I created a dating app and wanted to share a few things. Posted: 16 May 2020 06:00 PM PDT I will keep this short and let you know 2 very interesting facts about it. How it works and everything else is irrelevant, just have in mind that users have profiles like all apps these days, and the app's registered users was in the hundreds range (100-1000). 1) The ratio of men to women was like 20:1. This is much higher than I expected. Their respective activities ie. how much time they spent in the app is much higher than that, but I can't give exact numbers here. 2) Nobody, and I mean nobody, wrote some info about himself like "I am George and I study that". I implemented an audio info feature ie. record that on an audio clip (max 20 secs) instead of writing. Nobody. Dating is a weird market and while I am by no means an expert on it, I do know a few things about it. Hint: it isn't looking good. If anyone has questions I am more than happy to answer them! Posted: 16 May 2020 04:34 AM PDT I recently had an app idea that I spent $2000 on, I found the developer on upwork. The iOS app I have still has some bugs and needs work on the UI/UX front but otherwise is functional with a login screen. It made it to the app store but the app is far from polished and most users may not use it due to secondary issues, such as the app stalling when users click on notifications about some item that was deleted. I should have probably gone the react native route as I need an android version as well. The app currently has a firebase backend with photo features. What are my options and was what I paid a lot? Posted: 16 May 2020 03:56 PM PDT I'm getting ready to launch a service that users are quite used to accessing via iOS or Android app. We're doing food delivery, which I've been a heavy user of in the past, but I've actually done most of my orders through the website on laptop despite having the apps downloaded on my phone. I recognize that I don't follow consumer trends as every device in my house runs some distro of Linux. We actually have iOS and Android apps both over 50% done, but we don't want to put off the launch any further and people have already taken interest in our service. I'm something of a completionist, so I want to launch everything all at once, however, the others are wanting to proceed with the web app which is ready, stable, and works well. For a service like this, where many users have downloaded and had their experience in the mobile app, do you think people would be willing to use the web platform and that we'd retain them until the mobile apps released? Timeline: < 2 months If you've been a user of food delivery apps like DoorDash, would you be willing to use a perfectly fine web app via mobile? Finding open source contributor beta testers Posted: 16 May 2020 04:38 PM PDT I'm working on a project to help benefactors of open source work pay and support open source contributors, in exchange for assistance on projects/issue. I'm not an open source contributor myself, and I'm struggling to find open source contributors to beta test my project. I've tried reaching out to maintainers of large github repos, but was mostly ignored, some of them were actually pretty angry that I had dared to contact them. Posted: 16 May 2020 07:52 PM PDT Hi, So I'm currently in talks with one of the largest universities in the country to be the first customer of software I created. The key decision maker is extremely excited about the software and is going out their way to make sure this happens, they want to have a Memorandum of Understanding done by this next week. The problem is that I've never sold software to a university before. I have no idea what I should be charging, whether I should be pushing for exclusivity, or really anything about it. I am thinking about providing the software for free, since the cost to me is minimal, and I can use the university as a reference for other universities. It's not only one of the largest, but also one of most prestigious, so if I land them, I would expect many others would follow. I've tried googling information on selling to universities but haven't found anything useful. I could really use advice or guidance on how to handle this process. This next week in addition to a more formal proposal, they will review the technical side of the software for compliance and security concerns. Social media is filling the void that social distancing has created. Social media marketing is an easy and effective way of maintaining that connection. Businesses are realizing the power and role of social media. How can you use Social Media during the Pandemic?
It is impossible to survive in a competitive market without having a strong social presence. But right now, shift your focus and finances from traditional marketing tactics. Invest your money where the audience is. Instead of TV ads, event marketing, etc. focus on social media marketing. Think of social media ads, videos, and podcasts.
Everything including the mindset of your target consumers is changing. Businesses should make sure that their message addresses the new approach. Be smart and swift, and update your digital marketing materials. This includes your marketing emails, social media posts, and comments. This also includes the way you interact with your clients on social media.
If you reacted promptly to the changing situations, you must have stepped back a little when the pandemic took the toll. That was the time when anything you posted looked opportunistic and could backfire. Now, we are past that. And, now we are meeting a very eager and engaged social media crowd. So, small businesses should focus on maintaining and enhancing engagement. The comment sections of your social media posts are the best place to connect with your clients.
The costs of social media marketing have dropped. Since small businesses got affected by the pandemic and stopped funding their campaigns. However, the drop is not going to last. Businesses are seeing the potential and revisiting their use of social media. If you act fast, you can use these dropped rates to boost your social media marketing tactics.
You must also rethink your social media content creation. Post content that strengthens the reliability of your brand. Now is the time to focus on forming a strong connection with your customers. Instead of advertising outrightly, post content that shows your customers you care. Share how you are ensuring the safety of your employees and customers. The steps you are taking to ensure that your customers continue receiving the services/products with minimum or no contact. Instead of marketing or promoting your products, this is the time to market your brand and business. So, when the pandemic is over, and the market is back on its feet, your company will have earned the trust and loyalty of your customers. Wrapping Up... During the pandemic, social media platforms are the best channels to connect with your target customers. Everything you have read about marketing now is the time to apply that. Posted: 16 May 2020 09:19 PM PDT Patents play a huge role in larger companies such as Apple or don't such as with SpaceX. Each company has their own approach to what to patent, when and how to do it. There isn't much about what kind of role patents play within startups. Should Aerospace/Defense startups aim to file patents early on or is it not as important as other aspects such as connections and building exposure? There are so many facets to a startup that it's hard to gauge where patents fall. Should patents even play a role? They seem to be purely as a legal defense? Posted: 16 May 2020 11:59 AM PDT I am new to this, but I had a pretty good idea and I was going to develop the software for it. After looking at patents, I found one that basically patents the entire technology that I would use for the product. Not to give it away, an analogy would be patenting the ability to perform facial recognition through technology, which is way too ambiguous... But somebody patented the underlying technology that I would use for my product. So in my example, I guess I couldn't use facial recognition since it's patented, even though my product would be developed differently and have other purposes. I didn't even know you can have a patent on something so general. Anyways, what do I need to do next? Obviously very early on and no investment yet. [link] [comments] |

How I increased our conversation rate out of discovery calls by making proposals that don’t suck. Posted: 16 May 2020 02:26 PM PDT Hi /r/startups! One of the biggest problems for me as the founder and first seller of a SaaS product was closing clients after I felt like I'd sold them on the discovery call. Finally, someone told me flat out that my proposals sucked. They were mostly contractual, sent via DocuSign, and lacked value based messaging! I was literally emailing people contracts! Anyway, he pointed me to something called [Better Proposals](BetterProposals.io). It lets me quickly make good-looking proposals that my client can feel good about signing and pitch to their boss without looking like a moron. And I can track when they open it and which sections they look at so I can be a data driven seller. Here's exactly how I use it. During the discovery call, I get them to try our product. It's quick and easy to use and get to the "Aha!" moment quickly. They go through the frequently asked questions and then ask for a proposal. Make sure you know when they want to start! If you don't, ask now. Then tell them "If we want to start by [start date], we need a proposal signed by [when you want them to sign]. Let's set a time to discuss the proposal on [one or two days before that] and I'll send it as soon as possible." The key here is you are locking them into the closing meeting before sending the proposal so if they want to back out they can't just ignore you. You're forcing them to read and respond with objections in a timely manner because of their own timeline. Anyway; I'm sure you will accuse me of shilling but this is a genuine review from a user and I'm not getting any compensation and don't have an affiliation or anything like that. Updating my sharetribe marketplace Posted: 16 May 2020 08:54 AM PDT Hey guys I have a tech startup question. I had a develop building my sharetribe marketplace based on their open source platform. He's now launched the basic marketplace without any landing page etc and then he disappeared. It's now been a few weeks and I see him online and active but for whatever reason he's non responsive to me. So at this point I am looking for a new dev to do the new coding. In the meanwhile I saw that sharetribe has a new april update which contains some of the features I wanted. As a non developer is there some way to do this update myself ? While I consider myself tech savvy I'm not a developer. I know my way around terminal and have used Linux command line but based on following instructions. Payment Service Provider that is cheaper than Stripe (for European Credit Cards)? Posted: 16 May 2020 02:37 AM PDT I have been looking for a while to replace Stripe as a payment service provider. They are quite cheap (1,4 % + 0,25 € for European cards). Most of my clients are form the EU, so that is what is relevant to me. One alternative is Paymill (1,35 %), but only with their Pro account. Other payment service providers in Europe are Payolution, Brainstree, Paypal, BS PAYONE, mPAY24. Though not cheaper. Who is beating the 1,4 % on EU card payments that Stripe is offering?
