Can a car dealership use a VIN lookup to verify active insurance status?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:57 PM PDT

    Location: Georgia, US

Hi, sorry if this isn't the right place.

I am trading in my old car and purchasing a new one tomorrow. This is the only day for a few months that I will be able to make the two hour drive to the dealership and sit around through the process. I have auto insurance through Farm Bureau, which will not be open again until Tuesday (today is Friday.) I know that my policy is active because I just spoke to my agent a few days ago. However, I cannot find my "new" insurance card, I only have one that expired on 12/24/2019, but my vehicle registration, which was renewed in March, lists my insurance status as "active."

When I got rear-ended a few months ago, the officer who responded said he did not need any proof of insurance, because he was doing a VIN lookup and that would tell him if my car was insured or not.

If I show my vehicle registration, my expired but still accurate insurance card, and have them do a VIN lookup, is that enough proof of insurance? Thank you very much!

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Double Coverage?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:07 AM PDT

Looking at changing my car insurance to be the same as my girlfriend's. I'm currently at Geico. The agent with Allstate is saying I don't need Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury because I already have Health Insurance with a $2,250 deductible. I would be double-covered. Even if I do add this coverage, Allstate would save me ~$5 per month.

    Is this correct?

I'm in Austin, TX and I see terrible drivers everywhere. I know people don't keep up on their car registrations and print their own temporary paper plates all the time. I've drivers blow through red lights more than anywhere I've lived.

Generally, I want to be sure that I'm as protected as possible, but yeah, if I don't need it, I wouldn't want it.

    Thoughts?

    Question about SR-22 insurance situation.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:13 AM PDT

I found out I had an 8 y.o. ticket in Texas, so I decided to pay it off.

In doing so it triggered info being sent to the Texas DMV making it so I am required to carry SR-22. I do not live in Texas and Texas will not transfer SR-22 requirement to the state I am living in.

Can I switch my insurance provider to one that is licensed in both states so that I can maintain my insurance and report it to the non resident state (If they do that) ?

Or purchase some non owner insurance SR-22 from Texas and maintain my current out of state insurance?

Insurance quoted me $900 for a surgery, but final bill is $2770 even with insurance benefits

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:41 AM PDT

Posted this in r/personalfinance, but I will be posting here as well. Surgery took place in NYC.

I had a minor surgery in late January.

Doctor gave me three surgery codes, and told me to talk to my insurance about costs. When I called my insurance, they quoted me for $900~$1000 out of pocket for the three and that cost will vary by hospital and doctor. However after my surgery, I was billed a total of $11,406.93 and with insurance negotiation and insurance benefits, it lowered my costs to $2770 outstanding balance. This excludes money i have to pay to anesthesiologist and a separate $100 charge to the doctor for some reason...

When I called my insurance, they told me that there is nothing I can do to lower cost since it's already been negotiated on my behalf by the insurance.

Is this fraud? What can I do to lower my costs? This is with Mount Sinai, a large hospital in NYC... Any advice or insight will be very helpful. This has been an upsetting experience

Question About Calendar Year - Claims?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:47 PM PDT

    So I have this scenario:

I had a vision appointment first of Nov. 2019. I got glasses that same day, filed an insurance claim to reimburse me the maximum for the frames and lenses. Claim takes a while to process with them, I don't get the money until the end of January.

So my question is, because they didn't complete the claim until Jan 2020, did the claim count for the 2020 calendar year or did it count for 2019 as I filed the claim in November of that year? Simply put, at what point of the process do they timestamp it, and in this scenario would you say 2019 or 2020? I'm needing to know because I'd ideally like a backup pair of glasses, but I don't want to be charged too much for them.

Sorry, I've been adulting for a very short time, and I've read my insurance information up and down, but this seems like a niche question that wasn't in there...

    Edit: Texas, United States

Car accident might not have happened the way it was remembered

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:44 AM PDT

My fiancee was recently in a car accident. She believes someone hit her while she was still parked and the car was off.

The damage looks like she backed into a pole pretty hard and there is a pole at the scene.

I think that is what happened, the police thought that was what happened.

She still believed someone hit her.

In her words the last thing she remembers was she was about to start the car then she was hit.

the insurance company is investigating the accident because they don"t think she is telling the truth.

I think they might deny her claim because she gave a statement and allowed them access to the EDR.

I don"t believe she is lying but maybe had a concussion and is remembering things wrong.

If they do deny her claim is there something she can do?

She is covered for either accident and has no reason to lie

Excessive Pet Health Insurance Premium Increase

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:29 PM PDT

    Hello Redditors,

I'm going to share a quick story and share some of my immediate thoughts or ideas about my situation. I really don't know what the best thing to do is, so if you have any advice on top of giving your opinion on my ideas it will help out a lot.

My pet insurance company sent me a letter stating that they are doubling my premium. This is specifically for an american short hair (non-exotic) cat that just turned 11 and didn't have any major issues or frequent vet visits (my others did). The verbal reason they provided was a refresh they had to apply across all 50 states and all policies. Basically "everyone's policy is going up not just yours". I also asked if the pricing was consistent with the premiums they are giving for new policies... They said yes which led me to believe this is all a big lie. I'm pretty sure they won't be getting any new clients or renewals if they're charging double the market average. Supposedly the refresh was an unavoidable thing that accounted for most of my premium increases, and only part of the increase was due to age. I have a similar cat (same age as this one turned this year) who still has the un-doubled premium at the 11 year mark. Based on what they said and reviews more like 40% increases for cats his age are happening this year. Is this even legal to charge me more than they would for a new policy for an identical candidate? Is it legal in the U.S. (TX) to discriminate against their policy holders and charge one customer more than the other? I'm pretty sure if I apply for a cat of the same breed and age the price wont be double. Is it worth it to apply for a new policy and prove they are BSing me? Or take it to a lawyer and sue over? I'm being discriminated against and targeted for an excessive premium hike and being lied to. Are there any options besides ditching my insurance company and finding a new one... It seems like I'll just have to repeat the process and keep looking for new insurance companies whenever they try to pull one over on me.

Part of the complication is that new pet insurance policies generally don't cover for existing health issues. So if I start switching my older pets to new insurance companies they'll get less and less coverage any time they switch. It's beneficial to try to stick with one (any recommendations?)

Any advice for my situation? Thanks!

Buying a house...chances of homeowners insurance requiring us to replace an 18 year old roof within a few months of closing?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:11 PM PDT

As the title says, we're buying a house. The roof is 18 years old, no known leaks. Asphalt shingles. The inspection did reveal a shingle in the yard, although we recently had several days of severe weather in the two weeks before the inspection. The inspector did go into the attic area and did not see any leaks or internal signs of roof damage. The sellers are NOT willing to compromise whatsoever on anything to do with the price or replacing the roof themselves. We have still decided to move forward with the purchase.

We plan to replace the roof in 2 years or so. Technically we have the money in savings, however we'd really like to not deplete the whole thing given the current economic circumstances. We have talked with one of our insurance agents about the circumstances of the roof, though she cannot give any specific details until the insurance representative comes out to look over the house before closing.

There has been mention that insurance could require us to replace the roof within 60 days of closing. We also know that even if they do insure it, any claim on the roof in the first year would likely be denied and on us to cover. I am wondering what typically goes into this decision.

    • How do they decide to require the roof replacement? What more than age goes into the decision?
    • Would it impact their decision and give us more time, 1-2 years, to save if we removed any trees near the roof?

We were planning to remove 2-3 trees that hang over the house, especially prior to a roof replacement, but the costs for tree removal would be substantially less than a new roof out-of-pocket. I'd really rather not get into opinions on whether we should buy the house or if it's a good or bad decision; It's been a really rough route to this point and knowing our specific situation details, this is the decision that fits us. Any other technical insurance related information relevant to our situation would be very much appreciated.

Edited to add: I know that the responses here are only guesses and that no one can give me actual information without knowing or seeing the roof. I'm just looking for guidance on the situation and items to be aware of or to look out for. We're in the Southeastern US.

    Allstate sucks!!!! The rant

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:05 AM PDT

We ( my grandparents and I) had two tornadoes touch down in our town 2ish weeks ago. It took the a chunk of shingles off the roof and it damaged underneath. The were a couple trees and what not down as well. A licensed contractor looked at our roof and said it need to be replaced since it had a ton of pack jobs from previous storms. Allstate says otherwise offered a small amount to get it patched again. What's the point in having insurance if we can't use it. We literally been patching the roof since Matthew hit and the storms there after. We're dropping them and going with someone reliable. Our contractor is calling them to yell and tell the they are selfish for pulling this stunt against 2 seniors. Goodbye Allstate you just lost yet another customer

    Rant over

Should I file a claim if only I was involved in accident?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:59 PM PDT

I recently got into an accident that destroyed my motorcycle and injured myself with no damage to anyone or anything else. Unfortunately, I do not have collision or comprehensive as the price was too high for a $2500 motorcycle so I don't think I can get anything for it.However, I do have Optional Basic Economic Loss through Progressive. I can not work from the injuries I've sustained and was interested in getting the lost earnings. The questions that I have are the following: Will my insurance rate go up in any way if I don't file a claim? A police officer came to the scene so I'm not sure if insurance already knows about the accident. If I don't file, am I allowed to answer "no accidents in past 3 years" on a new insurance application? If I do file a claim, what kind of documents do I need to support my claim for income loss? I am in New York, USA

State Farm says Additional Insured instead of Additional Interest / Interested party on Renters Insurance?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 02:37 PM PDT

I have my renters insurance through state farm. My apartment complex is mentioned as Additional Insured on the policy. However, my apartment complex want them to be listed as Additional Interest / Interested party. When I contacted State Farm they said both are same and won't change it. My apartment complex on other hand is not willing to accept that. Further, my apartment complex mentioned some of their other tenants were able to change it with State Farm. Did anyone have same experience? and what they did?

This is in State of Texas.

    Thanks!

    What is considered “reasonable” here?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:09 PM PDT

Hello! I'm hoping someone can help me! I was in a car accident in October 2019, the guy totaled my car and I was out of work for a little. From the accident I have/had: concussion/post concussion syndrome (+worsening of migraines that already existed), whip lash, neck and back pain, pelvic pain, and driving anxiety. I am not using a lawyer for any claims, and this is what they've offered so far: 6,100 for medical (that covers all the bills), 1,000 for lost wages (accurate to what I lost but not covering PTO that I did not accrue while not working), 4,500 for the car and no salvage title (car in in working condition and passed inspection, is just uglier now), and they offered 4,000 for pain and suffering. I said I was willing to accept everything except for the pain and suffering compensation as I felt, due to the longevity of the incident (head injuries, anxiety, and my neck and back are still killing me even after 3 months of chiropractic care) I was not being compensated correctly. They asked me what I think is reasonable. So what is reasonable? I'm not trying to take them for a ride, not trying to make millions, just trying to cover my ass for future medical expenses due to all of this, as I know there will be future expenses. Any guiding numbers to suggest? Thank you so much.

Edit: I'm in Maryland I don't know if this helps?

    CALIFORNIA TOTAL LOSS CLAIM

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:54 AM PDT

    O.M.G.

    Background:

Policyholder/Trustee/Sole Benefactor of Trust/homeowner but does not reside on property (eldest son)

    Trustor/now deceased(the mother&widow)/resident of property

Youngest Son residing on property with girlfriend Youngest Daughter residing on property with boyfriend Neither are named on trust: dont know why.

The home burned down from a litium ion battery that sparked and exploded. The mother did not make it. She actually turned around and walked back into the fire. She was unidentifiable and dental records were used to confirm id. Youngest daughter barely made it out after trying to get her mom to come along.

Sad situation. Very traumatic... All belongings perished , house is total loss. Dont have info on policy, withholding info
Currently using the AMR(correct this please, insurance is paying for rental)

My question is: Whats covered? Repairs; rebuilding on differsnt property, purchasing new home? I need clarification on this section.

Whos covered? If the son is polict holder but doesnt reside on property how does this affect us who lived there ? Are our belongings covered? The adjustor csme put and have us an inventory

Thing is the youngest son is a master craftsman had at very least 100k of equipment, tools etc for work. But withour thosr hes unable to work.

How much can we claim What should we avoid claiming

Whats the easiest way to do inventory on thousands of tools materials items??

    Thanks!
