I employ independent contractors - one file for unemployment - how do I handle non-employee?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:51 PM PDT

I own a small S-corp that does IT work. One of my 1099 subcontractors (he is not incorporated but I send him a 1099 annually) filed for unemployment. My state (PA) sent me a form requesting information, and my S-corp is listed as the "Employer". I am not sure I should complete the form - I think he will be denied benefits as he is not my "employee". I believe he will need to apply through the CARES act provision for self-employed persons. Any advice on how I handle this with the state? I will try to help him in the meantime.

STIMULUS PLAN 2 (HEROES ACT) HAS JUST BEEN PASSED BY THE HOUSE

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:27 PM PDT

Heroes Act aka Stimulus Plan 2 has been passed by the house and is not headed towards the Senate which critiqued it extensively and noted that it would never pass.

That in turn means that the Senate will propose it's own bill next week, which will head back to House and only then to the president to be signed into law.

In an unlikely case Senate does vote and pass this Stimulus Plan (All Reps voted agains while all Dems voted for it), it will head towards President's desk to be signed into law some time closer towards the end of May.

NASA Licenses Technology to Startups for Free

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:32 PM PDT

    Here are the details:

    • This offer is open only to companies formed with the express intent of commercializing the licensed NASA technology.
    • NASA waives the initial licensing fees, and there are no minimum fees for the first three years.
    • Once the company starts selling a product, NASA will collect a standard net royalty fee. This money goes first to the inventor and then to maintaining the agency's technology transfer activities and technology advancement.
    • This announcement applies to only non-exclusive licenses, which means other companies may apply for similar rights to use the technology for commercial purposes. However, NASA will consider further exclusivity if the startup wishes to negotiate.
    • Companies entering into these licenses are bound by all requirements in federal licensing statutes and NASA policies, including development of a commercialization plan and reporting on efforts to achieve practical application.
    • While NASA does license to foreign entities, this start-up agreement is only available to companies in the United States.

Should I start an LLC? Or stay as an Independent Contractor

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:14 AM PDT

Hi, I've been an independent contractor for some time as a digital artist and producer. I've recently been offered a commission from an institution which totals into 5k in an artist fee and about 3k in a materials budget. I'm not necessarily in a space where I am doing this project for the money, but rather the step forward in my creative career so I'd like to invest this back into my next project. I've been subcontracting a few people to help me with some of the technical elements of the production and I am paying them small fees (about $400/each) out-of-pocket.

I am wondering if its time to start an LLC and if this will end up benefiting me down the road with taxes, loans, and projects.

I did some research and I know that the state of California charges an $800 LLC fee annually. Thats about 10% of the income I'll report with this project alone as an independent contractor so I'm wondering if this will balance out anyway.

Additionally, I would like to start hiring (sub-contracting) more people, reporting expenses, and selling products/ services and I'm just wondering if I should use this commission as the first project I handle directly through my LLC. It could be an interesting learning curve that might teach me something, and just wondering if you guys have any tips about this transition.

    Thank you!

Realistically how many months cash on hand should I stockpile for my business?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:11 PM PDT

If coronavirus has taught us anything, many of us are not prepared for a sudden stoppage in our business. How many months cash on hand is a good idea for my business in general?

I am a sole proprietor with no employees besides myself so I don't have a huge payroll to worry about. My payroll is the biggest chunk of my expenses.

Thanks for the help clarifying this.

1 Star yelper returns to order more food after 1 week.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Have you guys ever gotten a 1 Star review that stated "We won't be returning again." And "I would drive an extra 45+ minutes to get a better experience." And yet after just 1 week the yelper returns to order more food and even compliments the taste of my food? lol it makes me laugh how the yelper tries to hide her face behind a face mask and act all jolly and can't admit the food is actually good. So have you guys ever experienced this and what did you do to resolve it without embarrassing the yelper?

Best Business Structure for YouTuber -- S corp or LLC?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:25 PM PDT

What would be the best business structure for a small YouTuber who brings in around $30,000 a year in revenue? S corp or LLC? I'm located in California if it matters

If I create an S-corp, what would be a reasonable salary for a YouTuber, since they don't make much (if anything) on average?

Am I screwing my boss over?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:29 PM PDT

Legitimate question because I don't want to, I'm very thankful for him having me back on. It's a long story, but I'll make it short. Worked at this bar from 2011-2013, got a city job for 6 years, moved out of state and came back to the same area to finish my teaching stuff up. I started bartending once a week in January and filling in, like $200/night cash but reported for taxes.

Once COVID hit, he laid us off for a bit and I applied for unemployment thinking no way I'd get it. I applied and got approved and it had all my previous quarters at like $20000 because of the city job. He's opening back up soon and said he'll start reporting our wages to the state and he'll have to cover the rest, or something like that, but we'd still be eligible for the $600/week federal.

So does this mean if I work once a week, he'd have to cover the difference in unemployment from $481/week (unemployment before taxes) and whatever I make in a night? For example, I make $200 in a night, I'd report it and get essentially the $281 for the week in unemployment? Does this mean he'd have to cover it or does the city (previous employer) actually cover it?

I really don't want him to be out the money and I also want to maximize my benefits. If anything, he'd offer me a couple more shifts a week which I'd be more than happy to take.

Or, do I just not say a word?

If your accountant asked for honest feedback and you actually gave it to them, what would you say?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:01 AM PDT

I've been an employee (accountant) all my life and I'm keen to break out and start my own firm (Partnership in my current firm is probable but I want to build something myself and not be beholden to the other partners).

So could you please tell me good and bad stories of your accountant, times when they amazed and they won you as a client for life and times when you were let down and started googling other firms?

The two complaints I hear the most are fee and tax surprises, e.g. expecting the fee to be $x and being billed $y or having $x tax to pay and it comes in at $y but what other things to avoid are out there?

Any recommendations for unique promotional products or swag that people will actually use?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:22 PM PDT

Looking for some out-of-the-box ideas when it comes to giving away something with our company information on it. People don't seem to use pens all that much anymore. I feel like stress balls, bottle openers and can coozies probably end up in the trash.

I'm currently using car air fresheners (we are an auto industry business) and packs of gum (which people seem to love). They have both been great from what I can tell.

Curious if anyone has any other ideas that a customer would actually maybe use. Nothing too expensive like stainless steel mugs or thumb drives. But something you can get for around $1-$2 each and few companies are doing.

    Feedback for Copywriting Business Idea

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:33 PM PDT

Trying to get some feedback on validating my new business idea, can you help? I will not spam you, I promise. Just doing some research at the moment.

I am going to be starting a subscription based company that targets small businesses, and will provide copywriting for one flat fee every month. That fee will be around $999/mo. Also a 7-day money back guarantee.

Basically, you can think of my company as your in-house copywriter without actually hiring someone. Whatever you need to have written, we will get it done for you.

This will also include unlimited revisions for each request, just to ensure the client is happy with the final copy.

My question to you business owners is, would you use a service like this? How do you feel about the pricing, too high or too low?

Family business shut down by COVID - My brothers and I are developing an app so small businesses get recurring revenue from local supporters

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:12 PM PDT

Recent events convinced my brothers and I to work on easing the financial burden caused by the pandemic by developing an application that helps local businesses recieve a steady income. In our vision, local patrons can support a business with a monthly membership in exchange for discounts, free items, or other business offers. In turn, businesses can support local community organizations and be featured on the platform, creating an ecosystem that mutually benefits local economies and communities!

We would appreciate any feedback you can provide, or if you could take our survey:

    Help Finding an Inventory Software

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:46 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am hoping that someone can recommend me a good inventory software because my current system is a mess.

To begin, the business is my family farm. We have started offering at home deliveries due to the current situation. We have been growing (no pun intended) quite a bit with our customer base and our current system is driving me nuts.

Currently we are sending an email list to our customers. They respond with their order. I then enter in the order into a weekly Google sheet to keep track of who ordered what and how many of each product. Then I go to PayPal and make invoices, entering again what each person ordered. Then because my dad is old fashion and "paper can never be deleted", he writes it all down on a notepad. Then we go over the total each week to make up the orders for the week.

I am looking for a system that takes the redundancy out of it. The best would honestly be a system that could integrate with PayPal to keep track of the weekly quantities. But if there is something that works even better, I am all ears. However, our profit margin are kind of slim so I am not looking for a super expensive platform.

Moved business to online only - how to keep online presence?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:48 AM PDT

With everything going on with COVID we decided to ditch our brick and mortar and move to online only. We had already been receiving decent orders online so it was the best move for us.

Now that we have updated everything, I noticed today that I am no longer showing on Google maps, and when previously my company would dominate the results for certain searches I'm now noticing a significant decrease in my results and a lot more for my competition that have kept their stores.

How do make sure the move to online won't drown me out from my competition? Currently searches for my industry in my area show a few links for my store and my Google ad, but not much else.

    Any advice?

    Video/Menu advertising for your business

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:39 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I need help approaching local businesses with my idea and see if I should even pursue it as a business since I don't have a job. What would you as a business owner ask me if I approached your business?

I am a bar manager (I hope to still be after this is all over) and I am also a semi retired dj. I've put my passions to help promote new menu items and mixing music videos. So I make 3-4 hour non stop mixes using music videos and I incorporate new menu items or sale items or announcing special events. The owners are happy with it because they save money on a dj during "non busy hours". We still play my videos muted when djs are there so we can still get the club vibe plus it allows for maximum exposure of menu items we are trying to promote.

Small businesses are mostly operating on a tight cashflow and some businesses are not allowing customers inside, would my "video dj menu advertising" business idea still be somewhat attractive enough to sell? I was thinking of doing it as a subscription service to allow changes in new items, new promotions etc. But I am still having a hard time thinking of how to approach businesses about this idea. Any ideas and feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Exporting recyclable products or clothings

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:48 PM PDT

    I am thinking to start a business in USA as E2 visa holder and I have 2 idea for that;

First one is to export recyclable restaurant/bar materials (straws, glasses etc) from China or some other countries. (Mostly China)

I have some connections with restaurants and big hotels. Best part is most of the businesses don't use plastic straws anymore. So that would be profitable idea but there is corona virus now and most of the restaurants are still closed.

Second one is to export clothings from my textile mill.

Exporting clothes from my own textile factory has some pros obviously but I am not sure how to sell it properly other than online. Maybe I can sell it to the small stores too but I am not sure.

What do you guys think about these ideas? Which one is plausible?

If none of them is smart then why is that.

    Thank you.
