1966 Mustang submerged in 3ft of water while running. Insurance and mechanic saying it isn't totaled.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:57 PM PDT

Hi everybody -- I'm posting this for a friend. This occurred in Texas.

Weekend before last we had some flash flooding and my friend drove her 1966 mustang through what she thought was fairly shallow water. It ended up being about 3ft deep and the car stalled and the interior completely flooded. She, not realizing the damage she was doing, tried to start the car with it submerged. After it had sat in the water for about 20 minutes, a friend showed up and helped her push it out, and then they spent the next 30 minutes repeatedly tying to start the car. It then sat for two days on the side of the road since the small specialty insurer she uses wasn't open over the weekend.

I went by with her and pulled the dipstick, confirming the pan is full of water. The carb also had standing water in the barrels and the engine bay was full of mud and debris. The transmission dip stick looked like there was water in there as well. The interior was still soaked by the time I looked at it.

The car has now been sitting at the shop for two weeks -- presumable rusting and corroding to smithereens -- with an engine full of water because they are overloaded with work. I spoke with the shop owner today and he told me the car is definitely fixable. This seems insane to me. He and the insurance have no plan to replace anything that is currently working (like the alternator, starter, wiring harnesses, AC, speakers, etc) even if the part was literally submerged. They basically plan to tear down the motor, switch the fluids in everything, and call it a day. It seems to me that the car will never be the same in that case.

Am I off base, or is it lunacy to say that this car is not totaled? I get the feeling that the shop owner just wants to make $10k, so he's avoiding calling a spade a spade. He's saying it's "definitely not totaled" and he hasn't even turned a single bolt on it yet.

Would appreciate opinions or any other info I can use when I speak to the adjuster on my friend's behalf.

    GEICO DENIES CLAIM W/O INSPECTION?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:30 PM PDT

I'm posting for a friend. His car was totalled yesterday by a driver performing an illegal maneuver. My friend was in no way at fault. The PD didn't assess fault and the other insured driver simply told his insurance it wasn't his fault. Unfortunately my friend has a brain injury and is unable to recall every event of the accident so they are closing the case based on their insureds word. They did not inspect the damage on either car. My friend is disabled and unable to work. He's on a very fixed income and it could take years to afford another vehicle. I just feel as though there is no due diligence without inspecting any of the damage. Without inspections we could claim what we want and for that matter do whatever damage we want. If we can get witnesses he will clearly have committed insurance fraud with his omission.

    Tenant insurance valid during sublet?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:03 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'll be subletting my apartment in Toronto, Ontario for 6 months or more. I've contacted a couple of insurance companies but they've said they wouldn't cover me if I'm subletting. Can anyone help me find a good insurance company that would cover me? Is there even such a company, or once I'm gone and not present here anymore, a company can decline the claim based on my absence?

    Thanks in advance!

    Changing residency for college

I'm currently a Resident in the state of NY and want to attend school in PA. In order to gain in-state tuition I would have to become a resident and to do that I would have to use my aunts address in order to change my license. I was wondering if her insurance rate would go up as I would be a registered driver in her home. Even though I'd be living on campus and just using her address as my permanent one.

Found at Fault in No Fault Accident

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:50 PM PDT

My situation is complicated due to the time span now involved.

I am in Missouri if that changes anything.

In 2017 my girlfriend and I took her dad's truck out. We were sideswiped by another driver. Due to the fact that his truck had no damaged and her dad's truck was old, no claims were ever filed; however the insurance companies obviously investigated who was at fault. Eventually I was told that I was not held at fault due to the fact that they could not get in contact with the other driver. Cut to today.

I just so happened to be reviewing my insurance documentation and realized that this whole time, my insurance has me filed as at-fault, and I'm obviously worried that it is a factor in my high premium insurance (I'm already not helped by age, speeding tickets, and a brand new car.) With it being so long ago I don't have any police reports or even super detailed memory of the accident. Do I have any hope of getting this changed and having my premiums lowered?

I'm not hoping to get reimbursed for what I've paid or to magically see my premiums cut in half, but is there any hope to have it changed?

Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

[NY] Flood Insurance: Bank says house is zone AE, FEMA maps say zone X

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:49 PM PDT

I am in the process of buying a vacation house that is next to a canal. Before I made an offer on the house I checked the FEMA maps and it's in zone X. The FEMA maps have not been updated since 1993. Today the bank told me the house is zone AE. Looking at the map they provided it appears the software they use had the flood zone layer shifted about 25 feet to the left from the FEMA map, which makes it look like my house is half in zone AE and half in zone X (You can see this in the pictures below).

How do I go about getting this corrected? Looking at the FEMA maps, I think it's pretty obvious the house would not be in zone AE since it would practically have to be touching the canal (The back of the house is slightly more than 20 feet from the canal, and my property line ends about 8 feet from the canal).

I had my insurance agent quote me on a flood policy and it came out to be $12,500 a year. That's not a typo either. I'm shocked that a policy is that outrageous considering the property is only worth $110,000. I really don't want to back out of the purchase but $12,500 is way too much.

    Preventative Care question

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:11 PM PDT

I just got insurance for the first time in my adult life, so please forgive me. I was born with a heart condition. Will that make ECG's preventative care, since my condition was preexisting? I'm in Texas, but my plan is based in Louisiana. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Business owner and assistant looking for career change in British Columbia, Canada!

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:27 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I just turned 25 and graduated with a BA degree 3 years ago and have been working as an virtual admin/sales/HR/IT assistant (haha yes, wearing multiple hats) at a college and hotel while running my personal training and digital marketing business. Basically a jack of all trades and a super fast learner.

Am officially getting quite bored and not stimulated in these fields but realized I had a knack for learning a bit more about all the insurance coverages and policy wordings (multiple times had to correct brokers/agents on mistakes they made with both personal and commercial insurance policies).

Researched the crap out of every insurance out there for both work reasons and personal reasons and am really interested in long term disability, E&O and commercial insurance.

I am always looking for new work to keep me busy and stimulated but have been quite tired of the fields I'm in for some time now and have heard amazing things from insurance brokers/agents about their jobs and ways to move up the ladder or become successful independently.

Absolutely hate long degrees (4 years was enough) so would not want to go back to university but would love to take exams and certifications as they are quick to study and can instantly lead you to working in new roles. Again, insurance sounded perfect for this.

I am pretty good with people of all ages and backgrounds so customer service is no problem but I'm not the biggest fan of teamwork as I always feel others slow me down. I love my boss and love helping my clients though (always have been described as the most caring, compassionate and empathetic worker and coach).

I love working with computers, different softwares and solving problems and sometimes like numbers and graphs (not hardcore statistics or anything similar though).

I would consider myself a super Type A personality and an INTP / INTJ. I like to get shit done and be the best worker in the office haha. I am kind of a workaholic but not with mundane work.

Anyways, currently taking my Level 1 insurance broker exam soon and hopefully can get into one of the bigger insurance companies asap as a broker/agent to get my feet in the door.

Would appreciate if anyone would be able to give me any insight on what roles I might look into after working as an agent/broker OR even before I become an agent/broker? I am VERY eager to climb the corporate ladder haha.

    Insurance Payout help

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:53 AM PDT

Hello, needing some help , if y'all have a minute.

    To shorting things.

Drunk guy hit my stone wall. Call insurance , start claim, turn in quotes. Month goes by, company filed bankruptcy. Nothing for two months, calls unanswered. (Windhaven Insurance sells to Sprinters Insurance.) Contact them, they pick up from previous adjuster. Nothing for 3 months. Call them back, time to time. Eventually call a different adjuster , explains to me that . Claim has been approved, only waiting on a manager's signature. Instructed me to call on a Tuesday but the original adjuster said she could not get a signature to try again two weeks from that Tuesday.

It's been 7 months since the accident, is there any recommendations to speed this up, is this normal ?

    Thank you

    Question about auto insurance lapse

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I'm in Nevada. I know it varies by state, but my question isn't related to a specific state.

In early may I received an email (here) (full statement by the company here) stating that my then insurer Progressive would not be cancelling or non-renewing policies until may 15th, providing insurance coverage throughout regardless of payment or non-renewals . My insurance was set to expire the 8th and I was late with a payment but decided not to get coverage with another insurer (geico) until the 13th.

I would never have waited an extra 3 days for my biweekly check to come in had they not stated that I'd be covered thru to the 15th.

Now I'm getting a letter from the DMV stating that my insurance lapsed between 5-09 and 5-12 and that I'll have to pay a fee of $500 or something.

I called the company and they were very confrontational and basically told me I was cancelled for nonpayment and had I called them and made arrangements they wouldn't have cancelled me before the 15th. The email clearly states that you'd be covered regardless of nonpayment.

Is there anything I can do or am I SOL? Any recourse at all? I can't afford that fine...

I bought a 2013 Infiniti JX35 with only 52,000 miles right in the beginning of February and got insurance through Allstate, around 10 days ago I was at fault in an accident. They declared my car a total loss and I just got their CCC report that was used for their offer... Need help/suggestions!

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:19 PM PDT

So I'll try and keep this is as short as possible but I could definitely use some help or suggestions because I feel as if they are offering at minimum $2,000 less than what the car was worth pre-accident..!

You would think that paying for one of the industries most respected brands of insurance and the extremely expensive premiums that come along with it, they would take care of their own!

I have done a lot of research on my own and have read about several different lawsuits filed against insurance companies that use CCC as their valuation method in an effort to consistently get away with settling total loss claims for significantly less than what is fair.

I live in Mesa, Arizona which is part of Maricopa County which is the largest county in the state and basically home to Phoenix and most of the different suburbs surrounding it. I heard this can play a role in some factors of determining a car's worth so figured I'd throw that out there.

Based on my research, I would put the value of my car around $16,000 and don't think it's unreasonable that it could be even higher. It was in near perfect condition, had been garaged its entire life, had significantly lower miles on it than what the average 2013 vehicle would have, plus included the premium trim package from the dealership which was $5,000 at the time of purchase, and also had sft,,

    COBRA Help

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:09 PM PDT

Hoping to get some help, and piece of mind, from everyone here. My wife, our family's sole coverage provider through her employer, lost her job early this month (June). Her employer offered, as part of her severance, to cover 2 months of our COBRA insurance, which we need. We received the COBRA forms mid-month, I completed them and mailed them around the 15th-17th. Today, 7/1, we were trying to pay for a prescription and our pharmacy said they couldn't process the claim due to our insurance being canceled. It's after hours and we can't reach COBRA or our insurance company via the phone, but on the insurance web portal it says our coverage is terminated? Is this the case even though we applied for COBRA within the enrollment window deadline (8/30)? Or are we waiting for it to be reinstated by COBRA? Kind of at a loss and need some clarity. Hoping for some piece of mind to calm myself and my spouse down about this. Thank you!

I cancelled my old car coverage today, and have a new policy set for 7/5/2020; I have a question.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:01 PM PDT

This is my first time switching car insurance companies. I notified Geico that I will no longer be needing their insurance and set (at least I think I did) a cancellation date for 07/05/2020. I also went ahead and purchased my new policy set to start on 07/05/2020.

I have read from a few sources that I should have my new policy ready to go the same day that I cancel my old policy (i.e. since I cancelled today, I should have my new coverage set for today). When I log into the Geico website I get this message. This signifies that I am still covered until the 5th by Geico, right? I'm trying to make sure I have no lapse in coverage.

I am located in California; if that information is needed.

Why was a discount given for no accidents?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:18 PM PDT

    Illinois

I got a new auto policy. They gave me a discount for no accidents in x number of years. However There were 2 NOT at fault accidents during that timeframe.

I asked my agent and they explained that when my information is entered in the system they pull up information about my records and go based on that information when issuing discounts and stuff. The insurance application didn't ask me about my accident history.

Is this something I need to call the insurance company about to make sure theyre aware of the 2 not at fault accidents? If so then What do I say to them and how do I get written acknowledgement that I told them about it?

Question about getting insurance before I buy a car

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Currently I do not have insurance as I sold my car two years ago and haven't needed one since I've been in school. I'm now looking to buy one and finance it through Carmax. One of the requirements is to have insurance to drive it off the lot, but I'm kinda confused. How will I get the car insured before I buy or even know the car I'm going to buy? Also how can I find quotes before I decide because all quotes ask for the information about the car.

Do I just decide what car I'm going to buy then go home and get quotes and sign up for an insurance plan and then buy it the next day?

    Edit- I'm in California
