Is umbrella insurance worth it? Insurance

    Is umbrella insurance worth it?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:17 PM PDT

Six months ago my mother was the at fault driver in a very bad wreck. Fortunately minor injuries even though one car was totaled and her car was not totaled but had 15,000 in damages. Since her car accident, it has made me look at my own policy.

Currently I have motorists mutual 500,000 liability and UIM on my 2016 Subaru Forester. I have gap coverage on my forester as well. I started shopping around for new auto and home insurance. State Farm offers 250,000 liability and uim. They also have umbrella 1 million policy for 150 a year that covers me anywhere in the world.

Nationwide is a 300,000 policy for liability and UIM. Their umbrella policy is roughly 300 a year.

It's my understanding that umbrellas are a safety net. I am 32 single and own my $65,000 condo. My debt is minimal and have quite a bit of cash.

I hope I don't ever get in a fatal wreck or a bad one but if I do is an umbrella policy worth it? How do I best protect someone from going after my home and other assets?

    Is an attorney worth it?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:03 AM PDT

I was in a car accident where I hit someone that ran a red light. The person I hit is claiming that she had a green but myself and the 2 witnesses are all saying she ran the red. The insurance agents from both companies all seem to be in agreement that this will end up with me being at no fault. I've been to urgent care and I have lower back issues and whiplash. I don't think it's too severe but it has been impeding my life. I'm at a stay at home parent with a 1 and 3 year old and picking them up causes pain. Some people in my life have been encouraging me to get an attorney but since it seems that the insurance companies have been working so well with me so far I am not sure if getting an attorney would be worth the hassle. Anyone have any experience with using an attorney for this type of injury? Is it worth it?

    Employer cancelled insurance without notice

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:16 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm curious about an issue I'm having with my employer/insurance company. I was just on maternity leave, started end of January returned June 8. I had a very complicated delivery on March 8th and my son had to have surgery 2 months after he was born. I added my son to my insurance with my employer within 30 days of him being born, as instructed by his surgeon. After that all of his medical expenses and mine were covered. Including preapprovals.

Fast forward to June 26 and I had to have a medical procedure related to my pregnancy/delivery. My doctors office got the approval before hand and I was scheduled and had the procedure. However on the end of that day I was checking my insurance online and it said that my insurance was canceled and post dated to February 29. Here's the issue, if it's post dated what happens to all of the already paid for medical bills? The hospital charge insurance $200,000 for our hospital stay. Now I can't take my son to get his immunizations and I can't get my medications and follow up Drs appointments done unless I cash pay. I'm also starting to get bills from my sons surgery, which should have been paid already.

My concern/question is: is an insurance company allowed to do that? When I called them they said it was from nonpayment. I was under the impression that it was being paid through my short term disability via auto deduction. In addition to that When I called them to add my son to my insurance they didn't tell me that he was at risk, nor I was at risk of losing the insurance due to nonpayment. I didn't get any other notifications. Although I have the correct email, phone number, and address on file because they communicated with me about opting into my insurance plan after my son was born.

I'm going through an appeals process now. But I keep thinking that it's not allowed... then canceling my insurance without notifications or offering Cobra.

Any feedback would be great! Thank you I'm advance for any help.

Can a medical deductible that’s been met be revoked mid year?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:05 PM PDT

Spouse takes a very expensive arthritis injection. He had a $3K, calendar year, combined medical and Rx deductible. He also uses a drug company copay assistance program which states covers deductibles.

His deductible was met very early in the year. The copay assistance program essentially paid most of his deductible. The next 3 months, his deductible is still met and I have EOBs to prove deductible is met. Suddenly and without warning, the deductible is reversed, now he owes the nearly the full deductible amount again.

He calls united healthcare, and no one knows what's going on and over an hour and 3 reps later, he's turfed to optum Rx specialty pharmacy. Pharmacy says the drug assistance company revoked their payment.

Called Drug assistance program, where staff member stated the assistance company does not revoke payment, ever. So here we are, stuck.

    What's going on?

What steps should we take next to make deductible accurate again?

Bumper knocked off in hit and run (parked). Should I claim?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:58 PM PDT

Just found out that my bumper was knocked off while parked on the street outside of my home. Could have happened any time Sunday and today. No witnesses.

I tried to re-attach it on my own but some of the retaining clips are broken and it seems impossible. I tossed it in the back of the car and left it for now.

I didn't think to take pictures until after I started tinkering, but I did take photos of it lying on the ground in front of the car.

Would filing a claim like this significantly increase my premiums? (Progressive)

I have comprehensive and collision coverage with a low deductible. I've not filed any claims on the policy before.

    Please advise.

Mobile barbershop how to insure. Texas

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:35 PM PDT

We have bought a toy hauler we are renovating into a mobile barbershop. I am wondering if we can just get a regular rv policy for the toy hauler and a auto policy for the truck or do we need a commercial policy/rider. Right now the plan is to drive to a location one day and a different location the next. He would occasionally make house calls.

    Criteria for non renewal

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:16 PM PDT

I have had a policy with All state business in the state of Florida for the past 2 years for my s corp. I just recieved a letter stating that my policy was not going to be renewed and it will expire on 9/7/2020. I have a clean driving record with no tickets, I have not had any late or missing payments, I have had no claims on this policy. I am the only driver with one vehicle, a box truck which I drive only 40 miles per day. I did have a claim on my personal insurance with progressive, when my pickup truck was hit by another vehicle while stopped at a red light, but that was handled internally by progressive, same insurance by both parties, they cut me a check for damages (2200), there was no police involved. I was wondering what criteria underwriters use to decide not to renew policies. The reason on the form only stated "we can no longer provide these coverages at this price" but if that was the case why wouldnt they just increase my cost at the renewal. I guess I should be getting quotes from other Insurance Companies, Do other companies use the same criteria when deciding whether to insure some one. Should I try to seek out why they are dropping, or should I just move on?

Confusion after finishing a roofing claim

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:41 PM PDT

Finished up a hail claim on my roof and things are a little confusing (but in my favor). I had an ACV policy, so I went into this expecting the absolute worst... luckily it's been a pretty smooth process.

Because of the ACV policy, it sounded like I was better off working with my roofing company "as a cash job" (their words) rather than supplement. Any major supplementing I'd need to do myself, but they were pretty good at communicating with me. The insurance estimate was above the cost of the roofer's estimate (both roof and gutters were over). Overall they depreciated the value of the roof material ~45%. I get check #1 and there's not a ton of recoverable depreciation... so I'm expecting to be out ~$5k when it's all said and done (Not too bad considering it's a new roof). Work starts and they ended up needing to redeck the roof. I spoke with insurance and they added it to the estimate. When everything was finished the roofers submitted the invoice, the permit fee, the inspection results, etc.

I get an e-mail for the issuance of the second insurance check. In the final estimate that was sent over the non-recoverable depreciation is all significantly lower (almost half), some items that were depreciated previously are no longer, and the amount they gave for the redecking was substantially higher than what the roofer charged me. He said he gave me a discount... but everyone always says that.

If nothing changes, is it safe to keep the money? A few different things changed according to the detailed estimate but the bulk of it is the substantial redecking money and significantly less depreciation on the roof material. This pretty much covers the roof with some left over for the other items that I wasn't actually going to address (damaged siding). I am fairly confident I'm interpreting the estimate correctly (although admittedly it's confusing as hell).

Car repairs failing after a year (GA)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:31 PM PDT

Hey everyone. Need someone. About a year ago I got rear-ended in GA. Claim was handled by the other party through Esurance. The paint start aging after a year which weirdly made the original factory paint on the trunk and hood still look fresh while the repainted rear quarters and doors looked older. Esurance has approved that they will fix it after a year since I had gotten the car fixed from their in network shop. The new shop has found that the repairs were done adequately on the parts that I couldn't notice so now its gonna be repaired again and then repainted. They are gonna repaint 3/4 of the car.

My question is: can I ask them to paint the whole car or chip in to paint the whole car. Its a three stage paint and the car being 3 years old might develop difference in the paint again. Painting the whole car would just mitigate further paint issues.

Would like to know if this is reasonable to ask? And if it, how do I approach it with them? Thank you.

Doctors office ordered device without my permission

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:56 AM PDT

About 4 months ago, I had a doctor's appointment at my OBGYN office and asked for information on birth control methods. I was given a pamphlet on a Mirena IUD. I wasn't ready to make a 5 year commitment, and the Nurse Practitioner told me they would have to order it anyways, and if I decide to go that route, just to get with the health care coordinator when I was ready and the office would place the order.

My husband and I decided against a Mirena since receiving the information, so never contacted or met with the health care coordinator. A few weeks later, we are billed for a co-pay from Walgreens because the OBGYN office placed the order anyways, without my permission or request. Insurance already paid on the device order.

Called my insurance, they said to talk to Walgreens. Called Walgreens, they said to talk to the doctor's office that requested the order.

After speaking with the receptionist at my OBGYN office, she said "No problem, we can just use it for someone else if you come in to sign a form." I have not yet made it the 45mins to the office to sign the form, (staying home due to Covid and having a child in December during flu season, I wouldn't be making unnecessary treks out.) I'm also not sure if I want to do things this way, I feel that the device should just be returned instead of showing on my insurance EOBs?

Today, 4 months after the original appointment, I get an automated call reminder for my appointment tomorrow, at the sister location of the office I normally go to. (There are two in the network. One office is 45mins, the other is a little over an hour from my home.)

I called to check what the appointment was for, since I haven't made an appointment, and the receptionist said it was for the Mirena placement. I told her I did not request the appointment, it was scheduled without my permission or knowledge, and I wanted to cancel. I am not interested in receiving the IUD, and this shouldn't have been ordered. She was short but said, it's cancelled. I thanked her, and got off the line, but am now wondering the motives of the doctor office? What is going on?

Is this fraud or breaking New Jersey law? What are reasons a doctor office would set up an appointment without the patient's knowledge? Thank you for reading!

TLDR: My doctors office ordered and billed my insurance without my permission, and then set up an appointment 4 months later without my knowledge.

Unfortunate at-fault collision in newly purchased (used) car

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:25 PM PDT

I purchased a used 2016 Mustang GT from a private seller to gift to a lifelong family "friend" who just accomplished a major milestone in his life. I bought the car home to give to him and he purchased car insurance (comprehensive+collision) that same day so that we could take it out for a spin.

Fast forward a few hours and he very unfortunately got into a collision accident involving a tree and did some pretty significant damage to the vehicle (though I don't think it's totaled but I'm certainly not an appraisal expert) - luckily no one else was involved and we did not get hurt. He immediately filed an insurance claim but needless to say, I was upset and also glad we were safe/unharmed.

The problem is that since I purchased the car from a private seller, the bill of sale (BOS) document only has my name on it and not his. The insurance company rep who called him to discuss the claim stated that given this, the claim could potentially not be covered.

So my main question is - How likely is it that this won't be covered? And if it isn't, does he have any other options besides just eating the cost to fix it?

And additional info in case it matters is that he's a "premium" level loyalty discount member as he's been with this insurance company for several years with no accidents/tickets in the past decade.

The car is also technically still registered in the seller's name as we had not gone to the DMV to complete the registration/transfer title process.

All State Home Insurance Denying Roof Claim

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:24 PM PDT

Friend in NY State needs help. Part of her roof collapsed and she needs help with the insurance claim. In May 2020, she and her husband filed for a permit to have their roof repaired because they could see from outside that the roof was dipping. The town building inspector, though, refused their request for a permit on 5/18, stating that the work was "non-essential" and would violate NY State covid-19- lockdown mandates. On May 22nd, they noticed after a storm that the ceiling in a bedroom was wet, meaning that the roof was leaking. They called All State to tell them that they had an emergency situation because the roof was leaking. They said to document it. After that call, part of the roof collapsed. All State sent someone to tarp the roof, and to verify the claim, as well as a mold inspector. A few days later, the mold inspection came back clear but mold spores were found in the air. Not surprising since they live in a marshy area of forest in NY State and it was mid-Spring. All State insurance said that because my friend doesn't have a mold insurance policy, they won't cover the costs of any repairs. They said that it was not an emergency situation and that her policy only covers emergencies. However, they're living with a collapsed, leaking roof, which certainly seems like an emergency to them. They have hired a lawyer to threaten All State with legal action. Any legal advice would be very appreciate. By the way, when they first got the policy All State inspected the roof and said it was in good condition (14 months ago).

    I need car insurance advice

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 05:43 PM PDT

I live in the USA, Maryland specifically. I'm about to buy a brand new car tomorrow(2020 Mazda CX-5) so obviously I'm going to need insurance as it's required by law in MD. Now this will be my first time shopping for insurance, with my last vehicle I was on my brothers insurance and just paid him a certain amount a month and he took care of it. But this time I'm getting it for myself and I honestly find it as frustrating as shopping for a new car, lol.

I'm wondering what I should be looking for? I want to go as cheap as I can get while still getting great coverage across the board. I've been driving for almost 5 years with a flawless record. No crashes, no nothing. Not even a ticket not that that matters!

I guess I'm just looking for some advice and recommendations.

    Working at Lockton?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Anyone have experience working for Lockton as an Account Executive? How was it?

I currently work for a large carrier as a commercial lines underwriter. Was considering taking a stab at the broker side but have heard mixed reviews. I know Lockton pays well but do they also work you to the bone? Has anyone else switched from the carrier to broker side and if so what was your experience? Any regrets?

    Appreciate any responses!

Can I drive my mom’s car (and vice-versa) if we have separate auto policies?

I am just finding out insurance follows the car, not the driver. I have my own insurance policy for my car. I live with my mom who has her own insurance policy for her car. We frequently drive each other's cars because sometimes one of us is in a rush and we block each other in the driveway. Is this allowed? Edit: we are in Massachusetts

Fender bender question - I did stupid things

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:25 PM PDT

Hello, posting from a throwaway because I'm a total idiot.

I went to run an errand earlier today and as I was leaving I backed into another vehicle. Obviously, I fucked up, but my stupidity does not stop there.

The owner got out of his car and began rubbing the bumper, basically the little scuffs rubbed right off and there was no damage to be seen from where my bumper hit his car. The guy was driving a nicer car so I was pretty taken aback (and honestly excited and relieved) that he seemed to have no interest in going through insurance or calling the police. Underneath the bumper there were some scratches but it looked like it would have been impossible for my car to have caused that damage because 1. that damage was all across the bottom and I only hit him in one area at an angle and 2. that part of his bumper dipped in about 8 inches under the bumper (like a grill guard or something) so I'm not sure my car bumper could have even touched that area. I barely hit him, I initially thought I ran over something.

Anyway, the guy was like I'm going to have to go to (luxury vehicle) dealership to get the paint touched up and it'll cost about $300. First, and I'm not making this up, he solicited me for sex. He was like, let's go to a hotel nearby and all of this will go away. I declined. He said, oh you have a boyfriend? Why not go to a hotel then? You look like you'd be good at this. That should have been a red flag but nope. Long story short, I sent him $300 through cash app. He then was like 'if there's more damage i'm going to file a claim', I said if you're going to do that I'll call the cops right now so we can get a report. He very obviously did not want the cops involved. He said he would not file a claim and that we were good (I have him on video saying this, I also have a picture of his plates). We both left after talking about the situation, he thanked me for not calling the cops and deleted my phone number from his phone while showing me he did that.

Now that I've had some time to think about it, I clearly fucked myself over. He has my name and plates but not my insurance information. Can he still file a claim even though I paid him money? Is there anything I can do to protect myself going forward?

I know I should not have given him money, but I didn't want a claim on my insurance. Pretty sure I fell for a hustle.

    Drug use life insurance question

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:25 AM PDT

A few years ago I disclosed that I smoked marijuana a few years prior to the initial phone call I received regarding a new life insurance policy with StateFarm.

I'm not sure what the call is called, but they asked me questions like "do you use tobacco?"

I admitted that I had experimented with marijuana in the past.

Is that on record somewhere? Is there any way for me to verify that it was officially recorded or not?

    Tennessee, U.S.A

    Damage at the Mechanics shop

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:01 AM PDT

My car was recently backed into while at my mechanics shop. The business owner across from his shop is the one who backed into the car. Mechanic refuses to let me speak to the insurance adjuster because the claim is being done by his shop and he keeps saying "they legally wont speak to you". He is also saying the check to fix the car will go to his business. I would like to speak to the adjuster because I need to know how much was paid out and if I have recourse for depreciation. Does this seem normal to anyone? Since this is my fully paid off car with my name on the title I believe I should be getting the money. Using a throwaway account.
