Adding mother in law to my insurance plan

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:50 AM PDT

My wife and I live in Maryland are covered under my employer health plan. My wife's mother lives in New Jersey, is 70 years old and retired. She lives by herself and has Medicare through Aetna. She was just diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer and is starting treatment soon in NJ.

My wife went up to NJ and will be with her during her cancer treatments. Is there any legit way to add her to my health insurance, maybe as a dependent, so we can go to the cancer center of her choice?

Need car insurance ASAP; Partner is threatening to mess up my car if I try and leave him

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I'm currently in KY, but from WA and my car is currently registered in WA (license is from there too). I have no insurance right now. My partner has threatened múltiple times to take parts off my car that he bought (note: car is in my name and paid off; he bought new tires and a few other replacement parts) if I try and leave. He says I need to Help him get a new car before I leave if I really want to because he can't make money without one and if I really cared about him I would stay that long at least (but he won't let me work, etc....but that's another post).

Anyway all I have for income is unemployment and some inconsistent help from family. My credit is below 500.

Please give me some advice. Once I'm able to get out of this relationship safely I can make money and work so it'll be easier, but I can't leave without a car.

    Thanks in advance.

Why is my car insurance so expensive?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:39 AM PDT

For some reason every car I look at I cannot get an offer less than £3000, most people I talk to didn't pay anywhere near that much for their first car insurance. The average is £1270 for drivers between 17-24, I'm 20. Any help appreciated thanks

Any kind of insurance to cover property while personally transporting it while moving?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:43 PM PDT

Planning on renting a large SUV and moving most of my stuff halfway across the US. I know professional movers have insurance coverage, but I'm planning on moving things myself. Is there any kind of insurance that can cover me in case of theft on the way. I don't have personal car insurance as I don't own a car, but I will be taking the rental insurance.

Figuring out health insurance when I go to graduate school out of state

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:53 PM PDT

I'll be moving out of state to start grad school in September and I'm starting to feel a bit hopeless about my options.

First things first: my school doesn't offer health insurance AND my program requires I do not work, therefore I cannot find insurance through work anymore. I will not qualify for Medicaid in the state I am moving to as I don't have dependents and am not elderly/disabled/pregnant. I would qualify for Medicaid in my current home state but this would only cover emergency situations while at school. I am under 26 and could be added to my mom's health insurance, however this also would likely not cover anything aside from emergency services.

Although I am generally healthy, I do take medication for ADD and I'm very concerned that if I could not find a doctor to prescribe my meds/have insurance to lower my script copay I will suffer academically during a rigorous program. Also, I am going to a healthcare grad program and therefore could run into medical situations during clinicals that require comprehensive insurance.

Starting to think I'm going to have to take thousands more out in loans to pay for private insurance. Please shed some light on what I can do.

Edit: moving from California to Georgia.

    Shouldn't I get a discount?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I lost my job two years ago. I used to commute 45 miles a day during rush hour to a fairly large U.S. city (within top 30). Beyond the commute, I didn't do much driving, as I live in a small city where everything is no more than 5 mins away.

I finally remembered to contact my agent about it. First, he said that the ins company knows bc they keep track of mileage by VIN and adjust rates accordingly (which I've heard is BS). Then, when I said that I've only seen my rates go up (I have auto/home together), he responded that my auto rates have gone down 20% over the last 7 years. There was no significant drop when I stopped working; in fact, rate increased by 2.3%. Wouldn't the 7 year decline be due to decreased value of my car? Or have auto rates risen in general? I should think the extreme reduction in driving would matter. Am I wrong?

We employ family members who have their own independent health plans through the marketplace. From what I can see we cannot set up an HRA because we do not offer a group plan. We also cannot set up a QSEHRA because that will reduce the amount of premium tax credit. It appears the only option is to increase income to help cover the employees self premium but we don't want to do that either. Is there anything else I missing for being able to offer to help pay for employees portion of their independent health plan through the marketplace?

Rental Agency is Asking to be Added as Additional Insured, should I go through with it?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 09:20 PM PDT

I rent a residential property with two other friends of mine and our lease renewal is coming up. The rental agency has asked that we add them as additional insured to our rental insurance policies as required by the new lease. No, they are not asking to be added as "additional interests" or "interested parties". They have specifically stated they need to be added as additionally insured on my policy for the home I am renting currently (located in NC). I called Geico which is who I have renters insurance through and they told me that is not something they allow and I have seen online several sites saying it's a bad idea.

The rental agency has stated this is a requirement in the lease (which is up for renewal and I have not signed yet) and have provided me with several insurance companies in the area that they say will add the requirements if I get rental insurance through them. I don't want to do that, I bundle rental insurance with my car insurance so I don't want to lose that discount and I also just generally have a bad vibe about doing this. I would love some feedback about what my potential options are or to even just get some clarification on the consequences of adding my landlord as additionally insured.

    Thanks!

    Edit: on mobile, spelling/grammar corrections.

Named insured - ignored by the adjuster

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 08:36 PM PDT

There was a fire at my home. I am one of two "named insured" on a Homeowner's policy. Setting aside the family drama, the adjuster has refused to discuss anything with me and even cancelled my alternative lodging payments(I was the only tenant). Beyond saying this, he doesn't return my calls. His manager isn't either.

What can I do? I am primarily concerned with current lodging and reimbursement for my contents. It's been 5 weeks since the fire and nothing at all has been done at the property or for the contents beyond what I was able to do myself.

I am in Massachusetts if that matters.

[CANADA] Kid who doesn't know anything about insurance

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:32 PM PDT

I'm a teenager and have a part time job that gives me insurance and I wanna use some of it before I quit.

I just wanna get some basic dental cleaning/polishing, not sure what the exact name for that service is. As far as I can tell basic stuff like that is 50% covered by my plan, meaning I'll pay the other 50% out of pocket. I also have access to a healthcare spending account (HCSA), which I can use to pay for healthcare expenses. Does that mean if my services are $800, insurance pays half, and I can use my HCSA to pay, say, $300 and then only pay $100 out of pocket?

Also, I know insurance companies will do everything in their power to deny my claims, so I was wondering if it's common practice for employees to be ineligible for coverage during their notice period before they resign. (I'll try to read my policy but I just wanted to know if this is a thing that is common.)

Can i withdraw my La Capitale Claim?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 08:18 PM PDT

Two Weeks ago i fell off my motorcycle at low speed (20km) and scratched my bike. I decided yesterday to bring it to a mechanic and he told me that there was 3000$ in damages. After looking at the bike with a couple of friends who know mechanics, they told me that all i would have to do is fix a couple of scratches and dents for 300$. The mechanic i brought it to told me that mechanically there was nothing wrong with it but aesthetically there's a lot of damage. I was scared after hearing that and decided to call my insurance and claim it. Can i withdraw my claim?

    Switching health insurance

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:29 PM PDT

So I'm 24 years old and pregnant with my first baby. Right now I have UnitedHealthcare through my employer with a deductible of $3,000. I chose the cheap plan because I wasn't planning on needing to use it, I just wanted it as a backup just in case. I also have insurance with my parents, who are insured with BlueCross BlueShield through their employer with a deductible of $500.

When I found out I was pregnant and started receiving care (through an in-network provider for both companies) I only used my UHC insurance because I didn't want my parents to find out via insurance statement/bill. I've now racked up about $800 in charges towards my UHC out of pocket payments and now I want to add BCBS to my file at the doctor's office so they're the primary ones to be charged.

My question is how that will affect future care, I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up owing UHC whatever I currently owe them. Will they end up billing both companies or just the primary? Will that affect my future out of pocket costs? I live in Oregon.

    Renters insurance and recoverable depreciation

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:34 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I just had all my tools stolen and received a quote from my agent. If I found an item that is cheaper than what the agent valued it at (i.e. Item was valued at $170, $136 after depreciation, and it is on sale for $100), am i still eligible for depreciation? Should I even submit receipts at this point?

Typical costs of homeowners and car insurance?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:59 PM PDT

TL/DR: I feel like I'm overpaying for insurance but have no point of reference. I pay 250/mo for health and 130/mo in car/renters/VPP. My deductibles are just low enough to not bankrupt me if I an emergency hits, but I'm not able to use my insurance for day to day things that I need. What do people pay for insurance, and are you still able to use it more leisurely than total emergencies?

I pay 250/mo in health insurance, 15/mo in renters and VPP, and my car insurance just doubled when I moved states and now it's to 130/mo. This puts my total monthly insurance at $388. My coverage is the lowest of the low for renters, VPP and car insurance, but my health insurance is the "mid grade" one as I needed a deductible that wouldn't bankrupt me and coverage that would actually pay the bill if I had a serious accident (1,000/mo deductible, 1mil per incident).

I made around 45k last year, have been basically unemployed since November, and got that unemployment in March when Covid hit. I work freelance in a unionized industry, and had just moved my career to a union state with very little contacts and living off my savings while I built up more contacts, was in my first job in the state for 2 weeks before Covid hit and the entire industry effectively shut down for at least the next year. Unfortunately I probably won't be union and receive those benefits for a while, and I may go back to school to change careers before then.

My question: wtf are yall paying for insurance, am I way overpaying here, or is this just how it is for everyone? I have no reference, and have obviously seen the multitudes of "America sucks re: insurance" but is this really just how it is, or am I being totally duped? I don't ever go to the doctor or dentist even though I could really benefit from some meds and therapy and maybe not going to sketchy dentist schools for cavities though because that deductible is too high for day to day, it's just low enough to not bankrupt me if I got in an accident. My car sits in a driveway like 5 months out of the year, but when I'm on a job there's no way around me absolutely needing my car. Literally what on earth am I paying for other than security.*

*I know security is a lot. My friend got slammed with a hospital bill so high with bad insurance it did just about bankrupt him. I know better than to just not have it, but Jesus for $400 a month shouldn't I be able to use some of it?

    Geico Auto + Umbrella discount?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I recently signed up for Auto with Geico and was looking at adding Umbrella. The rep who was helping me with my Auto insurance mentioned that I'd receive about $80-100 off my 6-month Auto premium if I were to add Umbrella; the Umbrella rep told me there is no such thing. Does anyone have both from Geico with a multi policy discount?

Also, is $248/12 months reasonable for 1M umbrella coverage in CA?

    Home Insurance for Original Home

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 12:23 PM PDT

    Location: Bay Area, California

Our home purchase offer was recently accepted and we need to get home insurance quotes. However, home is built in 1970s and everything is pretty much in original condition. It needs a new roof, electrical, plumbing. We plan on doing a full remodel once we get the keys, but need an home insurance policy to close.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which route to take and which coverage is needed to close the deal? Thank you!

Year Abroad and Health Insurance - If and How?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Hello! I am planning a "sabbatical" year of travel and am curious if/how I should pay for health care coverage.

I am a US citizen, early 30s and have been employed for the past 10 years (i.e. large savings, good deal of investments, decent healthcare coverage, great employment record, etc). I have a lot of details worked-out already about my travel plan, but am struggling to understand how I can pay for health care? Is it really necessary if I will be overseas for a lot of my trip (i.e. about 1 country per month across EU and AP for 12 months)?

My current strategy Utilize my employer sponsored healthcare heavily leading up to beginning my year abroad (i.e. visit all the doctors, get all the Rx I need, etc). Then coast during the year abroad and only visit healthcare facilities if I need Rx or something catastrophic happens. Then when I get back to the US, I will re-enter normal healthcare routines hopefully under another employer-sponsored plan.

Regarding catestrophic coverage... I found a plan through World Nomads that appears to be popular on travel sub-reddits (link).

So, that's my strategy. I am curious if you fine folks had any insights about if/how I can have coverage while traveling the world without an employer sponsored plan. Thanks!

Is it unreasonable for me to expect my insurance company to replace my whole roof if they can't replace the damaged portion with the same shingles?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:37 AM PDT

    Location: Ohio

In late May I had a contractor come out and do a roof inspection after seeing several of my neighbors replace their roofs last year. Through the inspection, it was suggested that we file an insurance claim since 3 of the 6 slopes of our home showed signs of wind damage. The contractor believed they could not be repaired due the shingles being discontinued.

After filing a claim with our insurance company an adjuster out of Connecticut was assigned to our claim and he had a third party come out to do an inspection. They determined 2 of the 6 slopes of the roof had wind damage. Additionally, he took a sample of our shingles off our roof to complete an ITEL Report and covered the missing section with a tarp.

Once the ITEL Report was complete our adjuster called us and told us that they would only cover the cost of replacing the two slopes of the roof that showed signs of wind damage. However, because the shingles on our house are discontinued, they would be replacing them with a different shingle of like kind.

My issue with this is the shingles that are like kind are a different size then the current shingle on my house and while close in color are not the same. Additionally, I am worried that by only replacing 2 slopes of my roof I will negatively be impacting the value of my home which I hope to sell in the next few years. After bringing up my concerns to my adjuster they basically put their foot down on replacing the entire roof.

Am I being unreasonable in my expectation for my insurance company to cover the cost of replacing the whole roof?

If I am not what should my next steps be?

Do I have an option to not go through with the repairs as my roof was not leaking prior to or after filling the claim?

If I do go through with the repairs and it does negatively impact the value of my home, do I have recourse?

What if I'm in a coma?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 03:20 PM PDT

Oh boy, this is a fun question. I (TN resident) need 2 months of healthcare coverage to cover a gap (employment termination --> switching to graduate school student coverage 7 weeks later ) and my HR rep told me about retroactive COBRA. He said it might make sense to roll the dice and pay out of pocket for small things like sinus infections, etc during the gap....with the understanding that COBRA is there if I have a serious accident and major bills. I understand that I'd have to pay both the premium and deductible, only have 60 days to elect that option, all that jazz. BUT: if I'm in a catastrophic accident (like closed-head injury) and can't function, how do I elect COBRA? I have a partner but we're not married. I'm guessing that in order to employ COBRA, I'd have to be lucid and sign some forms, right?

The gate flung open and ripped out my back driver side window my driver door will not roll down and my mirror is hanging on by an electrical cord. I called my insurance company, told the story to them. They recommended that I call the others insurance company. I began the claim with them. Today their insurance company reached out and recommended I start a claim with my company. My truck is in no shape to be on the road. I need a rental ASAP. Any advice?

Health Benefits frozen due to missing work during covid?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:49 AM PDT

Hi, not sure if it's the right place to ask.

My partner has a severe eye infection that needs to get looked at ASAP, but the doctors' office told him his insurance benefits have been FROZEN due to lack of hours worked. We have an immunocompromised (cancer pt and elder dialysis pt) household in a high risk urban area, so he stayed home from work despite being an essential worker (Electrician at a data center. Most of the crew called out last 2 months as well. He did not apply for unemployment or CARES). We cannot afford to pay the cost upfront without insurance unfortunately.

Anybody know if anything we can do? What are current policies are on freezing health benefits from opting out of work due to COVID-19? Seems sketchy that they would freeze health benefits after a stay at home order was only recently lifted....

Thanks in advance for your help. *US - based which is why health insurance sucks.

    when does enrollment start?

    Atlanta GA

Also if I'm enrolling for myself but my mom claims me on her taxes , do I enroll like I'm my mom and put her info down or do I enroll with just my info?
