Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

    Investor wants sandbox access.

    Posted: 09 May 2020 06:17 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've built some technology in the enterprise software space and I have taken it just short of where I can effectively bootstrap. A small number of beta users. I've invested 2 years of my life full time and my partner has worked on it part time for that period. The pitch went really well and the investors seemed "on the edge of their seat." This was my second meeting with them and it lasted 3 hours. At the end they asked me for sandbox access and I said yes but I haven't provided it yet, they also want to meet again in 2 weeks. I am concerned about providing sandbox access with no agreement in place, it opens the door to documenting every interaction in the system and replicating what I have built. Part of the reason I am seeking investment is my fear that a slow roll out opens the door to someone with lots of resources swooping in before I build momentum. I was hoping to get some advice. Should I provide access? If not how should I proceed?

    Thanks!

Equity exchanged for services: 6% to execute all design and branding (bad idea?)

    Posted: 09 May 2020 08:50 AM PDT

My agency has been approached by a start up to be their branding and design partner in exchange for equity. Their initial offer is 6%.

Some details: - They've built at least 2 successful startups in the past. - They are very well connected to potential investors - I like the idea but not in love with it. - Our agency is busy and not hurting for extra cash. - In a normal project we'd charge around 35K for these services. My hard costs are maybe 12k. - There is no "valuation" and no real business plan on paper yet, though they do seem to have thought through a lot of it. - I've considered countering with a discounted cash up front + equity model, but not sure what numbers would make sense. - The investor owns a dev shop so they will be responsible for building the product.

At the end of the day, I have been looking for these types of opportunities (to exchange a little up front cash for some potentially big backend returns), but I dont want to just take any ol deal, I want to be smart about it.

I'm not very unfamiliar with this type of thing and just want to make sure I'm considering all relevant factors. Thank you very the help.

    Cost for a patent? :(

    Posted: 10 May 2020 12:59 AM PDT

I went to a patent lawyer a few years ago who said my idea/concept might be patent-able but the cost was soooo much. JUST for a patent search was like $1,000! WTF?!

How do you go about getting a patent if you're a normal person? I know someone here will recommend a provisional patent but that doesn't really provide any protection, does it? It just ends up costing more in the long run because you are applying twice and only have one year?

Would it be worth it to dump $5k on a patent in hopes of eventually selling it or using it?

1)Or am I better off doing a basic patent search and getting a provisional patent? Then paying the extra money after finding out it can be patented?

2)At the end of the day my question is, how do you go about finding out if your idea is even patent-able without spending $5,000 for a patent search and application through a patent lawyer?

3)Can you patent a concept/process? Or does it have to be something tangible like source code?

    Education project

    Posted: 10 May 2020 12:02 AM PDT

So, teacher with previous Hi Tech experience here. I think I have an idea that might provide solutions to many problems in the education system. Especially relevant nowadays with lockdowns. But... If u have just an idea and not a product, and u need to join a company with resources to set up a complex AI based learning platform with smart user profiles, who would you turn to? Hate to turn to the Ministry of Education since knowing it can be exhausting due to all the bureaucracy.... And this platform can be used by all countries and not just mine (Israel) so financial opportunities may appeal to companies and less relevant to governments (who would become clients).

    Tips for Getting Investment

    Posted: 09 May 2020 10:54 AM PDT

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has got an investment for their start-up. If so, where did you go and what was the process like from preparing everything within your business to actually pitching to an investor? I'm currently in early stages such as working on my Business Plan, Preparing Financials, and Putting Together a Pitch. But, when the time comes to look for investors I want to be fully prepared. Any advice would be extremely helpful, thank you!

Developing a saas product to start a new business around. What things will help the company seem more “official?”

    Posted: 09 May 2020 06:28 PM PDT

I'm starting a new business based on a B2B saas product I'm developing. Looking for things that big companies have, that make them seem official and trustworthy.

    For example:

Nice website w/ good copy (obvious)

    Email templates

    Live chat (intercom, drift)

    Appointment setting links (calendly etc)

    Videos: how to/animated explainers

    Onboarding material- walkthru/docs/vids

    Social media

What else am I missing? I know there must be a ton

    I Appreciate all the help!

How do I solve the typical “chicken and egg” problem for my startup? I need content creators but in order to get them I need viewers.

    Posted: 09 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I'm hoping this thread could help me come up with some good ideas to get the ball rolling on my app. I have a streaming app similar to twitch where users can upload videos of themselves and viewers are able to tip them through those videos. My issue is in order to get viewers I need people streaming but in order to get people streaming I need viewers to send them tip money.

So far I've tried offering people $2 per video they upload but that didn't seem to work, anyone have any other suggestions?

Please help me to decide between Multi or Single tenancy for my SaaS

    Posted: 09 May 2020 05:54 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Could you please help me with understanding of what does it mean? I'm looking at some boilerplate SaaS startup software and they propose to choose one of the two? Which one should I choose? For example: is Gmail a multi or single tenant? I mean I definitely planning to have more than one user of my saas. Can it be achieved with multi tenancy or single tenancy?

    Best regards and thank you!

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 09 May 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

    React Native Course Recommendations

    Posted: 09 May 2020 05:29 AM PDT

    Hey all

    Hope you are well.

I am looking to learn to build a React Native app and was hoping someone could recommend a course that can help me do this as quickly as possible and is ideally free.

The app would be a to-do list of sorts and initially I just want to build it scratch my own itch, but would then maybe like to look at monetizing and commercialising it, so in first instance would be self contained but looking forward would like to deploy with backend on AWS.

    Finding money for advertising

    Posted: 09 May 2020 03:23 AM PDT

    Hi, I'm starting a new business, it's a subscription for $27/month.

I'm considering running paid ads, but if my math is correct, this would require quite a bit of upfront investment.

Let's say I advertise here on reddit at $5 CPM, and I get 0.5% CTR, and then a 1% conversion rate when people visit my website - this means it would cost me $100 to make a sale, which at $27 a month means 4 months just to break even.

It also means I'd need to spend $10,000 to get 100 users.

Am I missing something? I know this is one of the reasons why founders get investment, and I'm aware there are tactics to try and self-fund advertising (like offering discounts on annual subscriptions so you get most of the money now), I'm just wondering if there's another, more cost-effective way to use advertising.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dont Start your startup until you read this!

    Posted: 09 May 2020 06:54 AM PDT

    Hello All,

I'm in the process of validating an idea that i've had for a few months. I have almost 200 signups and done no marketing other than posting my landing page link in forums where my prospective users are. With that being said, so many of us are at a crossroads as to what to do next? Should we build it? Should we spend time and money and go all in? Well, I serendipitously came across this book called "The Right It" (https://www.amazon.com/Right-Many-Ideas-Yours-Succeed-ebook/dp/B07CKRYYZK/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+right+it&qid=1589031510&sr=8-1) and OMG is this book amazing! It gives you crucial tactics to determine if your idea is the right it before even building anything. If you're serious about starting a business, read this. I see so many people on here saying they're building this or that or wanting to start something but really we all should be asking ourselves are we building something people truly want?

Sorry to knock it to you, but if you don't validate with money or skin in the game from an actual customer first, then there's no point in going any further. Please please please read this book as it is a lifesaver in time and money with whatever you're pursuing. We have to stop kidding ourselves and thinking every idea we have is the "one". Hope this helps anyone out there who's building or looking to build something. Even with my signups, I still plan on validating somehow with real money being handed over.
