Anyone hate the current "start up" culture? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:56 AM PDT This is a rant post but it might resonate. I just despise so much of what's deemed as hip and current in the modern start-up/entrepreneur world. It seems like wanting to launch a new start-up is this generation's version of wanting to be a pop star or movie icon in previous decades. People wanting that overnight glory, fame and prestige. If you replace a lot of wantrepreneur-related posts with the notion of them wanting to become a rock star, it would be exactly the same. Tech CEO's are the new idols, you can't go a day without seeing a headline about Elon, Zuckerberg or Bezos. There's little surprise that those young or naive enough will buy into the hype. There is just so much delusion. I see people posting about launching new businesses with passion and enthusiasm but no footing in reality. When I see somebody claiming that they want to be an entrepreneur and they're going to do it by drop shipping or using Click Bank or whatever, I cringe. You check out their websites a month down the line and they're almost always closed or not even updated. My mum has a dog grooming shop. She isn't rich from it but she makes a good living. That's her own business. A lot of the current crowd would look down from the gutter on it for not being a flashy tech start up, but it's profitable and will likely still be profitable 5 years down the line, when 1000's of new drop shipping sites have come and closed. She wouldn't dream of calling herself an entrepreneur, but to myself, running your own small business and being able to pay yourself a good wage is far more important than being able to give yourself a label. Everybody wants to run or work up at a start up. And there's nothing wrong with that at. It's the surrounding culture which has grown up around it that makes me cringe. And the buzzwords that come with it. 'Leverage' might be my least-liked word in the dictionary. Anyway, that's my rant over. I'd be interested to hear your interpretations of the current entrepreneur 'scene'. FWIW: I love entrepreneurship, and I love the idea of business being one of the great equalisers in life. It allows somebody of any race or religion, with little education or financial backing to be able to create their own career. Business can change lives and improve areas, economies and many other things. But the start up culture and the 'MVP's', leveraging, drop shipping and 'side hustles' can be burnt to the ground, imo! What are the chances and how can somebody start a manufacturing business in today's society? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:31 PM PDT Back in the day, 60 years ago for example simple people without higher education and probably without capital started factories which grew a lot during the years and also gave chances to their employees to have a better life. In our 'age' thanks to internet businesses are easier to create and they also grow easier, but I have this impression that they don't bring the same value, especially for the local community. What if somebody wants to start the next big factory that will give jobs to 50/100/200 employees? Imo this brings more added-value than say an ecommerce website and also looks like a more robust business. Is it still possible nowadays with very little capital? [link] [comments] |
Feeling extremely frustrated. Is starting a business this hard? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:56 PM PDT I've been working on starting a haunted house business for about 8 years. Really got serous about it around 3 years ago and have been saving all my money to get it started. I have 2 other business partners as well. How can I be more patient in this process. All my life it has always been "if I work hard enough I can achieve a goal." But with this it's basically like I've hit a brick wall. Getting funding is by far the hardest thing I've ever done and it is very frustrating to hear "oh you only need $100K, that's such a small amount" but then immediately after "but we only deal with amounts over $200K." Is it normal to save up for several YEARS to start a business? I just don't know where else to turn. [link] [comments] |
How to properly package and ship custom trading cards? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:41 AM PDT I'm creating trading cards for a niche community that I am a part of. I've gauged interest, and things look promising. I'm going to sell them in packs of 8 I want the cards to all be grouped together in the same package. What should I be looking for, that will fit 8 cards in one pack, provide decent protection of the cards, and not break my bank in terms of packaging costs? [link] [comments] |
I’m 18 years old and just published my first mobile app. Looking for feedback! Posted: 30 Jul 2020 03:23 PM PDT The app is called "vrtumind" and it's a more efficient take on guided meditation, designed for students and busy professionals. Rather than scrolling through options and navigating curriculums, the app uses an algorithm that takes preferences into account and stitches together meditations to deliver an effective session, on-demand. It's different than other meditation apps, because I used some psychological principles to make it more habit-forming (hopefully). My goal is to help as many people as possible, so it's completely free. You can check it out here. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Do I pay off this 0% interest student loan or follow my dreams of starting a business? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:24 PM PDT Good evening! I am just looking for some advice on my life situation. So I am an RN making ~70k/yr (strong job security field) Currently my only debt is student loans of 30k with 0% interest. I pay $340/mo minimum I have a strong desire to be my own boss so I would like to open my own business as a side hustle and eventually have this venture take over as my main income. I plan on starting this company with 5k cash and it is in a booming industry with a lot of opportunity. (Moderate risk) My question to you is: Should I grind for 1.5 years to pay off this debt OR should I just continue to pay the $340/monthly min. and start up on building my dream job? Need your suggestions for Startup Business Growth Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:20 PM PDT As the founder in the early-stage startup of a food delivery platform, operating in 1 city in EMEA right now, and have about 100k turnover of which is 10k net profit, how should we approach revenue growth over the next year? Open to any and all [detailed or brief] suggestions. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
How did you start your first business? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:20 PM PDT I love hearing people's success stories and what they saw the world needed due to their individual circumstances. Before I discovered entrepreneurship (before it was a mainstream fad of sorts) I worked at a job I was ashamed off and worked my ass off in the hopes that someone successful would walk past me and "discover" me. As it would turn out the owner of the business took me under his wing and began to mentor me and since then I have had a lot of successful mentors come into my life and help shape who I am today and the success I've enjoyed. Online business--adult toy store Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:57 PM PDT Is there anyone in this community who can share some dos and don'ts in starting an online business? I am looking at starting an adult novelty online store and need some advice. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Some interesting books about entrepreneurship. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:52 PM PDT Hi, What are good books to read about entrepreneurs and sales. I just finished, the lean startup by Eric ries. And the way of the wolf by Jordan Belfort. Any good suggestion to read next? [link] [comments] |
Any Experience with Skill Assessment Software for New Hires? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT Would love to hear if anyone had any positive experiences with skill assessment / aptitude testing software. Nothing beats hard work and effort, but I got to believe there has to be a better way to efficiently and consistently get deeper insights on candidates than relying on an interview panel's impressions/vetoes. How did you manage the candidate experience of asking them to take a standardized test without turning them off? Any good/bad real life experiences you can share using assessment tools? I've been looking at Pymetrics and predictive index as potential solutions. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
What is the best online payment option Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:02 PM PDT Hi everybody I'm planning on selling my art but I don't know which online payment account I should use. I've heard some bad things about PayPal. I was thinking of using Stripe. What do you guys think [link] [comments] |
Launched Scarletspace, would appreciate freedback Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:55 PM PDT My team and I launched a new startup recently and would love some feedback in terms of user experience, would ideally like to know what you guys think about the sign-up journey (we've implemented a guided step-by-step process to get the basics done upfront). We are an easy to use website builder called Scarletspace - https://scarletspace.co/ - we are constantly refining the platform and process, but a new round of user feedback would be appreciated. We offer a 14-day trial, no credit card details required so give us a try and let us know. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying a custom store through Alidropship and I was wondering if anyone had done this and has any advice or anything to say? I'm buying a custom one instead of simply paying for the plugins and building my own because I feel I lack the technical skills to be successful by myself. By paying for the services of a professional team, I'm hoping it will turn out good. I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Also, has anyone used any of the services/add on bundles they provide? Are they worth getting? [link] [comments] |
Is it possible that we are seeing the biggest entrepreneurial shift in modern times? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:13 PM PDT Covid has done many bad things for the world, we all can agree on that. But ever since it started I realised that this would be a game changer for entrepreneurs. Those in full time jobs that were motivated enough to have a side gig or idea in the works, now had the extra time and head space to think seriously about their next steps. Those on furlough were basically being paid to start their own business, I pity the people who wasted that enormous opportunity. Personally I've seen how much of my full time job was just office based distractions and drains on my energy by mood hoovers. Now that I've dialled that out, my energy for my side business knows no bounds. We've seen figures in the UK showing there has been a boom in small businesses being set up, could it be we're witnessing a mini revolution in the works? And although it's great to stay optimistic, it's very likely the coming months and years will be a pretty challenging environment for many small businesses. To help out I think governments need to get behind these new firms and spur on the revolution with small business grants. Would love to hear your own story about what this has done for you. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:34 PM PDT 📷 I've been working on several iterations of this app, including prototyping and full-color wireframes, that allows users to find their "stylist soulmate" and discover inspiration for hair style ideas.Wanting to conduct a sanity check, I spent time surveying the different stakeholders (salon clients, salon pros, salon owners) and have incorporated several of their suggestions wherever a common theme emerged.Women change hairstyles, cut, or hair color about 150 times on average in their lifetimes. PROBLEM The common process of searching for and organizing inspirational hair images, and ideas, for every change-up is both time consuming and tedious. And once a particular style has been narrowed down, they then must locate a stylist with the right combination of talent, and a vision that matches their own, to do an amazing job the first time.Failure really isn't an option when it comes to a woman's hair. SOLUTION The app we're working on would allow users to select image(s) from a collection of thousands of hair and beauty photos and, after clicking "Style-Match", an integrated visual api will cross reference those selections and compare them to the contents of images held in the portfolios of participating salon professionals. The best matches are then listed in ranking order and can be sorted by proximity to the user.Click on on any stylist's profile and you'll be able to see everything about them including their photo portfolio, bio, credentials, online customer reviews, and more. An in-app messaging feature lets you contact the stylist directly, ask questions, get advice, and arrange an appointment with eyes wide open well before they ever sit in the chair. Users can also browse images for inspiration and save their favorites to "lookbooks" they can share with friends and social connections. Multiple monetization features are included. Salon Professionals and Salons can build their own Profile Pages and upload their entire Digital Portfolios to the App. Currently ISO a technical partner with a skill set and experience in building mobile apps, particularly 2-sided marketplaces. Knowledge and experience with machine learning is also a plus but not essential. PM me if interested. [link] [comments] |
Instagram 'Promote' post question Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:58 AM PDT When I try to promote my post I get to the very last page and I have a red message that says "Certification required: You must certify compliance with our Non-discrimination Policy before running ads. Visit facebook.com/certification/nondiscrimination to certify compliance." But I don't have a Facebook account so how am I supposed to accept this? There is no link etc. Does anyone know how I can solve this? [link] [comments] |
Questions regarding creating an E-commerce business/Online Store Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT I recently bought an custom domain with godaddy and was wondering what my options are in terms of creating an online store and connecting that domain. Could learning HTML/CSS save some of the costs? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:22 AM PDT I'm currently selling some beats of music and i used the example above so I can maybe make some small slogan to increase attractiveness. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:16 AM PDT I was fired from multiple jobs. My most recent was a few years ago. The greatest job I ever had. After a while, I started working for ride sharing companies (Ubereats, Doordash, Instacart, Postmates) . I deactivated for 3. Only instacart reactivated me. The reasons were all because of lies. Despite me still having postmates, I stress to people to have a back up plan. You never know what will happen with these apps. I am an entrepreneur that looks for other things to solve my problems as well as others, In my opinion, everyone has that in them but not a lot use the skills. I have a no excuses mentality. Especially right now since there is a lot of opportunity out there. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:59 AM PDT I'm about to launch a new brand and I'm doing everything on a shoe-string budget, but also trying to do everything right on said budget. Out of the gate I'll only need 2 UPCs, but within a year I plan to have 5-8 different products. After that, if I'm converting, I'd be branching out to more products, but definitely under 100. If I were to get the GTIN 10 UPC deal today and need to expand in a year or two, are there any issues I should be aware of? [link] [comments] |

Starting a business and unemployment Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:36 AM PDT Hello all! Not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but here it is: I'm about to lose my job and I'm considering starting a business. I have been itching to do this for a long time, but because of what I wanted to do and the fact that obvioulsy I couldn't compete with my employer, I never did. Now I'm seeing this as an opportunity, but I won't obviously be profitable from day 1, so I was looking at unemployment. The question is: can I receive unemployment while starting a business as a C Corp? LLC would also be an option I guess, if it makes a difference. I'm in WA. [link] [comments] |
