My competitor is copying me - what should I do? small business

My competitor is copying me - what should I do?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:00 AM PDT

I know the answer is probably "nothing", but it's incredibly frustrating. I launched my online store one month ago, because the existing offerings were quite amateur and there was a gap in the market for a better, more professional company. Since I launched, my competitor has started copying my marketing, my social media posts, my Facebook adverts (almost word for word/image for image), my loyalty programme (she is using the exact same points and reward scheme as me, right down to the number of points customers get for certain actions). It's like every day she has stolen yet another part of my business. I know copying is supposed to be flattering, but it doesn't feel like it. Customers are starting to mix us up because she is copying my marketing so closely. Has anyone else had this experience? What would you do?

Edit: Some clarifications. I'm a legit retail store, no dropshipping or anything like that. I made enough profit in my first month that I'm now opening a brick and mortar store. I do not make my own product, I sell very high quality brands that are well-regarded in my industry. I import products from all over the world (America, Germany, Australia, UK, etc). I sell some of the same brands as the competitor. I don't care if she copies what brands we sell.

The copying is not taking our copyrighted images, it's taking the same images from our suppliers that we use and using them in the exact same context as us. They are not product images, they are lifestyle images. It's taking our text for those images and changing a few words to make it look like her own. She has basically made her ads look exactly the same as our ads and it's confusing for both ours and her customers.

We were very differentiated businesses when I started out a month ago, but over the last few weeks she has morphed her business from being something unique into being a carbon copy of us.

    Tips for investing excess cash?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:54 PM PDT

My friend owns a stable business that has brought in a lot of money and he has no intention to spend more on expanding it. He wants to know how to invest his business' funds (ie bonds, stocks, etc) but he couldn't find much information on investing business funds. There's a lot of information for personal finance but he wants to know how to invest with business funds.

Edit: For those wondering you can search up a 'corporate investment account' to find a business brokerage account that suits your needs. Most can't be opened online and require mailing in forms.

Neighboring County With Less Sales Tax for Small Business?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:30 PM PDT

I run a business that requires me to buy inventory online from retailers, so I am subject to sales tax. The local sales tax rate is significant (~8%) and I want to see how I can legally lower my sales tax rate, potentially buy incorporating in a neighboring county that has a lower sales tax rate and sending my inventory there?

Dont want to get caught up in sales tax evasion, just want to see if this its possible for me to do. I imagine there's some way, such as how people register their luxury cars in Montana..

The sites I order inventory from do not accept reseller permits.

How to File Taxes for an LLC if we made no money?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

Some friends and I started an entertainment company (not to be confused with prestige worldwide) and a few months ago we filed as an LLC in Florida. During the year we had revenues and expenses, however we didn't turn a profit. Pretty much even.

What do I need to do to make sure we are in compliance with taxes for the year? It is due July 15th correct? Thank you so much for the help im feeling very overwhelmed!

Starting new company or keeping it under my current one?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Hey, I am not sure if this is the right sub or not but figured I'd start here.

I currently own a web design company building sites for clients and freelancing with other companies. I am wanting to start another business selling vinyl stickers. I want to sell mostly online, my own store and ebay. I am wondering whether I should get an LLC and separate bank account for all of this, or can I keep it under my current business? I want to make sure I can take the write-offs for materials.

    Business owners!

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:53 PM PDT

I'm definitely not looking to start my business tomorrow, but I would like to eventually own my own, and be self employed. I'm fortunately already a 1099. But, in the future ( who knows when with the way things are right now) Id like to be my own boss. With that being said, what are some things you wish you'd known before opening your own business? Any tips or tricks? Thanks in advance!

    Fruit and veg shop

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:07 AM PDT

Does anyone have any experience owning a fruit and veg shop? Any advice to share? I have recently been thinking about quitting my job in retail and either buying an established business or trying to look for a high traffic area where I can open a produce shop. Husband would still be working full time. After seeing the effects of covid on businesses I figure fruit and veg will always be in demand. Despite years of experience in retail I really don't know where to start. Is it better to buy an established business? What do I need to know apart from the basic business stuff?

Best rate for online credit card processor for recurring subscriptions?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:33 PM PDT

Is there a credit card processor that offers the best rate for recurring payments? I've seen Stripe and Square. Seems to be 3.4% to 3.5% for recurring/subscription type payment collection. I think Stripe was 2.9% + 0.5% = 3.4%. And Square was 3.5% for recurring.

    Any other suggestions?

    Small Business Unemployment Question

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:30 PM PDT

We run a coffee shop in MN. We closed for two months (April and May). My wife manages the shop and we paid her an hourly wage, which means we paid unemployment insurance on her wages. When we shut down, she applied for unemployment. It took a few weeks and we had to fill out some forms confirming she owns 50% of the shop and we did pay UI on her wages. So they approved her unemployment.

Now we have re-opened with a very limited menu (drinks only) which means there is only one employee punched in at a time. My wife still handles ordering product, but otherwise is still not working. So she's not getting a paycheck from the shop, and we're basically bringing in enough to cover payroll, product, and rent - so we're not making a profit. The shop is being sold and we're closing on the sale in a couple weeks.

The question is: at what point is my wife no longer eligible for unemployment?

    How to log consignment sales

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:27 PM PDT

How do you log consignment sales on quickbooks? For example if I sell $5,000 worth of supplies but I co-signed them for $4,000 would the 4K be an expense? Or would I end up playing taxes on the 5k that I made?

Online Marketplace for startup. Any Recommendations?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:12 PM PDT

    Hi all,

we are getting ready to launch a vegetable wash product based on a formula that created by me and my business partner (with a bio chem PHD). It is going to be one of the safest veggie wash using 100% food grade ingredients and no additive nor preservative.

We got the packaging, website, FB, IG and Pinterest set up ready to go! We got to make this work since I lost my job due to COVID and I have a 1.5 year old to take care of. We are ready to sell within 5 days! Lets do this!

We are planning on selling the product via our website at WIX. Do you guys know any online market place that would be a good fit for our product? and any recommendation on product launching?

Thank you all so much! Take care

    Kyu San.

Would you open a brick and mortar in this time?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:09 PM PDT

As the title states, I'm considering opening a brick and mortar retail location in an area where I feel my target market resides in Los Angeles.

    We sell women's clothing.

This would be my second location. My first location is in an obscure location, and I feel the second location would give the brand more visibility, and consequently, more sales.

Due to COVID, I'm nervous about signing this lease.

Is it too risky signing a lease in these times as cases are starting to rise again?

    What would you do?

    POS/Inventory needs

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:25 AM PDT

So I am looking for a Mobile Pos system that will allow barcode scanning and upload item information. We are dealing with a large array of products and many of them. We do not want to have to manually enter anything in except maybe our cost for the item. Is there anything out there?

I started an Etsy shop, got about 10 sales in a week, but now they’ve slowed down quite a bit.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:42 PM PDT

When I started my Etsy shop, I posted on here a lot about it asking for advice, but a couple subs tagged it as self-promotion which resulted in me being banned from a sub. Now that I've stopped posting on here about it from fear of getting more hate and possibly being banned from more subs, my views and sales have gone down quite a bit. My shop is called QuirkyCreationsByAva and I have homemade earrings made out of random stuff, such as mini babies, mini magnifying glasses, and LEGO piece ones. If you wanna check it out or maybe give me some advice on better marketing tactics, please do, cause I need it.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I'm having a hard time understanding the PUA eligibility rules. As a small business owner whose business was open throughout the pandemic but at around 90% loss in revenue, am I still eligible to receive PUA benefits? I imagine I ma but then as business is slowly picking up, at what point would I not be eligible?

Do I keep filing unemployment if I got new job after being laid off? More in the info! (Virginia)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:55 PM PDT

I work in the spa industry and in March we went on unemployment. When we were able to return back in May my employer told me that I was laid off / fired because she didn't need me (and a few others) anymore. I just started a new job part time last Tuesday. Do I continue to file unemployment and say when I got hired? I'm not even making half of what I was prior to all of this because I can only do limited services. I'm not sure what to do and I can't get ahold of VEC for days.

    Thanks for the help!
