Beware the 0% promotions: a warning. Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:16 AM PDT I'm a sucker. I fell for it. The 0% APR promotion on an item I could have paid outright for. 18 months later, here I sit, not a single late payment on my account, yet I have $1k in interest to pay for 18 months of 27%. Why? The promotion period ends 18 months after the purchase, but the website would not let me set up autopay until a week after I purchased, so autopay ended 1 week late. I thought I was golden, ready to have this paid off and not have a single fee. I got comfortable and didn't read the statements. 0% is not really 0%. Read the fine print. Remember the fine print (because I sure as hell didn't 18 months later). Shitty banks rely on this stuff. They wait for you to slip, not noticing that the autopay they created can't possibly allow you to end on time, and will require an extra payment before the end date to avoid the interest. It's shitty, I'm pissed off, and I've learned my lesson. [link] [comments] |
Health Insurance is only paying 1/4 of pre-approved Surgery... Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:36 AM PDT Had this surgery that was pre-approved completed. After the surgery was done, insurance denied paying for it because of it "The request for authorization we needed from your health care provider to make a decisions wasn't sent within the required time frame" The hospital tried to submit them documentation, but for whatever reason, months go by and they never re-submit the documents even with me calling me and asking. I get a denial letter from the insurance company, which ultimately has me filing a complaint with the Department of Commerce & Insurance with Tennessee. After investigation the legal department of the insurance company replies and states the denial is due to the surgery "falling outside of the authorized date range," yet they are willing to pay $45K. I would have never gotten this surgery if it wasn't pre-approved, and having to be on the hook for 150K. What options do I have due to what seems like an administrator error? [link] [comments] |
Turned in my 2 week notice and employer essentially asked me to name my price Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:57 PM PDT Throwaway account here just looking for any advice. I have been offered a job at a company (Employer A) with a salary in the middle 100K range and also some pretty impressive benefits (completely pay for healthcare premiums and HRA usually funds any deductibles incurred, 8%-10% towards retirement every year, and usually an annual bonus that I heard can be anywhere from 5K - 10K, roughly) I put in my 2 week notice and my current employer (Employer B) pulled me aside and basically told me that I had a ton of bargaining power and could essentially name my price. They don't have as impressive of benefits (healthcare family plan costs roughly $450 - $630 monthly depending on what level plan you choose, 6% towards retirement, and, in my experience, no annual bonus. In my 3 years at the company I have received one bonus of 10%) Culturally, I have no issues working for either company. They both have opportunities to place me at locations within 20 miles from my house which is 30 - 60 minutes depending on traffic. They both offer comparable amounts of PTO. I mainly chose to leave my job because I was denied a promotion last fall, but there was a reorg this winter and I was placed on a new team which apparently seems to value me a lot more. I came back to Employer B and told them that based on the comparison of total compensation I'd reconsider if they doubled my salary which would place me in the upper 100K range. I would personally be surprised if they agreed to that, but it's now been almost 24 hours since I gave them my demands and I still haven't heard their decision. I would have expected it to come sooner if it was out of their range. But I'm basically just wondering if there is anything I'm missing or not considering here. The health/retirement benefits and regular bonus at Employer A are quite nice which is why I asked for a greater salary at Employer B to cover the loss in total compensation. The difference between Employer A offer and my demand to Employer B is ~30K. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:18 PM PDT Sorry if this isn't the best place for this but I was wondering what anyone had to say. I know Costco has Kirkland signature product and usually store brand is cheaper, I don't think sams here has store brand food. Does anyone have any advice to which is cheaper? Thanks for any advice! Paying reduced rent while moving out temporarily (2-3 months). Good deal? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:24 AM PDT I'm in my mid 20s in NY and currently have the option to move back to my parents house for the remainder of the quarantine while paying 1/3 of the rent at my current place. I rent to be closer to my job but because of the pandemic, I've been working remotely and would be doing so for the foreseeable future. I'm financially stable and this is more of a lifestyle choice rather than a financial one. But I still would like some opinions as to whether or not 1/3 of the rent is reasonable. In my mind, this payment would essentially be for holding the spot and storage of my stuff. Thanks for reading and any feedback. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:24 PM PDT My wife and I bought our house a little over five years ago in a sellers market. We paid a far asking price for the home and set it up with a 15 year mortgage, since I know we aren't the most disciplined savers. At the time, I don't know that we had expectations about how long we would live in the home, just that we did not want to be renting any longer. I will also add that we were both in love with the house and have been very happy in it so far. We were the first of our friends group to own a home and as some of our other friends bought homes, my wife began to talk about wanting a new house and being able to pick out how everything looks. Here's the issue: if we were to build a new house now with the same square footage, we are looking at paying somewhere in the range of 80% more than what we initially paid for our house. It just doesn't make sense to me financially to trade our house (which is only 10 years old) for a brand new one at almost twice the cost. Plus, I can see that our friends who are buying houses now are getting smaller houses on 30 year mortgages and are paying basically the same amount that we are paying on our 15 year mortgage. So I guess my question is has anyone else experienced this in the recent housing market, where you basically already have such a good deal on a house that you can't bear to move to a new one? Did you stay and make upgrades to your current home to make up for this? [link] [comments] |
I have $15,000 and $4,200 in debt. Do I pay it all off in one shot? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:44 AM PDT I am 25. I make roughly $3,000 a month from both jobs not including any side gigs I have on the side. I pay roughly $900 in bills a month. With the pandemic I am making $2,100 a month. As of right now I have saved up $15,000, the most I've ever saved in my life. It's not a big deal but it is to me. I have a credit card with $4,200 on it. Do I throw $4,200 on it right now and pay it off or do I pay it off in payments? I don't use this card anymore but the payments have not been out of the $4,000 range in quite a while due to minimum payments and monthly interest. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Purchasing a parcel of land and having a house built? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:37 AM PDT Has anyone here done this before? I'm looking to move out of state within the next year. I have been looking around online at the real estate, but nothing really stands out to me in the areas that I'm looking at. So I have been toying with the idea of purchasing land and having a house built (maybe a modular home). I have just started researching this so any advice/tips from anyone who has done this before would be greatly appreciated. What are the basics I need to know and what are the hidden things I need to know. I know that this could be much easier in theory. Land is averaged at $20k per acre where I am looking. A lot of the parcels that I have looked at are septic ready or nat gas lines ran, underground conduit ready, well ready. I'm just looking to see what the best route would be for this. Approx. $4000 to repair 2013 car we still owe $6700 on Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT Hello. My husband owns a 2013 GMC Terrain with 112,000 miles on it. He was having serious issues and we took it to the dealership he bought it at almost 4 years ago and to make the car drivable is roughly $2000 and there is various codes to it may need a new Cadillac converter? and be another $2000 to pass inspection which is due by May 31st. Also, the service guy told me a part may not be available so that means it could take anywhere from 1 week to 1 year to get it in. We still owe $6700 on this vehicle. My dad just fixed my old Volvo I transferred back to him and would just charge us the amount he put into fix it (approx $300). The dealership will give us $2500 to trade it in. Not sure the price if we decide not to buy something new. Does it make sense to just trade the car in, but my old Volvo back for now and pay the rest off or get it fixed? We really have no intention of trading the car in for a new car at that place. [link] [comments] |
New to doing taxes and in mailing them out Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:18 PM PDT I'm new to doing my taxes. I tried filing them online but was unable to do so because I did not have my AGI from last year, so I have opted to mail them. Is there anything that I need to send with it? And would anyone know about how long it will take for them to send me my return? [link] [comments] |
Should I save my bonus income or use it to pay off debts quicker? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:49 PM PDT Hello all. Last July I started a new job that I really do love, and am in the best place I've ever been in financially. I take home about $4,000 a month after taxes, 401k, and health insurance, just in my base salary. Then each month I take home between 1700 and 3000 in bonus pay, depending on the previous month's business performance. With this income, I've been able to get my own place after being briefly homeless/couch surfing after I left my ex. I'm in a place now where I love my home, I have all the basics I need, plus extras, and I live quite comfortably. I'm ready to get structured with my budget and get rid of my four debts. I have about 5000 in savings. 19000 in student loan debt (222.39 monthly minimum payment) 15000 remaining car loan (bought in September 2019, 72 month loan, 249 payment monthly) 1400 credit card debt 500 remaining from a hospital stay last year (171 monthly payment) I'm planning to use the snowball method to get all this paid off, and only budget using my base pay. The bonus pay I was planning to just keep stashing away for an emergency fund, but I'm not sure if it would be best to just funnel that money into getting debt free? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:48 PM PDT Without getting into too much detail, two of the housemates are a couple and they occasionally get into arguments that escalate further than it should (screaming at top of lungs / objects being broken, but never getting to the point of where I felt the need to call the police. I've lived with them for some time now and the only reason I've stayed is because the rent is extremely cheap for the area. It seems like the arguments are getting more constant because we are all working from home. And unfortunately, my name has been brought up in several fights. This is taking a toll on me mentally as I'm now anxious whenever they are home and I feel unwanted. Would it be a bad idea to move out in these current conditions (COVID)? I have looked around and rent for a studio easily costs a whole paycheck. I currently pay for half of that. [link] [comments] |
Transferring $25k to girlfriend Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:40 PM PDT Hi all. My girlfriend (29F) and I (29M) rented a house from my mother when she moved out of it to buy a new house. My mom agreed to give me half of the cash that she made when we moved out and the house sold. I told my girlfriend I would give her half of my share because she was paying half the rent. 4 years later we sell the house and my mom and I split $100k. Our bank accounts were still linked so the transfer of my $50k was easy, but now I want to give the $25k to my girlfriend. I can do multiple transfers to her savings account over the span of the next 5 months, but I was wondering if there was a better way of getting her the money or if I'd run into any type of tax implications doing it that way. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this! [link] [comments] |
About to graduate and lose income. Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:39 PM PDT I graduate with a Masters on May 16th. This coincides with my last paycheck and final day of work for my assistantship position. I have had interviews but all hiring has been frozen. Can I qualify for unemployment since I have lost my position? I'm curious because it is sometimes referred to as a stipend but is taxed as income. It is approximately $1900/month. I think I will be able to find a job by August but it would be nice to receive assistance in the meantime. [link] [comments] |
Wells Fargo Monthly Service Fees Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:17 AM PDT Hi PF, I know we all hate the big names, but I do have a couple Wells Fargo accounts; Checking & Savings. There are a few parameters to follow to avoid a $12 Monthly Service Fee: Checking - Savings - Now, I never considered having to worry about this, but since Covid-19 started, I've used my debit card a total o 6 times this last month, I don't keep much in my checking, and my work does not offer direct deposit. I ended up calling and asking if they could reverse it, and they did without a hassle. I asked why they couldn't just waive the fee during the pandemic, and they said something about having to re-do the entire system for that, but they'll waive it for anyone that calls. So yeah, make sure you keep checking your accounts to make sure this BS doesn't hit you. WF sucks... [link] [comments] |
Brother Participated in a Money Scam Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:11 PM PDT My brother ended up listening to his friends about some kind of process where you can "duplicate" your money using cashapp then pulling money through cash back and atms. Because his account is tied to my moms she got the notification of the fraudulent activity a week later and is distressed considering all the money involved has to be paid back and the bank says she has to pay it. Currently he told me his friend (the one who was telling him what to do) is going to fix the problem so he is supposedly doing that. I questioned this friends loyalty and my brother said they became extremely close over the time they knew each other and claimed that the friend wouldn't do him like this. My mom is going to file a police report tomorrow saying she hopes my brother is not involved and my brother doesn't want to rat this good friend out especially if he is going to try and fix the situation. As his brother what can I do? I know he knows he messed up and he feels like an idiot and wants this to be fixed. I feel like the only options are somehow hope the friend returns the money and reverse the process somehow, or pay up the money by scrapping it together (we aren't very wealthy either). The second option will probably really hurt my mom financially and she in no way deserves that. Also please don't cast quick judgment on my brother, he is a kind and funny guy, he is just a dumbass. Edit: tldr: Brother participated in money scam via directions from "a very close friend" and now potentially our mom and he is suffering from it, how can I help the situation? Should I let her continue with the police report? [link] [comments] |

“Your Tax Refund has been applied to a past due obligation” Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:05 AM PDT I've been waiting for my taxes to finally hit after all this time, I got my stimulus and after trying to check my status to no avail (It would constantly give me an error in the prior weeks) it said they've been applied to a past due tax obligation. How? I have none, all of my bills and loans are up to date, I've never been on unemployment, and I can't call the IRS because they closed due to the coronavirus What can I do? [link] [comments] |
Living on my own for the first time Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:43 PM PDT I was kicked out of my parents house last night. My only source of income is unemployment. My dad took my car and my phone. All I have is $3,000. I have moved in with my boyfriend but I don't know how to save efficiently for a car and a phone while paying for some of the rent/grocery costs. I don't know when I will return to work... What do I do? [link] [comments] |
Advice for making money at home Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:31 PM PDT I am sure most people are, but I am pretty stressed for money right now especially being on lockdown. Most of my money is in an IRA/401k and I don't want to pull any money out if I don't need too. As I am currently laid off, I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for online work/ side hustles I can do. I have currently been downloading apps like fulldive and swagbucks for side money, but was looking for any recommendations. I have a some skill with coding and python/r, and experience with video editing. Any help would be great!! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
IRS WRONGLY sent us to collections Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:16 PM PDT Hey everyone, I received a couple of CP40s stating that our S-Corp didn't file taxes for a few years. They want a hefty penalty, something like $10k. However, we have had a CPA file the returns every year. I contacted the private debt collection agency and had the account transferred back to the IRS. Next, our current CPA mailed a letter to the IRS. In the letter, he explained that our records show that we filed every year. He included copies of the returns to corroborate this claim. Furthermore, he indicated that the shareholders' personal tax returns were filed in a timely manner every year, and showed the passthrough income from the Corp. He also included the invoices for tax preparation during the years in question. Finally, he requested full abatement for the penalties and interest. We're stuck in limbo now, haven't heard anything. Any other advice? This is almost 7 years later, so it's pretty ridiculous. I want to make sure ALL past taxes are squared away! [link] [comments] |
