I can't get State Farm or my old insurance agent to send a letter of experience and caused my new insurance to to double my monthly payments.

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:38 AM PDT

Hi, thanks in advance for anyones time!

So about a month and a half ago my wife and I decided we were getting ripped off by state farm on her car insurance. After being with them for 6 years with full coverage at 200+ a month and asking our local agents office multiple times for adjustment on value of the car, etc to no success. (Coverage was on a 2012 Toyota Corolla). I might also add the coverage was for us living denver at the time.

Now this was not unexpected that they didn't want to do any adjustments. To be honest history wise we claimed 1 substantial accident the first year of having the insurance. It was originally 180 per month before that. Went up to 215 per month after. Ok, it is what it is but the car was in still great shape after the fix and still new to us. We paid the 215 per month rate for 6 strait years with no adjustment to lower it. Even after asking. (Getting a real human to answer in my local state farm agents office was literally impossible)

So about a month+ ago we dedicated that playing 60%+ of the value of the car every year is unreasonable even for the full coverage we had. We had at this point moved back to Kansas 4 months prior so it was time to change anyway lol.

At this point we decided to go with American family insurance at a decent rate. 115 per month with the same deductible for moderate coverage. Being happy with this we got it set up with a local agent we knew of from a friend. We were good they just said they needed a letter of experience from my old local state farm.

Cool so we call our state farm agent and on that rare occasion they actually answered the phone. Told them what we needed and who to send it to. Well I'm sure you can see where this is going lol. A month later we go to pay our American Family monthly payments to see it went from 115 to 230 a month!

Obviously confused we call out local AF agent and ask whats up. They inform us that without the letter of experience there is nothing they can do! So fun ok 4 days ago we once again ask our old SF agent to send them asap. Today comes no letter of experience.

Thats what brings me here. State farm proper won't send one they say. Only the agent we used in denver can. I find this unrealistic overall. I would also like to add American family agent has not tried them selves at all to contact State Farm. As well as not informing us till our payment was due in 4 days that they had doubled it. I feel thats just lazy on the part of America family.

Guess my question is. What do I do to get these people to actually try to do there jobs?

Don't feel like its my job personally seeing as i paid for a service and tried in good faith to get them sent over. Don't mind trying the first time but now I'm doing there jobs imo. Whats the point of a local agent if they can't at least try and saddle the work on the customer.

Also is it not really rude and kinda shady that American family insurance did not inform us till 4 days before the bill was due that it had doubled or even bother trying to call us or state farm about the letter of recommendation.

Sadly I assume my only options now are to get the General for a month or 2 and leave some bad reviews for both the American Family and State farm local offices till this is sorted out.

Once again thanks for anyones time and help. Sorry about the book as well. Just wanted all info out there. Plus if there is a page for reviews or to warn others about bad local agents would love to find that page lol.

Laid off from a 10-month position. Why does health insurance not carry on for the remainder of calendar year?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:02 PM PDT

I am a 10 month employee (public school teacher). I started a new position on September 19, 2019. I chose the health insurance plan I wanted. Our contribution rate is set. We only pay premiums for 10 months (20 paychecks/year), but obviously our health coverage is for a calendar year. The district had a reduction in force, and are laying off non-tenured teacher effective June 30, 2020. I have to get COBRA starting July 1st. My question is, why don't the premiums i have already paid cover July and August? If I had been granted a new contract for next year, I would continue to have health insurance coverage over the summer, even though I would not have a paycheck (and pay insurance premiums again) until September 1st. I am not arguing that my district is wrong, I just really don't understand how that math works out. I am in New Jersey. Thank you!

Never got a salvage title for my cosmetically totaled car, did I commit insurance fraud?? And can I still sell it?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:00 PM PDT

10 years ago, a dude backed into my old early-nineties sedan and "totaled" it. Honestly, the hood was just a little banged up, so I straightened it out by hand, accepted a check from his insurance for more than I paid for the car, and continued to drive it.

Now I'm ready to sell it, hopefully for a couple hundred bucks to a high schooler or college kid. (Runs great but it's oldAF with over 200k miles). I go to look at what I'm supposed to do and—salvage title? I never got a salvage title. What's more, I've carried normal liability insurance on the car...is that bad?

Do I need to do something to get the salvage title? I don't even remember who the guy's insurance was. And am I going to be in trouble for continuing to insure my car (just with liability) without disclosing it was totaled? (Actually I may have totally verbally disclosed this, I just don't have a salvaged title.)

I'm afraid to ask the DMV or any insurance in case I did something wrong that whole time. If I really screwed this up, I'd rather just junk the car. I can sell its snow tires for more than the car.

I do have the original title and live in Montana, for whatever that is worth.

How to prove we're not at fault?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:46 PM PDT

My sister and I (her driving, my car) were in a car wreck yesterday; she received a citation for it, but the report is absolutely wrong about what happened.

Sis and I were driving home, came to an intersection and stopped at the light. When the light turned green, she proceeded through the intersection. We were probably a little over halfway through the intersection when another car came into view from the right (crossing the intersection on the cross street). I screamed on impulse, my sister slammed the brakes, and the other car hit just the very front of my car, tearing off the bumper completely and the driver side headlight. As soon as the collision was over, I instinctively looked up at our traffic light -- sure enough, it was green. We pulled over to the curb, got out, and an onlooker (not sure if she saw the crash, or just heard it and came out of her house) called the cops.

The other car, after hitting us, flipped over onto the roof and then all the way back onto its wheels, stopping on the other side of the intersection facing the opposite direction that she had been driving. There are skid marks from her car AFTER she hit us but not before (which makes me think she didn't even see our car).

Officers came and one took my insurance and registration and sister's license, while another asked us what happened and had my sister fill out the police report. She wrote a quick description of the accident. Ambulances and fire trucks came for the other car (as far as the officers told us, the other driver/passengers were responsive and ambulatory, but the driver was taken to the hospital). I took pictures of the damage to my car and of the scene; we took care of paperwork with the officers. Dealt with all of this for probably an hour and a half before another officer (one we hadn't spoken to before) came to ask my sister what happened -- specifically how long we had been stopped at the light, when we saw the other vehicle. I started to answer one of his questions and was told that he ONLY wanted her to answer, so I zipped my lips. Officer told her that there was a witness who said that she (witness) was driving on the cross street going the opposite way from the other driver and had a green light, which would mean that we had a red light. It seems that if this were true, the witness would have hit us (or at least been in the intersection at the same time as us?) first, but regardless, we absolutely had a green light when we crossed that intersection. Now, my sister is worried about contesting the ticket and I am worried that because they cited her my insurance will consider my vehicle "at fault" -- it seems to be a case of she-said/she-said, and even though I absolutely KNOW we didn't run a red, it feels like the deck is stacked against us.

    Any help or advice?

No years no claims but no claims ever while driving..

    Posted: 12 May 2020 04:06 AM PDT

So basically I've been driving for around 4 years but never have I had no years no claims.. This is not because I'm a bad driver it's because the car I've been driving has broken down so have to scrap it. Our while I was in Canada for a half a year I never had a need to insure my car. I lost my job so couldn't afford to insure a car for a while so had to cancel it. And now I've been in germany for 5 months so no need for the car. So I've never managed to complete a year's insurance with anyone.. But Ive just brought a Honda civic year 2000 to save money on fuel and was hoping for cheeper insurance.. But I'm being charged the same as my Mazda rx8.. How is this even possible like its old smaller engine but I'm still getting charged out of my ass. Please can someone help me with some companies that take this into consideration.. If there are such things thanks

    (UK) Pandemic Clause?!

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:49 AM PDT

Before we begin, I hope you and your family are all safe at this time. I am also aware of the financial burden this situation has caused individuals & businesses therefore I appreciate many will be unwilling to compensate those who purchased goods/holidays as they look out for their own interests – which is absolutely fair and reasonable.

If you have a spare few minutes I would greatly appreciate your help/advise – is there any way I can get my money back for my ski holiday?

    Info:

Booked skiing holiday early February, trip take place 21st-28th March

1 no. group member pays provider on behalf of group (9 persons), which covers accommodation, airport transfers & food/drink for the holiday (receipt received for payment includes all of our individual names and states the individual price pp)

Flights are booked on individual basis

6th March I purchase travel insurance with snowsports cover

Pandemic declared by WHO 11th March

17th March FCO advise against travelling to the countries (France & Switzerland)

    Flights (EasyJet):

UK to Switzerland: Outbound flight 21st March is not cancelled

Switzerland to UK: Return flight 28th March is cancelled

EasyJet refuse refund for return flight citing EU261/2004 "extraordinary circumstances".

    Accommodation, Transfers & Food/Drink provider:

Ski company refuse refund or compensation for trip stating "I am sure you have travel insurance and this is what it is for", along with "we have already paid for accommodation, staff wages & resources"

    Insurance Provider:

Following the above attempts to resolve without insurance – I put the above together and claim, only to be refused due to "General Policy Exclusions – Epidemic Any epidemic or pandemic as declared by the WHO".

In short – is there any scope from the above to get my money back?

Flights & Accommodation - is there any way around this as I was following FCO advice?

Insurance - do I have a case due to purchasing insurance before the pandemic was declared? There is a clause in the policy stating that I will be covered if the FCO advise against all travel to the countries.

    Thanks again – stay safe.

Just got into an auto accident where the driver that hit me backed out of his driveway while I was going past and he hit my rear bumper. How do I handle talking to his insurance?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:28 PM PDT

Never had to do this type of thing before but I've heard claims adjusters will try to make you say you're responsible in someway and get you to confess that you were the reason of the crash. Is this true at all? The guy ha State Farm and just wanted to answer the phone will all the correct answers so I don't have to pay for anything.

Also the crash ended up damaging my tires sidewalk and rim. I'd there a possibility that I would be able to have them replace all four of my tires and the wheel on the damaged side?

AAA can't find apartment address for renters insurance

    Posted: 11 May 2020 12:44 PM PDT

I am trying to get renters insurance at a newly built (2019) apartment complex, but AAA can't find the address and therefore can't give me renters insurance. I called the apartment and they said another person has also had this problem and the only thing they told me I can do is find someone else to get renters insurance from. How do I get AAA to recognize the address of the apartment. I would like to use them for renters insurance so I can bundle it with my pre-existing auto insurance.

Help! Cosmetic damage is a total loss?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Hi! My name is Courtney and this is my first post. I'm 21 from Massachusetts and I recently got into a accident a few weeks ago that I was at fault for. I was parked along a hill and rolled into the next car in my manual. I had 5 points on my license before this. I got an appraisal done on my 2010 Honda Fit shortly after the accident and they said it was a "total loss" even though it's only cosmetic damage and has never had any mechanical issues. They then called me and said they were going to give me a salvage title for the car and that it needs to be picked up even though I am still driving it. I'm worried that after this quarantine I will not be able to get to work. What do I do! Am I screwed?!

Adjuster, inspecting home where homeowner was in contact with some covid19. Anyone else?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:22 AM PDT

A colleague (my boss) received a claim Sometime ago and was not able to inspect the home because the homeowner was in contact with someone who had covid 19. The homeowner who has supposedly now quarantined for 2 weeks, wants an inspection and my boss has now reassigned the claim to me because My workload is low. I know bosses pawning of their own work is basically their full time job, but this really aggravates me since the boss pulls shit like this all time. Not to mention same company laid me off a month ago for 4 weeks and then rehired me. I really would not have cared if this was any other claim but the circumstances of why it was transferred to me is such bs. It's not because I have a low workload it's because the boss doesn't want to deal with the possibility of being exposed to covid 19.

I have mask and gloves but I suppose a lot of my anger is out of anxiety of being exposed to the virus.

In addition, when I came back to work after being laid off I said I assume we will be working from home to my boss to which I was told no we're fine because our office is above a dermatologist which gets frequently cleaned???? We don't even have a fucking cleaning lady anymore. I know this is complete bs but I have no other option as I have bills to pay and getting a new job right now is extremely difficult. I know because I was just recently unemployed.

Are there any other field adjuster that have been in a similar situation when it comes to inspections with the current pandemic?

Request for reimbursement from insurance company from employer I haven't worked for in almost two years?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Today I received a bill for $3791 from a previous employers insurance Flexible Spending Health Care Account that I haven't used since 10/2018. I resigned from the IBEW in 10/2018 and I have the letter I sent to prove it. The letter I received today says:

"Request for Reimbursement Employer: IBEW Local #

It has come to our attention that a debit card transaction was paid in error from your Flexible Spending Health Care Account, resulting in an overpayment of $3,791.24. This overpayment is a result of: Coverage Termination

Your coverage terminated as of 2/29/2020. Charges after this date are not eligible. If the service was provided prior to coverage termination, please provide us with documentation otherwise this transaction is not eligible.

Below is the breakdown of the overpayment shown to date:

    Date: 3/1/20

    Amount: $3,791.24

    Provider: Premium"

    Etc...

I had a new employer and employer health coverage starting 11/2018, so I am puzzled as to why I'm receiving this. Scared, don't know what to do. I can't get ahold of anyone from the insurance company or previous employer til the morning.

I was able to log into a benefits account on my previous employers site: It says for 3/1/2020, Forfeiture, 9,227.80. Not sure.

Why does a newborn have to be added to health insurance within 30 days?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:26 AM PDT

Why does this "grace period" exist? Why is there this small window to add a newborn that if you miss you will automatically be assessed thousands of dollars, even if you have insurance but didn't add the newborn in time?

It's like "oh, you have insurance that can protect you from being charged out of pocket for the astronomical hospital fees, but because you didn't add the newborn within the magical 30 days, you are now on the hook for all of that. You're out of luck."

Why is the system set up this way?

    400% Home Deductible Increase?!

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:50 PM PDT

    Questioning overall legality of this.

Important note: we live in Hawaii (Oahu) and everything is expensive.

Filed a claim for a burst water heater that ruined drywall, trim, and good chunk of flooring in our downstairs. Our deductible was originally $1,000, and the estimated cost so far (minus repair estimate that we are still waiting for) is about $6,000. We are expecting the repair to be an additional $4,000. Mold remediation, solar water heater removal, etc.

Now I haven't gotten approval for the claim yet. And our houses value is about 700,000...again, Hawaii prices y'all.

But today I received an email indicating that our deductible would be increasing to $5,000 from here forward. Now I expected an increase in our premium, and hell even a percentage increase on the deductible. But an increase of 400%!? Why!?

Will of course be talking to our agent tomorrow to get more info but I was hoping someone here might offer some advice?

    Overhead and profit question

    Posted: 11 May 2020 03:31 PM PDT

My insurance paid me overhead and profit for my homeowners claim for hail damage. My roofer replaced the roof and subcontracted the replacement of my gutters and siding to another contractor. I am having the same subcontractor replace the undamaged portion of my siding so the colors match. I am paying him directly for that. He billed me $2.80 per sq ft for the install of the siding. My roofer who uses the same guy to install the other 700 sq ft of siding billed $4.15 per sq ft. When I asked him about the price disparage said the difference was his overhead for being the main contractor. I have no problem with it because the insurance is paying $4.15 per sq ft, however my question is should I still have to make a separate overhead and profit payment to him if he does that? He is also charging the max insurance allows for the gutters so I am assuming he is getting a cut from that as well. Thanks for the help!

    Nfip vs private flood insurance.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 03:23 PM PDT

    Hello,

So my flood insurance when I first bought my house in 2015 was $1100. Now it is $1900. I started to look at different options. I got some private flood quotes.

    1st. $1250 Lexington insurance. 2nd. $713 Lloyd's insurance.

A little about the property. 1977 house in flood some AE. 5 miles from ocean. Has no historical flood claims. 1.5 ft below bfe.

What am I missing here? Why would it be so cheap. All coverages are identical, coverage amount and deductibles. All 3 have significant different prices. Could/will they up me significantly in 2 years? Why would they offer such a low rate? If I leave nfip, will they take me back if that happened.

I just want to know all the risks before I sign up for private flood.

Insurance company can't identify sub-model of base Ford Ranger

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I bought an 06 Ranger a week ago to replace a 94 Ranger. The next day I notified my insurance about the change assuming it would be the easiest thing. Basically the same truck, base model XLs badged as XLTs. Air conditioning/v6 added the T to the XL.

A few days later they ask for the submodel designation, tell them again it's a XLT. They ask again, what's the submodel, could it be a Sport or STX? Their computer is suggesting this, it won't accept anything else.

Now they've been told three times through email. I call to talk to my agent, that conversation goes in a circle and they say they are just going to call it a Sport and be done with it. I refused to let them do it.

Both submodels are upgrades, one a "fancy" street truck, the other a 2wd offroader. Both I would expect to require a slightly higher premium but more importantly if they intentionally enter inaccurate information on the policy I imagine problems with a future claim.

Short version-Insurance company can't be bothered to get their data entry right, wants to write policy with false information.

    Is it fraud?

    Time for new insurance company?

    Maybe I'm overthinking it.

If you read all of that you get a gold star. Thanks

When is condo insurance used vs condo master policy?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:28 AM PDT

So my master condo policy is a " Single Entity Coverage" type with a 10,000 deductible. From what I understand this will cover all units to be rebuilt with all walls , appliances, floors etc. that the builder put in.

I am attempting to figure out what my primary dwelling coverage for condo insurance should be. I imagine to answer this question, it depends on the rules for when individual condo insurance is used in lieu of the master policy.

    1. If a tornado destroys the entire building, it's clear the master policy will rebuild my unit.

    2. On the other hand, let's say a fire originates in my unit and is contained to to my unit. Does the master policy pay to rebuild my unit, and then my insurance covers the 10k deductable plus any additional (minor improvements) I've made?

If this is the case, I wouldn't need much more than 20k for a 1 bedroom condo rental.

On the other hand if the entire claim needs to be paid by my personal insurance- I would need much more (I imagine closer to 70-100k).

    Thanks!

Scraped bumper in apartment parking lot

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:38 PM PDT

    I need some advice.

Someone in my apartment complex has scraped my back bumper while my car has been parked. No eye witness and I didn't physically see anyone scrape it but I have a pretty good idea who did it as the scrape matches with their front bumper and I can kind of see the red primer left from their car on my blue paint. The only problem is their car is dinged up from every corner and I don't have any visual eyewitnesses so I can't just go accuse them blindly. I got a quote from a local repair guy he said $350 to fix the scrape as new without going through insurance, my deductible is $100 for comprehensive should I just file with insurance as a hit and run to get it repaired from a collision shop? is that gonna raise my premium or should I just pay $350 to get it fixed on my own so my premium doesn't go up from this?

If I try to clean up the scrape myself using Megauirs Quik Scratch kit to see if its less noticeable and doesn't need professional repairs, would insurance have a problem with that if/when I file a claim after a failed attempt at cleaning it up?

    Thanks everyone!

If you're over 26 and in graduate school, are you just out of luck?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:47 PM PDT

So I am most likely going to law school. I'll start at 24, finish at 27. That's one year of not being on my parents' plan.

Does that mean I'm just out of luck and I'll have to sign up for my own plan that year?

The thing is that I actually have a pre-existing condition. I need to see both a doctor and get a prescription each month.

Would I have to just pay for my own private plan? Living in CA, I theoretically could apply for Medical, but let's be honest... the quality of care provided by Medical is lower than that of private insurance.

I'm thinking way ahead but it's probably better to start thinking sooner rather than later.

Condo master policy deductible and HO6

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:34 AM PDT

Hello, my condo association just increased the deductible on their master policy to $25k, if something happens to my unit I am held responsible for that $25k... And I can't seem to get a clear answer from my HO6 carrier (USAA) if they will pay for the deductible.

Some of the things I read on the internet say I need coverage under dwelling or an HO 17 34, USAA thinks I have 10k coverage under assessment (and they won't let me buy more)... I have no idea... I just don't want to get stuck with a 25k deductible... Anyone have any idea about this stuff? Time to go shopping?

Switching medical insurance outside of open enrollment

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:27 PM PDT

It's open enrollment for my husband's work. However, my job might have better benefits, especially considering my current pregnant state. But it is not open enrollment for my work until the end of the year. On top of that, I'm currently on Furlough due to the pandemic. I do know that my job still provides medical during this time for it's furloughed employees since it is temporary.

So my question is if we were to opt out of open enrollment with our current provider, would that be considered "loss of insurance" and allow us to sign up with mine as a life event. Also, does anyone know if you can set up insurance with temporarily laid off?

Edited to add: We are in California.

[California, US] Can someone explain how car insurance work, please? I have never felt so confused in my life

    Posted: 11 May 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Was on the phone with an insurance company's rep. I asked what I thought were basic questions but after 20 minutes of talking I ended feeling more confused than ever before. I live in California, USA.

    Ok, so here's the situation:

My dad bought a car several months ago. He registered the car to his name at the DMV. He got it registered with a license plate and everything. He bought a car insurance policy so that he can drive it and he got a good rate (He has been licensed for a long time and has not gotten into any accidents). This month, he decided that he won't be driving a lot anymore (he's becoming older and other reasons) so he basically wants to give me the car

I am 22 years old, have been licensed since 21. So I have a lot less experience driving and I was expecting a very high rate. I called the insurance company my dad uses and asks how I can get a low rate. They asked me questions and ended up with a quote for me was double that of my dad's current rate but still reasonable (much less expensive than when I called other companies)

Everything's been good until we talked about whose car it is and who can legally drive it. My understanding was that for me to legally drive the car, my dad would need to transfer the title of the car to me (as a gift to a family member) at the DMV. Then the car legally belongs to me and I can purchase this policy and start driving. The rep asked me to buy the policy immediately (like most agents do, since they earn commissions, I guess), saying that the DMV doesn't care because the car is mine not my dad's. But I thought the car is his? The agent then said whose the car belongs to depends on the person that drives it the most (which I got confused because I thought only one person can legally drive the car -- the one on the pink slip registered with the DMV). The agent said I needed to buy the policy (if I want to drive the car, which I do) because I need to "put insurance on the car." But I thought the car already has an insurance policy on it because my dad has an insurance policy connected to it and has been using the car for the past months. The agent then said according to their records, the car does not have a policy on it (not exact phrasing but something about they don't have the records for that, but I thought they should since this is the same insurance company my dad is using that I'm calling). At this point, I got more confused and asked them to clarify: so there's two types of insurance here we're talking about, one is for the person and one for the car? The agent said that's incorrect, there's only 1 insurance policy here. We spent the next 15 minutes trying to understand each other but at some point I got so confused and just said I'll call back later

My dad currently (legally) live with me (we both have the same address on our driver's license). In the future, I will move to a different town and will change my address. (if this matter)

My aim here is to get the car to be legally mine as soon as possible so I can start using it. From a non-legal/social perspective, what is basically happening is: there's a car, no one is really using it right now, I want to use it, so I want to do what I need to do to get it ready for me to use it. Why did this have to be complicated?

Can another person drive my vehicle without being on my policy?

So I want to go out dirt biking with a friend (lending him my bike and he has plenty of rider experience), but my mom (who is in insurance) refuses to let us go out as he is not on my insurance. Now I don't know much about insurance all I know is I have full coverage on all my bikes (accident, liability, theft, fire, etc.). Can he really not ride my bike and be covered without being on my policy?

Edit- forgot to add, if it matters I am front hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
