Why I believe tracking email open rates is essentially impossible Sales and Selling

Why I believe tracking email open rates is essentially impossible

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:54 AM PDT

I see a lot of new salespeople plug into something like HubSpot and try to use "email open rate tracking" without any knowledge of how it works or how effective it really is. I am a software developer and a cyber security nut. Here is my take on the issue of email tracking.

    Background

Email opening trackers use a tracking pixel to determine if an email has been opened. A tracking pixel is typically a 1-by-1 pixel transparent GIF that is inserted at the bottom of the email body below the signature. The link to this GIF file is customized and packed with tracking codes that tie the individual email back to a known user account in a CRM (e.g. HubSpot). The URL for the GIF file might be https://tracking.hubspot.com/xxx-yyy-zzz-111-222-333/pixel.gif

The idea is that, when a user opens the email, their email client (Outlook, Office 365, gmail.com, the email app on the iPhone, etc.) downloads the GIF from the customized link. If the CRM's server makes note of a download from that customized link, then it can confidently tell the salesperson that the recipient has opened the email. Thus, we arrive at email tracking, email tracking statistics, and open rates.

    The problem

I think the paradigm is stupid and the statistics are totally invalid, for a few reasons.

    • Any business-grade email client will prevent image loads from unknown sources by default. Business-grade email clients know that the pixel tracking method is a minor invasion of privacy, but they also have an obligation to keep their clients safe from other forms of cyberattacks that may rely on this method of delivery, including fishing, worms, and downright attaching a virus to an email.
    • Business-grade firewalls and email servers can very easily block/strip tracking pixels from known trackers, and they do.
    • Increasing the number of links in a cold email (especially HTML-formatted links and links to known trackers) can dramatically increase the likelihood that an email goes to the spam folder.
    • Email clients handle this really inconsistently. For example, the iOS email app will load external assets and tracking pixels by default, but most business-grade email clients won't. If your prospect uses an iOS device that is managed by his/her employer under a BYOD (bring your own device) or MDM (mobile device management) program, the email client will likely block external assets by default.

Any time the email body or the asset-loading behavior is manipulated on the prospect's end, the validity of the open rate degrades. The open rate itself also depends heavily on the technology stack the prospect is using, which makes it very difficult to A/B test email strategies. For example, if group A has more iPhone users and group B has more Outlook users, your experiment is invalid. Unfortunately, you have no way of knowing the types of email clients or the mix of email clients used by your prospects.

    My approach

I think certain types of salespeople selling to certain industries should forget it altogether and just focus on measurable results, like the amount of meetings booked or the amount of business closed.

There is an obsession with behavior tracking and conversion rates in the sales community, and I think it has created an unhealthy reliance on invalid statistics, like the open rate. I think statistics like these should be relegated to the B2C marketing world, where they are potentially useful.

Update: I made up the format of the HubSpot tracking pixel link for sake of example, and it turned out to be 100% valid, and it returns a real tracking pixel, which further validates my point about how predictable these tactics are.

Update #2: Commenters are also saying that the corporate spam filters not only strip the links, but may also click the links in order to virus-scan or quarantine them, which further pollutes the results.

How do you find salespeople in remote areas?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:05 AM PDT

So here's a question for you -- how can I reach salespeople in remote or rural areas?

I'm an HR and recruiting manager for a community solar-focused company. We work extensively with salespeople both for residential and commercial ventures. These are outside sales roles, with the person going from business to business to educate them on community solar credits and how they can benefit. This is an awesome opportunity for people with experience in outside sales, but it's unusual in that there's no account management involved since you help the potential client sign up for community solar credits and then keep moving right along to the next potential client.

But good opportunity or not, the real challenge for me comes in finding candidates in the right locations. Since we work with community solar farms, we're usually looking for people in rural areas of Massachusetts and New York. While we can place Craigslist ads, my usual avenues of advertising (say, at farmers markets and the like) aren't an option due to Covid.

So my question to you is this -- where could I advertise to draw in salespeople who might be in more rural areas?

    Car Salesman here- need advice

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:37 AM PDT

Hey guys I need a little advice. This has been one of the single worst months I've had in car sales and it's because I've been in my own head. My confidence has gotten worse through the month even though I'm trying to stay positive. I'm not going to have a good check this month and I'm financially worried. It just seems like every deal I've had has went south, and I've had over 25 visits this month. I've stepped back to analyze my process and I'm hitting each point, I just don't know what to do. Advice is great.

Two working days left in the quarter how are things looking for you guys?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:44 PM PDT

I'm on about 70% of my number and have four orders out for signature. I need at least two of these to sign by Tuesday if I have any chance of hitting quota. Being put under a good bit of pressure from management to get them closed but I'm confident I've done everything right on my end so it's a case of crossing my fingers and hoping some of them can sign of on time. Not the end of the world if they don't though as this quarter has been a tough one across the board. How are you guys looking? Hope you all are roughly where you want to be :)

    ZoomInfo and Outreach.io Courses

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:00 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking to be a little more productive with my time in quarantine and was wondering if anyone knew where I could find any courses online for ZoomInfo and Outreach. I've looked at ZoomInfo University and Outreach University but I seem to need a business email to sign up. Does anyone know where else I can find tutorials or courses outside of these resources?

    Thank you very much!

    Huge pay cut?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:04 PM PDT

First sales position after college so I could use some advice.

So I got a job at a startup during college and worked for this company for a year and a half. I would have orders dropped on me from our sales team and managed the invoices and saw that our production team got orders out in a timely manner. I made slightly over minimum wage during this time.

After graduating I got a shot at sales and started with 0 accounts and was given a comp plan for 6% of all business I brought in. It took 2 years, but I have opened about 40 doors and have been pulling in about $150k/month. Business is actually doing way better since the start of the corona virus so that wouldn't be a reason for the changes comp plan.

I just received a new comp plan on Friday and it states that I get a base of $3100 and will make 1.25% on all sales over $75k. I am expected to now hit between $225-250k a month.

Since I was making $8-$9k the last few months it seemed that my 2 years of cold calls/emails and hitting the road opening accounts was finally paying off. I was told I have until Monday night at 5pm to sign the new comp. plan or the offer expires and my accounts would most likely be absorbed by our other sales team members. No benefits and no equity options.

Is this normal? Not like a can really find another job during a pandemic just not sure how I should react. Thanks ahead of time for all advice.

Telling my family I work in sales but actually have no idea anything about it

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:40 AM PDT

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this, but I'm looking for advice. So I do "online entertainment" (nothing illegal) and I quit my other job because I was making enough money doing this. My parents kept asking and asking what I'm going to do and worrying about my income and how I will pay my bills, and I finally told them I took a direct sales job that I can work from home. (Wasnt exactly a lie in my eyes, I sell content from home) They now have a bunch of questions that I'm not really sure how to answer. I had some basic answers figured out that I can say, I used to work at a bar so when they asked what I was selling I said bar and restaurant supplies to several bars in a different city that I don't live in. When they asked how much I make I said hourly and commission... (is that even a normal answer?) Then they told me my uncle is also in sales and then I got worried that he'd have different questions that I wouldn't expect and be able to tell that I'm lying. Can anyone tell me if you had a friend that got a sales job, what kind of questions would you ask about it that you'd assume they knew how to answer? I just need some vague answers that sound like I know what I'm talking about. I plan on eventually telling them the truth but for right now I just want to keep them out of my business and keep them from worrying about my income. Thank you so much for any helpful replies or ideas.

Thinking of Leaving my Most Valuable Experience off of My Resume

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:48 AM PDT

    SaaS AE here.

I've been in tech Sales/SaaS for over 4 years now at 3 companies.

In 2017 I started my own company that sells custom SaaS offerings, web/app development, and consulting services.

I continued to work my normal AE jobs because I was not in violation of any non-competes.

I've been working an average of 80 hours a week for the past 3 years because it is what's required to have a successful career and business at the same time. The problem?

I'm currently applying for new jobs as my current company was bought out and territory restructuring has decimated my pipeline for next year.

My SaaS/Dev business has undoubtedly been some of the best experience of my career. I created a brand, implemented my own strategy, and grew it to 6 figures.

However, as I'm sending resumes out I am wondering if it would be best to leave it out.

For starters, I'm applying at Fortune 500 companies like Salesforce, Microsoft, Oracle, Zoom, etc. From my past experience working at CDW, I know that fortune 500 management doesn't necessarily seek entrepreneurial spirit as a desired trait.

Second of all, I sell a CRM product, which would violate the non-compete for companies like Salesforce. I'm okay with selling the company or having someone else run it- I've prepared for both scenarios. I'm concerned that hiring managers would just rather not even deal with someone who owns a business that sells a CRM.

If you guys are wondering why I'm looking for a job instead of just scaling my business, here's why:

I could go 100% independent and make MORE money. I want enterprise SaaS experience though. That's the most important thing to me. I will eventually go off 100% on my own, but I want to have at least 4-5 more years of enterprise SaaS sales under my belt before I do so.

So what do you guys think?

    Leave it on resume?

    Remove?

Remove the CRM product from my company website/resume but keep every other relevant experience?

How do you wait for the decision?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:27 PM PDT

Hi guys, love the subreddit and I am learning a lot. I have a question on handling stress. I work in Enterprise Software sales and typically don't have more than 4-5 deals progressing to a decision level per year. Each deal can take months from the time the presales work has been completed till the company decides which firm to get the project. How do you handle the stress of waiting for the customer to decide?

Cold emails - including links to 3rd party sources

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:56 AM PDT

Small biz owner here. Along with cold calling, I'm looking into cold emailing to help drum up those initial clients.

In my first email, I'd like to quote two stats and which I think will be more credible if they're linked to the relevant studies.

As soon as I have time, I plan to write blog posts on these topics so I can link to my own site. However, in the short term is there any harm in linking to a 3rd party to validate the stat?

What should I be doing now during university to prepare for being a medical sales rep?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:25 AM PDT

I am studying pharmaceutical science in England and I'm currently in my second year of study, I want to be a sales representative either in pharmaceuticals or medical devices. What should I be doing to prepare for graduation and the inevitable "not enough experience" replies to future job applications. Also, what would make me stand out during the application process? Thankyou for any advice x

Started my first sales job during Covid-19

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:03 AM PDT

    Hi Guys and Gals,

I have decided to post this to see if I can relate to anyone who is going through a similar experience to mine. I began my first sales job this year in March. I actually started my first day of training on March 16th, the day that the government implemented the mandatory WFH policy (in the US).

To be honest, I never thought I would be in sales. I graduated college with a B.S in sport management because I love sports and ultimately see myself with a sports-related career eventually. I decided to take a SaaS renewals job for a huge Backup and replication software company that a couple of my mates worked at. 6 months after I graduated. Yes, I was ONLY looking at sports-related jobs during those 6 months, but I couldn't find any entry-level work.

I am currently 3 months into my job and I hate it. The company is awesome, but my job is not. I work in renewals so I am not "cold calling" customers to get them to buy my product, I am more so trying to get them to renew their support contracts (insurance) so that they can call our tech support team if they ever have any issues with their software. With that being said, I am required to make around 25 calls a day. I know it's not bad compared to some posts I've read where people are making 50-100 calls a day, but it just still sucks and I know for a fact I do not want to do it for more than a year or so. I over-exceeded my Q2 quota so it looks like I am really good at selling/my job, but I feel as though my pestering and constant emailing/calling just forces the customer to buy for the sake of just not being annoyed anymore.

What are some other options should I look into? Or did the pandemic just enhance the shitty parts of my job even more? Like I said this is my first sales job ever so I just really need advice and opinions.

    Thanks for the help!

Cold Call Opener What Do You Think

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:25 PM PDT

Recently I've been trying a method where by I'll start out with: "Hi this is u/bluetooth155, from ABC Co. You may not remember, but we've spoken in the past regarding your widget usage. It wasn't relevant at the time, but I'm connecting now because {change in the market has happened}.

By telling the person that we've spoken in the past, it creates a connection. They can't exactly remember if they have not spoken to you, since sales people call all the time. I'm finding it keeps people on the phone long enough to have a conversation.

    Thoughts?

We are using CRM with a terrible email tracking service. Any free add-ons?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:49 AM PDT

I am working at charity company, I would like to create a report so we can see how we interact with fundraisers and donors. Our CRM does provide a track of email communications but, the result only can see on each customer file. So I can see a specific person how they use their email but other than that we have no report, no visualisation, for me it means nothing as I cannot see how we been communicating with supporters tbh. We've been raising about this to my manager, they cannot change the system they said.

So I am looking for add-on, as again I would like to see our data that shows some engagement rate with supporters.

What I am looking after is - free / reasonably low price tracker - allow to show open and click & should be able to see this not as individuals but as a whole (i.e. something brings us insight) - hopefully allow us to have some templates stored

I looked into Hubspot, Mautic but I would like to hear some feedback. Thank you for reading my post.

I had an interview with GoDaddy the day they laid off EVERYONE

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:09 PM PDT

I'm currently in Austin, TX. I'm on the hunt for a sales rep job (I have ample customer service experience, specifically as a server). The only issue is, I haven't heard of ANY of these companies that are hiring. Upon doing some further research on some of these companies, I see a lot of "this job is a scam" and "don't work here" etc. Are there any reputable, well established companies that are seeking work-from-home, inexperienced sales reps? (Important to note that I currently do not have a college degree)

What is it like being a pharmaceutical sales rep/in the business side of medicine?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:56 PM PDT

I've been doing some research on this kind of career but haven't been able to find specific information about it. I don't have an educational background in business but in biology. My aunt was a medical sales rep but in another country, so I imagine the experience is different. I'm asking from the US, but I'd be interested learning about experiences in Europe as well.

Some questions I have are: What is your typical day/week like? Do you get to travel internationally? What is the starting/your current salary? How much do you work during a week/what does your schedule look like? Is there upward growth (higher positions to move up to)? What do you enjoy about your job/do you actually like it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!

    What am I doing wrong?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:33 PM PDT

I have a shop on SpreadShirt where I sell merchandise of my own designs on various products such as t-shirts, pillows, phone cases, bags, hoodies, and even face masks. I have a following of over 15,000 on Instagram and I have been advertising my products on my social media once a day, where I put a product on there to get people in a buying mood. I even tell them where to find it which is to click a link in my bio. I charge generally around $18.99 for a t-shirt and around $15.49 for a cell phone case, as well as between $30-$45 for a hoodie because of their base prices.

I have had this shop active since June 14, 2020 and so far, I only sold one product (a friend of mine bought a face mask), but that's it. Despite the fact that I have over 15,000 followers who could look at this, it's only reaching about 1,000 people, and less than 100 of them give them likes, and generally no more than 10 actually visit my profile and click on my website link to go to my store. In the past week, I've only had 74 website clicks, and no one has bought anything.

I don't know if it has anything to do with my designs. I sell designs with like inspirational quotes, humor, and other kinds of designs.

I know it has nothing to do with my inventory either. I actually have 1,777 products made, and still (other than that one face mask) not one of them has been sold.

I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm taking SpreadShirt's advices and tips to the best of my ability, but I'm still not getting anything. And I have a car to buy and maintain and college tuition to pay for. I don't know what to do. That's why I'm here. To get advice on what to do to help my shop grow, or at least be more noticed or spark interest.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Unless it's something negative, that won't be appreciated. Thank you very much! I'm looking forward to hearing your responses!

Question about selling in the construction/renovation industry

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:55 PM PDT

Would I approach contractors and large construction companies? For example would I contact AECOM directly? What about smaller renovation companies? Who is mainly responsible for buying these materials?

Also, for anyone, who is in the construction business, do you know what kinds of adhesives are the biggest sellers?

Having trouble landing a sales/solutions engineer job

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:39 PM PDT

Left my job at the end of February as I did not like what I was doing and wanted to take some time off to relax then reevaluate what I wanted. I was previously a software developer, but was sick of sitting behind a desk all day hacking out line after line of code. Decided to leave at a bad time too, so screw me right?

Anyways, decided I want to give sales a shot as I like talking with others and could travel breaking up the monotony of an office setting. I hold a computer science and computer info systems degrees. Through my research I could go purely sales starting as a BDR/SDR or "skip" some ahead and get a sales/solutions engineer leveraging my technical background. I am obviously looking in the SaaS and other technical industries. I have been applying to engineer positions for 2 weeks now, haven't had any phone interviews and plenty of rejections. I still apply to postings that ask 3+ years experience (which honestly is about 99% of postings). I tailored my resume to highlight more of my consulting work I did, which I am stretching the truth there as my days were 90-95% just coding. Also, try to highlight the more interacting with clients that I did. Lastly, highlight some technical aspects.

So, I know this is a funky time right now, but I can't tell if it's the job market, lack of experience, or even my resume that is not landing me anything. Is it typical that someone like me could land a job with no prior experience? Should I be looking at other positions?

I live in the Chicago area, so good area to be in. Thanks for any help!

    Jordan Belfort Firm Recruitment

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:20 PM PDT

Hey all, I received a message from some recruiter saying he's with a Jordan Belfort firm. How legitimate does this sound? I've tried searching about it and can't seem to really find enough info on it so I hope someone can help. I'll copy and paste his 2 messages.

    1. Love your background! I'm a lead recruiter at the new hiring firm that Jordan Belfort (the Wolf of Wall Street) has created. Your background seems like the perfect fit for a high paying sales role for a company we've partnered with in SC! I'd love to invite you to our first round interview to learn more. Please schedule a time here as soon as possible:
    2. Sure! We are hiring on behalf of multiple companies that have sales positions open. We train their new hires and get them ready to be top performers when they immediately get onto the sales floor(whether that may be outside or inside). If you have any specific questions I can answer them for you!

How can you steer companies to join a new online B2B platform that could provide leads?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:19 PM PDT

I have started an online platform which displays industry products that are searchable and provides links to contact the vendor. Purchasing does not take place on the website. It is proving to be difficult to get companies on board with a young platform. Does anyone have tips on how to get the ball rolling? Even offering companies free membership does not seem to get companies interested. Advice?
