    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Jun 26, 2020

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:07 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    So it begins

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:25 AM PDT

I think the market was forward looking under the assumption that "we won't close down again". This has now just been tested with Texas governor closing all bars.

How long before other states follow suit? Could we imagine where DIS ends up if Florida announces it delays their opening? I'm not a bear but this could have ripple affects far beyond a V shape from the dip today

Edit: an hour after original post, Florida closes bars. The dominos are falling

Microsoft is permanently closing its retail stores

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:22 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/26/microsoft-to-close-retail-stores.html

Microsoft on Friday announced it will permanently close its 83 Microsoft Store retail locations.

In the past decade or so, Microsoft began to expand its retail presence in an effort to create a shopping experience similar to Apple's.

Microsoft said the closing of its physical locations will "result in a pre-tax charge of approximately $450 million, or $0.05 per share," which it will record in the current quarter that ends June 30.

Stock watch List June 26, 2020

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:46 AM PDT

Good morning, here's my watch list:

Gap Ups: AXSM, BIG, CLGX, EBAY, INO, ROKU, SDGR, SNX (Gapping into 200 DMA), ZGNX, ZM

    Gap Downs: NONE

Possible day 2 plays: DADA (day 2 means it moved yesterday and could possibly be in play today)

SPY gapping down slightly after holding the 200 day moving average support. Bullish action yesterday in most individual stocks. Next support is around the 50 day moving average/last pivot low which is at the 296/297 area. My outlook remains bullish as long as these levels hold. Some nice gappers today so my focus will be on those names, long, short or both. As always, have stops and targets in place before entering trades to eliminate emotional trading and unnecessary losses. Have a good weekend, stay safe and good luck trading.

I am not holding any positions in the stocks listed above. The purpose of this list is to "watch" for opportunities to capitalize on short/intermediate term fluctuations in price.

Is treating ETF’s as a savings account a bad idea?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:49 AM PDT

I put about $1000 a month into SPY or QQQ, in my mind, putting it in etfs is better than saving accounts, because of the better APY %. I throw my money in it every paycheck without regret or hesitation as to me I am spending, saving and earning all at the same time. Red days I buy more. Should I have a more strict business mindset on this, or is it just too hard to go wrong putting money in ETFs as opposed to 0.5% APY with banks. Thanks for any help.

R/stocks has actually provided a ton of help to me in understanding the market

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 11:40 PM PDT

I am the literal definition of a person who started playing with stocks because of covid. With no ideas on what to buy or why, I started off with a few duds like $SDC, $ACB, whatever Party City's stock was and really lucked out with Diamond Eagle Corp (Pre-DFKNG). After reading more posts on r/stocks I developed a healthy portfolio and better understanding on what to buy/why. Also, some tips were huge to help me avoid disastrous losses and make healthy gains. Basically, this subreddit changed me from a lotto gambler to an educated poker player if you get my analogy.

So I want to say thanks to this community!!

    What's everyone's take on Burger-fi?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:57 PM PDT

Announced merger with a certain acquisition company, should be sealing the deal by the end of the month and should trade on the NASDAQ by September. Their financials are private but from reports it looks like they've been seeing steady growth over the past 5 years. It's also florida based and is in the food industry which might not work well in covid times, what's your take on it?
