 PM PDT

As an employer of a business-I have been having a lot of problems trying to help my employees through this difficult time and I'm extremely disappointed in the payroll service I am using. Often times they are unresponsive. My question is if I set up an CA Employer EDD account with another Payroll Company or attempt to setup an CA Employer EDD account myself, will that restrict or lock out my previous payroll Company's access to my employer information? How can I remove their access to my payroll tax and EDD benefit information. How long will it take to remove them from access? Thank you very much for your responses in advance! This is the site I am trying to use: https://eddservices.edd.ca.gov/sides/WebApp/NotRegistered

Using a loan for startup costs

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I was thinking of getting a personal loan for my legal fees and starting inventory. Around 8-10k. Best offer I can get is 16% over 3 years. Of course if I'm able to pay off sooner then it would be a little better.

I know it's a little higher than I would have liked but it can really get things going for me. I'm afraid it would take me much longer to get rolling if I was using my own money. I have an emergency fund but at times like this I really don't think it'd be smart to dip into that.

Anyone have experience starting out like this? Am I making a mistake? TIA

Pay off credit card, or save money for tax season

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 11:12 PM PDT

I am a new business owner (second year) and previously, I used a savings account to store 25% of my earnings for upcoming tax season. I owe 12k in a line of credit and I have about 6k left on my credit card (down from 15k in March! :)) Last year i paid my taxes through the bank directly from my savings account. I am assuming I can pay taxes with my credit card next time? If this is the case, shouldn't I just put that money from my savings into that credit card and line of credit? I have 5k right now in the savings account.

    Thanks for reading!

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to QuickBooks?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT

I'm starting out my own business. I have been in operation for a little while now but would like to get more organized with the paperwork.

Right now I'm just looking for:

    - Invoice Creation

    - Expense Tracking

    - Bills Tracking

    - etc...

I'm a solo operation so I don't need anything fancy. Quickbooks is $25/mn. I found 100 alternatives online but not sure which is a good fit.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do US office affect LLC taxes for non residents ?

    Hi there,

I want to form an LLC in missouri to start publishing my games on steam , i'm not a US citizen and won't do business there , just need the LLC for my royalties ... (and the royalties are 30% withheld from the source)

but when I want to register in missouri website , they said I must put a US address in Principal Place Of Business , my registered agent agreed to use their address , but , I won't do business there or be there.

    • how am I supposed to put a US address if my business isn't there?
    • Will that change how am I being treated ? (I'll be treated like a us person or something for tax purposes ...) or it's just for mail and privacy ...
    • and one more thing please , since my income is withheld from the source , do I need to report personal income to the IRS or Missouri state ?

(the registered address it's not exclusive for me , it's for all their clients)

    thanks

    Online bookkeeping business. Advice?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm a college graduate with a bachelor's in accounting. During my free time, I'm studying for the CPA exam. I currently work at an accounting firm where I am in charge of the bookkeeping of various clients + other accounting duties. I know the process of starting a business in terms of legal documents, but I would like some advice as to if this would be something worth doing so.

Only reason I would like my own business is to start creating a client base for myself as my ultimate goal is to open my own CPA practice that will provide services such as this and more. I know I have to start somewhere, but would like the input of anyone who has similar businesses or advice in starting your first business. I don't want to think of the what-ifs, but I also don't want to throw myself in a hole without caution. Thank you.

    Automate my business

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:34 AM PDT

Not sure how to go about doing it and was wondering if anyone here had some insight. I've been building a powerwashing bussiness from the ground up for a couple summers now. Have steady bussiness all summer long it's powerwashing I should mention. But I would like to automate it so I can move on to starting a second business in the summer. My plan is to hire highschool kids for like 10-12 bucks an hour to work for my business on their summer breaks so I'm totally free in the summer to start up another business. How would you go about doing it. I of course would have to find some way to train them so they don't destroy things and give them a run down of chemicals and tools and a bussiness credit card incase machines run out of gas or they need a tool and have a packet of different job types and what chemicals and how much pressure to use on different things. I have a work truck and trailer they would use and just come hop in everyday and be off for the day on jobs. Just looking for some insight on how you would do it.

    UK shipping for small business

Looking into the best shipping options for a business. I'm not entirely sure how many parcels I'll be shipping at the start, I guess it depends on how heavily I'm able to market the product. What would be the best way/company to use for shipping small parcels in the UK?

    How do contractors get business?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 03:37 PM PDT

    Hi all,

this may be a stupid question, in the UK I see many workers on sides of roads doing jobs like laying out new pavements, putting up fences and other things like that.

How do they actually get work, where do they advertise?

I don't see them advertising anywhere, thats why I'm unsure how they get contracts.

    Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience with Adsy or otherwise paying for blog posts?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:14 PM PDT

Adsy is a "marketplace" that connects people with blogs with people who are looking to market their content or service.

My website could really use a boost, I'd provide the content and all I'd need is placement. I guess I have a couple questions, 1) Are there any immediate red flags here? I can filter by blog type so that my content will appear on relevant blogs, which I would hope means my SEO doesn't get dinged and 2) Should I be paying premium rates for placements on blogs with higher Domain Authority? I'm assuming this is quality over quantity as far as having fewer posts on better blogs..

Sole Proprietorship or Incorporation: Lawn and Garden Care

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:10 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I have a plan to start my lawn and garden care business on the side while I work my full time job. I plan on slowly building it up until I can quit my regular job and going landscaper full time, and when it comes to long term, I'd want to hire employees and all that Jazz. I currently have an opportunity to bid on a small commercial property to maintain and I am based out of British Columbia, Canada.

I want to ask you guys for some advice whether I should start as a sole proprietor then build up to incorporating my business, or if I should just incorporate right off the bat. I understand unlimited liabilities under proprietorship and name protection when incorporating but I want to have a better idea of what would be a better choice regarding the position I'm in. I understand that this is not all that is entailed in the two, I'm still continuing research on the subject.

I appreciate any tips, advice, opinions or experiences you can give a young and eager potential entrepreneur and I hope you all are doing well during this pandemic!

Cost of a new phone system

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hello! I've got a quick question. Has anybody installed a new phone system at their business in the last few years? Our system is very antiquated, set up in the early 2000s. It's a relatively small system, we have 10 officers with phones in them, and an 800 number that we use basic features on such as putting customers on hold, call forwarding, and a voicemail system.

I want to update our system, and hopefully be able to add a feature where employees can work from home and I can route calls to their cell phones. Does anyone have any idea about how much this would cost? The other difficult part is we are located somewhere with no cell phone service, so the system would need to be a landline system, or if there is an option for a fully wireless system, I could have the employees working remotely. Any help is appreciated!
